Thank you to everyone who attended their performance appraisals. It was great to meet many of you and put faces to names Your feedback is appreciated and helps us grow as a team. We’re pleased to share that we successfully passed our recent audit, with strong recognition of improvements across all areas A big thank you to our Service Coordinators for their ongoing commitment and leadership.
A few important reminders to keep our standards high and our days running smoothly:
Please do your best to avoid calling in sick last minute, unless absolutely necessary. Lastminute call-outs place significant strain on the rest of the team and our participants. Ensure all BOCs and BOHs are documented and reported no matter how minor they may seem
Maintain professional boundaries with all participants Be warm and supportive, but remember your role.
All shift notes must be goal-focused, accurate, and submitted on time.
We’ve seen a concerning spike in serious crime across both Toowoomba and Rockhampton in the past month, particularly involving property theft, vehicle interference, and youth-related incidents
Please stay vigilant:
Lock all vehicles immediately after use this includes when parked at a property or at the office. Return all keys to their correct location without delay
Do not loiter after your shift leave promptly to ensure your own safety.
Treat all company belongings (vehicles, devices, documents) with care and ensure they are always stored securely.
Each month the office staff from Toowoomba and Rockhampton pick two standout employees from each location for their incredible contributions to the team and stand-out behaviours and dedication
Staff Shout Out – Kaleb Cooper
We’d like to recognise Kaleb for the fantastic work he’s been doing lately! His dedication and consistent effort have led to some amazing progress with Matthew, and it’s been so great to watch that connection grow. Your positive attitude and commitment do not go unnoticed – keep up the great work, Kaleb!
Staff Shout Out – Marcus Osborne
Big shout out to Marcus for always being so reliable and stepping up to cover shifts when needed Your dependability and team spirit make a huge difference, and we really appreciate you!
Staff Shout Out – Chris Sheehan
A huge thank you to Chris Sheehan for always putting his hand up for shifts and consistently keeping great communication with the office team Your reliability and proactive attitude doesn’t go unnoticed – we appreciate you!
Staff Shout Out – Baylee Meilland
Massive appreciation to Baylee, who consistently shows up to every shift with full commitment and heart He always puts participants first and his reliability is absolutely next level
A perfect example – he was literally driving home from a holiday and, when no one else could cover a sleepover, he said:
"I’ll be in Rocky at 6 – I’ll be there by 7pm "
Baylee, you’re an absolute legend Thank you for everything you do!
As most of you may be aware, Abby has moved on to new adventures
While we are sad to see her go, we wish her all the very best in her future endeavours. We’ll be welcoming a new Service Coordinator to the team soon, but in the meantime, it will just be myself (Lauren) working from the Rockhampton office, with support from our colleagues in the Toowoomba office. Thank you all for your continued support and patience during this transition!
As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care and support, it is essential that all staff consistently QR code participant behaviours both new and ongoing on the same day as your shift. Not all participants have QR codes. Please speak to the office if you have concerns about participants’ behaviours
✅ Evidence for Support Needs: Accurately recorded behaviours help build the evidence base needed to demonstrate the level and type of support participants require. This directly influences the funding and resources available to continue providing these vital supports
✅ Informed Planning & Reporting: Just like shift notes and incident reports, behaviour entries are key records that ensure consistency across care plans, team communication, and participant progress.
✅ Capturing Change: If a participant exhibits a new behaviour or a significant shift in existing behaviours, it must be reported This allows our team to respond promptly and adjust strategies where needed.
Please remember: Timely, detailed, and accurate QR coding is not just paperwork it’s part of quality care. Let’s continue working together to provide the best support possible by making every behaviour entry count

This month, we’re proud to share the ongoing improvements across our SIL homes, especially when it comes to cleanliness and the standard of care provided to our participants. It’s been wonderful to see the homes feeling tidier, more welcoming, and aligned with the high level of support we strive for every day
These improvements wouldn’t be possible without the effort and heart our team continues to show. Your commitment to maintaining quality environments and putting participants first doesn’t go unnoticed, so thank you Your work matters
If you do notice something that needs fixing or presents a safety concern, please continue to submit an incident report as soon as possible This helps us respond quickly and keep our homes safe and supportive for everyone
As June wraps up, we want to thank each of you for the commitment, care, and consistency you bring every day Your work makes a real difference in the lives of our participants and is truly appreciated. We also value the time many of you took for your performance appraisals Your honesty and feedback help us grow both individually and as a service.
As we head into July, please keep these key points in mind on shift:
Stay goal-focused – always link support back to participants' goals.
