Charlottesville In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western Central Virginia, the City of Charlottesville is home to a population of over 40,000 residents with a metropolitan population over 200,000. The City has earned a reputation as being one of the most livable places in the country. Named one of “America’s Best Intergenerational Communities” by Met Life & Generations United 2012, the city prides itself on livability for all stages of life. The city was also recently awarded “Amercia’s Smartest City,” by Lumosity the best Small Community City for Overall Well-Being -Gallup 2012, and one of the Best Small Cities For Working Women (#4) by nerdwallet.com 2013. A city deep in historic value, three Presidents claim roots here. In addition, the city is the home of the University of Virginia founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1825. With a growing enrollment of nearly 24,000, the University is reliably listed as one of the top five public universities in the country. In 2007, the area’s emphasis on historic preservation alongside modern development has earned the recognition by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Dozen Distinctive Destination. L I FE I N CENTR A L V I R G I N I A Shenandoah Valley The Augusta County region is also centrally located, bordered on the east by the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the west by the Allegheny Mountains. Augusta County claims the headwaters of both the James and the Potomac Rivers. Formed in 1738, Augusta County was known as the “Mother of Counties,” because of its large size. The village of Teesvllle, founded In 1736, was renamed Waynesboro in 1797. The city of Staunton, which in 1856 became the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, was incorporated in 1801. The city of Harrisonburg began in 1779 when a local farmer, Thomas Harrison, donated a small parcel of land for a courthouse. During the Civil War, Stonewall Jackson used Harrisonburg as one of his headquarters.
Northern Piedmont Region As one of the northernmost counties of Virginia, Rappahannock County puts residents within easy commuting distance of Washington, D.C., but feels worlds away. Most of the western border of the county is Shenandoah National Park, and the county opens east over miles of rolling hills, winding streams, historic villages, and farmland. The county seat is the town of Washington, which was surveyed by George Washington himself in 1749, and is currently home to The Inn at Little Washington, a world-renowned restaurant.

Tourism, technology, manufacturing, education, food processing, health care, retail, textiles. construction, agriculture and service industries provide both opportunity and prosperity. The Thomas Jefferson Planning District, the Thomas Jefferson Partnership for Economic Development, and the Central Shenandoah Regional Planning District Commission provide vital planning, statistical, and development services.

Education Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) Weyers Cave, VA www.brcc.edu Blue Ridge Community College opened its main campus in Weyers Cave in 1967 and now has satellite locations in Harrisonburg and Fishersville. Today it is one of the most technologically sophisticated colleges in the Virginia Community College System providing Associate in Applied Science and Associate in Science and Arts degrees to the 18,000 participating students. BRCC actively partners with local industry to provide training through non-credit and special customized classes. Through a partnership with Old Dominion University Teletechnet distance learning program, students can earn Bachelors or Masters degrees in more than 19 areas. James Madison University (JMU) Harrisonburg, VA www.jmu.edu The Virginia General Assembly established James Madison University In 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. Today, JMU is a coeducational and comprehensive University with nearly 21,000 students. JMU offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level.

PVCC provides the first two years of baccalaureate study for students who wish to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. UVA is highly competitive and selects students from the top of their graduating classes.
