As we gear up for the warmer weather and summer adventures it is essential to take a moment to familiarize ourselves with Big Canoe's Public Safety Team's water and outdoor preparation safety tips This knowledge will not only enhance our outdoor experiences but also ensure they are safe and enjoyable.
The first step of any outdoor water adventure is ensuring we prepare supplies and equipment ahead of time to get the most out of those beautiful summer days. Start by making sure we take care of our health and the health of our friends and family. Everyone should be prepared for the sun with sunscreen. There are two types of sunscreen options available: chemical and physical. High-quality sunscreen lotion with a high SPF value will help reduce the damage created by UV rays. The stronger the SPF value the higher skin protection provided
Just a reminder sunscreen is recommended to be applied liberally and 15 minutes prior to exposure for optimal performance, also it's important to reapply throughout the day. The next option for UV protection is through physical barriers, these barriers come in the form of hats, umbrellas, and UV rated outdoor, and swim wear.
Now that we have prepared to venture outdoors here are a few tips to remember to ensure your safety while near or on the water. First off all boat occupants are required to have a personal floatation device (PFD) onboard the vessel with them. All children 13 years of age or younger are required to wear PFD while on the water in a watercraft. All watercraft should ensure they have
all required safety items onboard before departing the marina. This includes a fire extinguisher, horn or whistle, and also a throwable floatation device.
Also, hydration is important during the summer season; make sure everyone is continually hydrating while outdoors with proper fluids. Water and hydration beverages such as sports drinks and electrolyte replacement drinks are great options on those hot summer days
Another item that is handy to have is a lake map that identifies the different locations on the lake in case an emergency arises and you have to provide your location for emergency services. The final tip is being weather aware while outdoors, spring and summertime storms can pop up without warning so the ability to get weather updates while outdoors is critical. Both counties provide options through apps that you can download to receive emergency notifications. You can access these apps on the following page.

Hello neighbors! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Elaine Fitzgerald. I have lived in Big Canoe for 11 years. I was a Financial Analyst for Allstate Insurance Company for 15 years and then a Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch and UBS for 20 years. After retiring, I wanted to give back to my community and volunteered on the Big Canoe Finance committee as well as the Election committee. About 3 years into retirement, I applied for a job here at Big Canoe. The job started out as the POA Office Manager and HR Assistant. Over the past 2 and ½ years, my job has expanded to support the General Manager and POA Board of Directors, assist Property Owners with Architectural appeals, and ensure timely answers to Ask the POA. Customer service played an important role in my career, and it helps that I love talking to people! Therefore, it was an easy transition to broaden my role into Concierge and Amenity Membership.
What is a Concierge? Property Owners needed someone to call to either get an answer or be directed to the person who could answer their question. New Property Owners have lots of questions too, as we all know that Big Canoe is a little bit different than other neighborhoods. I am also here to help Realtors and potential property owners too! I anticipate the Concierge position to evolve over time based on the Property Owner’s needs.
While the Amenity Managers are your first point of contact, I will also be assisting the Amenity Managers with Membership. What does that mean? It is much easier to join an amenity now! Everything is automated, you can join via the ipads at the amenity or you can go online to our website and join. Once you complete and submit the form via the link, you will receive an email confirmation from me once it is processed. Of course, the Amenity Managers and I can also answer any questions that you have with the process. There are links to join, change, cancel and go on medical leave. There is even a link to sign up for a lot card. It really is that easy! I do know many of you already, however if we haven’t met, please introduce yourself to me when you see me around the community. Big Canoe is my forever home and I want it to be the best it can be!
