How to saddle a horse safely Horses are magnificent animals and loyal companions who can successfully handle their share of the workload in various capacities. Learning how to properly saddle a horse is essential for anyone who hopes to ride regularly.

The techniques discussed here apply to western saddling, which is the primary way many people saddle their horses for riding. British riding requires different saddling and equipment.

One of the first steps is to make sure the horse is clean and comfortable. Remember to always approach the animal from an angle at which he can see you clearly, so there are no surprises.

All dirt, dust and loose hair should be removed from the horse through brushing, with particular attention paid to the areas where the saddle will sit and where the cinches and breast collar will cover.

It’s best to properly tie the horse with a halter and lead rope, which can be held by an assistant or ground-tied. This prevents the horse from moving around too much.

Brush off the underside of the saddle pad or blanket to ensure there are no sharp objects or irritants stuck in the fibers, which can make the horse uncomfortable. In such situations, the horse may try to shake to relieve the discomfort, tossing riders off in the process.

Move the front cinch, back cinch and breast collar of the saddle onto the seat of the saddle to keep them out of the way while you put the saddle in place on the horse. This ensures that the equipment doesn’t slide and spook the horse. Many riders mount and dismount their horses from the left side, so push the items to the right to keep them situated. Then adjust the girth cinches and stirrups accordingly.

After the saddle is in place, step back and look things over. Make sure everything is properly tightened before riding.

By saddling a horse safely and correctly, riders can prevent injuries resulting from restless horses or loose saddles. Novice riders should practice to get a feel for saddling.

LAPTOP COMPUTER STUDENT ORIENTATION All students of Lead-Deadwood High School will be issued a computer for school use. Before a returning student in grades 10-12 may be issued a computer, they must turn in the Lead Deadwood school district computer Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) signed by both the student and parent/guardian. This form can be found on the school website or picked up in the high school office.

New students and 9th grade students and their parent/guardian must attend an orientation meeting outlining the technical aspects, program policies, acceptable use, and guidelines for use of the computer and complete all required documentation. This will be done in conjunction with the new student and 9th grade orientation August 29th at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH AVAILABLE AT ALL SITES EVERY SCHOOL DAY Breakfast is available from 7:45 a.m.-8:15 a.m.. Students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch also qualify for free or reduced price breakfast. Breakfast is a very important part of a child’s development and ability to learn. Students may bring sack lunches. A Point of Sale (POS) software system is used for the school breakfast/lunch program. Each student will have his/her own individual student account. If sending cash or check with a student, place in a sealed envelope, along with the students name and account number. We are not responsible for lost, unidentified, or stolen cash/checks.

Deposits will be collected before school starts each day.

Students are encouraged to keep a running balance in their account. When an account balance is low, students receive a reminder. The Lead-Deadwood School District encourages you to use EZSchoolPay to monitor your child’s meal account.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS MOST SERIOUS SCHOOL BUS INCIDENTS OCCUR WHEN CHILDREN ARE OUTSIDE THE BUS, AND 75% OF THESE INCIDENTS INVOLVE CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF NINE.

Make sure your children know and follow these rules: • Be on time for the bus • Never run to or from the bus • Be alert and stand back from the curb • Don’t push or shove • Stay in your seat • Don’t yell or shout • Always obey the driver • Wait for the driver’s signal before crossing • Always cross at least 12 feet in front of the bus • Never crawl under a school bus

Meet the bus. Coordinate with other parents to ensure an adult is present at the bus stop every day, especially when children under the age of nine are present.

Avoid using gadgets near buses. Headphones, cell phones, MP3 players all distract our kids from knowing when a bus is approaching. Urge your kids to wait to use them when they’re a safe distance from the bus.

Remove drawstings. Clothing your children like may not always be safe. Drawstrings can catch in playground equipment, fences, school bus doors and escalators.

Remove, shorten or replace drawstrings with another kind of fastener.

Coaches of fall sports (volleyball, football, cross-country, boys’ golf, soccer, girls’ tennis and dance) will meet with students and parents following the general meeting. MIDDLE SCHOOL FALL ACTIVITIES MEETING

The middle school will be combining their fall sports meeting with the high school on Sunday, August 14th. Beginning at 5:00 PM the Booster Club will begin serving hamburgers and have membership information available. The general meeting will take place at 6:00 PM in the high school auditorium. Following the conclusion of this meeting all middle school students and parents will meet in the middle school gym to meet with their coaches. The activities that will be covered for the middle school will be 7th & 8th grade football, 7th & 8th grade volleyball, and 6th, 7th, & 8th Cross Country.

Impact testing dates, eligibility, and activity expectations will be covered in this meeting.

ADMITTANCE TO BUILDINGS

Children should not be on the school grounds before 8 a.m. unless they arrive on an early bus. No playground supervision is provided before 8 a.m. Students arriving early by special request of a teacher will report directly to the teacher for study. Normal school hours will be from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. with minor deviations per school and bus scheduling.

IMMUNIZATIONS

All kindergarten through 12th grade students are required to have received South Dakota (SDCL 13-28-7.1) required immunizations before entering school. The SD Department of Health administrative rule now requires both the Tdap and MCV4 vaccines for 6th grade students beginning with the 2016-17 school year. All kindergarten students are also required to have the chicken pox vaccination (two doses) or have a reliable history of the disease.

TB tests are no longer required.

Notification of Parental Rights and Every Student Succeeds Act 1. Parents may inspect and review the education records of each student.

2. Parents may request the amendment of the student’s education records to insure they are not inaccurate, misleading or otherwise in violation of the privacy or other rights of student.

3. Parents must consent to disclose of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that the law authorizes disclosure without consent.

4. Parents may file with the United States Department of Education any complaint concerning alleged failures by Spearfish Schools to comply with requirements of the law.

Elementary Schools: Elementary school supply lists are available at local stores.

Secondary Schools: Most students in grades 7 - 12 will have expenses for special items in classes such as: industrial arts, music, etc. Dues for organizations will be voted on by the members and set at that time.

Any willful destruction of school materials, books or property will be billed by the administrative office to the parents of the student involved.

STUDENT INSURANCE

The school does not assume financial responsibility for accidents which may occur. Student accident insurance and dental accident insurance is available with a company offering these services. Forms for enrollment will be sent home with students the first week of school. Students involved in football must have accident insurance, either the school’s or any policy their parents may already have, before they can check in for football practice. The policy must be listed with the football coach and the principal’s office.

5. Parents have the right to obtain the school board policy of the school district relating to student records.

6. Parents may request assistance in or the District will provide you with the following information: • analyzing results from required assessments; identifying and addressing curriculum and instructional problems • addressing problems using parent involvement and professional development requirements • analyzing the school’s budget and resources • identifying and implementing professional development and instructional strategies that have proven effective in improving students’ math and reading achievement • notification if your child is attending a school that has been identified as a school in need of improvement
