What a year this has been! The individual accomplishments and the organizational ones continue to amaze us. We recognize this has not been a normal year. Yet, we have continued to be creative in our efforts to demonstrate our appreciation for your continual engagement and efforts in caring for our community.

The FVH Nurse Residency Program was a 6-month program that prepared new nurses for a position at FVH. The program included one day a week of didactic that included clinical skill, professional knowledge, journaling, and ended with a poster project. Residents chose a topic that they found interesting and meaningful to present at graduation. The program had 7 new nurses. They all received an 8-week MedSurg rotation along with rotations in the ED, CCU, MAT, and the OR. They worked with preceptors in each department to gain valuable experience related to each specialty. The 6-month program was culminated with a graduation ceremony.

Pride in Food Service Week This week is a time to celebrate and recognize the important role Food service people have and the difference they can make. Foodservice employees can create a good or a bad experience with just one interaction. Sometimes people don’t remember what the name of the hospital was where they had to visit a sick relative, but what people will remember, is the service that they encountered. “Good service can save a bad meal, but there is no level of food that can save bad service” – Alton Brown.

National Health Information Professionals Week: March 22- 28, 2020

Health Care HR Week is recognized the third week in March and was designated to recognize human resources professionals in healthcare organizations across the nation for their important role across the continuum of care. Thank you Michelle Lillie , Cynthia Couchman and George Moran for your dedication and helpfulness!

HIM, an allied health profession, leads efforts to ensure the availability, accuracy, integrity, and security of all data related to patient healthcare encounters, thus achieving better clinical and business decisions that enhance healthcare quality. They play a key role in the effective management of health data to deliver quality healthcare to the public.

Certified Nurses Day is an annual day of recognition for and by healthcare leaders dedicated to nursing professionalism, excellence, recognition, and service. Every March 19, employers, certification boards, education facilities, and healthcare providers celebrate and publicly acknowledge nurses who earn and maintain the highest credentials in their specialty. Certified Nurses Day honors nurses worldwide who contribute to better patient outcomes through national board certification in their specialty.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation week. The FVH Pulmonary Rehab consists of Barbara Hoolihan and Thomas Fleming. We hold class three times a week where we are constantly educating the patients on their illness and how they can cope and start exercise at home safely. We monitor the patients oxygen level, blood pressure and blood sugar pre and post exercise. If there are any abnormalities we contact their PCP. We are Nationally certified through AACVPR (American Association Cardio Vascular Pulmonary Rehabilitation).

March is Nutrition Month and in that month falls Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, which was celebrated on March 11th this year. We would like to recognize our two highly skilled Registered Dietitians (RD’s) for their professionalism, knowledge and versatility, and practiced not only at Fairview but also within the community. Robert Hoechster RD, LDN and Stephanie MacLeay RD, LDN offer individual inpatient and outpatient nutrition services, on site group community programs in various locations such as schools and community centers, consultation services for other organizations, as well as nutrition education for our Fairview staff. With the onset of Covid-19, Robert and Stephanie shifted to telemedicine visits, which has been incredibly popular to our clients and has put them both in high demand for their services. Congratulations Robert and Stephanie!

Social Work Month in March is a time to celebrate the great profession of social work. The theme for Social Work Month 2020 is Social Workers: Generations Strong . The theme has various meanings. As we enter a new decade it is important to look back and honor the powerful, positive impact the social work profession has had on our society for generations. We salute all nurses for answering the call to duty every day, and especially in this time of crisis. We admire your courage, resilience, and compassion. The way you’ve risen to the occasion reflects who you are — what you are made of and for. You are steadfastly on the front lines — just as Florence Nightingale was — bringing care and comfort to those in need. You are their nurse, their protector, their hero. Thank you for SHARING your clinical expertise with those who need it most. Thank you for CARING from deep in your heart. Thank you for DARING to be at the front lines when duty calls.

This important week gives us the opportunity to highlight our hospital, health system and health care workers and the innovative ways you are supporting the needs of the community members. With that in mind, this year’s celebration is taking the form of “A Week of Thanks.”

Congratulations on such wonderful contributions from each of you during our 4 day survey. Both surveyors shared many comments that you should hear.

“Your staff are engaging, knowledgeable and showed passion for what they do.” You did not hide; answered questions willingly.

“This is a very old building, it’s been well maintained and very well cleaned.” It is a tribute to our facility and environmental staff. It is the cleanest kitchen they have ever seen in any facility visited.

“During many group interviews (data management, environment of care, leadership) staff, physicians, and leaders are very engaged.”

On rounds in departments, they were impressed with the level of knowledge, professionalism and passion.

Tony and I are grateful that we have such committed, and creative staff, leaders and physicians. We know how committed you are to service and improving care to our patients. As leaders it’s rewarding for us to hear from people who do not know you, what we’ve always known.

LISA AZZARITO PEPINO - RRT, RN/Cardio Pulmonary, Clinical Nurse II In addition to her Smoking Cessation Program, which shows good outcomes due to the consistent support and education of her clients, this year, Lisa sought competency in EEG testing. She agreed to this to improve the efficiency of the department. Lisa also presented her skill and strategies she uses to get outcomes in Smoking Cessation at a Regional AACVPR Conference. She prepared by presenting her information to Cardiac Rehab Nurses and a Workshop Wednesday. It gave her confidence and her presentation was a success.

