Annual Report

SPECIAL THANKS

Thank You to ABL. The Bialik College Foundation would like to acknowledge the legal support provided by Arnold Bloch Leibler (ABL). Under the guidance of ABL partner, Joey Borensztajn AM, the ABL team has been providing pro bono legal advice to the Foundation since its inception in 2014.

Thank You to Jack Jolson. We are so proud to feature the work of student Jack J (Year 9) on our front cover. This image is reflective of our strong Jewish heritage and embraces the values of our school.

Thank You to Bialik’s Communications Department. Your support in developing the 2024 Annual Report has been deeply appreciated.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land on which we learn. We thank Elders past, present and emerging for guarding Country and for reminding us of the importance to tread lightly.

We also acknowledge the Elders of the Bialik community who, in 1942 – a time of tragedy and horror for the Jewish people and for so many others around the world – visioned and developed Bialik College as a new type of schooling for the youngest members of our community.

About Bialik College Foundation

The Bialik College Foundation was established in 2014 with a vision to ensure that every child, regardless of financial circumstances, has access to an exceptional Bialik Jewish education.

Built on the values of community, generosity and excellence, the Foundation is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our families, alumni and supporters who believe in the power of education to shape future generations.

By supporting the Bialik College Foundation, you become part of a community that has the collective power to inspire excellence and improve access to Jewish education.

School fees and government grants cover a majority of the day-to-day running of the College, but it is through the generosity of our donors that we can continue to enhance our programs, upgrade our facilities, and provide scholarships and financial assistance to families in need.

The Foundation plays a pivotal role in enabling Bialik College to deliver a worldclass Jewish education—one that nurtures curiosity, leadership, and a lifelong connection to community and heritage.

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful impact on the lives of our students today and for generations to come.

Together, we can build a stronger future for Bialik. All past and future donations (including voluntary contributions) will contribute to your Bialik Foundation member status. Enquire today about which status you currently are and explore opportunities you can support to develop further your member status.

All donations of $2 or more are taxdeductible.

Message from the Principal

Ever since the time of the prophet Isaiah, when the Jews were specifically instructed to be םויגל רוא Or L’Goyim, a light unto the nations, the Jewish mission has been not just to look at self, but to look outwards and make a positive impact on the wider community. We even have a special phrase for it, םלוע ןוקית tikkun olam, which means repairing our world.

At Bialik, like all schools in Australia, we begin our gatherings with a Welcome to Country, a statement of support for Indigenous Australians and the challenges they have and do face. Uniquely at Bialik, however, we have a second part of our Welcome to Country that recognises Jewish elders too, and their impact on our community.

We add in the following: We also acknowledge the Elders of the Bialik community who, in 1942 – a time of tragedy and horror for the Jewish people and for so many others around the world – visioned and developed Bialik College as a new type of schooling for the youngest members of our community.

It is so inspiring to reflect that during that catastrophic time in the 1940s (after all, האוש Shoah means ‘catastrophe’) Bialik’s elders had the foresight and fortitude to focus on our community’s future – a beautiful statement of both strength and optimism.

The last 18 months have been a terrible time for Jews in Israel and around the world. Yet if ever there was a school and community that stood up for decency, kindness, self determination and safety for the Jewish people and steadfastness against hatred, discrimination and division, it is the Bialik family. A proud Zionist school, we fly our flags – our Australian and our Israeli flags – with such pride. Indeed, if Australian postcodes used letters instead of numbers, ours would certainly begin with a Z.

I am so proud that today, whatever is going on in the streets, in our CBD, within and outside our parliaments, on the walls of childcare centres or in the burnt out cars in Sydney, in the torched synagogue or in normally calm laneways with Jewish inhabitants – whatever is going on, our children walk into the gates of their school – our school and they see the Australian and Israeli flags flying side by side, they celebrate their identity, they wear the symbols of their community, they utter prayers that are many many times older than the Federation of Australia, and their shoulders can come down, they can breath calmly, and they can be proud Australian Jews.

How have we done this? דחיב B’Yachad (Together).

We have supported each other, held each other, challenged each other and cared for each other. B’Yachad.

Thank you to everyone who is mentioned in the pages of this Annual Report. You have inspired us all to continue to reach out and reach in during these challenging times, and thanks to you the College has grown from strength to strength.

