Brian Gooding

2025 Men’s President’s Cup Championship

The 2025 Men’s President’s Cup started in February and finished in June. Thank you to the 52 members who participated in the event, which made for an exciting tournament. There were many well-fought matches, but only two players would eventually square off in the final match.

Brian Gooding would face off against Jamie Yoshida in the final match of the 2025 President’s Cup.

After nine holes of play Brian Gooding has a 2 Up advantage going into the back nine. Jamie won the 10th and 11th hole to get the match back to even. Brian increased it back to 2 Up by birding the 12th and 13th hole to take a commanding lead going into the last 5 holes, the match was closed out on the 16th hole for 3 and 2 victory.

Well done to Jamie Yoshida for playing well throughout the tournament.

Congratulations to Brian Gooding for winning the 2025 Men’s President’s Cup Championship!

June 13 and 14, 2025, marked a significant event at Big Canyon: our final tournament, “The Closer,” held on our current golf course. With our own unique twist on the popular Ryder Cup format, this competition brought together six distinct teams – Swatty Pour, MBCGA, Toxic Water, Graves 2 Green, Nuclear Option, and the defending champions the Ditch Dawgs – all vying for the coveted ‘The Closer’ Champions title. Each team of sixteen players was proudly led by a captain, drawn from Big Canyon’s current and past presidents.

Day 1 of The Closer immediately set the tone with captivating pairings and intensely close matches. Excitement unfolded early in the morning, highlighted by three incredible Holes-In-One: Bart Thomsen on Hole No. 3, Greg Knapp on Hole No. 7, and Charles Ruck on Hole No. 15! As Day 1 concluded, Team Swatty Pour established an early lead with 21 points, closely followed by the Ditch Dawgs with 17 points. Graves 2 Green and MBCGA were tied with 16 points, while Toxic Water secured 14 points, and Nuclear Option finished the day with 12 points.

A competitive atmosphere filled the air for Day 2, the final round of matches. With six points available in each match, every team had a genuine chance to seize the lead. Players represented their teams with pride, delivering their best efforts to secure crucial match points.

When the dust settled, the final standings were Swatty Pour with 47 points, Graves 2 Green at 43 points, Nuclear Option close behind with 42 points, Ditch Dawgs at 41 points, Toxic Water with 34 points, and MBCGA with 33 points.

A massive congratulations goes out to the team of Swatty Pour! Their fantastic play throughout the tournament earned them the well-deserved title of The Closer Champions. The Closer truly was the perfect send-off, with two days packed with camaraderie, spirited competition, and plenty of good fun.

The Home and Home “Every New Friend is a New Adventure” Golf Tournament

The Home and Home “Every New Friend is a New Adventure” golf tournament with our sister club, La Jolla Country Club, took place on Tuesday, May 20.

Participants enjoyed a beautiful day on the course, joined by our guests from La Jolla. The event was expertly chaired by Katherine Bland and Ellen Small, who ensured a memorable experience for all.

New friendships blossomed, and old ones were rekindled—creating a buzz of excitement for the return visit in August, when we’ll head to La Jolla Country Club for the second half of this wonderful tradition.

The “Hasta La Vista, BABY” Farewell Frolic, brilliantly chaired by Cristy Clemo and Cecilia Goodman, was an unforgettable send-off to the season. Held on June 3, the event drew 71 enthusiastic players for a fun and spirited Tijuana Scramble tournament. The winners are pictured on page 11.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, lunch featured delicious fare and whimsical centerpieces—dump trucks overflowing with vibrant flowers—that captured the energy of the day. The final WGA Meeting of the year was also held, with a quorum present to wrap up a successful season.

It was truly inspiring to watch these young golfers navigate the course, sink impressive putts, and celebrate their shots. Beyond the scores, the championship was a wonderful opportunity for these young players to experience the excitement of competitive golf in a supportive and fun environment. Congratulations to the winners pictured above.

MEMBER Connection

Getting to know the Widder Family

14 July 2025

BCCC: What is your favorite event at BCCC and why?

TRACY: I would have to say the Women’s Balboa always gets me excited each year. I chaired the Balboa in 2018 and I know how much time, creativity and hard work goes into planning that event.

The Club always shines its brightest for the Balboa, and I am always so proud to show our guests what a beautiful club and classy tournament they are attending.

MARK: My favorite event at the club is 4th of July. The cookout on the driving range, the kid’s activities, music and all our family, neighbors and friends from Big Canyon before the huge fireworks display is an annual event for us that we never miss.

BCCC: In your opinion, what is the best part about being a member here?

TRACY: Our family moved from Arcadia to Big Canyon in 1997. We joined BCCC in 2004. I wasn’t an experienced golfer. I was very shy, (I know, hard to believe). June Kawamura encouraged me to join the “Niners” where I learned the game and had a lot of fun bonding with the ladies.

Weekend in Catalina
with Mark and Tracy Widder

Eventually, I joined the “18 Holers”. I played every Tuesday and Thursday, signed up for every tournament, clinics. and team. I also became a Women’s Golf Association Board member for many years.