ELLEN BECKWITH - RN/2MS, Clinical Nurse III As a result of a fall resulting in injury, Ellen was part of the Root Cause Team. As a result, she participated in enacting the action plan which included purchasing safer chairs for patients and in educating staff on the Modified Hendrix II Protocol. The request went out for Super User Training for Expanse. This became her second major project for her ladder. Ellen completed Super User training participated in Parallel Testing and Go-Live. This meant we would be using a new Fall Assessment in the process. She worked with Education to ensure policy interventions and scores would work at Fairview as we went live with the Morse Fall Assessment. Education on both Fall Assessment and the Super user role were major projects for her ladder.

JENNIFER BRAGDON – RN/Emergency Department, Clinical Nurse III Jennifer’s project was to implement the Pause in the E. D. She developed a script to be placed on the code carts. She collaborated with the Nurses implementing in CCU. A Power Point for education of staff, a death resource book for the ED and a special box were all implemented. Jen as a death doula brought expertise to this project. JO ANN BUFFONI – RN/2MS, Clinical Nurse III Jo Ann pursued 2 projects. She did a survey of staff related to what they thought was important to provide for basic care. Armed with that information she created a “Back to Basics” program for staff. She created a power point set to music and an interactive video. She reviewed each policy, had staff demonstrate competency by listing “What’s Wrong With This Picture?” She created scenarios of “What’s the Right Thing To Do?” Jo Ann was a major builder of the Expanse programs. She worked at the command center, wrote “Tips of the day” and supported people one on one!

BRYN DAVIS - RN/Family Birth Place, Clinical Nurse III Bryn’s project focused on Newborn Fall Prevention. The Joint Commission published a sentinel event alert on Newborn Falls. Bryn worked on this for over a year. In this project she developed a clear Newborn Fall Prevention Policy that included “Safe Sleep” education, a newborn “Safety Pledge”, a new Fall Risk Assessment Tool geared toward the “mother-infant” dyad, a Fall Response Algorithm and a Post Fall Debriefing Tool. She developed a Power Point Education to educate all nurses on her unit.

COLLEEN FERNBACHER -RN/2MS Educator , Clinical Nurse III Colleen’s project was on Civility. In her research, she found an article on a project measuring the effect of an Evidence based Training Program on Nursing Workplace Incivility in a rural hospital. She has replicated some of that project at Fairview. She developed and collated a survey of staff on civility. She did workshops on civility at Fairview , in addition to sharing the survey results. The results demonstrated new employees did not feel welcomed. She reinstituted, in monthly broadcasts, new employees pictures and has Wendy Dottavio giving new employees hospital tours again. She will resurvey staff again in 2020.

LEE ANN FLEMING HAND - RN/CCU, Education, Clinical Nurse III Lee Ann worked with a colleague in CCU and in the emergency department to implement the pause. She developed a pause script and a death reference book for the CCU staff, and facilitated the development of patient and family comfort baskets. A script was placed on every code cart. The death reference book outlines the instructions for what needs to be done and what documentation needs to be completed. It includes a worksheet of steps to facilitate what the nurse needs to do. There are reference lists of grief support, churches, clergy, musical support and funeral homes. She created a patient and family care basket. The auxiliary (after a presentation) agreed to support the cost for items needed; Ex. Battery operated candles, lavender hand lotion, rose quartz angels and worry stone. Volunteers made small blankets for the patients and families to take after the patient passed. She made sympathy cards from the CCU staff and quotes about grief. She spoke with different religious affiliations and obtained a bible in Spanish and one from the Jehovah’s Witness.

EMILY MAGENIS - RN/Cardio Pulmonary, Clinical Nurse II Emily works in the Cardiac Rehab Program. One of the outcomes for patients enrolled in Phase II Monitoring Cardiac Rehab is to improve in functional capacity. The goal is to have a 10% improvement in distance walking over a 6 minute time frame. Emily focused on optimizing the patient heart health post rehab. She reached out to current and former rehab patients to participate in the Monster Dash. She had strong participation from the Phase III monitoring patients. She included perceived barriers of patients who did not participate. She would like to find alternatives to the cost and provide options for the distance. She will work on the Monster Dash again in 2020. PAUL MIHLEK – RN/Critical Care Unit, Clinical Nurse III Paul’s project focused on noise reduction. He did major literature search on noise reduction. He presented a formal proposal to Fairview’s Leadership which included staff education on reducing noise in the hospital. He suggested some tools. The proposal included a “Quiet Kit” to be given to every admitted patient. Fairview installed the Sonicu Sound Management System. It has made a difference in noise levels especially at night. We hope to see improvement in our future Press Ganey Results . DAWN SCARBRO– RN/Critical Care, Clinical Nurse III Dawn worked on a project with another colleague in CCU and with a colleague in the Emergency Department. After reading an article from the Cleveland Clinic, she implemented “The Pause”. It is described as taking a moment after the passing of a patient to reflect on that moment. Her project involved education of all staff in CCU, developing a script. A basket was implemented to go with the comfort care from food services with items families can use with their loved one during this end stage. 17

Despite the unforeseen circumstances of COVID-19, we were still able to celebrate our Annual Exemplar Nominees and Winners. Here at Fairview, the SHOW MUST GO ON and this year’s show ranked higher than any other!

The Recreation Association, along with the help of many other Fairview employees, was able to put together a stunning, unforgettable event at the hospital called “Fairview Stars-Hollywood on the Hill.” We were able to recognize both nominees and winners of the Exemplar awards, we congratulated employees celebrating a Milestone, and we also formally thanked the Meditech Expanse Team for their successes and many months of work.

This event brought great delight, while unveiling incredible creativity and resilience from Fairview employees during unprecedented times. It surely will be remembered for years to come.