Jeremy Stowe-Lindner COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Message from the President

On behalf of the College Council I thank you for your support of the College and the Foundation in 2024 and, for those of you I haven’t met, I look forward to meeting you at a future Foundation function.

I’m a parent at the College and have been President of the College Council since December 2022. I became involved in governance at Bialik because I was so impressed with the education my children are obtaining, and because I am passionate about sharing that opportunity with as many other families as possible.

We’ve been fortunate, over many years, to have a strong Council which has made decisions that see the College in the healthy position we presently find ourselves. All of my predecessors deserve immense credit, but for present purposes I’ll single out one. Jeffrey Mahemoff AO became President of the College in the mid-1980s, as part of a group who saved us from an unfavourable merger. Under his leadership a great deal was achieved; to name just a few things, Genia Janover was appointed and became an extraordinarily successful Principal, the College commenced offering the VCE and substantial building works were undertaken. Not only did Jeffrey provide incredible service to the College while President until 1999, he continues to serve today. Jeffrey attends each Council meeting in his capacity as a Life Governor of the College and dispenses wisdom with great tact. He also continues to serve as a Director of Foundation. The College is, and I am, very fortunate to have Jeffrey’s ongoing involvement.

Bialik College presently finds itself in a strong position. In addition to our educational achievements (such as ongoing excellence in VCE outcomes and the continuing success of our Cultures of Thinking collaboration with Harvard), the Launch Lab has been completed and our students are enjoying the benefits of its amazing facilities. The kitchen garden is looking great. Our sports centre remains a fantastic facility, and our joint venture with Maccabi – Maccabi Aquatics – goes from strength to strength. We have provided significant support to our community in the difficult period since October 7.

Affordability is a challenge we take seriously. Bialik has for many years provided fee assistance to many families, but we know that those in the ‘middle band’ also feel the strain. I want our entire community to know that the Bialik College Council is actively exploring bold, sustainable solutions aimed at ensuring a Bialik education remains within reach. To make a real impact on affordability will require a community effort. Together, we can make a difference. We will have more to say on affordability in the coming years, and on the role our Foundation members can play.

Message from the Foundation Chair

As I reflect on another year as Chair of the Bialik College Foundation, I am continually inspired by the strength and generosity of our community.

The Foundation exists to ensure every Jewish family has access to Bialik’s exceptional programs and facilities. I’m proud not only of the worldclass education we support but of the role we play in making Bialik accessible to as many families as possible. Our culture of giving—through donations, volunteering, or simply showing up for one another—is what sets our school apart and continues to shape its future.

Over the past year, our Foundation has grown significantly. We welcomed Gemma Goldfinger and Naomi Swart to the team, saw the return of Frances D’Oyley Carter from maternity leave, and were joined by new committee members Tanya Cherny and Jess Bram. We also thank Wayne Lasky for his years of valued service and support.

We’ve deepened our engagement with alumni and the broader community, welcoming back past students who are now giving their time or returning as parents themselves. Their pride in the school speaks volumes about the lasting impact of a Bialik education.

As enrolments reach their highest in over a decade, we recognise the collective effort of students, families, educators, and leaders in creating a welcoming and values-driven environment.

Looking ahead, the College Council is undertaking important strategic planning to ensure Bialik remains accessible and sustainable into the future. The Foundation will play a central role in this vision, continuing to foster a community where generosity, belonging, and excellence go hand in hand.

To all who support us—through giving, volunteering, mentoring, or simply believing in our mission—thank you. Together, we are building a legacy that future generations will be proud to inherit.

Michael

Message from the Foundation Manager

Since stepping into this role in July 2024, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the power of community and philanthropy at Bialik College. I am fortunate to be working with a dedicated team with Gemma and Frances who see the value and importance of ensuring a Bialik Jewish Education is accessible for generations to come.

We have welcomed our Foundation members Inside the Tent to hear where we are heading from Principal Jeremy and furthermore, we heard from two educators who shared their stories of the welcoming environment they received at Bialik.

Being part of the announcement of the 2025 Josh Frydenberg Scholarship recipients has also been a highlight. The mentorship and leadership opportunities these students receive are exceptional, and it’s a privilege to be part of this growing scholarship.

I’ve spent time across the school, meeting with staff from all departments, working to understand priorities and design proposals that align with the passions and interests of our donor community. Through these conversations, we’re developing initiatives and strengthening connections that will have a long-lasting impact.

