Investigating U9: Flawed or a Success? BY CLARA BROWNSTEIN & JOSEPHINE MORASKY news editor & staff writer

In 2015, Tamara Friedman and Glenn Wolkenfeld, then-professional development coordinators at Berkeley High School (BHS), decided that BHS needed to change. An achievement gap persisted along racial lines, and students who could have been helped were falling through the cracks. Although Friedman had been focused on closing the achievement gap for years, it was when she and Wolkenfeld attended a Linda Darling-Hammond lecture at the University of California (UC), Berkeley that the idea began to solidify. Darling-Hammond’s research focuses on the importance of strong personal relationships with teachers, teaching that facilitates deep engagement, and coordination among teachers to im-

prove support for students. The talk helped inspire Friedberg and Wolkenfeld. Soon after, the Universal Ninth Grade (U9) was born. There are probably many accounts of how BHS conceived the U9 program, but this is the story as told by Hasmig Minassian, an Ethnic Studies teacher at BHS and now the lead teacher of the U9. Minassian recalls that Friedman and Wolkenfeld formed a working group, which then spent a year getting their plan approved by the school board, and another year organizing its implementation — culminating in its creation in the 2018-19 school year. The program is relatively simple at first glance; it puts all eight hundred ninth graders together at BHS their freshman year, instead of immediately placing them into Small Learning Communities (SLCs). Freshmen are now in “hives” made up of 120 students and four PAGE 8

BHS Community Celebrates Ramadan BY FINOLA JACKSON staff writer

“When you see someone starving on the street, it’s like getting a glimpse of what they have to go through on a daily basis,” said Academic Choice (AC) junior Afnan Saleh on fasting during Ramadan. For

her, fasting leads to a better understanding of what people going hungry are experiencing. On May 2, Muslims celebrated Eid-al-Fitr, the last day of Ramadan, after a month that many Berkeley High School (BHS) students spent fasting. During Ramadan, on April 21, members of the Muslim Student Association

(MSA) gathered in a classroom to celebrate iftar, the daily meal where Muslims celebrating Ramadan break their daily fast. As per tradition, the club invited all janitorial staff, who work late hours at the school, to join them in eating a variety of foods catered by a local restaurant. Celebrations included discussing Islam

and playing games like an Islam-themed Kahoot. Ramadan celebrates the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims believe that during the month of Ramadan, the prophet Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the Islamic holy book. Ramadan is typically celebrated by fasting from PAGE 11
