Gaylynne Mack This year marks the 14th Annual Dancing for Big Buddy event. While this has not been the ideal planning year, to say the least, D4BB2020 is a testament to the old saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”.

Big Buddy is very thankful to have Star Dancers, Sponsors, Professional Dancers, Studios, Judges, and a host of Volunteers helping us to make lemonade from a year of lemons. I do not have to list the numerous challenges and barriers thrown our way, but one thing I know for certain is that the work we do is even more important.

The funds raised through Dancing for Big Buddy directly support the services and programs targeted at connecting young people to positive relationships and experiences which inform their transition into healthy and productive adults.

Through your support of this event, each day, an average of 500 youth have access to creative programs which extend the classroom learning, opportunities to gain valuable workforce development skills, and guidance from caring adults who help to make the tangible connections between education and life-long success.

The variety of performances, messages from sponsors, and dedication of the Star Dancers are shining lights during this dark season for our world. If the compassion and generosity in the performances you will see tonight is any indication of the outlook for the future, we are going to come through this better than before. While the pandemic has prompted many changes, not all have been negative. We are excited about the ability to increase the viewership of the Dancing for Big Buddy show where an expanded audience will witness the talent and generosity we have been privileged to receive over the last 14 years. Monique Scott-Spaulding Welcome to Dancing for Big Buddy 2020 Virtual Experience! All of our lives have morphed into socially distant, highly sanitized, small familial units. Our children are managing virtual learning environments, birthday car parades, in home DIY celebrations, FaceTime connections, and holiday staycations.

The world has changed by bringing concerts via drive ins, sporting events with a cardboard cutout audience, and Dancing for Big Buddy streamed by our media partner WBRZ Channel 2.

Persistence, dedication, and donor support of the mission has allowed the Big Buddy Program to pivot to support over 500 children throughout Baton Rouge with computers for distance learning, art projects, STEAM kits for family centered activities, and mentorship to ensure that students thrive. Proceeds from Dancing for Big Buddy 2020 will provide internships, workforce development, and enrichment that shapes the future leaders of our city. Elif Chiasson A native of Istanbul, Turkey, I have claimed Baton Rouge, Louisiana my home since 1988 and in turn, this community and country embraced me as one of their own! Looking at graduate schools, I never envisioned coming to Louisiana, alas life had other plans. Over the last three decades here, I found success as an engineer. I found love and became mother to two beautiful individuals. Death found me. Cancer found me. Painful trials made me stronger; hopefully, in many ways better! Life brought me love again in the form of the most amazing life partner and husband.

Over my engineering career, I had the opportunity and the good fortune of working on notable and unique projects. In my current role as an executive at CSRS, while I no longer engineer, I immensely value the time I get mentoring younger engineers and professionals. I love the culture of servant leadership we cultivate at work. I believe that is the essence of personal growth and the growth of society.

I have never danced up until 4 years ago. Nope, not even ballet as a child!

Although I have always loved it and wanted to dance, growing up, my days were filled with schoolwork and playing the piano. I am finding out that learning new skills such as dancing is much harder as an adult than as a child. However, I also think that I am appreciating the journey more. I am also told dancing keeps not only your body but also your mind young. Well, I’ll tango to that!

What was your first experience as a leader, mentor, mentee?

Share any lessons learned!

According to my mother, I have come to the world ready to lead. I have vivid memories of myself as a young toddler conducting a chamber ensemble made up by boys older than me playing pots and pans! All kidding aside, I think we are leaders and mentors before we realize that we are one. Leadership is not about a position of authority. Much the same, mentorship is not a destination but a journey of giving to others, especially to younger generations the help, outreach, and lessons-learned from a life lived and learned. I am still learning and benefiting from mentors as I am mentoring and leading others.

How do you envision supporting education, mentorship, and workforce development through Big Buddy or other organizations in the immediate future?

I loved meeting my little buddy dancers, Ca’Myra and Skyler! When they said that math was both of their favorite subject, I was hooked. Both Ca’Myra and Skyler showed much thought in the way they have collaborated with each other through the activities on the Mentor Day of Service. I would love to help with any math or science subject either Ca’Myra or Skyler or any other little buddy may have.

Who are your biggest supporters for this experience? How will they support you for this event?

I am blessed with the most incredible support system for this journey–my husband who is the love of my life, my strength, the believer in me and the gentle hand pushing me to get out of my comfort zone and my work family whose mission is to Build Stronger, Smarter Communities Together! What better way to live that mission than supporting the amazing work The Big Buddy organization is doing! My coach and partner for this journey, who is not only a remarkable dancer and teacher, but also an incredibly patient, kind, and generous individual.

