who we are

Berkeley Hall, an independent nursery through eighth grade school, was founded in 1911 by two dedicated educators: Leila and Mabel Cooper. They viewed children as inherently good, intelligent, inquisitive, capable, and uniquely talented individuals. Their educational philosophy and approach was rooted in their study of Christian Science, which recognizes such God-given qualities and capabilities as being innate within each child. The Cooper sisters’ spiritual view of children fueled their desire to establish a school wherein each student would be embraced by a “no limits, no labels, and lots of love” culture and learning environment. That credo still guides Berkeley Hall today.

what we do

We unlock potential. We instill a love of learning. We prepare children to succeed. We inspire children to make a positive, meaningful difference in the world. Berkeley Hall teachers encourage and foster inquisitiveness, self-discovery, and a deep love of learning. Teachers here help students set high standards and exceed expectations, while supporting, nurturing, and mentoring them along the way. Our teachers inspire our students to grow, explore, learn, and prepare for rigorous high school and college or university studies, and, most of all, to lead lives of purpose, meaning, and accomplishment. Indeed, Berkeley Hall

teachers empower their students to be active, perceptive thinkers, whose love of learning and determination to be a positive difference makers in the world, will define them for a lifetime. Berkeley Hall teachers are passionate about enabling their students – your children – to experience the joy and satisfaction of fulfilling their full potential. Our core values of respect (for both others and oneself), responsibility, compassion, and honesty were established by Berkeley Hall students and teachers themselves, and are integrated into our academic, arts, and athletic programs on a daily basis. And our balanced learning environment includes the development of moral, intellectual, social, and artistic sensibilities and athletic capabilities.

ear Parents, Alumni, Friends, and Supporters of Berkeley Hall,

As I reflect on all that has transpired at Berkeley Hall since the publication of last year’s Report of Giving, I am humbled and grateful for the progress we have made and the accomplishments we have achieved. Put simply, we have done much good together over the past school year. Academic program enrichments, faculty development initiatives, and campus renovations that were then in their infancy are thriving today, largely thanks to donors and supporters who stepped up to make it possible for us to invest and expand in these critically important areas. This 2015-16 Report of Giving is a recognition of all those who have generously given of their time, talent, energy, and resources to advance the mission and cause of Berkeley Hall School during the past fiscal year. We know that the school could not move forward without you. So, on behalf of the faculty and staff of the school, thank you to all who have supported Berkeley Hall in ways that have enabled it to flourish. As I mentioned in my message in last year’s report, our school community’s commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism has been indispensable to the success and growth of Berkeley Hall from the outset. And that is certainly the case today. The support of the donors and volunteers listed in this report has enhanced and strengthened our ability to achieve our mission in present times and in the years to come. Your support enables our committed faculty and staff to maintain a student-centered learning environment that is keenly focused on

helping every one of our students to fulfill his or her unlimited Godgiven potential as a fearless scholar and conscientious citizen. Just as I am grateful to all those whose names and work and gifts are reflected in this report, I am grateful to our students and teachers for the joy, determination, and commitment they bring to the hard work of learning, discovering, growing, leading, and collaborating. It is an honor and a privilege to be part of this wonderful learning community. I look forward to strengthening our partnership and advancing Berkeley Hall School to new heights and ever greater levels of excellence, service, and accomplishment. Sincerely,

Lisle Staley, PhD. Head of School

Berkeley Hall is a premier independent school today thanks to the dedication and expertise of its faculty and administrators, generous supporters, and committed volunteers – most notably the members of the Board of Trustees. Trustee leadership and governance guides Berkeley Hall’s progress in implementing its Strategic Plan for advancing and fulfilling the school’s mission. The primary responsibility of the Board of Trustees is to provide policy oversight that will enable Berkeley Hall to continue as a leading N - 8 independent school in the Los Angeles area and beyond. In that capacity, Berkeley Hall trustees serve as fiduciaries to protect the financial, physical, and other assets of the school, balancing the needs of current and future generations of Berkeley Hall constituents. Trustees

have a responsibility to ensure that long-range planning is integrated into the Board, Committee, and operational management processes. To perpetuate strong leadership of the school, trustees are responsible for selecting the Head of School; for providing advice on issues, operations, and staffing as required by the Head of School; and for providing support for the Head of School’s efforts to lead Berkeley Hall and implement policies adopted by the Board. Berkeley Hall trustees are a highly accomplished, experienced, dedicated, and passionate group of people who share an uncommon loyalty for, and commitment to, Berkeley Hall and its status as one of the best schools of its kind in the United States.

