From Zoe

HELLO!

Welcome to the 2023 edition of The Gift – Barwon Health Foundation’s annual magazine.

These pages are a celebration of just some of our fundraising achievements over the past 12 months – none of which would have been possible without the Greater Geelong community.

In 2022, we were overjoyed to see a number of our much-loved events return in-person for the first time since 2019 including Catwalk4Cancer, Run4Geelong and the Gala Christmas festivities.

Incredibly, there were some fundraising records broken along the way by the likes of local Dry July participants and the Geelong Building and Construction Industry.

We are endlessly grateful for the individuals and community groups that fundraise on our behalf, those who produce handmade items to enhance patient comfort, and the local schools that inspire the next generation of philanthropists by instilling a culture of giving back.

Inside this magazine you will also find an update on our Project North appeal and an exclusive first-look at the single biggest fundraising activity in our charity’s 21 year history – the House4Health Charity Auction.

We hope you feel inspired by the people among these pages who share our vision for a healthier, happier Greater Geelong and are motivated to join, or continue on, this mission with us.

Built with love

The Project

Barwon Health Foundation is calling on Geelong’s generous building industry to be a part of the single biggest fundraising activity in its proud 21-year history, with all proceeds helping to support the health of our local community.

With land donated by Lara Lakes Estate and help from Hamlan Homes and their suppliers, we are going to build and auction a residential house in Lara with the sole purpose of raising funds for our health service. This exciting campaign will culminate in a family fun day at the auction in the second half of the year.

How It Started

One industry leader that believed in the vision from the very beginning was Lara Lakes Estate.

Immediately upon learning of the Foundation’s desire to host a charity house auction, the project was kick-started by the donation of a block of land from Lara Lakes Estate. Modelled on the national-award winning Grand Lakes Estate, Lara Lakes is located at the top of the Lara West Growth Area, bordering the existing township. The House4Health property is located on O'Halloran’s Rd, neighbouring soon-to-be-built display homes to ensure maximum exposure for the project and marketing opportunities for its supporters. This initial generous contribution got the Barwon Health Foundation one giant step closer to achieving its ultimate dream.

Our Goal

So, what is the dream?

The Barwon Health Foundation’s goal is to get the project’s costs – through discounts and donations of goods and services, as well as major philanthropist support - as close to neutral as possible. The House4Health Building Partner, Hamlan Homes will lead the construction of the spacious four-bedroom, two-living Johanna 257 design - which was selected in consultation with Real Estate Partner, Ray White Lara, to ensure maximum appeal for buyers in the area. With the generous support of local businesses and individuals donating or discounting time, materials and skills, we hope we can tell the future homebuyer on auction day that 100% of the sale price will be donated to the cause.

Last year saw the launch of Project North – our $2.5 million appeal to support healthier futures for residents in the northern suburbs of Geelong.

We were heartened by the support of every single individual, business owner and community group that connected with this cause from the beginning.

We are proud and grateful to witness the collective culture of giving back and the passion Geelong residents have for looking after their own.

In 2023, we hope to harness and grow that momentum to achieve lifeenhancing results.

Our ambitious goal is that by the end of the year we have met the fundraising target and delivered a new, expanded home for the public dental service currently operating from Corio Community Health.

The impacts of this will be significant and wide-reaching.

Our current appeal

Often dental care is mistakenly considered simply cosmetic; however, poor oral health is associated with many major causes of illness and death including lung and oral cancers, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, dental conditions were the highest cause of all potentially preventable hospitalisation in Victorian children under 9 in 2018.

Demand for dental services in the north have been steadily increasing with population growth but infrastructure conditions prevent the needed expansion.

If patients are made to wait too long for an appointment, warning signs can be missed and opportunities for preventative measures, early intervention and education are reduced.

The move to Barwon Health North will make it possible for up to an additional 5,000 people to receive dental care each year.

Importantly, co-locating this service with services already available at Barwon Health North; (urgent care, renal dialysis, imaging), and child and family health services will allow for ease of referrals and create a one-stop-shop for locals.

Ultimately, it will take us another step closer to closing a health gap that exists in our region.

If you believe all members of our community, regardless of where they live, nationality or economic status, enjoy the very best health and wellbeing possible – donate today so we can commence construction as soon as possible.

Powerful Pledge

The Rotary Club of Geelong West has pledged to raise $100,000 in support of the Project North appeal – and it’s already half way.

Most of the funds have been generated by two of the Club’s biannual Book Fair events at Geelong West Town Hall, which raised upwards of $25,000 each.

President Jim Marendaz said the volunteer based organisation, which exists to give back to the local community, shared the vision to improve access to health care in the northern suburbs of Geelong.

The funding commitment is the largest by the Club since the local branch was founded in 1955.

“Rotary is a network of passionate problem solvers who unite to create lasting change in our community,” Mr Marendaz said.

