I warmly welcome you all this evening.
Ten years ago, my neighbour Spencer was nagging me to do something. Now Spencer is very persistent and does not take no for an answer. He wanted me to visit a rehabilitation centre for injured veterans and victims of terror on my next visit to Israel. To keep good neighbourly relations, I agreed.
So soon after, I found myself interrupting a holiday in Israel and took my family to visit Beit Halochem in Tel Aviv. We knew next to nothing about the charity and were feeling apprehensive. But when we walked into the centre, we were blown away.

My family had anticipated a downbeat and depressing place. How wrong we were. Instead, we were struck by how positive and upbeat the servicemen and women were. They were looking forward with optimism, not backwards with recrimination. It was a place of hope, not sadness.
So I felt an overwhelming desire and responsibility to get involved. This was initially as a donor but one thing led to another and I became Chairman of Beit Halochem UK.
As we reflect on the past 10 years of the charity, we should be immensely proud of the support that has been offered to the 51,000 IDF injured veterans, victims of terror and their families. Beit Halochem is a charity like no other, restoring purpose, self-esteem and dignity to our wounded soldiers and their families, for life. The driving force behind our establishment in the UK was our founding Chairman Denis Levine (BH-UK), who had the vision and determination to make it happen, and he deserves a special mention ten years on.
We obviously like to raise as much money as we can to go directly to Israel for the rehabilitation of our brave veterans and victims of terror. Your generous financial support has allowed us to contribute towards the following projects:
• Education and sporting scholarship programmes which have enabled our members to reach new heights,
• Activities at the Young Members club,
• Capital projects; including the construction of a new hydrotherapy pool in Jerusalem, the completion of the fitness hall in Haifa and the building of the aquatic centre in Tel Aviv.
• The annual running costs of our four rehabilitation facilities.
Our financial support is making life better for thousands of injured veterans and victims of terror. But we are so much more than just a UK fundraising arm of an Israeli charity. We also play a key role in raising awareness of veteran physical and mental health. We take IDF and UK veterans into primary and secondary schools to talk about resilience and overcoming adversity and we have hosted over 2,000 UK students at Beit Halochem centres in Israel during their school trips. These encounters leave a deep impression on young minds. In addition, we have had two groups from the Maccabi Games visit our centres to be inspired by our members.
Perhaps the initiative of which I am most proud was the Veteran Games and Conference in Israel in 2019. This groundbreaking programme took place at our Tel Aviv and Jerusalem centres. We brought together sixty wounded UK military veterans and their families with wounded Israeli veterans for five days of sporting competitions and cultural activities. In addition to this, we hosted the first UK/Israel Conference on physical and mental rehabilitation. We did not know if it would work but our doubts proved to be misplaced.
The programme was deemed so successful that it was repeated three weeks ago in Israel. We are building new bonds and relationships and also giving never-to-be-forgotten experiences to injured veterans. Tonight, I am proud that we have been joined by participants of the Veteran Games programme as well as the heads of many of the leading UK Veteran Organisations.
I hope you’ll agree that we have achieved a significant amount since 2012. However, whilst we have injured soldiers and victims of terror to rehabilitate, our work is never done. One of my favourite sayings in the Siddur is from Rabbi Tarfon: “It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it.”
My special thanks tonight go to our joint dinner Chairs, my wife, Orly, Natalie Tahan and Susie Kahn joint Chairs as well as their wonderful committee. They have each devoted an enormous amount of time and effort to ensure tonight’s success and their ongoing commitment to the cause is truly appreciated.
I would like to thank Spencer Gelding and Karina Shulman, CEO and Operations Manager respectively as well as my fellow Trustees. Their tireless enthusiasm to do more for Beit Halochem has helped transform the lives of many wounded IDF veterans.
Most of all, I thank you, our generous friends. Without you, the lives of the young men and women injured whilst protecting Israel would simply not be the same. There are many reasons to be proud of Israel and, for me, Beit Halochem is yet another.
I hope you have an inspiring evening.
Best wishes,

Orly Wolfson, Natalie Tahan, Susie Kahn

A warm welcome and thank you for joining us tonight for the 10th Anniversary Beit Halochem Dinner. Beit Halochem is a special organisation, an organisation that we are particularly proud to support and be associated with.
How a society treats its most vulnerable is always the measure of its humanity.
Israel can be rightly proud of the way in which those who have risked their lives to support the State of Israel are supported when they are wounded, traumatised or experience life changing injuries in their commitment to keep the land of Israel and its citizens safe.
For any one of the 51,000 members of Beit Halochem this is a place to learn how to live again, a place to be safe and supported and to build strength in the new life ahead of these veterans or victims of terror. To learn how to find joy in life.
Anyone who has been close to someone who has been suffering physically or psychologically will know that there is a ripple effect. That those close to the injured suffer themselves, that they also need to process what has happened and to learn to live with the physical and mental impact of their loved ones experience. A place where children are involved and can be alongside other families who have had similar experiences. Beit Halochem is such a place.
We hope that this evening gives you a real sense of the important work of BH and we encourage you to visit yourself, with your families, to see first-hand the uplifting and inspiring work of this organisation.
Thank you again for being here.
Orly Wolfson, Natalie Tahan, Susie Kahn