ear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to acknowledge and thank those who contributed to Berkeley Hall during the 2015 – 16 school year. Contributions to Berkeley Hall come in many forms, including cash, checks, stocks and bonds, myriad auction items for our fundraising gala, time, energy, ideas, and creativity. These contributions come from a wide variety of sources across the BHS community. We deeply appreciate the support, financial and otherwise, that they provide. In terms of financial contributions, I am happy to report that supporters of Berkeley Hall donated $1,042,290 last year, which is a record high yearly total for the school, excluding capital campaigns. Over 90% of current BHS families contributed to our Annual Fund, while 100% of our faculty and staff added their financial support. Our sincere thanks also go out to all who contributed their time, energy, creativity, and ideas. It seems no one has “spare” time anymore, and yet dozens of parents contribute hundreds of hours to help Berkeley Hall over the course of the school year. A special thank you is owed to our Mothers’ and Dads’ Clubs for the many activities that provided financial contributions and, even more, opportunities for involvement in the Berkeley Hall community. Berkeley Hall clearly is on the move. I trust that you will join me in supporting the school’s ongoing process as it continues to follow

a thoughtful plan for enhancing its already impressive educational program, faculty, and facilities. The financial resources you and your fellow donors provide enable Berkeley Hall to grow, innovate, and strengthen its academics, learning environment, student experience, and community. We are all fortunate to be part of the Berkeley Hall family, but our students are the true beneficiaries. In no small part, that is due to the efforts and contributions of Berkeley Hall supporters dating back decades. Working in an ever-greater partnership with our parents, alumni, friends, and supporters, I am confident that future generations of students at Berkeley Hall will be equally blessed. With gratitude,

Margaret Andrews Board Chair

Strategic Plan The following strategic plan has been adopted by Berkeley Hall’s Board of Trustees. This plan sets the agenda for the Administration and for the Board for the next five years.

06

Berkeley Hall, a nursery through eighth grade school, was founded in 1911 by two dedicated educators, Leila and Mabel Cooper. Their approach to education was rooted in their study of Christian Science, which recognizes that God-given qualities are a part of each child’s nature. This approach is still the core of a Berkeley Hall education. Our teachers, all of whom are active Christian Scientists, cherish each child as inherently intelligent, good, inquisitive, and uniquely talented. They help students exceed expectations and encourage exploration and discovery, while supporting and nurturing them. Berkeley Hall is not a church-supported or parochial school. The Christian Science religion is not taught in the classrooms, but spiritual principles of love, respect, and self-esteem underlie all aspects of school life. Our balanced learning environment includes the advancement of intellectual, moral, social, artistic, and physical capabilities. Character education has always been an integral part of our program. The school is committed to serving a diverse student body and seeks applicants with records of strong academic ability and achievement, solid citizenship, and high moral values. Parents must embrace the academic and ethical standards of the Berkeley Hall community and be willing to participate as partners with the school in their child’s education.

T

he financial support provided to Berkeley Hall by its donors enables our teachers and administrators to provide our students with an outstanding high school preparatory education that will help them reach their potential in high school and beyond. And the admissions officers at the high schools in which Berkeley Hall alumni apply and enroll clearly recognize our graduates as fearless scholars and conscientious citizens. They recognize BHS students as young people who know themselves and know what they want to contribute to their school communities. They recognize our students as inspired (and inspiring!) learners, strong, poised, self-confident and self-directed leaders, who are academically and socially prepared to contribute greatly to their respective high schools and, later, colleges and universities. In short, the top high schools in the Los Angeles area want our students because they know that Berkeley Hall graduates go on to do great things. All of this is borne out in LA-area high school statistics every year. For the class of 2016, nearly nine-out-of-ten of our graduates got into their top-choice school. That is a huge accomplishment, and speaks volumes about Berkeley Hall’s stature and reputation throughout the Los Angeles area.