James “Big Brown” Joseph James “Big Brown” Joseph has spread so much love around Louisiana in his 21 years at UPS that he received the highest honor bestowed upon a UPS employee, the Jim Casey Community Service Award. The award, created in 1995, is named in honor of one of UPS’s founders and its long-time CEO. This is ‘Big Brown’s’ town. Everyone in the Baton Rouge area seems to know Joseph as “Big Brown” – that is a nickname easy to decipher. Joseph stands 6 feet 8 inches tall and wears a lot of brown.

Joseph played college basketball at Abilene Christian University in west Texas. After graduating, he toured the world for two years with the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters.

After playing pro basketball for several more seasons overseas, he returned home and took a seasonal job with UPS. He’s never left.

Joseph’s community service is far-reaching. In fact, it is so vast that he started a nonprofit, Big Brown Reaching Back, to bring order to all his work. He selflessly supports those around him, just as his mother, Lillie Joseph, did before she passed away in 2006. “We didn’t have much to offer,” Joseph remembers about his childhood, “but we shared all we had.”

Big Brown is happy to be Dancing for Big Buddy. This is yet another way he is demonstrating his love for giving back to the community. He hopes his participation will inspire other leaders to find ways to give back. Big Brown, as he always does, has put 100% into preparing his dance number which will represent both his commitment to young people and be representative of the UPS brand. When asked about his preparation for the event, Big Brown stated, “I’m excited, I’m ready, let’s raise some money for the children.”

Larger than life: Joseph’s Big Brown Reaching Back fund supports 20 different organizations, and has helped people made homeless by recent flooding in Baton Rouge, delivered toys for needy children, equipped schools, and provided meals for those in need. Many of Joseph’s fellow UPSers in Louisiana also have donated their time and money to assist with these efforts. *Taken, in part, from the UPS website article naming Big Brown as the 2017 Jim Casey Award Winner.

Katie Schellack This 40-year-old former fitness coach hails from North Carolina, but fell in love with Baton Rouge sixteen years ago after she completed her graduate studies in English and Linguistics. While she no longer teaches on the college level, she keeps her writing skills fresh by freelance writing for ‘inRegister’ magazine and for ‘Country Club of Louisiana Living’ magazine.

Katie serves the non-profit world by donating her proficiency as a grant-writer, most recently for Kids’ Orchestra (KO), an organization for which she serves on the board of directors.

Currently, this carpool queen is also the chair of KO’s 10 year anniversary giving campaign.

Additionally, Katie serves on the ‘Louisiana Defense Against Sexual Assault’ as a committee member for the ‘National Wear Denim Day 2020 & 2021’.

Lastly, Katie serves as a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Chapter of the ‘American Heart Association’, after overcoming heart disease and open-heart surgery in 2018.

Wildly important to Katie is ‘the Good Deposit’, a teaching group of women who learn to teach the gospel expositionally. “These ladies”, she says, “are my people. My teaching and relationships will never be the same due to their deep, heartfelt impact on my life.”

When asked why she commits her time in these various ways, Katie responded, “because life is all about relationships.

Relationships are all we have in this life.” This also sums up her commitment to fundraise for Big Buddy. “If we begin with the belief that we are all more alike than we are different,” she said, “then we can go places together. Children are our best hope of a better future. So, let’s go!”

Johnston von Springer Multimedia Journalist

Johnston von Springer A Multimedia Journalist, Johnston joined the WBRZ team full time in May 2017 after graduating from LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication with a B.A. in Mass Communication, focusing in journalism and a minor in political science.

Born in Dallas, TX, a young Johnston grew up reenacting newscasts for his family and friends. He knew his passion for current events and breaking news would lead him to a career in journalism. When he was asked what he enjoyed watching on TV as a kid, Johnston would surprise people by saying his favorite show was the local news.

What was your first experience as a leader, mentor, mentee?

Share any lessons learned! “While at LSU I served on the executive board of the Interfraternity Council. The biggest lesson I learned as a leader is to understand you will deal with all types of personalities, and whether you agree or disagree, you have to put the task at hand above personal feelings.

Others are counting on you!”

Most of our program participants are elementary and middle school age. What advice would you give to your 13-year-old self? “While having focus and drive is important, don’t push yourself too hard. You don’t want to burn out. Also, making mistakes is not the end of the world… learn from your errors!”

How do you envision supporting education, mentorship, and workforce development through Big Buddy or other organizations in the immediate future? “Through community service projects and fundraising for organizations close to my heart.”

Who are your biggest supporters for this experience? How will they support you for this event? My family and friends – so many have offered their support, whether it be $$ or through planning tables. Couldn’t do this without them!

Scott’s very first experience as a Mentor was through Boy Scouts. He has had the pleasure of participating in several “teach in” opportunities in local schools and tremendously enjoys the opportunity to give back to the community through mentorship. He enjoys meeting young people through organizations like Big Buddy and sharing insights to help during this crucial time in their lives as they try to find their way. He remembers working to help pay bills for his family when he was 13 and thinking “I have a lot of things figured out!”