The Foundation plays a vital role in supporting Bialik’s mission—funding programs, scholarships, and facilities that make our college a leader in Jewish education. Through the generosity and foresight of our members, supporters and community we’re able to uphold and expand this mission in powerful ways. I look forward to the future of the Foundation and the opportunities we’ll continue to unlock.

A Legacy Captured

HONOURING MINNIE & SAM SMORGON Z”L

It was a true honour to welcome four generations of the Smorgon family to the college. Their presence, generosity and vision have helped shape the very heart of Bialik College.

The impact Sam and Minnie had on the school was immeasurable. By gifting the music scholarship, investing in capital campaigns and programs, generations of students have had the opportunity to grow into proud and confident Jewish leaders with a strong sense of belonging.

The filming of the Smorgon Legacy Project was more than capturing stories. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect, express deep gratitude, and honour a remarkable family whose commitment to Jewish education has shaped our past and present and will continue to inspire future generations.

To witness the great-grandchildren walking the halls of Bialik, learning in the same classrooms and playing alongside their cousins, was a powerful reminder of the sense of belonging and enduring culture that our school embodies.

On behalf of the Foundation, thank you for trusting us to bring to life the strength of a legacy, a chance to celebrate Minnie and remember Sam.

Foundation Events

NEVER AGAIN: THE FIGHT AGAINST ANTISEMITISM

The Bialik Foundation proudly hosted a special screening of Never Again: The Fight Against Antisemitism, a powerful Sky News documentary presented by former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. The film offered a compelling and deeply personal account of the alarming rise in antisemitism both in Australia and around the world, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance, education, and collective action.

Following the screening, an engaging and insightful Q&A was led by Michelle Jablko, a parent of Bialik College, past member of the College Council and Finance Committee, CEO of Transurban and a highly respected advocate for the Jewish community. Michelle brought a unique perspective to the conversation, not only as a prominent business

leader, but as someone deeply committed to the values of inclusion, education, and social responsibility. Her thoughtful discussion with Josh explored the inspiration behind the documentary, the current landscape of antisemitism, and the role of leadership in confronting hate and driving positive change.

The event sparked meaningful dialogue within our community and served as a powerful reminder to look within and continue to support Jewish education in the diaspora, which in turn helps foster knowledge, resilience, and pride in Jewish identity. We extend our sincere thanks to both Josh and Michelle for their leadership, candour, and unwavering dedication to this critical cause.

Are you interested in exploring ways to be involved in supporting a Bialik Jewish Education?

The Foundation Team would love to have the conversation with you.

INSIDE THE TENT

In late 2024, Foundation launched Inside the Tent, an intimate gathering designed to bring donors into the heart of Bialik. Led by Naomi Swart and supported by our Principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner, this event offered a rare opportunity to go beyond the gates and experience the essence of our school.

Our guests heard first-hand reflections from educators, gained insights into Bialik’s unique Culture of Thinking, shifting Bialik demographics, and the deeply respectful, confidential approach we take to fee assistance. These discussions revealed what it truly means to belong at Bialik, not only as a student or educator, but as a supporter of our shared mission and values.

GRANDPARENTS CIRCLE

At Bialik, our grandparents are a vital thread in the fabric of our school, they are caretakers of memory, transmitters of values, and unwavering supporters of their grandchildren’s growth. Their involvement creates a powerful sense of connection, belonging, and continuity.

This year, we were deeply moved by a reflection from Yvonne and Leigh Goldbloom, Bialik grandparents and former parents. They have been dedicated advocates for the College for nearly 50 years. In this piece they reflect on their enduring connection to Bialik and the powerful legacy of family, education, and community.

In their reflections, they wrote:

“Even as the school grew, it never lost its heart. What truly mattered wasn’t the bricks and mortar—it was the care, the nurturing, and the deep sense of belonging we felt from day one.”

They described the pride they feel watching their grandchildren experience Bialik, walking the same path their children once did and their own parents before that when they picked up from school. “That’s four generations of connection—not bad for post-war immigrants who came with nothing.”

Yvonne and Leigh also reminded us of the critical role Jewish schools like Bialik play in shaping future generations:

“Bialik gives our young people something invaluable, the strength and pride to face the world with confidence... to be future Jewish leaders, thinkers, and educators.”