PROFILE IN GIVING

Our Rich Partnership with Tocaloma Summer Day Camp BY C A ROLINE KUH N, B ERK EL EY H AL L SCH O O L PR ESI D EN T EMER I TA

“H

ave you ever thought about building a swimming pool?” asked Mike Suzuki, the first time he met Caroline Kuhn, then President of the Berkeley Hall School Board of Trustees, way back in 1999. Caroline’s response was a polite “yes, and we already have the pad prepared, but we just haven’t had the funds available to build a swimming pool.” After thinking silently for a few moments, Mike replied, “well, maybe we can help make it happen.” Little did Caroline know then, but this brief conversation was the beginning of an extremely meaningful, mutually beneficial, and enduring partnership between Tocaloma and Berkeley Hall School. After the BHS Board of Trustees analyzed and reviewed the possibilities and met with Mr. Suzuki, the project was given the proverbial green light and a lengthy construction process began. A formal contract between Berkeley Hall and Tocaloma was created and signed, a pool contractor was selected, a local architect, Gil Stayner, who was a BHS parent at the time, contributed designs and expertise for the pool house changing facility and patio area, and the overall design for the swimming pool complex was approved. But the greatest task of all was for Mike Suzuki to convince his bank to lend him the money to build a swimming pool on land he did not own! Part of the agreement reached between the School and the Camp was to allow Tocaloma to bring its youngest campers to Berkeley Hall. At that time, Tocaloma’s summer day camp program was based at Curtis School. Soon after entering into its formal agreement with Berkeley Hall, Tocaloma began shifting its camp to the BHS campus. Within a few years, its entire camp program was based at Berkeley Hall.

Why was Berkeley Hall such a natural fit with Tocaloma … and vice versa? The answer lies in the vision, dedication, and underlying values of the two organizations. Both organizations were founded on the basis of character building, on fostering the best ideals, and on striving for excellence in education – and on encouraging its students and campers to make a positive difference in the world around them. Indeed, in many ways the Tocaloma camp program serves as a summertime extension of Berkeley Hall’s academic program. Today, throughout the summer, nearly 400 youngsters from the ages of four to twelve are on our campus, learning, playing, growing, experiencing the joys of community, and enjoying our varied and wonderful campus and facilities. This story – this partnership – began over 18 years ago. Over the years, Tocaloma has worked with Berkeley Hall to enhance and strengthen the learning (and playing!) environment of our beautiful campus and classrooms. In addition to contributing the swimming pool complex, it has supported and funded many other campus improvements. In the 2015-16 school year alone, Tocaloma was the lead financial supporter of the new guardhouse on campus, and, even more, provided the funding needed to renovate our handsome new Primary and Early Childhood Department playgrounds. Indeed, the Camp was the single biggest donor to Berkeley Hall School in the past fiscal year, one of several instances over the years in which that has been the case. This deeply rooted and mutually supportive partnership has benefited both organizations beyond measure. We thank and commemorate Tocaloma’s leadership, Mr. Mike Suzuki, counselors, and staffers for their substantial and unwavering support of Berkeley Hall, and we look forward to many more years of working together!

PROFILE IN GIVING

Mrs. Fern Roberts

F

ern Roberts is best defined by her unwavering commitment to the Berkeley Hall School idea in education. Fern’s entry into her adventure with Berkeley Hall began when she enrolled her young son Kevin in the 60’s on the Beverly Hills campus. Her enthusiasm for the school was quickly evident as she became involved in the Mothers’ Club and its many activities. That involvement increased until she ultimately served as Mothers’ Club President. Her earlier professional career as a model and work in the fashion industry even benefited Berkeley Hall as she narrated and “emceed” the Fashion Shows for the Junior High girls’ modeling of their own creations made in the Home Economics classes. Whatever Fern did was always accomplished with elegance, grace, flair and enthusiasm. Fern’s commitment naturally expanded in her active role as a Trustee of Berkeley Hall on the Mulholland campus for 15 years, where she served on the Finance and Development committees. Ideas flowed from her in Development Department meetings where she shared thoughts for the School’s philanthropic outreach efforts based on “best practices” she was seeing at work in the community. Fern simply loved to share Berkeley Hall, and she found ways to invite friends, who usually had no prior connection with the school, to special events. She encouraged them to join her in financially supporting the school through annual gifts or participation in Capital Campaigns. Fern herself led the way and inspired others to see the value in supporting excellence in education for the next generations. You could always count on her presence at special school events, from serving