“We, like the Barwon Health Foundation, have identified that more can be done to provide better access to healthcare for those living in the northern suburbs of Geelong and we look forward to partnering on this important goal.”

The Foundation has a long and proud association with Rotary and we know there is a huge amount of volunteer time and passion that goes into raising such a significant amount.

The Club’s next Book Fair is August 4-6.

Geelong’s generous building and construction industry

For a third consecutive year, the Geelong Building and Construction Industry united to raise funds so that local sick kids can get the care they need close to home.

The group’s combined generosity resulted in a $110,000 donation to the 2022 Wish Upon A Star Christmas Appeal.

The collective, which comprises members of the CFMEU, the ETU, the PPTEU, builders, and local and non-local subcontractors, generated majority of the funds at an industry Night of Night’s event held at GMBHA Stadium in August.

The coordinated support of the Barwon Health Foundation began in 2020 when the union’s annual Christmas picnic was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, prompting the members to find another way to spread festive cheer.

The industry’s passion for the cause has continued to drive the dollar figure up, growing the donation amount from $50,000 in 2020 to $100,000 in 2021 and $110,000 in 2022.

This means that since the partnership began, they have contributed more than a quarter of a million dollars to enhance the care and comfort families experience when accessing Barwon Health.

We thank the industry for its passion and leadership on the issue of improving local kids’ health.

A flair for fundraising

There are many ways for individuals to help us improve the health of our community beyond making a monetary donation of their own. One of these include conducting their own fundraiser.

While a traditional event format often springs to mind, it doesn’t have to be that labour intensive – in fact many don’t realise they can turn a fitness challenge, or even a milestone personal event, into a fundraiser for a cause close to their heart.

For example, if you’re thinking of signing up for your first marathon, you could ask people to sponsor you and help raise funds to purchase a particular piece of equipment.

Similarly, if you don’t wish to receive presents for your upcoming birthday or wedding, you could ask for donations to the charity of your choice instead.

A few incredible individuals who asked their networks to help them fundraise for Barwon Health Foundation in 2022 were:

Kylie Blackney

Friend of the Foundation Kylie Blackney, spent October raising funds for Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre.

Each year she comes up with a new way to fundraise during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in 2022 it was a “don’t throw ya cash in the trash” market.

Kylie asked family and friends to donate items for the market, which raised a fabulous $3,500 to improve cancer patient comfort and care.

Rebecca Share

Talented milliner Rebecca Share auctioned off her custom Geelong Cup 2022 headwear so the funds could be donated to Barwon Health.

Rebecca, who has made millinery for Australia’s best-known celebrities as well as designs for J.Lo’s World Tour, handcrafted the incredible headpiece at 3am on the morning of the race and documented the creative journey via social media.

After 40 fierce bids, one lucky fashion lover secured the perfect one-of-a-kind accessory and helped support the health of Greater Geelong and beyond at the same time.

Tom Langman

In 2022, we were incredibly grateful to be the beneficiary of a head shaving fundraiser by Barwon Health physiotherapist, Tom.

Tom decided to raise money to help improve the comfort and care of local cancer patients following his sister Hannah’s Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia diagnosis at the age of 30.

She was fit, active, and in the middle of planning her wedding when she learnt the news.

Although Hannah is undergoing treatment in Sydney, Tom decided to raise funds to help people going through the same journey within Barwon Health Cancer Services.

Tom initially set out to raise $5,000 and with overwhelming community support was able to generate $9,875 which has since been used to purchase a specialised chemotherapy chair.

Raising a glass to record breaking fundraising

In 2022 we celebrated our most successful Dry July ever, generating more than $200,000 for Barwon Health cancer services.

Our very own Dry July ambassador, Billy Brownless, led his ‘Frothy Fund’ team to back-to-back victories, finishing as the top fundraising team in Australia for a second consecutive year with $100,000 raised.

Community ambassador and Foundation board member Rory Costelloe also defended his position as one of the country’s leading individual fundraisers clocking up an impressive $48,200.

The region’s stronghold on the national campaign didn’t stop there, however, with a group of Geelong United Basketball presidents securing third place on the team fundraising ladder by generating $32,900 and Buxton Geelong’s Ben Riddle finishing in the top 10 solo fundraisers with an impressive $19,200 raised.

A total of 238 people – including community and business leaders, past patients and those fundraising in honour of loved ones lost to the disease - gave up alcohol for the month of July to fundraise for Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre.

Brownless, whose mother died of cancer, said he was proud to lead a team of likeminded individuals for a worthy cause.

“As a pub owner, Dry July is not always an easy month for me but I loved seeing the growing fundraising tally every day,” he said.

“The community’s generosity blew me away all over again – my ‘Frothy Fund’ team bet the 2021 record by more than $19,000 which is just an amazing result for Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre and all the patients it supports so thank you to everyone who contributed.”

