INTRODUCTION

The journey of becoming an interior designer has been long and tough. It involves more than just creative work; it's also about navigating complex legalities and contracts. Initially, I assumed the role was all about drafting plans and 3D modeling. However, I quickly realized there was much more to it.

As a beginner, grasping the intricacies of laws and contracts is challenging. This is where the Professional Practice module proves invaluable. In this module, we were grouped into teams to explore various topics, which improved our teamwork skills and deepened our understanding of legal and contractual matters. Additionally, we were tasked with designing and presenting our research to teach our peers, effectively combining learning and teaching.

The primary objective of this module is to enable us to self-study and acquire crucial knowledge for our future careers. It's less about mastering every detail and more about recalling pertinent laws when necessary. I believe this module is one of the most practically useful subjects, preparing us to navigate the future of the interior design industry.

ASSIGNMENTBRIEF

ASSIGNMENT 1 - LEGISLATIVE & REGULATIVE DIMENSION OF INTERIOR DESIGN

As future graduate interior designers, it is crucial for students to have a thorough understanding and vocabulary related to the contractual, professional, and legislative terms used daily with clients, contractors, peers, authorities, and the general public.

This assignment introduces the standards of Professional Conduct and Practice, aiming to outline the general professional behavior and self-discipline expected of interior designers registered with the Board of Architects (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia).

Students are required to reference documents closely related to the legal and regulatory framework in practice, such as the Architects Act 1967, Architects Rules 1996, Uniform Building ByLaws 1984, PAM/MIID Contract, and other relevant regulatory provisions.

TOPIC: CONTRACT

Our group was assigned the topic of Contract and were given the choice to refer from MIID Contract or PAM Contract. We chose to focus on MIID Contract and highlighted pertinent clauses in the contract.

EXERCISE1

REFLECTION

The first assignment in the professional practice module was like diving straight into the cold ocean. It’s an assignment unlike from any previous courses. It requires a legal mind and logical reasoning to make sense of the terms and conditions in the contract agreement.

The assignment required creating a style scape. My group focused on the pertinent clauses in the MIID contract and it was a lengthy read. There were many pertinent clauses my group and I thought should be added in the style scape but we had a limited space to add information. Fortunately, Ar. Yasmin helped us decide on which clauses to add (only a few did not make it in) in order to make the clauses seem informative and give better understanding of the contents in the contract.

My group struggled to lessen the information into short bullet points because of a lack of word replacement for certain legal words and sentences. Additionally, our lack of familiarity with creating a style scape led to several trial-and-error issues in terms of the overall design.

Finally, after completing the assignment, I found that I gained a better understanding of the terms and conditions in an MIID contract agreement involving the client(employer), interior designer, and contractor.

ASSIGNMENTBRIEF

ASSIGNMENT 2 - KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK

This assignment offers students the chance to learn from invited speakers from various countries and companies, providing a broad understanding of professional practices. Students can register for multiple webinars, choosing lectures that align with their interests and goals.

Additionally, forums allow students to share ideas with peers, gaining new perspectives and knowledge. This combination of webinars and forums equips students with practical insights and a diverse skill set for their future careers.

FORUM & PDW MIND MAPS

Each student must attend six webinars for this assignment and summarize them in a mindmap format.

As for the three forums held every other week, students must post their opinions, engage in discussions, and then summarize both their own and their peers ' opinions in a mindmap format.

FORUM 2 : LOCAL AUTHORITY

TOPIC: LOCAL AUTHORITY

ABSTRACT: A COMPLETION AND COMPLIANCE

CERTIFICATE (CCC) IS AN ESSENTIAL LEGAL DOCUMENT ISSUED BY THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN MALAYSIA. IT SIGNIFIES THAT A BUILDING PROJECT HAS BEEN COMPLETED ACCORDING TO APPROVED PLANS AND COMPLIES WITH MALAYSIAN BUILDING CODES, REGULATIONS, AND SAFETY STANDARDS IN MALAYSIA, IT IS MANDATORY TO OBTAIN A CCC BEFORE A PROPERTY CAN BE LEGALLY OCCUPIED CCC CONFIRMS THAT A BUILDING IS SAFE FOR OCCUPATION, EMPHASIZING PUBLIC SAFETY. IT ALSO HIGHLIGHTS THE COMPLEXITIES AND DILIGENCE INVOLVED IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS, UNDERLINING THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPARENCY, ADHERENCE TO REGULATIONS, AND COOPERATION BETWEEN DEVELOPERS AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO ENSURE THAT STRUCTURES MEET THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE.

IS CCC RELEVANT FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS? CAN WE SUBMIT THE BUILDING PLAN (BP) AND CCC TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES? WHO IS THE PSP? IS A CCC STILL VALID WHEN A RENOVATION/ALTERATION TO THE ORIGINAL PLANS ARE DONE? HOW WILL YOU ADVISE YOUR CLIENT?

EXPAND AND DISCUSS THE ABOVE IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERIOR DESIGN.