at the honored spot at the Tea table at the Graduation Teas, to graduations, awards assemblies, galas, country fairs, and on and on. Most of all, years ago Fern made a commitment to participating in Berkeley Hall’s annual giving campaigns through recurring monthly donations from her personal checking account. (She even arranged to have the monthly amount donated automatically increased each year to keep up with inflation!) Fern has maintained that monthly donation commitment through all the intervening years, through thick and thin, despite whatever other financial challenges or circumstances arose along the way. Although her donations were modest at the beginning, her unwavering and ongoing commitment to participating in the School’s annual fundraising campaigns has resulted in a cumulative impact and contribution that truly has made an incredible difference to Berkeley Hall, its students, and families over the years. You see, Fern’s generosity and support of the School, demonstrated continuously over the years, has made her one of the top donors to Berkeley Hall overall over the past four decades. Her commitment continues to this day, as her continuing financial contributions underscore her love for Berkeley Hall and everything that it stands for. With abiding appreciation and gratitude, we thank and honor Mrs. Fern Roberts!

BERKELEY HALL SCHOOL

Ways to GIVE Berkeley Hall, like most independent schools, relies upon charitable gifts beyond tuition income to support and strengthen its academic, artistic, and athletic programs. The special attributes that set Berkeley Hall apart — small classes, individualized instruction, innovative teaching, a diverse student body, a spectacular 66-acre campus amidst the beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains, well-maintained facilities, and dynamic, enriching educational opportunities beyond core classes — are costly to provide and maintain. Rather than simply increasing tuition by whatever amount is necessary to support them, we solicit tax-deductible donations through various philanthropic initiatives that help Berkeley Hall and enable families to give based on their ability.

CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, or American Express. Credit card gifts can be made online at www.berkeleyhaIl.org/give by contacting Sara Swallow at sswallow@berkeleyhall.org or at (310) 476-6421 x206.

RECURRING GIFTS Berkeley Hall provides the opportunity to give at any frequency or recurring time periods. If you are interested in giving a monthly, quarterly, or yearly donation, please visit our website at www.berkeleyhaIl.org/give.

MATCHING GIFTS Gift matching is a way to increase the value of your own charitable gift through your employer. Corporate Matching Gift programs are a great way to double or triple your gift. Some companies match gifts made by employees, retirees, and/or spouses. You can check with your employer or on the Berkeley Hall website at www.berkeleyhall. org/waystogive to determine if your gift is eligible for matching. Simply send us the appropriate paperwork from your employer’s Human Resources Department, and your gift to Berkeley Hall School will be matched according to your employer’s guidelines. We will take care of the rest.

STOCKS OR BONDS Should you wish to make a donation of stock and/or bonds to Berkeley Hall, please visit www.berkeleyhall.org/waystogive for more information.

GIFTS-IN-KIND We welcome gifts of goods or services that may provide a budgetary savings to Berkeley Hall to fulfill a particular departmental or educational need. Per IRS guidelines, Berkeley Hall will provide a thank you letter substantiating your in-kind gift. Please consult with your tax advisor to identify the tax benefits specific to such a gift.

REAL ESTATE Giving a gift of real estate, such as a personal home, vacation home, undeveloped property, or a farm, can be a highly effective philanthropic and financial strategy. To discuss the tax and other benefits of making a gift of real estate, or of any other related type of investment, contact Rick Fields, Director of Advancement at (310) 476-6421, x203. In whichever ways you choose to give, please know that Berkeley Hall deeply appreciates your consideration, partnership, and financial support.

thankyou!