Message from Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis on the occasion of Beit Halochem’s 10th anniversary
I am delighted to extend my heartfelt blessings for success to Beit Halochem, one of Israel’s most crucial and inspirational charities, on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.
The Hebrew word ‘lochem’, from which Beit Halochem derives its name, means ‘warrior’ and it has the same root as the word ‘lechem’ meaning ‘bread’. What is the connection between the two?
When we make a blessing over bread, we thank God, ‘who brings forth bread from the earth’. Yet, God Himself does not provide the bread. He provides the grain from which people are able to make bread. The blessing teaches us the powerful lesson that nothing comes to us without toil and exertion. If we take responsibility f or investing the effort into growing the crops, processing them into ingredients and then taking the time to mix and bake them, only then will we be rewarded with the staple food for our physical sustenance. So, too, with a warrior. No person is born a soldier. They need countless hours of training, learning and honing their skills to be able to protect us. If we take our responsibility to invest in our defence forces seriously, then we can benefit from safety and security.
Beit Halochem exists because it understands that an essential part of that responsibility is the care we provide to soldiers when they can no longer serve as our ‘warriors’. The commitment that we show to the wellbeing of those who put their lives on the line for the protection of the Jewish State, is absolutely essential for Israel’s future.
I am immensely proud of the role that British Jewry takes, through Beit Halochem, in sharing this important responsibility and I thank you all of you who are outstanding partners in this sacred endeavour.
May all of your continued efforts be blessed,

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis June 2022 • Sivan 5782

THE HISTORY BEIT HALOCHEM UK
In 1949, following Israel’s War of Independence, the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation (ZDVO) was established to provide care and support for the 6,000 wounded veterans of the Israel Defence Forces.
The main objectives of the ZDVO are to improve the quality of life of wounded veterans, to safeguard their legal rights and to promote their interests through legislation or economic and social measures. In 1974, the first Beit Halochem rehabilitation centre was established in Tel Aviv to care for the complex physical and emotional
needs of wounded IDF veterans. Sadly, new members join the organisation every day, having been wounded during active service or while defending the country against acts of terror.
With the horrific toll from the rise of terrorism, the organisation has expanded its membership to allow victims of terror to use its unique facilities. Unfortunately, in Israel’s relatively short history, the organisation has continued to expand; today it numbers over 51,000 members.
BEIT HALOCHEM UK is a UK registered charity devoted to raising awareness and funds for the Beit Halochem rehabilitation centres in Israel. The State of Israel, with its many challenges and limited resources, cannot cope alone with providing for all the needs of the wounded veterans and, as their numbers grow, the funding needs of the four Beit Halochem centres also increase.
programmes, develop new initiatives and purchase much needed equipment for the centres.
I found, in my basketball team, the closest thing to a squad of combatants. I am now part of a team of fighters on the court of life. Beit Halochem has made that possible.
I don’t have a classic support group where I sit and share my pain. But on the basketball court, the one thing that brings us together, is not what happened to us, but as true warriors would say, how can we win together?
“

Beit Halochem relies heavily on its affiliated organisations, including Beit Halochem UK, to help it carry the burden of giving its members as normal life as possible. Funding from supporters around the world enables Beit Halochem to continue on-going
Today we are celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the establishment of Beit Halochem UK. We are proud that the charity has helped support over 51,000 IDF injured veterans, victims of terror and their families. Together we have raised more than £20 million. Beit Halochem is grateful for all the support it receives from organisations and individuals across the UK.

If you are visiting Israel this year and would like a personal tour of one of the centres, Beit Halochem UK would be happy to facilitate this.
BEIT HALOCHEM FACILITIES
Beit Halochem, meaning ‘House of Warriors’, was established to provide wounded IDF veterans and victims of terror with a rehabilitative infrastructure where they receive respite and the opportunity to regain the dignity and quality of life they deserve. Today, the 51,000 Beit Halochem members are given a new lease of life at our four rehabilitation centres based in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beer Sheva. They remain members of the organisation for the rest of their lives. With help from donors, a fifth and final rehabilitation centre is being built in Ashdod. This new facility will accommodate 6,700 veterans (together with their families, this amounts to more than 14,500 people).
The Beit Halochem centres provide a blend of exceptional rehabilitative services including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and chiropractic treatments conducted alongside social and specialised sport options, educational programmes and a vast range of creative activities. Each centre offers a wide choice of physical and social activities, housing an auditorium, multipurpose gymnasium, classrooms, fitness rooms, occupational and physical therapy units, trauma therapy units, a cafeteria, offices and a social wing.

