Noticias Breves Presidio airport open house to offer free flights to teenagers Saturday By SASHA von OLDERSHAUSEN PRESIDIO – Young Presidio residents will have the rare opportunity to take to the skies this Saturday as the Big Bend chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) hosts its Airport Open House at PresidioLely International Airport. Starting at 9am, pilots will offer free rides on a first-come, first-serve basis to Presidio residents between the ages of 14 and 17. The planes will fly in a continuous circuit from the airport to the intersection of the Rio Conchos and Rio Grande, to the east side of town – where passengers will be able to look down at their houses – and back to the airport. Chase Snodgrass, a pilot and spokesperson for the event, estimated that they would be able to provide anywhere between 50 and 80 free flights. The EAA, a volunteer recreational organization, has previously held open houses in Marfa. However, this is the first time the event will be held at the Presidio airport. Snodgrass said, “Presidio is often neglected on things like this. I think there’s a very large percentage of people in Presidio who haven’t even been near an aircraft. We want to make that opportunity available to them.” He added, “We want to share our love of flying and promote aviation to the younger crowd.” In addition to the free flights, a number of aircrafts will be on static display. Native Air will provide a PC12 air ambulance – the standard aircraft used for medical extractions. And Texas DPS will have a helicopter on display. The event is also aimed at highlighting the recent advancements to the Presidio airport, such as the new automated weather observation system, pilot’s lounge and refueling station. “All those things working together resulted in seven times more traffic than three years ago and enough fuel purchases to make the airport almost completely self-sustainable,” Snodgrass said. The PMDD, which has been instrumental in facilitating much of the development at the Presidio airport, will provide a lunch of hot dogs and drinks. The Presidio high school mariachi band will also perform. Those who plan to attend the open house are asked to arrive starting at 9 a.m. to register for their flight. Registration will close at noon. Additional information about EAA is available at www.eaa.org.