To help grow and honour this connection, we invite grandparents to join our Bialik Grandparents’ Circle, a warm and welcoming group that stays connected through events, updates, and opportunities to support meaningful initiatives across the school.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all grandparents who are part of the Bialik journey, past, present, and future. You are an enduring source of love, wisdom, and strength. As Yvonne concluded so beautifully:

“As I look back, I do so with gratitude. And as I look forward, I do so with hope that Bialik will continue to grow and be a beacon for future generations.”

Donor Opportunities

Future Opportunities to Support Bialik’s Vision

Bialik College’s commitment to maintaining exceptional facilities, grounds, and programs has positioned the school to confidently pursue future goals that enhance our students’ learning environment. Many of these opportunities are featured in our Annual Report and represent just a glimpse of what’s possible.

Chavayah Program

TOGETHER, LET’S MAKE CHAVAYAH POSSIBLE FOR EVERY STUDENT.

At the end of 2025, Bialik will proudly send both Year 10 and Year 11 students on the Chavayah Program. The Bialik Foundation is honoured to support this immersive educational journey, which brings to life the values and education our students experience every day at Bialik.

This commitment is powerfully captured in our latest campaign film, featuring alumni Lauren Bendel (Class of 2019) and Jesse Wrobel (Class of 2024). Their reflections highlight how the Chavayah experience deepens students’ understanding of Jewish life, identity, and connection, offering them the opportunity to live what they learn in an unforgettable setting in Israel. Beyond its educational impact, Chavayah also strengthens cohort bonds and fosters lifelong friendships.

Central to the program’s success is Bialik’s unwavering commitment to equity. We believe every student should have access to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, regardless of their family’s financial situation. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, no student is left behind.

We are especially grateful to The Pratt Foundation and The Spotlight Foundation, who have each pledged $10,000 annually for the next 10 years to help make this vision a reality.

In 2025, the Foundation aims to raise an additional $20,000 to ensure continued accessibility. If you are interested in becoming a matching donor or supporting this lifechanging initiative, please contact us at foundation@bialik.vic.edu.au.

Together, we can continue to make Chavayah a shared experience for all.

Scholarships at Bialik

Ruben Fried Scholarship

EMPATHY IN ACTION: DAHLIA REFLECTS ON HER FATHER’S ENDURING IMPACT

Scholarships play a pivotal role in shaping the future

of education.

At Bialik scholarships offer talented and high performing students access to a Jewish education and a pathway to achieve their goals. It is with thanks to the generosity of our donors, Bialik can provide assistance in developing a successful future for its students.

We offer a range of scholarships that are currently unnamed and in need of funding.

If you are interested in hearing more about the scholarships, please contact the Foundation Team.

The Spotlight Foundation is thrilled to be supporting the Ruben Fried Scholarship at six of the Jewish day schools in Victoria and Carmel School in Perth. This scholarship is a part of Ruben Fried’s legacy and his strong belief that education has the power to transform lives.

As a young boy, Ruben had to leave his school, Yeshivah College, because his parents could not afford the school fees. The challenges that Ruben faced as a child gave him empathy towards those in difficult financial circumstances and as a result, he believed that all Jewish children should have the opportunity to attend a Jewish day school.

Ruben worked diligently to achieve success and was inspired to help those around him to succeed as well. He was committed to helping others and devoted countless hours mentoring many young people and this dedication continued throughout his entire life.

In honour of his legacy, the Ruben Fried Scholarship Fund offers students the opportunity to access a Jewish education in a Jewish secondary school from Years 7-12 at Bialik College, Leibler Yavneh College, Mount Scopus Memorial College, Yeshivah - Beth Rivkah College and The King David School. In 2019, given the small Jewish community in Perth and its limited donor base, the Carmel School was welcomed into the program.

The aim of the scholarship is to enable young people to enter the world as proud, strong, independent Jews prepared to make significant contributions to their community. Since its inception in 2012, the Spotlight Foundation has supported approximately 59 students through their educational journey. Ruben’s legacy lives on through these recipients.

Ruben Fried Z”L, 1945-2009

Josh Frydenberg Scholarship

ENCOURAGING EXCELLENCE AND LEADERSHIP

Bialik College continues its commitment to fostering leadership and academic excellence with the Josh Frydenberg Scholarship, a wellrespected award that supports students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in leadership, school participation, and personal achievement.

This means tested scholarship is named in honour of Josh Frydenberg, a distinguished Bialik College alumnus and former Treasurer of Australia, whose career and values serve as an inspiration to the school community.

