BUSD Sustainability Program and Climate Literacy Resolution work in tandem to ensure bright future for Berkeley students BY EVA KATZ staff writer

In 2018, Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) adopted the Sustainability Program and Plan. The plan covers green buildings and materials, transportation, water, energy, waste, food, schoolyards, and eco-literacy and nature-based education. Then, in 2021, the Climate Literacy Resolution was unanimously passed by BUSD. The Climate Literacy Resolution aims to teach all ages of students about climate change science, issues, and solutions. Ellen McClure, who has taken on the new position as the BUSD Climate Literacy teacher, is focused on “working with K–12 staff to advance project-based climate change and environmental justice learning opportunities for students in the district, based on BUSD’s Climate Literacy Resolution” according to the California Environmental Literacy Initiative. “This is the first semester this position has existed ... Because this is a really new program, developing a plan that works for everyone and supports teachers while also taking into account all the other things that teachers have to do (has been difficult). How do we include this education into what’s already happening?” said McClure. PAGE 2 ELLIOT SCHRAG

Barbara Mellion retires after years at BHS BY JASPER LOVVORNBLACK staff writer

“I’m functioning as if I’m not retiring. And I have to (tell) my mind like, ‘Okay, you need to start shutting things down. You need to start

cleaning up your office, you know, and kind of throwing stuff out,’” Barbara Mellion said. Mellion has been working in multiple positions at Berkeley High School since 1980. Currently, she is the district registrar, where she “(fulfills) multiple roles

at BHS, primarily as the custodian of student records.” However, after 43 years of working at BHS, Mellion plans to retire before the spring semester. Mellion’s current job as registrar has both technical and social aspects. She handles transcripts for the

whole school and former students both electronically and via physical copies. According to Mellion, “it gets kind of tricky, a little bit … I have to combine the two of them together and make it work.” Mellion has continued to adapt to changing systems, and has had PAGE 10

“The duty of the captain is to listen to the team, and communicate anything that they hear about, and the needs of the team, to the coaches and communicate from the coaches to the team,” said Tilda Koven, a Berkeley High School senior and cocaptain of the womens varsity crew team. Over the five months that they have been captain, they have faced the unique challenges presented to leaders on sports teams. There are many shared experiences and difficulties among captains across these teams. Kyle Hayden, the head badminton coach, agreed with Koven. “The main thing

I look for in a team captain is that I want them to act as a sort of go-between between the rest of the team and myself,” Hayden said. BHS sophomore Juna French, captain of the JV girls soccer team feels that being team captain helps her concentrate as an athlete. “I’m responsible for being more of a leader on the team. It makes me focus more at practice, and just stay a little more on top of my game,” French said. According to Antonio Quinto, BHS senior and captain of the badminton team, one quality that makes being captain easier is his passion for helping others learn to improve their game. “My favorite thing is teaching other people, because I like seeing other people PAGE 16
