Volunteer spotlight

Having been a patient of Barwon Health’s cancer services, a patient ambassador, Dry July champion and host of countless fundraisers, Kylie continues to give back to the health service that helped her following her 2017 diagnosis. Thank you to Kylie and all of the other volunteers who make Barwon Gifts possible.

Local business gives the gift of time

In 2023, we are thrilled to welcome back volunteers to our Barwon Gifts team. Located on Level 3 at University Hospital Geelong, the gift shop is open Monday to Friday with 100% of profits supporting patient comfort and care at Barwon Health.

This would not be possible without the volunteers who donate their time to work at the shop each day. One of those people is Kylie Blackney.

Another volunteer with endless energy and enthusiasm to make a difference is Libby Bate who won the Viva Energy Community Legend Award in October. As the passionate leader of Cancer After Care since 2009, Libby has had an immeasurable impact on the lives and health of residents across the region. Geelong cancer patients have better care, closer to home, thanks to her fundraising efforts and advocacy. We were honoured when she asked to direct her $13,000 prize money to Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre. We couldn’t think of a more worthy winner. Congratulations Libby.

Breakwater Kitchens have long been supporters of our annual June Giving Weekend and we love their approach to giving back! The business registers all of its staff to participate in the traditional tin shake as a team bonding activity with a side of healthy competition. In 2022 they provided 18 volunteers which were split into two groups manning intersections on the opposite sides of town and collectively added over $4,000 to our Giving Weekend tally. In the end there was only $54.10 separating the winning and losing teams but the ultimate winner was our local health service. If you’re not in position to contribute financially, donating your time is a fantastic way to support Barwon Health.
