It’s our 40th anniversary! It was in June 1977 that the Bible a Month Club (as it was called then) began. And now in 2017 I’m delighted to celebrate all that you’ve helped achieve in 40 years.

David Longley, the first co-ordinator of Bible a Month, was one of the first to write to me a couple of months ago when we asked for your memories and stories of being part of Bible a Month. I’m delighted to include a message from him, along with several others in this special edition anniversary newsletter.

Thank you so much to those of you who wrote in to me with your memories. I’ve really enjoyed reading them, and I’m sorry that we couldn’t include them all in this newsletter.

I hope you enjoy reading through this special edition and praying for our mission, of which you are very much a part.

Your support has achieved so much over the past 40 years; new translations have been finished, countless Bibles have been distributed, and millions of people have encountered Scripture.

Through faithful Christians like you, millions – yes millions – of lives have been enriched and changed through God’s precious word. Thank you for what you’ve made possible.

A significant impact

My time as Chief Executive at Bible Society is measured in months, not years. However, even in this short time I feel privileged to be associated with such amazing work and impacted by the significant contribution that Bible a Month supporters have made over 40 years of faithful support. Let me share a little of what I’ve experienced first-hand of that impact as I reflect on the significance of Bible a Month in this 40th anniversary year.

Only six days into my tenure, I visited Africa. One highlight was a trip to a Masai village in the Kenyan rift valley where around 35 villagers gathered to read the Scripture, newly translated into their language, and celebrate their faith in Jesus Christ. A few months later I made the first of two trips to China, where I’ve seen first-hand the incredible passion for the Bible that is one key characteristic of the Chinese Church.

What was extraordinary on those trips was hearing from government ministers and policy advisors concerning the impact of the Bible on Church growth: there is a widespread recognition in China of the power of the Bible itself to transform lives and communities.

Earlier this year I was in the Middle East, learning directly of the remarkable way in which Muslims are asking for copies of the Bible in their own language and how many are coming to faith as a result of reading the Scripture under the direction of the Holy Spirit. I also met with Christian Iraqi refugee families with stories of their escape from ISIS and the incredible comfort that they found in the Scripture during long periods of uncertainty, confusion and desolation. The power of the Bible is the same at home as it is overseas. God longs to encounter each of us by his Holy Spirit and draw us to himself through Jesus Christ no matter where we are or what language we speak. We see real signs of hunger and openness to

God and the Bible in a context where for many years we’ve got used to cynicism and indifference. We believe God is mobilizing the Church for a new wave of mission in Britain and we’re gearing up to be part of that movement.

But to respond to all of these incredible opportunities, whether in Britain or beyond, we must first ensure that we ourselves remain hearers and doers of the word. At Bible Society we’re particularly challenged at present by Isaiah 43.19. We believe God is calling us to lift our eyes and focus our minds on what he is doing in the world today.

Forty is a significant number in Scripture. Whether we’re talking 40 days, weeks or years, often what follows such a period of struggle, dedication, resistance to temptation or faithfulness is a breakthrough of some kind into more of God’s purposes.

What kind of breakthrough does God have in store for us all as we partner together in Bible mission? That question excites me and I draw encouragement from the 40 years of faithful support and giving that Bible a Month represents. Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity. Thank you for your vision and encouragement.

In this special edition, we give you an update from four of our key missional areas At home in this country Our work at home includes Bible campaigns, Bible engagement materials for Christians, cultural and political advocacy, and first-class engagement in education.

In over 2,500 schools, our team of 14,000 volunteers are dramatically bringing the Bible to life with children during assemblies. In Westminster, we’re advocating for the Bible and the value of its teachings in national politics. We also recently launched Bible Book Club, a method of encouraging groups of friends to explore the Bible one book at a time.

Specifically in Wales, we are bringing the Bible to life through our visitor centre, Mary Jones World, and through Welsh language Bible engagement initiatives.

Since the publication of beibl.net (the latest Welsh Bible translation) in 2015, we have been producing resources in Welsh to encourage more people to read the Bible – and then live differently as a result – Byw y Beibl (Live the Bible) is the 2017 challenge to do just that!

China According to official figures, there are some 40 million Christians in China, with a further million coming to faith each year. So demand for Bibles is high. We’re supporting the Amity Printing Co. in Nanjing which prints 40,000 Bibles daily.

