Welcome to the 25th Annual TIE Conference! Welcome to the 25th annual TIE Conference. It is a pleasure and a privilege to have you participate in the region’s largest professional development event for educators. I encourage you to engage fully in all the conference has to offer – nationallyrecognized keynote speakers, stimulating breakout sessions, a technology-rich exhibit hall, fabulous prizes and much, much more. TIE 2011 reflects the finest in education/government/business partnerships. Through cooperation and collaboration with schools, professional education organizations, the South Dakota Department of Education and technology vendors, TIE leaders have shaped an event that helps participants discover the potential of sound technology integration for all learners. The result is a conference that features a wealth of relevant technology-related information for today’s schools and communities. The enthusiasm and commitment of TIE 2011 partners is reflected in the breadth and depth of conference activities. TIE Twitters and we invite you to join in the conversation. Technology in Education - What’s Changed, What Hasn’t Rushton Hurley & Ken Shelton

Technology has unleashed a torrent of possibilities for teaching and learning, but our being effective requires us to know the difference between what’s really changed and what hasn’t. If the interpersonal connection between teacher and student is that which enables powerful learning in a classroom, certain questions can shape how we build our lessons. To what degree do students trust that we care about their strengths and weaknesses? Does their opinion of our abilities decide the degree to which they will pay attention? Are we rising above their expectations of predictability for our classes? And finally, can technology help us address these questions productively? Don’t miss the thoughts on these questions from two far-from-boring teachers who refuse to stop learning.

About Rushton Hurley Rushton has been a Japanese language teacher, a principal of an online high school, a teacher trainer, an educational technology researcher, and a school reform consultant who has worked and studied on three continents. He is now director of an educational nonprofit called Next Vista for Learning, which houses a free library of videos by and for teachers and students. Rushton has trained teachers around the country, presenting at national and regional conferences. His fun and thoughtful talks center on the connection between engaging learning and useful, affordable technology, as well as professional perspectives of teachers.

About Ken Shelton Ken holds a M.A. in Education, with a specialization in New Media Design and Production. He has worked as an educator for 8 years and currently teaches technology at the middle school level. He has earned teaching credentials in both Social Studies and Technology Education. As a part of his active involvement within the Educational Technology community, Ken is a Google Certified Teacher, an Apple Distinguished Educator, a Discovery STAR Educator, and serves on the board for the Computer Using Educators Los Angeles affiliate (CUELA).

Meg Ormiston Teachers today need to catch up and keep up with the rapidly changing digital landscape, or risk disengaging an entire generation of students. We need updated methods and strategies to take advantage of the new opportunities that digital tools bring to the classroom. New curriculum delivery methods include using video curriculum, podcasting direct instruction, and harnessing the power of online resources. Change the way you teach to better align to the research about how the students of today learn.

