Neighborhood Summer 2021

N E WS

From the Administrator’s Desk Hello Brookings Health System! My name is Jeremy Klinkhammer and I am the new administrator here at The Neighborhoods. I couldn’t be happier to join the team here. I have been here for about seven weeks and I am blown away at all of the great people that work within this health system. The Neighborhoods is a wonderful building and has a great history of being one of the best nursing homes in the state. I look forward to continuing that tradition and using my years of experience to making The Neighborhoods an even better place to care for the wonderful people of Brookings and surrounding communities. As I said earlier, I have been here for about seven weeks. I have 16 years of nursing home administrator experience. I have a passion for long term care and I don’t see myself anywhere else. My wife, Lexy, is a CRNA at the new Avera hospital in Sioux Falls. We have three children, Langdon (12), Bentley (10) and our little self-proclaimed “boss princess,” Berkley (4). The boys are active in all sports, with wrestling being their main sport. Berkley loves—well maybe not loves—but enjoys going to all of the boys activities and is going to be starting preschool this fall. We love to spend time as a family and enjoy sneaking away on vacation as often as our busy schedules allow. As we continue to navigate our way through this pandemic, we will keep everyone posted on any and all of the new guidelines. We would all like this to go away and get back to normal. What that normal looks like, I am honestly not sure. We will do everything we can to assist in meeting the needs of all the loved ones we have here at The Neighborhoods. I look forward to continuing to meet everyone and assisting any way I can to continue the wonderful tradition of The Neighborhoods! Take care and God bless!

Activities Update Residents were thrilled to participate in the Old Timer’s Day parade in Volga. One of the residents may have started eating the candy while she was waiting for the parade to start! Thank you to Annica, Sara, Marshall, Amanda and Darian for making this outing happen.

Residents enjoyed sampling cookies and filling up a bag to take home with them.

Residents enjoyed the opportunity to jump on the BATA Bus and cruise up and down the streets of Brookings. It was a joy to share and listen to stories from the past.

GREETINGS FROM So what have the residents of Maple/Ash been up to? Well, we do crafts and patio manicures. We take bike rides all over town. We bake and, of course, share what we bake for coffee time. We wish one of our co-workers much luck as she moves on to continue her education. We loved a visit from Tyra’s dog, and we admire our new flower and fairy garden on the patio. Whew! Happy summer everyone!

OAK LANE & BIRCH WAY

Time on the patio continues to be enjoyed by most of the residents on Oak/Birch. We get outside as often as the weather allows. A person is never too old for fun and games with a parachute, balls and music! So much laughter!

Annica and the residents on Oak/Birch are currently reading My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen. Next they plan to read The Richest Man in Town by VJ Smith. When you all wear yellow shirts, a selfie is a must!

Beer, wine, soda, punch, coffee, water. The beverage choice doesn’t matter. Happy hour is a favorite activity for all!

What vegetable likes talking on the phone the most? Maria and Amanda enjoy time looking at the flowers at Medary Acres.

By resident request, we made rhubarb sauce! We cooked the sauce in the morning and in the afternoon, the rhubarb sauce was served over ice cream!

CALL-Y FLOWER

Adding color to the courtyard. Thank you to Derek for making this wonderful flower box to help show off all the color and beauty of the flowers. We even had a box to plant a few tomato plants, hopefully we will get a few tomatoes to enjoy.