China has many minority ethnic groups speaking their own languages, such as the Black Yi people, who live in the far south of the country. Over the last 14 years we’ve worked with local people to translate the Bible into the Black Yi language for the first time.

Meanwhile, we’re also supporting future pastors in China by providing study books and Bibles at Nanjing’s leading theological seminary. This helps ground the future pastors in the word of God. It’s vital as today, each church pastor tends a flock of some 6,700 people.

Africa In sub-Saharan Africa your generosity is helping us to be active in six key countries; Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville, Malawi, Mozambique, South Sudan and Swaziland.

We are strengthening our existing work in countries like South Sudan, where despite the hardships of conflict and severe famine there is good news too.

The Mabaan Bible was recently translated well ahead of time, and Bible Society supporters raised more than £20,000 to support famine relief.

We’re also entering and establishing partnerships in new areas, like Mozambique, where new ‘Bible hubs’ are being set-up across this vast country to aid Scripture distribution to unreached areas.

Middle East In the midst of war, violence and persecution, we are working to bring the Bible to life in the Middle East in places like Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.

We’ve now been active in the region for the best part of 200 years.

Prayer pointers

• Pray that Bible Book Club will inspire people to explore the Bible in new ways.

• Pray for our family of Storytellers who go into primary schools regularly, that they will be encouraged themselves, and encouraging others to join their team.

• Pray that the team at Mary Jones World would be able to meet each person visiting ‘where they’re at’ and help them learn more about the Bible.

• Pray that our Welsh Bible engagement

activities and resources would reach a wider audience and would have a positive impact.

Prayer pointers

• Praise God for the millions of Christians coming to faith each year in China.

• Pray that new Christians in China would be

able to discover God’s word for themselves.

• Give thanks for new Bible translations for minority ethnic groups, like the Black Yi people.

• Pray for more people to come forward for training as pastors to lead the growing Chinese Church.

Prayer pointers

• Thanksgiving for new partnerships to bring the Scriptures to more people in places like Mozambique.

• Pray for an end to famine in South Sudan, and praise God for continued Bible work there.

• Pray for wisdom as our teams in Africa decide which areas of Bible translation, distribution and engagement work are the top priorities over the next few years.

Prayer pointers

• Pray for God’s protection over our teams and Bible bookshops in countries in the region where conflict is rife.

Our teams distribute Bibles, alongside necessities like food and toiletries, to families in refugees camps, and help local churches offer Bible-based trauma healing to those who have witnessed the horrors of war.

• Praise God for all those turning to Jesus

We also run bookshops in the region, including one in Aleppo, the war-torn city in Syria. We’re seeing an unprecedented demand for God’s word, both from Christians in the region and Muslims who are turning to Jesus.

• Pray for more volunteers and churches to

Vicki Devoz: I started supporting it (Bible a Month) when I lived in Australia in the 1980s. I loved the fact late that I could be a part of getting God’s word people’s hands and he into arts that I would neve r meet, although hope there will be many in he fully aven!

We are delighted to say that we share the same 40th Anniversary with Bible a Month as in 1977 we accepted Jesus Christ as our Saviour and our lives were changed forever. It was during an original gap year when we drove in our Land Rover 40,000 miles through 29 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. We met up with missionaries in Nigeria and they gave us a Bible, which we found challenging to understand.

Joanna Martin: I have been a supporter of Bible a Month Club since the late 1970s.

The very clever thing about the Bible a Month Club is that the monthly contribution has always been very small.

Something even a student can manage. As a result, I have kept up my subscription ever since I joined up, including during the time when I left work to became a student.

I think the Bible Society does an immensely important and wonderful work and I am very proud to be a supporter.

Rowena Merson: My father was a supporter of Bible Society back in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s and he was the Secretary for the local Bible Society group at our church. At much the same time as my father was involved in this work, I was attending Sunday School and it was there that I learned about Mary Jones and her Bible!

At the end of the ‘70s my family and I went to live in North Wales and we used to visit Bala regularly, and I always felt that something was missing by there not being anywhere which commemorated Mary’s amazing achievement and the beginning of Bible Society. So, I was absolutely thrilled when I got to visit Mary Jones World in Bala, last summer! It is a perfect tribute to an amazing girl.