About Meg Ormiston Meg has been involved in professional development activities focused on changing instructional practice in the classroom for over 25 years. She marries her passion for technology with a deep curriculum background and over twelve years as a classroom teacher. Meg has served as a curriculum coach, school board member, keynote speaker, professional development specialist and grant facilitation specialist. She has also authored four books, written numerous articles, collaborated on professional videos and participates in many personal learning communities. The increasing use of Web 2.0 applications and mobile technologies is causing school districts to reconsider their current Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs). Invention & Creative Problem-Solving in the Elementary Classroom: STEM Enrichment Programs from Invent Now, Inc. Room 206 Susan Clarke - Invent Now, Inc. Discover a new approach to STEM education in the elementary classroom that weaves science content into a crosscurriculum theme while meeting curriculum standards. Invention can be used as the springboard to teach required academic content as well as 21st century learning skills. Engaging the child in small-group problem-solving captures his interest in the subject matter while giving him the opportunity to work on other real-life skills such as teamwork, decision-making, and drawing inferences. The create/recreate process encourages risk-taking and learning from failure, while the creative problem-solving process parallels the steps of the scientific method and allows children to actually become scientists by coming up with ideas, testing, evaluating results, revising, and testing again. Participants will receive a brief overview of Camp Invention and Club Invention, elementary outreach programs offered by the non-profit Invent Now, Inc. in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. These STEM enrichment programs are hosted by your school, with local teachers paid to present our curriculum. Everything is provided, including curriculum, materials, staff training and salaries, liability insurance, etc. Participants will try a hands-on activity from our INNOVATE curriculum. After review, the AdvancEd/NCA team identified a need for the West Central School District to improve both the “quality” and “quantity” of technology in the district. In response to this feedback, we took aggressive measures to improve the application of technology to support teaching and learning. Additional amounts have budgeted for the use of technology, including a 1-to-1 initiative at the high school, multiple Promethean boards at all levels, and a large dose of professional development for all staff. Salon D - Holiday Inn Chris Link - Platte County School District #2 As a teacher of Social Studies, the opportunity for integrating technology into project-based units of study was not only feasible, but advantageous for students in my American History class. Through the use of IMovie, IDVD, the internet, visits to local historical sites in our area, and shared excitement by both students and myself, the approach to learning and teaching the era of the Great Depression took on a whole new look. Students were responsible for gathering research, refining their topic, writing scripts, creating movie footage using green screen technology and actual historical clips, and laying down sound tracks. Once the groundwork was completed, the students then created the actual movie using IMovie. The movie was fine-tuned and then burned onto a DVD. Personalized Learning is Becoming a Reality Room 102 Barry Brahier - Infinite Campus Through an Investing in Innovation (i3) grant from the US DOE, Infinite Campus is collaborating with a Georgia school district to make personalized learning into a reality for all students in all schools nationwide. Along with the University of Georgia, the collaborative will deliver and evaluate standards-based personalized learning in district secondary schools beginning August 2011. The five-year project implements an extension of Infinite Campus linking 1) the standardsbased learning activities teachers provide students, 2) student scores on formative assessments and 3) student scores on interim and summative assessments. Ultimately the system will provide recommendations for the next learning activity for each student. Steve Hargadon Significant changes are taking place in our society and culture, largely driven by the participative and collaborative technologies of the Web. These technologies have the potential to dramatically (and quickly) change public expectations of the role of schools in teaching and learning, and we are about to have the largest discussion about education we’ve had in decades, maybe longer. We can predict several changes to education that are likely to come from these changes, and as we examine the core dilemmas that these changes pose to our current educational systems (and that will define our biggest challenges in our next few years), we’ll discuss the things that we can do now to start preparing.

American Experience: Freedom Riders (Segregation) Boardroom Steven Rokusek - South Dakota Public Broadcasting During this session participants will explore the educational resources available with the new American Experience program called Freedom Riders. Freedom Riders is about the 1961 six-month-long bus tour through the deep South to challenge segregation. Both blacks and whites, mainly college-aged people, were on the bus tour. They were often met with violence and protesting groups and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face-to-face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation. This session will demonstrate one district’s process to streamline and archive these records in a single location. Using Microsoft OneNote, videos with accompanying observation notes can be stored, organized, and retrieved for all students. By creating electronic forms of all Math Recovery documents and using a tablet PC’s webcam for video capture, the district has been able to go paperless, reduce costs, and increase efficiency. Welcome to Class - Today I will be Teaching From...Las Vegas! Room 101 Steve Gough - NSU Center For Statewide E-learning Teaching from Nevada to South Dakota, I had the opportunity to really put the distance part of my job to work. Six years ago when I started teaching for the Center for Statewide E-learning in Aberdeen, I was amazed that I could teach to students from one corner of the state to another with the help of the DDN network, however I certainly never thought that I would be able to teach my classes in South Dakota from Las Vegas. Due to a family medical emergency in early November, I had to take an unexpected trip to my parents’ home in Las Vegas, Nevada. I had to figure out what I could do with my classes so the students would not fall behind. Through a program called Camtasia I recorded my class sessions and posted them on the Desire2Learn (D2L) site for each class. I was able to continue with my classes according to my lesson plans and did not have to lose teaching time with my students. Could this be done in a regular classroom? My answer is yes! If you know you are going to be absent from class, you could pre-record your lesson from any computer with a web-cam and just have your substitute play it for the class. In this session I will focus on how I am using Camtasia in my courses currently, things I plan on doing and things you could do with it in a regular classroom setting. A program such as Lightroom is a lower cost alternative to Photoshop that hits the mark for schools on a budget who also want to deliver high-quality content in the creative realm. About Kevin Honeycutt Kevin spent 13 years teaching in public schools. He currently hosts a creative learning site called ArtSnacks (www.artsnacks.org) where he shares 150+ tenminute drawing videos that support standards curriculum. Kevin is also in his eighth year researching and developing programs with a strong passion for making teachers and learners comfortable with technology. He has developed an online safety, anti-bullying and cyber-bullying curriculum that is shared with parents, teachers and students around the country. Kevin is passionate about meeting the needs of at-risk learners and works with kids in juvenile detention, developing approaches to re-engage the â&#x20AC;&#x153;lostâ&#x20AC;? learner. He brings personal life experience and a sense of humor to the mission of helping prepare 21st Century learners!

