BUILDING BETTER

THE MAGAZINE OF THE BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF SAN DIEGO Celebrating Years JANUARY 2023 RECAP OF 2022

BIA CELEBRATES 85 YEARS OF BUILDING AND DEVELOPMENT IN SAN DIEGO

This year BIA of San Diego County acknowledges its 85 years of building strong communities, creating quality jobs, and advocating for housing. Our 700-member companies represent one of the most important driving forces in our local economy – HOUSING. Our members serve as job creators, community builders, and employ thousands of hard-working individuals within the building industry.

BIA San Diego celebrates this milestone with a new logo and website. We are focusing on the people within BIA; the faces of our everyday “housing heroes." BIA’s rebrand and refresh is bold and bright and continues to represent the diversity of the communities we develop to house San Diegans.

We are grateful to Capstone Studios, for their collaboration and expertise.

A MESSAGE FROM

Lori Holt Pfeiler

It’s 2023. Are we ready? There is a lot to contemplate for our industry. Rising interest rates, policy makers that believe subsidized housing is better than market rate, and increasing difficulty finding the workforce necessary to be successful. How will our Association work on these issues?

First, we will update our Strategic Plan. What is our focus going forward, how will we be successful in this current environment, how will we house the families already in San Diego looking to establish their own household?

Secondly, the Housing Finance Committee will start work on the question of economic impacts to new development. While traditionally we work on policy questions, this committee will take a different look by assessing economic impacts and make recommendations we can take on as an association. For example, what will banks finance and how can we broaden their reach?

A strong communications plan is coming to fruition. We will communicate WHEN we are testifying, WHAT we are saying, and HOW our members can participate. We will support our members with up to date information on policies and activities of our organization. We will know one another and be able to support one another to accomplish our common goals.

More than ever, our Association is critical as we maneuver the regulatory environment we face today. Our voice will continue to celebrate building homes for families. We are the Housing Heroes. Everyone wants a safe, affordable place to live. We all take tremendous pride when we are successful in achieving that right place to live, whether it is renting or owning. That won’t happen unless we raise our voices together, ALL our voices; the trades, the builders, the associates, those new to the industry and those that have been through many cycles. We are all in it together. 2023 is here. We have plenty of work to do.

Matt Adams

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS, BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF SAN DIEGO

Matt Adams has often led the charge for more affordable homes throughout the San Diego region. If there is a new policy under consideration that could hurt or help housing production, Matt often is the first to know. Well-liked and wellnetworked, Matt can pull together a coalition of voices in a hurry to lobby for or against proposed housing legislation. For these reasons and more, the Building Industry Association of San Diego County is inducting Matt Adams into the BIA San Diego Hall of Fame.

“I can think of no one more deserving of this honor than Matt,” said Lori Holt Pfeiler, President and CEO of the BIA. “Matt is everything you’d want from a housing hero – he’s whip smart, he’s affable, he knows everyone in town, and he works tremendously hard. Matt is just as effective on the front lines as he is back in the office planning and strategizing. Matt is a trusted partner – the BIA’s chief political and policy advisor – and I’m very happy for him.”

Locally, Matt is often contacted by the press to analyze and discuss policy decisions regarding housing. Just the other day, Matt was quoted in a frontpage story in the Union-Tribune lamenting the sale of land to a luxury spa that has spent years and millions of dollars opposing plans for middle income and affordable homes adjacent to the spa.

“My first reaction was a combination of frustration and sadness because of the loss of desperately needed housing,” Matt told the newspaper. “It underscores the Herculean effort it takes to get housing produced in this region and that is really a tragedy."

“There are a lot of people in this industry who are housing heroes. People I greatly respect and admire. It’s an honor to be mentioned with them. I too am forever grateful to the BIA and its members who go to bat every single day for the people who build homes and for the people who desperately need those homes. It’s my hope that our region steps up and eliminates this housing crisis by building more homes for middle income and lower income individuals and families.”

As Vice President of the BIA, Matt serves as the senior policy advisor for the 85-yearold trade association. He leads and directs the efforts of the BIA governmental affairs staff. He serves as senior staff to the BIA’s Political Action Committee, which evaluates candidates and ballot measures that impact the building industry. Prior to joining the BIA in 1997, Matt served as Chief of Staff to then Assemblyman Jan Goldsmith.

Matt is involved in several community planning organizations. He served as Chair of the Grantville Stakeholders group which advised the City of San Diego on the Grantville Community Plan Update. He also served on the Navajo Community Planning Group for 17 years, serving as chair for 8 years.

Matt is married to Ann Marie Adams. The couple, who have been married for 35 years, have three children: Madison, Spencer and Sydney, and a granddaughter, Millie.

Matt will be honored at the BIA’s Installation Celebration on February 4, 2023 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Please join us as we honor Matt’s long history of exemplary contributions to the housing industry.

The San Diego BIA Hall of Fame recognizes and honors individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the San Diego building industry. Candidates are selected from all segments of the building industry and related fields that meet the criteria. Since 1994, the BIA has inducted 37 honorees.

BIA CARES DONATES $24,000 TO URBAN STREET ANGELS TO HELP END YOUTH HOMELESSNESS IN SAN DIEGO

I have always felt enormous gratitude for the impact that BIA Cares has had in supporting our fight to end youth homelessness on the streets of our community. At the 2022 Installation Dinner special guest Sam the Cooking Guy, generously auctioned off two dinners, prepared by the chef extraordinaire himself, and raised $24,000 for Urban Street Angels in the process! Needless to say, all of us at Urban Street Angels have profound appreciation for the BIA family for the continued support of our mission to end youth homelessness.

