STUDENT TO QUALIFIED TEACHER

From past pupil to qualified teacher, Miss Solomon a past pupil of Beaconhurst high school, has had quiet the adventure since her school days. Miss Solomon took a gap year after High school to travel and explore the world, while exploring she was fascinated by the Vietnamese culture and settled down for a year, where she found her true passion which is teaching English.

A year later she returned to South Africa to study teaching and majored in English and History at Nelson Mandela University. Close to finishing her teaching degree Miss Solomon was offered a maternity teaching position at Beaconhurst High school.

Miss Solomon says she chose teaching high school children because she felt it a lot easier to connect to them on a personal level but also being able to help guide them through life when they need it the most.

She is a committed and understanding teacher, even if I do say so myself. It’s rare to find such an amazing teacher like Miss Solomon, a teacher who’s so full of life, caring and stylish.

She graduated NMU on the 19" April 2023. We all wish her well on her amazing journey and her incredible life that waits ahead. Being taught by Miss Solomon has been truly a gift to me but man has she been ONE TOUGH COOKIE TO CRACK.

This April marked the first month without one of the most inspirational teachers on campus, Mr. Oosthuizen, as he closed his Beaconhurst chapter to go and inspire more learners at Baysville School of Skills.

Mr. Oosthuizen has been part of the Beaconhurst Family for more than 15 years. In those years, he acted as a teacher and the inventor of the best toasted sandwich at our school. In addition to being a teacher at Beaconhurst, Mr. O was a mentor, role model, and a safe space to learners.

From the stories of when he was in the army to the serious lectures he would give us, Mr. O was able to inspire, encourage and entertain the learners to give them the best learning experiences that they could ever receive. The impact he had on the school community is infinite, and his vibrant, contagious energy will be missed.

On behalf of the Beaconhurst Family, we would like to extend our gratitude for all that Mr. Oosthuizen has done for the school and we wish him the utmost best in his future endeavors.

THOSE WHO WISH TO SING ALWAYS FIND A SONG!

On the 21 of April 2023, the Matrics hosted a memorable karaoke night, which took place at the Aubrey Norman minihall at Beaconhurst High School. The theme was pyjama night!

Everyone took part including the teachers who teach matrics, singing on top of their lungs, dancing all night long, and having an extravagant time with their peers. Some braved the stage as groups but a few solo performance. Blew us away!

They sang multiple genres and artist like Frank Ocean, SZA, Steve Lacy, j.cole, The Beatles, Daniel Caesar, you name it!

Pictures were taken to capture the beautiful moments and memories as crunch time nears.

While we’re sure many of you reading have tried a vape at least once, do you truly know what it is and its affects on your heath?

Vaping is a result from puffing that activates the battery-powered heating device, which evaporates the liquid in the cartridge. The person vaping then inhales that vapor. Vapes contain nicotine, flavouring and more than 30 other chemicals when inhaled. The nicotine and chemicals go straight into the bloodstream.

There are many risks in vaping both long and short term. Many vapors, maybe even you; have experienced coughing, headaches, shortness of breath, throat and mouth irritation all of which are side effects of vaping. Vaping can also cause asthma, lung scaring & damage, organ damage, most of which are incurable and cause death. On the rare occasions vapes have exploded causing death.

Overly charged and overheated batteries turn faulty which causes a vape to explode or turn to flames.

Since Vapes contain nicotine they become quickly and highly addictive.

10 learners were interviewed. 9 of the 10 admitting to having vaped before.

When asked the reason as to why they vaped, their answers where all similar, being that their friends were vaping or they saw a cousin vape.

Despite stores being discouraged to sell vapes to minors they still either bought vapes themselves or had a friend buy it for them.

Ways to fight addiction is to find better solutions to stress or surround yourself with people who will help you fight your addiction instead of encouraging it.

BEACONHURST CLASHES WITH STUTTERHEIM SCHOOL IN DERBY DAY

HOCKEYS BACK WITH A BIG BANG !

Hockey, after 4 years, has re-emerged from the horrors of Covid-19. This sport has had great support from its players with numerous participants from all grades.

We believe that with the return of Mrs. Musgrave who has taught abroad and returned back to her roots at Beaconhurst School we will bring hockey back to its former glory. She has a shining reputation as a hockey coach.

Learners are excited hockey hoping that new opportunities will arise from it. Hockey has never been this popular amongst the learners but I believe with our new esteemed coach they will have a great chance of success in this season and for many years to come

On Saturday, 22 April, Beaconhurst School played host to a rugby and netball derby against Stutterheim School. As the two schools clashed on the field, supporters were treated to an exciting derby that Beaconhurst has hosted for the first time in 2023.

Beaconhurst’s rugby teams dominated the day, scoring victories against their opponents in both age groups.

The U/15 fought to a 5-3 victory, with Siyema Mdyogolo giving his best rugby performance. The U/16 closed off the derby with 10-0 victory over Stutterheim High School.

Unfortunately, Beaconhurst High School's netball teams faced defeat against Stutterheim, despite putting up a determined fight.

With the First Team losing by 31-19 and the U/15s losing by 10-9, the netball players were left feeling disappointed but determined to continue to work hard and improve for future games.

Congratulations to all the players from both schools for an entertaining showing.
