FROM LOS ANGELES AND ORANGE COUNTIES VIA HWY. 330 / HWY. 18: From I-10 East to the I-210 West merger in Redlands, or from I-210 East, exit Hwy. 330 in Highland. Merge onto Hwy. 18 in Running Springs and follow to Big Bear Lake.

WINTER • Carry chains at all times from November to April. Be prepared to show chains at all times. • Chains go on drive wheels: front wheels of front-wheel-drive vehicles and rear wheels of rear-wheel-drive vehicles. • Keep your gas tank full.

Huggable trees The trees in Big Bear are downright huggable! Some notable trees worth taking a hike to include the Champion Lodge Pole (known as the largest lodge pole pine in the world) and the Aspen Grove, which shows off its brilliant display of golden leaves in autumn. Water-skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, parasailing and jet skiing can all be enjoyed on Big Bear Lake. Arrangements can be made at many of the marinas. The U.S. Forest Service offers tent camping in its National Forest campgrounds. RV camping is also available in the valley. Call 800-424-4232 for more information on RV parks.

You can rent a variety of boats, from pontoon, fishing, sail and speed boats to canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and paddle boats, or take a lake tour and enjoy a day in the sun at any one of the many marinas that surround Big Bear Lake’s 22 miles of shoreline. Permits are required for private boats and can be purchased at any marina.

Some of the finest freshwater fishing in California can be found in Big Bear Lake. There is an abundance of trout, bass, catfish, and blue gill to be caught. Big Bear Lake is also well known as a good trolling lake. You will need a fishing license, which can be purchased at sporting goods stores and marinas.

2.5 miles, very easy An asphalt path that wanders along the north shore of Big Bear Lake. Easily accessible for hikers, bikers, skaters, joggers, strollers and wheelchairs. It starts at Stanfield Cutoff and ends at the Solar Observatory.

WOODLAND TRAIL

1.5 mile loop, easy A unique nature trail with 20 posted stops. Pick up a pamphlet at the entrance and take the self-guided tour where you will learn about botany, geology and the wildlife of this woodland area. You can leave your car in the parking lot if it exhibits an Adventure Pass.

CHAMPION LODGEPOLE PINE TRAIL

.6 mile round-trip, easy The Lodgepole Pine Trail is on the south side of the lake and is a gentle walk down a path along a stream, ending up at the Champion Lodgepole Pine, one of the largest known lodgepoles in the world. Begin by driving up Mill Creek Road (Forest Road 2N10-dirt road) for 4.5 miles, turn right on 2N11 and continue one mile to the trailhead.

CASTLE ROCK TRAIL

2.4 miles round-trip, moderate Castle Rock Trail is one of Big Bear’s most popular trails. The trail begins one mile east of Big Bear Dam on Hwy. 18. On the south side of Hwy. 18 is a small brown sign that marks the trailhead. Park at the turnout along Hwy. 18. The elevation gain is 500’, making it a steep climb for the first .5 miles. The well-marked trail levels out for another .7 miles. At the top is an impressive granite rock outcropping providing 360º panoramic views.

PINE KNOT TRAIL

6 miles round-trip, moderate Hikers begin at the base of Aspen Glen Picnic Area, just south of Mill Creek Road. The trail meanders through stands of white fir and Jeffery pine. The trail leads to Grand View Point, altitude 7,784’. Avid hikers make the round trip hike in three hours or less. Mountain bikers take the Scenic Sky Chair to 2N10 west to 1E01 for a thrilling single track experience.

4-5.5 miles, moderate to difficult Starts .6 miles west of the Discovery Center on Hwy. 38. You will need an Adventure Pass to park in the trailhead parking area. On the trail you will walk through a wide variety of natural environments. The first mile is a gentle uphill climb, but after a mile or so you will realize you are gaining altitude. The Cougar Crest Trail ends at the junction of the world-famous 2,600-mile long Pacific Crest Trail.

9 miles, low intermediate A very popular novice ride that starts by taking the Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair. This ride has a 3-mile roller coaster ride to Grandview Point Junction. There you have the option to ride 2.5 miles to Grandview Point, where the view is beautiful and well worth the extra time.

GROUT BAY BIKE TRAIL

13 miles, intermediate This trail starts with a short paved climb from the Fawnskin fire station up to 3N14. Continue 2.5 miles to Hanna Flat campground. From there, Grout Bay Trail starts at the back of the campsite and starts climbing. The trail climbs and descends, ending your ride back in Fawnskin.

