Together for tinnitus To mark Tinnitus Awareness Week 2017, the Trust’s Audiologists and Hearing Therapists joined forces with Birmingham & District Tinnitus Group volunteers to organise an information stand in the QEHB atrium. This year’s theme was ‘Together for Tinnitus’ and the aim was to generate discussion about tinnitus and raise awareness of the support provided by the British Tinnitus Association, who coordinate Tinnitus Awareness Week each year. Over 50 people visited the stand during the day and the team handed out information packs from the British Tinnitus Association (BTA). UHB’s Audiologists and Hearing Therapists, who are experts in the condition, offered advice and volunteers from the Birmingham & District Tinnitus Group discussed their experience of tinnitus, the help they have received and what worked for them. Martin Barnes, Audiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Audiology Centre, said: “We’ve had a great response to the stand and talked to patients, visitors and staff. The time spent talking about tinnitus and signposting people to sources of support was very worthwhile. “Hearing loss is a hidden problem and tinnitus is even more hidden. Actually, statistics show 1 in 10 people in the UK have the condition,
with 1 in 50 suffering really badly. We would encourage anyone who thinks they have tinnitus to seek advice and support. Don’t suffer – ask for help.” For more information about Tinnitus Awareness Week and the condition in
general, please visit the BTA website www.tinnitus.org.uk/taw2017 For information about the Birmingham & District Tinnitus Group, please see the Support Group information on page 13 or their website: www.tinnitusbham.org.uk

Award-winning singer Lucy Shaw
Delivering the best in care
BHBN Hospital Radio is supporting an awardwinning singer song writer in her campaign against knife and gun crime. Nineteen-year-old Lucy Shaw, who launched her second single ‘Gunshots’ nationally across the hospital radio network, said: “Growing up in Birmingham I am aware of the increase in gun and knife crime and the impact it has on families and all members of society. “I see the inhumane and absurd acts of violence that are causing such widespread suffering around the world through the use of weapons and I want it to end. People need to understand, particularly when they are young that actions have consequences and to quote Ghandi, ‘An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind’. I want to try and make a difference through my music.” The Secretary of State and MP for Bromsgrove Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP has given his support to
Lucy’s campaign. He said: “It is inspiring to see the determination of Lucy to sing about issues she is passionate about.” During the launch weekend Lucy requested people to listen to her track and to stop for a few minutes, have a conversation with their peers, children, nephews, nieces and grandchildren about the dangers of carrying weapons and why they may feel the need to possess them. She said: “No parent wants to believe their child would do this, no friend wants to lose a friend but in reality, some do. So, it’s about encouraging a conversation and supporting one another to say this must stop.” More information about Lucy can be found on all social media platforms and Soundcloud by searching lucyshawmusic. Gunshots is available to download on Spotify and iTunes.