THE POWER OF SPORT
For people with a disability, sport encourages positive health and wellbeing as well as social inclusion. Whether as recreation or something more competitive, there is a reason why sports are recommended for both able bodied and disabled individuals: because they help one feel as though they’re a part of something. It’s where many important social skills are learned, including acceptance of the disability, support of comrades, and the value of competition.
Research has revealed that increased participation in sport results in a significantly better quality of life. A large number of veterans who have taken on new adaptive sports at Beit Halochem have gone on to achieve Paralympic success and compete in worldwide Paralympic games including in wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball and swimming.
A SUPPORT NETWORK FOR LIFE
A very important feature at Beit Halochem is the meeting of “generations”, bringing together young and old which teaches veterans to adjust to the difficult and complex world of disability. The Young Members Club also provides activities for the younger members of the organisation including outings and trips abroad. Family members are encouraged to join in the many activities on offer and special attention is given to members’ children including the provision of playrooms, childcare, parties and social events, enabling the entire family to become actively involved in the lengthy process of rehabilitation.

BEIT HALOCHEM CENTRES

Beit Halochem Tel Aviv opened its doors in 1974, after the Yom Kippur War. It was built on seven acres of land allocated to the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation by the late Yehoshua Rabinovitz, then mayor of Tel Aviv. The principal contribution for the centre was provided by the Aktionskomitee “Pro-Israel” of Switzerland. The 10,000-square-metre complex includes a multipurpose gymnasium, classrooms, treatment rooms, rest accommodations, culture
halls, cafeteria, indoor swimming pool, massage and hydrotherapy unit, shooting gallery and a 350-seat auditorium.
The grounds include outdoor playing fields and an Olympic-size swimming pool. About 5,500 veterans, living in the country’s central region, are active members in Tel Aviv. Including their immediate families, the overall number of participating members comes to 16,000

JERUSALEM

HAIFA
The Beit Halochem centre in Haifa opened in 1986. The Brith Sholom Foundation in Philadelphia undertook the major portion of the facility’s funding. Because of its unusual architectural features, it is considered one of Israel’s more interesting buildings.
Situated on the western slopes of the French Carmel, the complex covers about 7,000 square metres. The three-story building houses a
social wing, 180-seat auditorium, multipurpose gymnasium, classrooms, fitness rooms, indoor swimming pool, shooting gallery, cafeteria and offices. Over 2,500 disabled veterans who live in the north make up the active membership, with a total of 8,000 participating members including families.

BEER SHEVA
The Beit Halochem centre in Jerusalem opened in 1994, for the benefit of the members of Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation living in and around the Jerusalem area. The facility grounds encompass some ten acres of beautiful landscaping, in the south-western part of Jerusalem, between the new suburbs of Gilo, Malcha and Givat Masua, with panoramic views of the Judean hills.
The construction of the facility was made possible through the contributions of Friends of Beit Halochem Organisations, from all over the world, and especially, by virtue of the 5.5 million dollar legacy bequeathed by the late Aladar and Iby Fleischman.
The 6,750 sq. metre Jerusalem stone complex boasts a large multipurpose gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool, auditorium, physiotherapy treatment and fitness rooms, classrooms, tennis courts, shooting range, table tennis, billiard hall and spacious parking lots. 3,500 disabled veterans are currently enrolled at the centre. Together with their families, the centre serves some 9,000 members.
Beer Sheva’s Beit Halochem opened its doors on January 2011. With over 1,500 registered members, it serves a community of more than 3,000 members and their families residing in Beer Sheva and the Southern District.
The 5,500 sq. metre facility is built in the city’s eastern section on an area of 4.4 acres allocated to the ZDVO by the Israel Lands Authority. The complex features a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a sports hall, hydrotherapy pool, a physiotherapy wing, fitness hall, table tennis and billiards halls,
a multi-purpose events hall, outdoor basketball and tennis courts and a wide array of sports, cultural and leisure activities for the members and their families.
VETERAN GAMES & CONFERENCE 2022