Through this scholarship, students receive not only financial assistance but also the opportunity to be mentored by an admirable leader who has made a significant impact both in Australia and beyond. The Scholars program connects recipients with regular mentoring sessions with Josh, where they can gain valuable insights, build meaningful relationships, and develop the skills necessary to excel in their future schooling and careers.

For Josh, the opportunity to mentor young leaders is deeply personal. As a past student at Bialik College, he was

mentored by Sir Zelman Cowen, the former Governor-General of Australia and an esteemed leader within the Jewish community. The lessons he learned from Sir Zelman including discipline, integrity, and the importance of strong leadership shaped his own journey. Today, Josh is passionate about passing on these values to the next generation, ensuring that young students have the support and guidance needed to become great leaders.

A key philosophy Josh embraces is the saying, “Smooth seas don’t make good sailors.” He believes that true leadership and personal growth come from overcoming challenges, rather than avoiding them. The Josh Frydenberg Scholarship is designed to support students who demonstrate resilience, determination, and a drive to succeed,

not just in academics but in all areas of life. By providing both financial assistance and mentorship, the scholarship helps students navigate obstacles and emerge as stronger leaders.

Selection for the scholarship is based on a combination of leadership potential, active involvement in school and community activities, academic and personal excellence, and financial need. It represents an opportunity for students who not only excel in their studies but also show a commitment to making a difference.

By celebrating achievement, leadership, and resilience, the Josh Frydenberg Scholarship, continues to inspire the next generation of students at Bialik College, equipping them with the tools and guidance to succeed.

Alan Finkel Launch Lab

INNOVATION & LEGACY

This year marked a significant milestone for Bialik College, with the Alan Finkel Launch Lab celebrating its first full year of operation.

As a visionary project, the Launch Lab has served as a unifying initiative within our community, bringing together individuals and families with a shared mission: to establish a state-of-the-art facility that inspires innovation and creativity among students.

This bespoke 3D Periodic Table installation, featuring all 118 elements, is more than a scientific display. Families were invited to connect with it in a meaningful way, choosing elements that reflected their stories: honouring loved ones, marking life’s Simchas, and creating enduring legacies for future generations.

The ‘In Your Element’ campaign brought together new donors, next-gen donors, alumni, and long-standing supporters in a shared mission to foster curiosity, creativity, and discovery for future generations of students. The success of this campaign is a testament to the strength of our Bialik community. Each chosen element tells a story of connection, commitment, and the incredible things we can achieve when we come together.

THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING MEANINGFUL

Every journey begins with a first step, and for the Sherwin family, that step was a meaningful contribution to the Bialik College Foundation.

As they watch their children thrive at Bialik, their commitment to the school’s future has only grown stronger. Their first gift is more than just a donation, it’s an investment in education, growth and the generations to come.

Here’s a snapshot of reasons why they chose to give:

“It was initially the ‘fear of missing out’ that prompted our purchase of the last remaining element. At that point, I knew little about Germanium. Further exploration revealed that Germanium has particularly useful optical characteristics of special relevance in my vocation as an ophthalmologist. Interestingly, Germanium’s unique properties could be harnessed with the potential to lead to improved diagnostic tools and innovative therapies that can drive better patient outcomes.

We are proud to support the Bialik College Foundation and deeply value the school’s commitment to nurturing both academic and personal growth. Watching our children embark on their Bialik journey, we look forward to the many opportunities the school offers them both now and, in the years, to come.

By contributing to the Foundation, we hope to inspire others to join us in supporting this incredible institution, ensuring that future generations continue to benefit.

Just as the periodic table symbolises growth and discovery, Bialik’s educational path encourages exploration and learning at every stage. We are honoured to help sustain Bialik’s legacy of excellence and are grateful for the chance to contribute to its future success.”

Bettie Kornhauser Science Week A

DECADE OF GENEROSITY

Bialik’s Science Week is a dynamic and immersive program that brings the wonder of science to life for students across all year levels. From hands on experiments to interactive displays and inspiring guest speakers, this initiative fosters curiosity, creativity and a passion for STEM.

With dedicated funding, Science Week continues to evolve, offering new and exciting opportunities each year. Students engage with scientific challenges, explore emerging technologies and develop critical thinking skills that extend beyond the classroom. The program provides our teachers with the resources needed to plan innovative activities, ensuring that science education remains engaging, relevant and impactful.

