Born in New York, raised in both England and the Netherlands, Bibi studied Fine Art first in Florence before specialising in sculpture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, then completing her studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. A trained sculptor and jewellery designer Bibi now works and creates both to global acclaim in her studios in Amsterdam and Portugal.
Our jewellery-making process is inspired by nature and grounded in traditional craftsmanship, with an eye for detail that is innovative and transformative. Bibi hand-sketches and sculpts every idea before each piece is hand-carved first in wax before setting with precious stones and positive energy to create ‘miniature sculptures,’ and unmistakable Wearable Works of Art.
“I am a sculptor. I knew from an early age that was my direction in life, then became mesmerised by the whole creative process and technique of creating jewellery. What began as very academic became very conceptual as I rolled deeper and deeper into the jewellery world. I am still completely intrigued by art you can wear and how to tell a story set in a new context.”

“Alligators are strong personalities who can swim against the tide. My alligators symbolise individuality, protection, and strength. Each piece is intricately carved to replicate these reptiles in jewelled miniature.”
The Alligator family continues to grow in personality and pieces, innovating new techniques to twist, wrap as well as add ‘bite’ to earrings, rings and necklaces. Transformative pieces combine a sense of fun with skillfully crafted jaws that ‘snap’ shut and bodies ‘twist’ into a wrap ring or bracelet. Carved gemstones, include amethyst, citrine, opal, lapis, sapphires and diamonds. Beware of eyes that catch the light and flash in tsavorite.

By turns tranquil and awe-inspiring, the ever-changing, humbling energy of the ocean inspires the latest Bibi van der Velden collection, Waves. Over the last few years, Bibi has created a life with her family in Portugal, where her house overlooks the North Atlantic Ocean, surfing has become a vital part of Bibi’s life. Inspired by the ocean’s might and its cleansing, regenerative nature, Bibi has envisioned the sea with her sculptor’s eye, to create a jewellery collection that draws on the oceans’s mythical and organic qualities.
Bold, striking rings are shaped like sea goddesses or mysterious mermaids swimming in precious stones. Earrings take on sculptural shapes that evoke the surging force of a breaking wave or imagine a glimpse of a mermaid’s tail as a single stud. And the sinuous, organic form of sea kelp becomes a bracelet in gleaming gold.
This captivating collection also nods to the need to protect the ocean and its wildlife, and the crucial role the sea plays in maintaining the planet’s delicate equilibrium.

“I am always inspired by nature, its ever-changing, unexpected beauty. When designing I find the scarab beetle as precious as a gemstone and even more intriguing. Life and jewellery should be technicolour, just like the many moods and colours of sacred scarab wings.”
Always mindful to work with sustainable materials, real scarab wings are carefully sourced from Thailand, before these preserved wings are transformed into regal pieces of jewellery to adorn rings, bracelets, studs, and our scarab necklace. Prized as an auspicious symbol of good fortune since Ancient Egypt, Bibi finds beauty in nature and transformes the sacred scarab wing into showstopping creative fine jewellery.