The second Veteran Games and Conference took place in Israel in May 2022. The second round of Veterans Games brought together 160 injured UK army veterans and family members with a similar number of injured Israeli army veterans for 5 days of sporting competition taking place at the Tel Aviv based Beit Halochem facility, recovery and tourism in Israel. This experience gave the veterans the opportunity to spend time with their families whilst providing them with a unique insight into Israel’s rich culture and history.
Like in 2019, this time the Games also hosted a conference which brought together leading experts from the UK and Israel to discuss mental and physical health among the very severely injured veterans. Discussions explored the positive impact of sport on recovery, treatment and recovery of mental health, led by former head of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Sir Simon Wessely. In addition, the experts showcased research and talked about policy issues of mutual interest.
The bringing together of wounded UK and Israeli military veterans and family members for a combination of sporting competition and social and cultural activities in Israel created an inclusive and collaborative atmosphere that proved to play a significant part in the ongoing recovery of veterans who have suffered physical injury and/or psychological scarring as a consequence of military service.
The opening ceremony welcomed UK Veterans Minister, MP Leo Docherty, who hailed the project as an expression of the “amazingly close” bilateral relations in defence and intelligence sharing.
the Games were funded by Pears Foundation, Wolfson Family Charitable Trust, Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation, Exilarch’s Foundation, Charles Wolfson Charitable trust, Rachel Charitable Trust, Patron Charitable Initiatives Veterans Foundation and The Gerald and Gail Ronson Family Foundation
The Games were supported by leading British military charities and rehabilitation organisations including the Royal Marines Charity, RAF Benevolent Fund, Rock2Recovery, Veterans Scotland, Combat Stress, the Not Forgotten Association, SSAFA, Felix Fund, Blind Veterans UK and the Association of Jewish ex-Service Men and Women (AJEX).

TESTIMONIALS
“In our effort to provide a global gold standard there are definitely insights to be gained from the first-class provision available to veterans in Israel.”
MP Leo Docherty - Minister for Defence People and Veterans
“It’s taken me a while to digest all your kindness. I cannot thank you and everyone involved enough. I have hope again. I have found a new strength. You and the team made this happen. I have found my smile again. Thank you so much.”
Anthony Lock
“It was truly inspiring to meet other veterans and humbling to learn about their experiences. Everyone had different abilities –there were people in wheelchairs, those who were blind or had other disabilities. But there was a real sense of pride in what they were doing, and they all refused to give up.”
Fraser Rowand, Veterans Scotland
“I think that this week has brought people together and allowed that osmosis of knowledge and experience sharing so people know that they aren’t alone.” David Wiseman, Conference participant”
Wiseman, Conference participant
“When I arrived, I was a shell of the person I am now, I just hope I can take it forward. It’s down to the amazing support we’ve received and being part of a community again, like when we served.”
Amanda
Small - SSAFA

“These games, these amazing veterans’ games do just that. They restore the pride we once felt when we wore our military uniforms. That pride we once had, being part of a troop, a detachment, a Corps. They give us the opportunity to create new friendships; they give us understanding of what other veterans in other countries have experienced, and how they have been supported in their rehabilitation. They give us the chance to meet with each other’s families in a safe, friendly space to talk about the challenges we all face and how we can continue to support each other. And they give us wonderful, lifelong memories, from a beautiful country, rich in heritage and history.”
Caroline Beazley, The Not Forgotten Association
“Beit Halochem is a world leader and the UK and Israel teaming up will benefit our veterans immensely. I have returned reinvigorated and ready to continue my own rehab as have many others.”
Steve Richards, The Royal Marines Charity
WORKING WITH YOUTH BEIT HALOCHEM PEOPLE
Mental Health Educational Programme
As part of the BHUK mental health educational programme that the office has been promoting, we have recently taken Christopher Hayes (former royal marines and Veteran Games 2019 participant) to JFS school. Christopher spoke to Year 10 (300 children) about his time in the Marines, his struggles with PTSD and how the VG programme has helped with his rehabilitation. The session was exceptional, and the pupils interacted amazingly, asking numerous questions, and even staying behind after the class to ask more questions. The visit was such a success the Headmaster has asked for us to come back to the school and speak to Years 9,11,12 and 13.
Beit Halochem UK is looking forward to starting again the Mental Health Educational Programme in the coming academic year, bringing it to both jewish and non-jewish schools.
Project Impact
As part of National Mental Health Awareness Week, Christopher Hayes conducted a session in conjunction with Project Impact for a group of teens in year 9-11,

sharing his life story, including how he overcame his battle with his mental health issues and rebuilt his life thanks to BHUK programme called the Veteran Games. The session was very successful, with teenagers interacting and asking questions as well as creating canvases with motivational quotes.
Yom Hazikaron ceremony
Beit Halochem UK hosted Ofir Anidgar, Beit Halochem member and veteran.
Ofir spoke at Immanuel School in front of the entire school as part of the schools Memorial Ceremony. He also addressed multiple year groups at Yavneh College sharing his story and how Beit Halochem has helped him with his rehabilitation.