14.9 miles, advanced to expert You’ll need stamina and basic navigation skills for this loop. Start at Van Dusen Canyon Rd. (3N09) and ride up 3.5 miles to Holcomb Valley to 3N16 turn left, to 3N07 turn right, to 3N43 turn left to “The John Bull Trail” (3N10). It’s about 3 miles of technical riding before you come to 3N32; turn right to 3N16; take another right at 3N09, which will lead you back to your starting point.

Ranger Station

Multi-use single track is 15 miles one way; it offers built-in berms, fun up-downs, and spectacular views. The middle 8 miles of the trail are relatively flat, but each end has moderate climbs. Access the trail on the east end where the pavement ends on Club View Drive, and on the west end just past the junction of 2N10 and 2N17.

The Valley is Discovered Benjamin Wilson led a posse to search for Indians who had been raiding ranches in Riverside. Their search led them into the mountains. Once they reached the top of the mountain range they found the valley was swarming with grizzly bear, which is how Big Bear Valley earned its name.

1855-1859

Early Gold Gold is found in Big Bear Valley in 1855. By 1859 the first recorded mining is underway at Starvation Flats, near what is now the intersection of Division and Big Bear Blvd.

HISTORY 1888-1911

New Roads and Lodging Increase Travel to the Valley The Valley’s first resort lodging, the Bear Valley Hotel is opened. In 1908 the first circular trip through the mountains in an automobile was made and was completed in an amazing, 13 hours and 17 minutes. In 1911 construction is completed on a new dam replacing the old rock dam and tripling the amount of water stored in the lake.

Grizzly Bears Disappear Due to unregulated hunting, the grizzly bear’s native population was killed off.

The Gold Rush and Cattle Boom In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb discovered gold in the back country after tracking the bear’s blood trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. Soon enough Southern California’s largest gold rush was on. Cattle ranching began in 1879 where the present rodeo grounds are located at Shay Meadow. Cattle would expand to a big business in the Valley.

1883

Big Bear Builds a Dam and Creates a Lake Frank Brown begins construction on a dam across the Valley to capture water in a reservoir to supply citrus farms in Redlands. The dam was 300 feet long, 60 feet high and held 25,000 acre feet of water. Water began flowing in 1885.

1911-1925

Tourism Escalates as the Film Industry Discovers Big Bear The fledgling film industry discovered Big Bear to be an inexpensive place to make films and the popularity of Big Bear as a tourist destination boomed. An auto line started bringing hundreds of tourists to Big Bear. By 1914 the Crest Highway is completed which provided a relatively easy circular trip through the mountains. Tourism began in earnest with the onset of the automobile and the establishment of highways. In 1920 the community now boasted 600 cabins. By 1921 there was a building boom with 80 new homes, and 24 resorts and camps around the lake. In 1924 a concrete bridge was built across the dam to connect the new south shore road to the Village and the Rim of the World Highway. By 1925 better roads and transportation increased the number of resorts to over 200.

1928-1949

Winter Facilities are Built and Launches a New Era In 1928 a competition ski jump was built in the hills just west of the Village near Paine Road where the Elk’s Lodge is today. In 1938, to increase winter tourism, a newly formed Park District built a toboggan run with a sling lift on “Lynn Hill” behind the Village. The new winter facilities were a big success, causing more lodges and businesses to stay open year-round. The 30s and 40s saw an explosion of skiing and in 1949 the first ski resort opened.

1958-1961

Snowmaking Keeps Ski Resorts Open All Winter Snowmaking proved a viable solution for the area when Rebel Ridge Ski Area began experimenting with it. Snow Summit was the first to install it extensively in 1961. Big Bear Lake’s water supply allowed for the ski resorts to operate all winter in the case of a lack of natural snow.

2002

Big Bear Mountain Resorts Creates a Snowboarders’ and Skiers’ Paradise. Snow Summit bought Bear Mountain, and became Big Bear Mountain Resorts which created a dual mountain paradise for snowboarders and skiers to enjoy.

Hollywood’s Natural Back Lot Big Bear Lake has a history with the movie industry that dates back almost as far as the inception of filmmaking itself – and was once a popular escape for movie stars and other Hollywood elite. Today, this area continues to thrive as a topnotch filming location that attracts TV and film crews from all over the world to shoot against our scenic backdrop.
