Cookies with the Kids

Cooking is a holiday tradition that should be enjoyed by people of all ages — even the kids. And depending on the age of your children, there are plenty of cooking activities to which they can lend a hand this year.

All it takes to get them involved is some clean hands and plenty of patience on your part.

You can assign different tasks to your children depending on their age. This will help keep them organized and focused on their own specific roles.

It also will ensure that the appropriate jobs are being handled by the appropriately aged children. Mixing and beating, for example is probably not a job for your 2-year-old toddler, while adding sprinkles to cookies may very well be.

Here are some ideas of how you can involve your children in the cooking process, depending on if they’re younger (ages 2 to 5) or older (ages 6 and above).

Younger Children

Youngsters love cracking eggs.

And as long as you’re there to supervise to make sure they’re not ingesting them, this can be a fun, educational experience for your toddler.

You also can enlist your youngest children to pour ingredients into a mixing bowl after you have measured them out.

The most fun step for children of any age may be frosting the desserts, so step back and let them have a little fun.

Other roles can include: • Rolling cookie dough into balls; • Flattening the cookie dough balls with their fingers; • Rolling balls of cookie dough in sugar; and • Transferring cookie balls onto a baking sheet.

Older Children

If you trust your older children to use hand-held electric mixers, they can help you take care of this step while you combine other ingredients.

You may want to step in when the time comes to add messy items such as flour, sugar or softened cream cheese.

Here are some other roles that are perfect for the grade-schooler: • Stir in chocolate chips, raisins or other ingredients; • Cut out cookie shapes from the rolled dough; • Unwrap and press chocolate kisses into the tops of cookies; • Frost and decorate cookies by themselves; • Dip cookies in melted chocolate or drizzle the chocolate over the cookies; and • Pipe frosting features on gingerbread men and other desserts.

The History Behind Some Beloved Christmas Songs

Holiday traditions vary from family to family, but one component of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Music is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a h digital music service as families decorate their homes. o Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, there’s n no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring there’s something for r everyone.

In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were r:digitized. The following are some

of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song.

• “Silent Night”: One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), “Silent Night,” was composed in 1818

by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria.

Today’s version is a slow lullaby, but it’s believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time.

• “O Holy Night”: This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, “Minuit, chrétiens (Midnight, Christians).” Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Céline Dion, Josh Groban, Michael Crawford, and Lea Michele, have performed “O Holy Night.”

• “Silver Bells”: Now a

Christmas classic, “Silver Bells” originally was written for the Bob Hope film, “The Lemon Drop Kid.” Songwriter Jay Livingston wanted to title the song “Tinkle Bell,” but his wife dissuaded him from using the word “tinkle.”

• “White Christmas”: Irving Berlin believed his song “White Christmas” would be an instant hit. His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it.

• “Jingle Bells”: Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, “Jingle Bells” really was written for Thanksgiving. It’s also one of the oldest holiday songs of American origin. James Lord Pierpont, the song’s author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachusetts.

• “Do You Hear What I Hear”: Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the

Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten, and “Do You Hear What I Hear” is now a staple of holiday celebrations.

• “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”: James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother. It became a hit after being performed at the famed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

• “The Christmas Song”: This classic Christmas song was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé. It’s usually subtitled “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” The song was written during a heat wave as a way to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Cole’s rendition of the song is among the more popular versions.

church choir. Fill out the rest of the carolers with volunteers who have moderate to strong singing abilities. Of course, you can accept anyone, as it’s more about sharing the joy rather than having a pitch-perfect group.

• Choose a neighborhood to visit. Select an established neighborhood where there are likely to be many families and even seniors who will be most receptive to carolers. Place fliers in the mailboxes alerting residents of your caroling plans for those who want to be home to enjoy the free show.

• Promote your plans if you want a larger crowd. If you want to make the caroling a big event, promote your plans in the local newspaper or in a community bulletin. This way everyone in the community can take in the caroling show.

• Choose a handful of wellknown songs to sing. Your

audience will appreciate easily recognizable songs they can sing along with if they choose.

• Print lyric sheets. Although the lyrics to popular songs are widely known, it helps to have them handy if carolers forget verses. Keep extra copies on hand in case others want to join the caroling group.

• Get a sponsor. If you live in a rural area and caroling doorto-door is impractical, see if a local retailer will let you carol outside of his or her store or business. Doing so can set the holiday mood and may generate free advertising and increased business for sponsors.

• Involve youth groups. Kids love the holiday, so including them in your caroling efforts can bring smiles to many faces.

Speak with local youth groups to determine if their members may want to join in your efforts to spread holiday cheer.

Bring Old-Fashioned Christmas Caroling to Your Neighborhood

Christmas carols help set the mood for the holiday season.

Such songs are played in stores to create festive atmospheres for shoppers, and many families play seasonal music as they decorate their homes for the holidays.

Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago during Winter Solstice celebrations. When Christian holidays replaced many of the pagan celebrations, Christian holiday carols replaced the earlier songs.

