BBC’s flagship show celebrates NHS@70 To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS on July 5, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham hosted a live 90-minute evening broadcast from the atrium. The flagship BBC2 programme, broadcast on Tuesday 26 June, illustrated the enormous popularity of the nation’s favourite institution and examined some of the great challenges it faces. It was hosted by Nick Robinson and Anita Rani, with an audience made up of UHB staff, patients and other VIP guests, and was the centrepiece of the BBC’s NHS at 70 season – produced in partnership with The Open University. It looked in depth at how the service has grown over 70 years to impact on everyone’s lives. And, working with a group of Britain’s most

important health think tanks, the programme also featured exclusive new research into some of the major challenges facing today’s NHS. With his own recent experience of cancer treatment Nick Robinson investigated the question: how good is the NHS? The debate compared the NHS to health services in other countries and also looked at funding, how the service will cope with an ageing population and whether people should be doing more to look after their own health. As well as the serious discussions, the programme also featured heart-warming stories such as the first baby born in the NHS and one of the first nurses to join the organisation. Dame Julie Moore, UHB’s Chief Executive was one of the key guests.

Another guest was liver transplant patient Sarah Jones, aged 50, from Mold in Cheshire. She was interviewed about her recent, successful operation and was joined by dozens of the multidisciplinary team members from across the Trust who have been involved in her care. These included consultants, nurses, therapy staff, housekeepers, pharmacists, porters and HCAs. Sarah said she was delighted to take part “to thank the brilliant people” who have looked after her over the past few years. In preparation for the broadcast, BBC crews moved onto the site a couple of days before to build a ‘stage’ in the atrium. There was also a live link to the Birmingham Women’s Hospital where presenter Helen Skelton met midwives and mums.