This initiative exemplifies the power of sustained support in enriching the learning experience. By making high quality scientific exploration accessible to all students, Science Week nurtures the next generation of problem solvers, innovators, and leaders in STEM.

Thank you to Larry Kornhauser and his family for supporting this program since 2015 in honour of his mother Bettie Kornhauser Z”L who was deeply passionate about education.

Wellbeing at Bialik

BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY

At Bialik College, prioritising the wellbeing of our entire community is central to everything we do.

The dedicated Child Safety and Wellbeing Team, alongside the psychologists and counsellors, provides ongoing support, education, and training for staff, students, and volunteers. Through proactive initiatives, we work to ensure that every member of our community is equipped with the knowledge and skills to create a safe, nurturing environment where students feel heard, valued, and empowered.

With the growing prevalence of mental health challenges among young people, we are passionate about ensuring a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to student wellbeing. Our curriculum is designed to integrate wellbeing principles into everyday learning, enabling educators to address issues proactively and respond with timely, compassionate support. This holistic model ensures that students not only receive academic guidance but also the emotional and social support they need to thrive.

This year, thanks to the generous contribution of an anonymous donor, we have been able to expand the counselling team, enhancing its capacity to provide mental health clinical support for vulnerable students. This vital expansion ensures that those who require additional care receive the professional assistance they need in a safe and confidential setting.

IMPACT STATEMENT

Thanks to the generous contribution that funded an additional counsellor position, our Psychology and Counselling Service has been able to expand its support for students. In line with the donor’s intention to enhance individual support, this increased capacity has enabled the school to:

• Provide individual counselling and targeted interventions to a greater number of students in need. With the Bialik student population increasing by 12% in 2025, service demand has risen accordingly, reflected in a 14% increase in the service’s overall caseload.

• Prioritise timely intervention for students identified as being at moderate to high risk.

• High-risk students now comprise 17% of the total caseload. Timely intervention has led to the stabilisation of many students and, in several cases, significant improvements in wellbeing and school engagement.

• Assist a number of students in progressing to lower mental health severity ranges via a combination of proactive and reactive individual work with the students and parents/guardians, as well as liaison with additional relevant stakeholders.

This individualised support has played a vital role in reducing crisis episodes, building resilience, and enhancing students’ capacity to engage in their education and personal development. The positive outcomes have extended to students’ families, peers, and educators.

We are deeply grateful for this impactful partnership, which continues to strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of our young people.

Maccabi Aquatics

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS

The partnership between Maccabi Aquatics and Bialik College continues to flourish, bringing together two strong communities with shared values and a deep commitment to excellence. This relationship has not only enhanced opportunities for our swimmers but it has strengthened the bonds between the two organisations together with strengthening the connections across the community.

As we celebrate this connection, we extend our gratitude to Barry Carp, a past Vice President of the College, for his dedication and leadership as Chairman of Maccabi Aquatics as he steps down from this role. His contributions have been invaluable in shaping the club’s success, and we sincerely thank him for his time, effort, and passion.

Cultures of Thinking

SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF THINKING AT BIALIK

In 2025 Bialik College proudly celebrates 20 years of Cultures of Thinking, an educational approach developed in collaboration with Harvard University’s Project Zero.

This initiative, which began in 2005, has transformed teaching and learning, making student thinking visible, valued, and actively promoted. With the generous patronage of Vera and Abe Dorevitch, Bialik pioneered a school-wide culture that developed into a global pedagogical practice leading to published research, international conferences, and implementation by schools, universities, and institutions.

For Bialik students, the impact of this approach extends far beyond the classrooms, cultivating a life-long skillset that supports innovation and invention. It fosters dispositions that promote critical thinking and a growth mindset, essential for success in everyday life. For classrooms to be cultures of thinking for students, schools must also be cultures of thinking for educators. Bialik prioritises ongoing professional learning, including mentorship programs, workshops, and participation in Harvard’s prestigious Project Zero Classroom Summer Institute, honouring our commitment to create a culture of thinking across the college and be at the forefront of educational research. Our current research collaborations with Harvard explore how learning environments shape student development, while new projects like The REACH Project and Transformative Repair seek to deepen our understanding of mindsets, resilience, and creativity.

The impact of this work is immeasurable and its success depends on community support. By contributing to the future of this approach to education it will ensure Bialik College remains a global leader in educational research and best practice. Your generosity empowers students, supports educators, and drives innovation that influences learning worldwide.

