02|WELCOME CENTER

The University of Kansas is in need of a new welcome center in front of the famous Chi Omega fountain. The welcome center experiences views such as Allen Field house, Jayhawk Boulevard, and the Campanile which all showcase the past, present, and future of the university. The building will be used by students, faculty, and families, and other guests.

There are 3 main parts of this project. The 3 large buildings are exhibit spaces that showcase the past, present, and future of the university.

The next layer is the main level small spaces including the foyer, coffee shop, and walk paths.

The lowest level is the courtyard that includes a small garden space, a conference room, an office space, and storage areas.

03|LAWRENCE FIRE STATION

Lawrence is in need of a new fire station that is convenient to fit the needs of firefighters, staff, and visitors. The purpose of this project is to create a space that is comfortable enough to create a sense of home, while still incorporating efficiency, practicality, and convenience. These ideas are accomplished with the analysis of surrounding areas, climate patterns, spatial organization, materiality, and precedents

DESIGN CONCEPT

The main focus of my project is circulation, ensuring quick access to the firetruck bays in emergencies. I experimented with mass modeling to improve flow. The first model, a single-story building, had long distances between sides. The second was efficient but required crossing through the bays, increasing collision risk. The third, a two-story design with slides, was the safest and most efficient, minimizing crossovers and improving flow.

Group Partners: Sally Schaeffler, Sophia Beckman, Betsy Spell, Jordan Greenlief, Grace Strecker, and Meredith Horst

In the KU architecture program, we focus on sustainability and material life cycles. For Parking Day, we re purposed light covers from recent renovations at Marvin Hall, using them in a greenhouse-inspired design to filter natural light. Our project blends Downtown Lawrence’s urban atmosphere with nature to promote recycling and sustainability. Afterward, the container will be reused, and the materials (wood, PVC, light panels) will be recycled or re purposed, while the plants will be planted.

THE PROCESS

04|UNIVERSITY CHAPEL

For this project, we were tasked with creating a non-denominational chapel on the west side of the University of Kansas campus to address the lack of flexible communal spaces. The chapel’s primary use would be for KU organizations and community gatherings.

My two main goals were:

- Design a building that benefits the environment and supports the surrounding ecosystem.

- Ensure easy circulation both inside and outside the building.

CONCEPTUAL MODEL MAKING

First, I created a conceptual model that priorities biomimicry within design.

In the third phase, I kept my ideas of biomimicry and structure, but I then started to think about an effective way of circulation.

The next model based off of structure. At this point I also decided that I wanted to include a central courtyard to add to the environmental aspect.

My last concept model is the closest replica of my final model. I tried to create a concept that combined all 3 important topics. The slanted and curve of the roof allow for a self sustaining garden due to rainwater collection.

05|RENDERING EXERCISE

This prompt of this project is to replicate a work by a famous architect of choice. I chose Mies Van Der Rohe’s Lake Shore Drive apartments in downtown Chicago, Illinois. With this project I had lots of practice with Revit, Photoshop, Enscape, and AI rendering.

06| PERSONAL ACTIVITIES

LEADERSHIP

01|American Institute of Architecture Students

I became a member of AIAS because I wanted to be part of a community that fosters growth, collaboration, and leadership within the architecture field. Throughout my time. I served as First Year Representative, Third year Representative, and Director of Freedom by Design which focused on service within the community.

02| Alpha Sigma Kappa Women In Technical Studies

ASK is an academic sorority for women in STEM. The purpose is to promote friendship, academic achievement, unity within the organization, and philanthropy throughout the community. I served as Historian, or social media chair.

03|Mentorship Collaborative Program

In this program I was assigned as a Mentor for two freshman classes. I would go into their class every week and help out with their studio and schoolwork.

04| National Organization Of Minority Architecture Students

I became a member of NOMAS because I wanted to be a part of an organization that supports diversity inclusiveness.

COOKING

Starting in my early teen years my mother had started teaching me how to cook. It was a bonding experience that we had and we would do it together daily. During high school especially I started to research and study recipes from different cultures and started to make them. Cooking is a lot like architecture because these recipes are developed through trial and error. I now cook as a hobby and love to express my creativity through food.