Before Christmas carols were sung by the general public, they were enjoyed during church services, when they sometimes were performed by official carol singers. However, new carols became popular during

the Victorian era, when many ordinary people took to the streets to share holiday joy with others through the gift of song.

Wassail, a thick, hot and spiced beverage, often kept carolers warm, and soon wassailing and caroling became intertwined.

Although carols and other songs are still popular forms of entertainment at school concerts and some religious group events, the classic tradition of carolers going door-to-door has largely fallen by the wayside. But those who want to bring back this once beloved tradition can take the following steps to do just that.

• Find a caroling group leader.

It helps to have someone who has a sense of musicality and pitch to lead the caroling. Carols are usually sung a capella, so you’ll need a strong singer to guide others and keep them in tune. Recruit a theater or music student or even a member of your

The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season.

• Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

• Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale

that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number.

Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

• Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents.

• Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0.

• The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language.

It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

• Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

There are numerous end-ofyear holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve are celebrated this time of year, but there’s another holiday that’s celebrated in December. Each December 23, legions of “Seinfeld” fans and many others who are familiar with the popular series pay hommage to “A Festivus for the Rest of Us.” This contrived, alternative holiday was a plot line developed for the beloved Costanza family on the series and was billed as Frank Costanza’s creation. Festivus debuted on December 18, 1997, on the episode, “The Strike.”

Instead of a tree, candles or carols, Festivus celebrations involve a metal pole, the airing of grievances and feats of strength. Many believe Festivus was simply a television creation, but the holiday is loosely rooted in fact. Daniel O’Keefe, a former writer for “Seinfeld,” reluctantly admitted that his

father, Dan, actually invented Festivus in 1966. O’Keefe told CNN that his little brother let the Festivus traditions slip out, and other writers for the show, including Jerry Seinfeld, felt it would make for a great episode, particularly because the holiday wasn’t beholden to anything political or religious.

That was the reason O’Keefe’s father developed it in the first place. The real Festivus had few similarities to the TV version.

While there was an airing of grievances, the pole and feats of strength were absent. In addition, Festivus would be celebrated any time between October and May. O’Keefe has written that his father would also nail a bag containing a clock to the wall each year, but he doesn’t know why his father did this. Since 1997, the holiday has become a worldwide celebration, with people gathering around their own metal poles in late December every year.

Winter Safety Humans aren’t the only ones affected by the bone-chilling temperatures and heavy snowfall that often accompanies winter. Our pets are equally impacted and require some special preventive care in the wintertime.

Frostbite, falls and hypothermia should all be real concerns for pet owners, especially for those living in colder parts of the country.

Fortunately, with a little common sense and attention to detail, you will be able to protect your pets from the dangers of winter.

GIVE THEM SHELTER It’s obviously best to keep pets inside during the winter months. Just because pets have fur doesn’t mean they’re not cold when the temperatures drop. No pets should be left outside for long periods of time in belowfreezing weather.

If you are unable to keep your dog inside during cold weather, provide warm, solid shelter that protects against biting winds.

Also provide plenty of fresh, non-frozen water to keep your pet hydrated. Use thick, dry bedding for a comfortable area for your pet to sleep.

CHECK THE PAWS Your pet’s paws can become cracked or bloody if exposed to frigid winter conditions.

Check your dog’s paws frequently for signs of injury. Watch how he or she walks and look for any sudden lameness or painful strides.

If you take your dog on a walk in conditions that have recently been snowy or icy, you may be exposing your pet’s paws to deicers, antifreeze or other chemicals that could be toxic at high levels. After your walk, always wash or wipe down your pet’s feet, belly and legs to remove these types of fluids.

COLLAR AND CHIP Many pets get lost in the wintertime because snow and ice can make it harder for them to find their way home. That’s because these conditions can mask recognizable scents that a pet uses to navigate around your land or neighborhood.

This underscores the importance of always using a well-fitting collar that contains updated identification and contact information.

Your veterinarian likely offers microchip services that provides a permanent form of identification if you keep the registration up to date. Check with your veterinarian to discuss your options.

Pets of the Week Buddy

Buddy is an easy going senior dog who loves to go on walks and get into the water. Car rides to the dog park are right up his alley, before heading home to curl up in your lap! He has a good history with other dogs, but would do best in a home with no cats. He has never lived with small children, so his behaviors towards them are yet to be determined.

Squeaks

Squeaks is a male pit bull with lots of fun energy. He is about 2 years old and seems like he would get along with other dogs and cats. Squeaks loves to play tug, and if you pull out a leash he will happily take himself for a walk! Although he needs some basic obedience, he is eager to please and would be easy to train.

Champagne

Champagne is a 6-year-old, neutered male, who simply loves to hang out. He thrives on affection and will give you kisses in return. He has a great history of living with other animals and is litter box trained!

Spunky

Spunky is a longhaired, midnightblack kitten that has lived several lives already. A bit worried about things when she was brought in as a barn cat, she’s been living with other cats and having a ball socializing and learning about life inside with caring humans.

She appears to like what she’s learned so far and would make someone a great kitty. She’s cute as a button and ready to go to a real home.