The Kutner Family Shuk

NOURISHING OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY

The Kutner Family Shuk has long been more than just a canteen—it is the heart of our school community. Since opening its roller doors in 2010, this vibrant hub has transformed everyday eating into a delightful culinary adventure, offering fresh, colourful, and healthy food that nourishes both body and soul. With its inviting aromas, the Shuk has become renowned for its warm atmosphere and its role in forging connections among students, staff, and families.

At the core of this remarkable journey is the Kutner family, a family whose values of generosity, innovation, and community spirit have driven every initiative. Their passion for healthy, soulful food and a nurturing environment shine through in every detail, from the seasonal menus crafted by Suzy and Deb to the cherished weekly tradition of freshly baked challah that caps off each week with a delicious note.

This legacy of giving extends far beyond the Shuk itself. The Kutner family’s influence is woven throughout our school, with grandchildren in various years at the college. From academic initiatives and student welfare to extracurricular programs. Their engagement is a testament to the enduring family values that have been passed down through generations, continuously enriching our community and inspiring future leaders.

In times of challenge, such as during the COVID pandemic, the Kutner Family Shuk served as a beacon of support. Its ability to adapt, providing families with school meal options and catering for important events, illustrates the resilience and forward-thinking spirit that defines the Kutners. This same spirit has guided the recent redevelopment of the Shuk, ensuring that as our enrolments grow and our needs evolve, the space remains a vibrant and welcoming center.

The newly reimagined Shuk, reopened in February, is a tribute not only to the Kutners’ generous support but also to their lifelong commitment to Bialik College. Reflecting on fond memories of the old Bialik tuck shop and the joy of sharing a famous zucchini slice or cookies, the family has reinvested in a space that stands as a living legacy of warmth, community, and culinary delight.

The Bialik Foundation extends its heartfelt thanks to the Kutner family. Their unwavering dedication and vision have created a legacy that enriches every corner of our school, ensuring that the spirit of community and the passion for healthy, soulful living will continue to flourish for generations to come.

Bnei Mitzvah

CELEBRATE. CONNECT. GIVE BACK.

A Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah is a special milestone and a time not only for celebration, but also an opportunity to embrace the Jewish value of tzedakah (charity) and give back to the community.

The Bialik College Foundation encourages students and families to consider giving back to Bialik College for their Bnei Mitzvah journey. Projects can be tailored to reflect families values and interests.

At Bialik, we are privileged to witness the generosity and commitment of our community in many ways.

The Bialik Foundation had the opportunity to sit down with Charlie Beaconsfield (Class of 2019), who made a remarkable choice for her Bat Mitzvah in 2013 — she asked for gifts in lieu of presents to support the Bialik College Foundation, Scholarship Fund. Charlie’s story is a testament to the values we instil in our students: the power of tzedakah (charity), the importance of giving back, and the role each of us play in securing Bialik’s future for generations to come.

REFLECTIONS ON HOLOCAUST EDUCATION: MATT SORTINO HISTORY EDUCATOR

SHARES HIS JOURNEY WITH THE GANDEL FOUNDATION PROGRAM.

Reflecting on your time as an educator at Bialik, how has your understanding of Jewish identity and culture evolved?

My time at Bialik has profoundly deepened my understanding of Jewish identity and culture. Initially drawn by the school’s reputation and my interest in Jewish life, I’ve come to appreciate the richness and diversity of pluralist Judaism. Since October 7, this connection has only intensified, prompting me to learn more about Zionism, Israel, Jewish history, and thought. I feel honoured to be part of a community built on trust, respect, and a shared commitment to learning and belonging.

What initially motivated you to pursue the Gandel Holocaust Studies Program, and how did it align with your goals as an educator?

When the Gandel Holocaust Studies Program was offered to Jewish schools for the first time, I was immediately interested—having heard wonderful things about it from a colleague. Nicole Brittain from Gandel Foundation encouraged me to take part, and I’m so glad I did. As a history teacher in a Jewish school, it was an invaluable opportunity to deepen my content knowledge and refine my pedagogical approach. The experience was both inspiring and grounding, especially post-October 7, reaffirming my commitment to Holocaust education and the broader Jewish story.

How has being part of a Jewish school community like Bialik influenced your approach to teaching and leadership?