In addition to ongoing work responding to a diversity of school needs, TIE administers a host of major grants programs at the state and federal level. TIE has established a strong reputation as a collaborative partner and progressive leader committed to helping schools build essential capacity for improving teaching and learning in these changing times. Noted as a change agent, TIE “walks the talk” by modeling effective processes for accomplishing meaningful organization development and change. TIE leaders appreciate the challenges facing practitioners in the field and strive to identify practical, meaningful strategies for applying the learnings of sound educational research to teaching and learning in classrooms. TIE offers online workshops free of charge to faculty members in TIE Member schools. They provide the content most in demand through an asynchronous format that works for the busy schedules of teachers, administrators, and other education professionals. Many workshops even have the opportunity for graduate credit. TIE strives to stay on the cutting-edge, developing new workshops with a focus on technology integration, 21st Century skills, and contentbased strategies. All of our professional development activities strive to meet the standards set by the National Staff Development Council, while addressing the needs of adult learners.

About TIE

Established in 1986 as a regional, non-profit project, Technology and Innovation in Education (TIE) is administered by Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, an intermediate educational agency. It is TIE’s mission to serve as a source of professional development that assists and empowers educational communities to respond productively and responsibly in a networked global society. On an annual basis, TIE provides professional development activities for more than 10,000 educators across the region. TIE has a membership structure designed to address specific needs of South Dakota schools. Nearly 100% of school districts and public universities in South Dakota, and many in surrounding states, choose to participate in the TIE membership program.

TIE also offers exclusive technology integration training options for schools and districts, all of which may be customized based on specific needs. Potential topics include: blogs, web literacy for effective research, visual literacy, collaboration, digital footprint, Internet safety and virtual learning environments. General Conference Information College Credit TIE Conference participants will have the opportunity to register for one graduate credit. The cost for this one graduate credit is $40 from any of the following: • Board of Regents Universal Credit (BHSU, DSU, NSU, SDSU or USD) • Dakota Wesleyan University • University of Sioux Falls Representatives from the participating colleges will be available to answer questions and accept payment for graduate credit on Tuesday, April 5 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Cash, checks, & credit cards will be accepted. To be eligible, participants are required to: • Attend a Sunday Indepth session. The necessary graduate credit enrollment forms will be provided there. • Attend the Sunday evening keynote address. • Attend 6 hours of sessions and/or events on Monday. • Attend 4 hours of sessions and/or events on Tuesday. • Write a reflection paper (deadline April 13). • Complete the online survey. Continuing Education Contact Hours Under your name badge, you will find a certificate for continuing education contact hours. Other than your social security number (you fill this in before submitting to SD DOE), it shows all of the information needed, including the amount of hours for which you registered at the TIE Conference. Please note: TIE does not track individual participant CEUs nor do we issue duplicate certificates if the original is lost. You will need to contact DOE for a new contact hours form. Please complete an evaluation of the 2011 TIE Conference. Your feedback helps us provide the conference YOU want, year after year. (Required for credit) Cancellation Policy Requests for refunds for registration cancellations will be honored up to 10 days prior to the conference. On your name badge sheet, you have been provided with “business cards” - feel free to give these cards to vendors who you would like to have your contact information. Student Media Fair The South Dakota Association for Communications and Technology (SDACT) and the Northern Plains AECT, affiliated with the National Association for Educational Communications Technology host a contest for South Dakota students who wish to develop projects in the areas of commercial authoring programs, computergenerated art, videotape, and photography. Student projects will be displayed in booth #1 sponsored by SDACT as part of the conference exhibit hall. Awards will be presented to the winners in each category Monday at 4:00 during the Festival of Technology. Technology Leadership Awards Nominations were sought for leaders in TIE Member Schools who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in implementing technology to improve K-12 education. A K-12 teacher will be awarded during the Sunday keynote, and a technology leader will be awarded during the Tuesday morning keynote. The 3rd Annual Dr. James Parry Technology Leadership Legacy Award will be presented in honor of TIE’s founder and former director for 22 years during Monday’s keynote. Festival of Technology Two festival events are planned in the conference exhibit hall to allow participants ample opportunity to spend time with vendors. The Festival of Technology Grand Opening is scheduled from 3:00-5:00 pm on Monday. A Festival of Technology Celebration is scheduled from 10:40-11:30 on Tuesday. Each festival will include complimentary snacks, refreshments and prize drawings. Drawings for Prizes TIE and its partners are giving away iPads, computers, technology products, and gift packages. Drawings will take place throughout the conference, including a special kick-off drawing after Sunday night’s keynote. There will be more chances to win Monday after the lunch break and during the Festival of Technology.
