Teachers seek to incorporate Indigenous stories in their classes as Thanksgiving approaches

BY RORY NADEAU staff writer

At Berkeley High School, as Thanksgiving approaches, history teachers grapple with how to go about teaching the authentic history of Thanksgiving and how to educate their students on the experiences of Indigenous peoples in general. BHS history teacher Jumari Callaway encourages her students to challenge what they may have been previously taught about Thanksgiving. “We kind of compare like, ‘what were you taught when you were five about Thanksgiving?’ with ‘what do you know now about Thanksgiving PAGE 2

Crew and mountain biking perception harms BHS athletes BY SYDNEY LEHRER staff writer

Historically, crew and mountain biking have had primarily white demographics. This issue remains prevalent amongst both teams at Berkeley High School. “It’s definitely a rich, white sport,” said Ella McGlone, a BHS sophomore on the varsity women’s crew team. Senior Miguel HuhndorfLima is one of the relatively few students of color on the BHS mountain biking team. “I’ve definitely felt alienation and isolation on the team,” he said. “I’m not necessarily involved in the social aspect

as much as other people simply because the people there, I feel I can’t relate to (them) a lot of the time.” For crew and mountain biking, a large part of the lack of diversity that hurts both teams is the continued perception of the sports as only having rich and white members. This is often due to the high financial costs of both sports, which can deter interested athletes. However, these perceptions don’t come out of nowhere, with data from USRowing demonstrating that only 13.75 percent of their registered rowers are people of color. “There’s definitely some stereotype about (crew) that’s almost PAGE 16

Students perform in dynamic talent show BY CECILIA TILES staff writer

The 2023 Berkeley High School Talent Show was filled with laughs, song, dance, and surprise original raps. Families, friends, and

students arrived at BHS’ Little Theater on Thursday, Nov. 2, to watch an hour and a half of students performing their acts and talents. This year’s show was run per usual by the sophomore leadership and John Villavicencio. A highlight of the night

was the remarkable dance performed by freshman twin sisters Catalina and Valentina Oyanadel Alfaro. The two performed in near perfect unison to the song “Break My Heart Myself ” by Bebe Rexha, dressed in matching green pants. They

started off the song hand in hand. The performance was upbeat, and almost eerie to watch as the two girls mirrored each other’s movements perfectly. Whether it was a sidestep or an arm raise, they were in perfect sync. PAGE 13