Being part of the Bialik Community has had a big impact on how I educate and lead. There is a real sense of connection among students and staff which create a strong sense of belonging and purpose. At Bialik critical thinking is encouraged within a framework of identity and tradition, allowing both students and educators to grow with confidence and integrity. I feel empowered and supported and trusted to take ownership of my role and contribute meaningfully to the school’s vision. of the leadership team around me, as well as clear messaging and trust. I feel I am not just middle management but a key cog with ownership of what I provide and focus on. A caring student and parent body also makes you keep on your toes and make sure you do everything right which is a good thing.

Can you share some of the most profound moments or insights you gained during the program? How did hearing from Holocaust survivors and engaging with leading historians shape your perspective on Holocaust education? In what ways did your experiences deepen your appreciation of Jewish resilience, memory, and identity?

The program deeply challenged and enriched my understanding of Holocaust education. It highlighted the complexity of how we remember and who holds responsibility to share the stories. Yad Vashem’s approach of “safely in, safely out” reinforced the importance of centring individuals never losing sight of the stories. Hearing from survivors and leading historians was proudly moving, reminding me that Holocaust education is not only about remembrance but about bearing witness with truth and evidence to ensure we never become bystanders whilst it has also strengthened my appreciation for Jewish resilience, identity and memory.

Educational Project and Legacy. Tell us about the educational project you are developing through the Gandel Program. What are its goals, and how will it contribute to the Bialik community? What kind of impact do you hope this project will have on current and future students at Bialik? How do you see your work contributing to the culture of remembrance and responsibility that Bialik fosters?

Rather than creating a new lesson, I’m developing a podcast titled Their Stories Unbroken, an oral history project that captures the voices of Holocaust survivors and their descendants connected to the Bialik community. Through long-form conversations, the podcast explores the impact of the Shoah on Jewish Australian lives, highlighting resilience, legacy, and memory across generations. It will serve as a lasting educational resource and contribute meaningfully to Bialik’s culture of remembrance and responsibility, engaging both students and families in preserving and honouring these powerful stories.

Looking Forward: As you continue through the follow-up stages of the Gandel Program, what are you most excited to bring back to Bialik? How do you plan to keep engaging with Holocaust education and contribute to the growing network of trained educators across Australia? Finally, how do you hope your journey will inspire other staff and students to engage more deeply with Jewish history, values, and the power of memory?

As part of the follow-up to the Gandel Program, I’m excited to bring a more interactive approach to Holocaust education at Bialik particularly through a professional learning workshop based on The Story of the St. Louis, which explores survivor narratives through multiple perspectives. This session, part of our Yom Ha’Shoah staff development, will help teachers engage more deeply with primary sources and human stories. I also look forward to sharing Their Stories Unbroken, my new podcast project, and continuing to build connections with fellow educators across Australia. My hope is to inspire other educators and students alike to engage more meaningfully with Jewish history, values, and the enduring power of memory.

A VCE Legacy

The Year 12 Legacy Project at Bialik College is about creating a lasting tribute to the journey each graduating class has taken together, a testament to the strong sense of belonging within the Bialik kehilla. From their first steps through the Tooronga Road entrance to their final farewell through the Auburn Road gates, each student’s experience weaves a narrative of memories and moments shared with classmates and staff.

Each year, VCE students and their families participate in the Legacy Project by coming together to raise funds, not for themselves, but to contribute towards an area of the school in need of upgrading. Whether it’s a learning space, communal area, or piece of equipment, the chosen project becomes the legacy of that graduating class. This is a way of leaving the school better than they found it. While the graduating class do not directly benefit from the improvements, they take pride in knowing their contribution has a lasting impact on future generations of Bialik students.

Rhonda, a Year 12 parent in 2024, reflects: “The Class of 2024 has embraced this opportunity with pride, knowing their contributions will serve as both a gift and inspiration to future Bialik students. It’s a lasting reminder that our time here mattered—not just for us, but for those who follow in our footsteps.”

Isabel, who began her parent journey at Bialik in 2003, echoes this sentiment, noting how Bialik has been more than just a school for her family; it has been a home, a place where her children formed lifelong friendships and memories through some memorable experiences like Chavayah, Year 12 formal and the Purim dance. It is a place where incredible friendships have formed.

This initiative fosters a culture of giving, encouraging students to leave Bialik even better than they found it. It strengthens their lifelong connection to the school, creating a legacy they can revisit, whether during reunions or when they return with their own children to walk the halls once more.

Please look out for the new water station that will be located outside the Kutner Family Shuk and will honour the class of 2024.