We so appreciate the support as this will allow us to get more youth off the streets by providing employment, job and life skills training and of course all the basic needs our youth have leaving the streets behind for good. We couldn't do it without you! Every night, over 1,000 youth sleep on San Diego streets. Our mission is to assist youth in finding a sustainable path where they never have to return to the streets again. BIA Cares has been a stalwart supporter of our mission since 2017 when we had less than 20 beds available for homeless youth - today, we have over 150 beds and we continue to expand our scale, scope of services, and impact every year. As a direct result of this partnership, Urban Street Angels is able to save more youth, and this year, we aim to grow our capacity to 200 beds.

Please check out our website at www.urbanstreetangels.org and learn more about how you can get involved in our effort! Thank you once again to BIA and BIA Cares, for investing in the lives of homeless youth who are so desperately in need of the hope and belief that they CAN DO IT!

MATT ADAMS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM BIA FOLLOWING 25 YEARS OF SERVICE

ORGANIZATION HAS BEGUN SEARCH FOR ITS NEXT VICE PRESIDENT

The Building Industry Association of San Diego County (BIA) is losing a housing hero as Matt Adams has announced he is retiring on March 31st following a long and successful career that spanned 25 years with the BIA.

“It has truly been an honor to be part of such a tremendous organization for the past 25 years and to advocate for housing – a cause I deeply believe in,” Adams said. “While it has been quite a ride, I very much look forward to the next chapter of my life as my wife and I focus on being full time grandparents.”

Adams, Vice President of the BIA, is the organization’s Chief Political and Policy Advisor. He has been a leading voice for housing in the region and has worked tirelessly to advocate for middle-income and affordable housing. He has often led the charge for more affordable homes and has been a trusted partner in the BIA's efforts to support prohousing policies, quality jobs, and strong communities.

Lori Holt Pfeiler, President and CEO of the BIA, said: "Matt has been an invaluable member of the BIA team and it is bittersweet to see him retire. Matt embodies everything an ideal colleague brings to the table. He is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and incredibly dedicated to his work. For years, Matt has set the tone for how the BIA influences policy on behalf of the people who build homes and the San Diegans who rely on those homes. We are immensely grateful for all that Matt has done for our organization, for the housing community, and for the region."

She continued: “While we are sad to see Matt go, we are excited about the opportunity it creates for the BIA to bring in another experienced political and policy advisor to help achieve our goals, and we have begun the process of finding Matt’s replacement."

Jerry Sanders, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, said: “Matt has deservedly earned his place as a “housing hero” for our region over decades of incredible work to make living in San Diego possible for countless families. Our members, leadership, and staff respect Matt immensely and will certainly miss his thoughtful, collaborative, and humorous approach to the most important policy discussions we face. While his absence in City Hall or at the Board of Supervisors will obviously be felt, we thank him for his commitment to San Diego’s future.”

Raul Campillo, the San Diego City Councilmember who represents the San Carlos neighborhood where Adams and his wife live, added his voice to chorus of commendations for Adams, saying: “The City of San Diego is in a better place because of Matt Adams. Throughout his illustrious career, Matt has been a trusted advisor not only to the building industry, but to our city administration as well, as his voice was crucial in shaping District 7’s Grantville Community Plan Update. Matt’s voice was also a major asset to the Navajo Community Planners during his time as a board member there. On behalf of all of District 7, I would like to thank Matt for his work and wish him all the best in retirement.”

Outside of work, as a dedicated member of the San Diego community with a passion for good governance, Adams has been actively involved in community planning organizations, including serving as Chair of the Grantville Stakeholders group and as a member of the Navajo Community Planning Group for 17 years, eight of which he served as chair.

Adams’ work in the government relations space is guided by his years in Sacramento prior to joining the BIA, where he as Chief of Staff to former Assemblyman Jan Goldsmith. There he developed and honed expertise in the legislative process which he brought to bear on behalf of the San Diego building industry and the residents who rely on it.

Adams will be inducted into the BIA San Diego Hall of Fame. He will be honored at the BIA's Installation Celebration on February 4 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The BIA San Diego Hall of Fame recognizes and honors individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the San Diego building industry. Since 1994, the BIA has inducted 37 honorees.

BIA CARES 2022 HOLIDAY BIKE DRIVE

Because of the generosity of so many of YOU, BIA Cares provided 231 bicycles for this year's BIA Cares Holiday Bike Drive. 2022 continued to be a challenge for the Bike Drive with our biggest obstacle the supply and availability of bikes. The Bike Drive prevailed due to our long-standing relationship with our Walmart partners. Our BIA membership again expressed their generosity and provided us with the funds needed to buy bikes for disadvantaged youth throughout San Diego County. Here are the stats for this year's BIA Cares Bike Drive:

231 bikes were purchased during the holiday. BIA Cares made purchases at 9 different Walmart stores in San Diego County. Over 65 charitable hours by BIA Cares board members for pick-up & delivery of bikes. Bike purchases were made by BIA Cares board member Eric Jones. Deliveries were made by BIA Cares board members Eric Jones (Life Director), Mark Ellis (2023 Secretary/ Treasurer), Karen Amelio (Life Director), and Ryan Swenson (2023 President).

A very special THANK YOU to Eric Jones, BIA's very oven Santa's Helper, who has devoted his time, talent, and love for the community to this annual project for the past 27 years placing 11,930 bikes into the hands of San Diego youth. With this year's historical challenges, the BIA Cares Holiday Bike Drive shows the spirit and charitable giving the building industry has had for the last 28 years. We hope you will join us again in 2023 with your kindness and generosity.