Over the years, BCCC and golf have become a huge part of my life, but it’s the friendships I have made that are truly the most precious and best part about being a member.

BCCC: Do you have a favorite memory of the Club?

TRACY AND MARK: We would have to say one of the best days of our life was September 21, 2013. Our daughter and son-in-law had their wedding reception at BCCC. It was perfect in every way, and we still think of that day when we are upstairs and see those beautiful rooms. Since then, we have celebrated many birthday parties, baby showers and countless delicious meals with family and friends.

BCCC: What is your line of work?

MARK: Just out of high school in 1975, I went to work for my uncle and cousins at their wholesale produce company at the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market. In 1989, along with several other grower partners, my cousins and I founded Veg Fresh Farms, a wholesale produce distribution company in Orange County.

Today we grow and supply fresh produce to national fast-food restaurant chains and retail supermarkets. If you’ve had a Double-Double, shopped at Gelson’s, or had great salsa on your taco, you’ve probably enjoyed our tomatoes.

BCCC: What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of BCCC?

TRACY: I’ve always loved gardening and floral design. I am now retired from the floral business, but I still dabble in it for myself, friends, family and of course WGA events.

We are both obsessed with our three labradors and our five grandkids (ages one month to six years old) and spend as much time as we can with them.

MARK: During the summer we spend most weekends on our boat. You can find us anchored in the harbor, Emerald Bay, or the BYC station at Whites Cove in Catalina. Usually with some kids, grandkids, and dogs on board.

BCCC: Tell us something about your family that you treasure.

MARK: Having raised our son Clay and daughter Carrie in Newport Beach, we feel very fortunate to now see them become great parents to their kids. With them living close by, we are blessed to see and enjoy our kids and grandkids often. Now, we enjoy watching the older grandkids participate in the youth activities like Little Birdies, swim team, and summer camps.

Monthly Wellness Challenge!

stretCh Into suMMer!

This month, we’re challenging you to prioritize mobility and set the tone for every workout. Assistant Wellness Director Davin du Bois invites all members to join our Pre-Workout Stretch Challenge!

WHY STRETCH?

Dynamic stretching before exercise helps improve flexibility, prevent injury, boost circulation, and get your body ready to perform at its best.

NEED IDEAS?

Stop by the gym — we’d love to help you build a custom warm-up plan!

Create a 5–8 minute dynamic stretching routine to warm up before each workout this month.

Show your routine to a Wellness Team member anytime during July to be entered to win a complimentary 60-minute personal training session!

Monthly Wellness Tip

stand More, sIt less by Assistant Wellness Director, Davin du Bois

This month’s health-forward tip is simple but powerful: fight sitting disease. Did you know the average person sits over 12 hours a day? Prolonged sitting disrupts your body’s metabolic system and raises your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. But the good news? It’s easily reversible with small, consistent changes.

Here’s your movement checklist:

• Take a walking break every hour

• Stand or pace during phone calls

• Walk over to chat with a coworker instead of emailing

• Take the stairs — even one flight counts

• Stretch or move at your desk every 90 minutes

Even short bursts of standing or movement improve focus, productivity, and long-term health.

Need ideas to get moving? Visit the gym or Wellness team — we’re here to help!

Self-Defense Workshop Success

Our Self Defense Workshop for Women held on June 8 was a fun, action-packed activity for ladies of all ages. The workshop was conducted by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion, Gerson Sanginitto, and our very own Assistant Wellness Director Davin du Bois. Due to the popularity of the class, we will be bringing this back in the future.

Cotillion & Youth Supper Club

PRESENTING

ADDINGTON COTILLION & PROTOCOL

We are excited to provide Big Canyon’s youth with a new Cotillion and Youth Supper Club experience with Addington Cotillion and Protocol, led by Susan Werner. Cotillion is designed for third and fourth grade children, with Youth Supper Club geared to third to eight grade youth. The goal of the programs is to prepare Big Canyon’s youth for graceful and confident leadership and provide a distinctive edge to your child’s educational experience.

At Cotillion, the program is developed with more etiquette and interactive exercises than many traditional cotillions. At each session, dinner will be served, and instruction will focus on a specific dining component.

In Youth Supper Club, to make it more fun, participants will dance the twist with their parents. An added component is International Protocol. We hope you share an enthusiasm towards increasing the emphasis of etiquette in the Youth Supper Club, thereby creating a balance between etiquette and dance components. Both programs are open to children, grandchildren, and guests. A girl and boy who register together will be guaranteed registration. A waitlist will be maintained until a balanced class is achieved.

Registration will be accepted from July 1 to August 2 or until the class is filled.

Thursdays - October 9, November 13, January 15, 2026, February 12, 2026, (plus March 12 for Cotillion)

Cotillion 3rd and 4th grades - 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Youth Supper Club 5th to 8th grades - 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Fee for each program includes instruction and dinner.