Document all BOCs and BOHs – even low-level behaviours must be reported
Keep shift notes clear and up to date – they’re vital for team communication and participant progress
This NAIDOC Week, we proudly recognise and celebrate the rich culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We respectfully acknowledge the Jagera, Giabal and Jarowair peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and support participants in Toowoomba, and the Darumbal people in the Rockhampton region
This year’s NAIDOC theme invites us to reflect, connect, and walk together in unity. Whether it’s through storytelling, art, community events or a shared yarn, we encourage everyone to engage in learning and celebrating the world’s oldest continuing culture
With our Centre Coordinator Logan off on an exciting trip to Japan this month, our team held strong and kept the energy high! We stayed focused on client goals, explored the community, and made sure each day was full of connection, purpose, and fun.
One of our favourite quiet outings this month was a relaxed visit to the Rockhampton Library Clients enjoyed browsing books, exploring the space, and soaking in a calm, creative environment. It was the perfect way to slow down, build confidence in a public setting, and enjoy some mindful time together
There was no shortage of laughter and friendly competition when we headed out to the bowling alley! Clients showed off their skills, encouraged one another, and had a blast knocking down pins. For many, it was also a great opportunity to work on social interaction and physical coordination – all while having a great time
Back at the centre, we took a more laid-back approach with our own “professional commentary” session Everyone kicked back to watch a live football match, offering running commentary like true sports presenters! It was a great way to enjoy some downtime, practise communication skills, and bond over shared interests
June has been a fantastic month full of learning, laughter, and growth We’re proud of how everyone stepped up while Logan was away, and we can’t wait to welcome him back from Japan with lots of stories to tell!
With some exciting July events just around the corner – including winter-themed activities, NAIDOC Week, and more community adventures – the fun is far from over. Stay tuned for another great month at Day Service!
With school holidays just around the corner, please note a few changes to our regular schedule: No Thursday bowling during the holidays due to the loud and busy atmosphere at the venue Instead, we’ll be planning some relaxed lunch outings so everyone can still enjoy fun social time in a calmer setting. Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting surprises, activities, and themed days coming up at Toowoomba Day Service – we’ve got plenty more fun in store!
Grumpy’s was a hit with its retro vibe, friendly staff, and delicious food Burgers, milkshakes, and fun chats sealed the deal clients already want to go back! I think this could be a new FAN FAVE!
Clients enjoyed chatting with a local officer over free coffee and donuts It was a great chance to ask questions, share laughs, and build trust in a relaxed setting.
A colourful trip to the local lolly shop brought back happy memories! Clients picked out favourite treats, shared laughs, and left with big smiles and sweet bags.
Wrapping Up June – Welcoming July with Excitement!
June was packed with joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments! Two standout highlights were our heartwarming visit to the RSPCA, where cuddles and puppy love lifted everyone’s spirits, and a super surprise visit from Batman and a T-Rex, which brought huge smiles and plenty of heroic poses!
These moments remind us of the power of connection, fun, and shared experiences and we’re taking that energy straight into July! With NAIDOC Week, winter-themed outings, and even a few cosy indoor surprises planned, July is already shaping up to be full of excitement and community spirit Stay tuned there’s so much more to come!
Come join Jess and the rest of the team for all the exciting adventures happening at the Toowoomba Day Service. We can’t wait to see you there!
Everyone communicates and connects differently. Keep interactions purposeful and centred on the participant’s needs Ask, Don’t Guess
Clarify preferences, triggers, and support needs early (with the team if needed).
When is it appropriate to ask to cease working with a client? Here at BigDog, it’s important to balance your professional responsibilities with your well-being and capacity, to meet the goal of providing the best possible support However, we recognise that at times, the dynamic between a support worker and participant may not be the right fit.
While there are times when requesting not to work with a participant is appropriate, there are also situations where other strategies or adjustments are more effective
Below are a few examples of situations where it may be more appropriate to continue support with the participant, potentially with additional guidance or adjustments in approach:
Temporary Difficulties (e.g. mental health episodes, family crisis, medication changes): These often pass
Speak to a Service Coordinator to adjust your approach or request support/training
Communication Barriers (e g non-verbal, neurodivergence): Misunderstandings aren’t grounds to cease support Try alternative methods or consult with a therapist if involved.
Disability-Related Behaviours (e g stimming, echolalia): These are part of some disabilities, not behavioural issues. Learn, adapt, and ask for training if unsure
Personality Clashes: Not clicking with a client isn’t a reason to stop support if they’re benefiting Stay professional and goal-focused
Low Motivation or Resistance: Lack of engagement can improve with time, rapport, or different approaches. Work with the Coordinator or Behaviour Prac if involved
Your duty of care doesn’t mean tolerating harm or distress We support both participant choice and staff wellbeing. If you're unsure about continuing support, speak to a Service Coordinator To formally request a change, submit an incident report under ‘Request to Not Work with Participant’ for review by Peter and Courtney.