FORUM 3 : UBBL 1984

TOPIC: UBBL GUIDELINES ON FIRE SAFETY IN BUILDINGS.

ABSTRACT: BUILDING DESIGNS COMPLY WITH MALAYSIA S UNIFORM BUILDING BY-LAW (UBBL)

1984, COMBINING BOTH PASSIVE AND ACTIVE FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS FOR COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY MEASURES. CAN UBBL GUIDELINES BE FURTHER IMPROVED TO ADDRESS EMERGING CHALLENGES AND ADVANCEMENTS IN FIRE SAFETY? WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD YOU PROPOSE FOR IMPROVING THE

EFFECTIVENESS OF UBBL GUIDELINES IN ENSURING FIRE SAFETY IN BUILDINGS BUT NOT LIMITING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND INNOVATION?

WE MUST HAVE ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF FIRE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SPACES WE DESIGN. DISCUSS IN DETAIL WHY FIRE SAFETY IS IMPORTANT FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS, AND NOT ONLY ARCHITECTS DISCUSS

REFLECTION

This assignment was an opportunity for me to expand my knowledge in other industry fields. It involved attending webinars on topics of my choice and summarizing them in a mind map format. A format that creates a better and lasting understanding of the topics. Various companies and universities shared extensive knowledge on how to brand oneself and plan for the future after graduation.

Students were tasked to attend a minimum of six webinars. Three of which were mandatory webinars and the other three were of our own choosing. We were required to take screenshots and write down short notes for the mind maps. A few of the speakers were simple enough to understand with aid from their slides, while others required a higher level of expertise to grasp.

This assignment gave me the opportunity to reflect on myself and gain diverse knowledge. The time spent on this task has enriched my understanding and established a foundation for my future.

ASSIGNMENTBRIEF

ASSIGNMENT 3 - FUTURE PRACTICE (FORMATION OF IDCP)

REFLECTION

This assignment was eye-opening as it gave me a peek into the steps to prepare in order to establish an interior design consultancy practice (IDCP). My partner and I chose to establish a body corporate company. It provided an in-depth research of the financials involved in running a big company, allowing me to deeply understand the reality of profit margins and the amount of projects a big IDCP needs to do monthly to maintain afloat as a business.

Through creating a style scape, I had a better understanding about an IDCP company ' s services and employee welfare. After COVID-19, many companies have adopted new regulations such a four-day workweek, or three days work from office and two days work from home.

This assignment served as a good opportunity to research how to proceed with establishing an IDCP in future. I found myself wishing for more projects like this that are conducted in such an engaging manner.

ASSIGNMENTBRIEF

ASSIGNMENT 4 - ASSIGNMENT 4 - BY-LAW APPLICATION AND PREREQUISITES

FOR BUILDING PLAN SUBMISSION

This assignment allows students to apply their knowledge gained in Project 1 into their individual projects in AlAD. Each regulatory, legislative, and technical provision must be illustrated into an informative report presentation with dimensions, drawings (including isometrics) and materials where necessary. Students will be assessed based on their ability to explain and apply knowledge and understanding to their Final AIAD2 Project.

This exercise serves as a working paper for AIAD. Students' design shall not change or be influenced by the laws due to both module's time constrain factor, instead, it acts as an overall guideline to address the next forthcoming steps before finalizing the building plans. Thus, students are asked to identify non-compliance by marking an (x) and describing the next course of action for design rectification. This rigorous process is essential to ensure compliance with the law before the drawings can be submitted to the Local Authority.

REFLECTION

This assignment was individually tasked and required a compilation of the information learnt from previous assignments whilst linking it with our AIAD project. Unlike other groups, my knowledge in contract agreement from the first assignment was not as useful in creating the style scape. However, through the exchange in knowledge from Exercise 1 and Miro board, I could grasp a decent level of understanding about topics like Fire Safety and Disabled Accessibility.

My Purpose Group for my AIAD project was "Place of Assembly", a place whether public or private, used for the attendance of persons for or in connection with their social, recreational, educational, business or other activities, and not comprised within group I to VI. Using UBBL 1984, I could review regulations and identify what my building lacked and what it needed, making this a valuable learning experience.

One challenging aspect was calculating the stairs. Determining the width of the stairs based on the load of the entire space and performing other precise measurements was somewhat difficult for me.

CONCLUSION

I had a vague understanding of the contents of this module and knew it would be beneficial for a future career in the interior design industry. However, I did not realize how in-depth the coursework would be. This module taught me about laws, regulations, and contracts using the UBBL 1984, Architects Act, MIID/PAM contract.

Through this experience, I have learned the legal details I need to consider when working in the interior design industry and the steps I need to do in preparation for setting up an interior design consultancy practice. Therefore, I consider it a great opportunity to have taken this module.

Despite the many difficulties and frustrations, and recognizing my faults through doing the assignments, I learned a lot through the process. I have gained invaluable knowledge and experiences. For that, I am sincerely thankful to Ar. Yasmin.