The Foundation is proud to have raised over $1 million through Dry July since 2012, all in the name of enhancing cancer patient comfort, care and wellbeing.

Gifts for Good

Have you ever struggled with finding a thoughtful, memorable gift for someone?

Perhaps someone who has plenty of material things and loves doing good for others? Or maybe that someone who likes to do good in our community is you.

Barwon Health Foundation’s Gifts for Good allows you to pay it forward – on your own, or on behalf of others - by purchasing a gift for an individual or family in need.

Purchase a ‘gift’ from our online shop and we will send you a card (or digital print out) to give to that special someone, explaining the generosity you have extended to a stranger in their honour.

Whether you are looking for a Birthday, Christmas or corporate present - give the gift of good health. Whatever the occasion, it will not only make the recipient smile, it will also ease the burden on a Greater Geelong resident experiencing a difficult time.

Gift options:

A personal hygiene pack for at-risk youth - $35

You could keep a family together by funding a night’s accommodation for a parent to stay close to a child spending time in hospital.

A sanitary pack for a new mother - $45

Help a new mum in need by funding a pack that could provide all of the post-birth essentials we take for granted that many don’t have access to.

An Andrew Love Cancer Centre Care Pack - $49

Gift a care pack to a patient receiving treatment at Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre and help to brighten their day.

A night’s accommodation for a parent - $150

You could keep a family together by funding a night’s accommodation for a parent to stay close to a child spending time in hospital.

Helping Geelong and beyond

While the majority of Barwon Health’s 26 sites are located in Greater Geelong and the Surf Coast, the health service cares for people from Little River, to the South Australian border and everywhere in between.

In 2022, we were grateful to receive a substantial donation from a philanthropic local couple to kick-start an Emergency Accommodation Fund for those accessing the health service who are in need. Since its inception, the Foundation has worked closely with Barwon Health’s social work team to ensure that this assistance is offered to individuals, couples or families in need for a variety of reasons. One example of this was on December 23rd when a Warrnambool woman began to feel unwell while enjoying Christmas celebrations with friends.

Upon returning home she began to vomiting, unknowingly experiencing a heart attack and was transported to University Hospital Geelong via ambulance. The social work team contacted the patient’s worried husband, who had travelled to be by her side, about accessing the Emergency Accommodation to ease the unexpected financial burden they now had at an already expensive time of year. This ensured the husband could stay nearby to support his wife and ultimately spend Christmas Day with her in hospital. The couple was so grateful for the above and beyond care they phoned the Foundation office on the first day it re-opened for the new year to ‘pay it forward’ by making a small donation to the Fund they had accessed.

We are grateful to donors who make this above and beyond care possible.

Meet the Makers

Over at Bendigo Bank House, Annette and Kim delivered 50 handmade quilts to help bring kids on a journey of recovery in the McKellar Kids’ Rehab service some comfort.

The quilting began four years ago when the pair learnt of our $3.6 million Kids Appeal for a dedicated kids rehab facility through their workplace, Bendigo Bank.

The hospital setting is designed for function, efficiency and infection prevention so these soft and colourful, knitted blankets, teddy bears and cushions all help to make the patients feel more at home during their stay.

Locals of all ages and illnesses have benefited from the kindness of strangers who spend hours handcrafting these wares.

Eileen, a resident of Barwon Health’s Alan David Lodge, has donated 77 knitted blankets (and counting) for babies in University Hospital Geelong’s Special Care Nursery.

She started the project 18 months ago after incurring troubles with her vision, which left her near blind.

When her vision returned, she wanted to give back and keep busy. Each blanket, she said, can take anywhere between 3 days and a week.

When asked if she has a favourite colour or design she said, “it’s usually the next one I’m thinking about making”.

They assembled a group - Gayle, Cynthia, Lauren and Jill - and began stitching, supported by the Dutch Association which helped to buy materials.

Meanwhile, Jeanette, of the Mereburn CWA Branch, is another frequent donor who gifts perfectly made cushions – 90 of them so far - for heart surgery patients.

Patients hold the pillows tightly against their chest to provide an extra layer of pressure and comfort, and help counteract any jolting from a cough, sneeze or movement.

The final maker we would like to highlight is the always humble Denyse from Clifton Springs who regularly drops off bags of gorgeous handmade teddy bears for children on the University Hospital Geelong Kids Ward who might need some comfort.

Thank you to all those who spend their time helping to enhance the comfort of patients at Barwon Health.

If you wish to donate goods, you can visit the Barwon Health Foundation office at 283 Ryrie Street, Geelong, 9am-5pm Monday – Friday.

Handmade and heartfelt. These are the characteristics of the comforting items we are so gratefully gifted for Barwon Health patients by generous donors.

A legacy that lives on

It was when rewriting his will, in light of the changing circumstances, that Tony indicated he would like to make a gift to Barwon Health once he passed.

“Dad said that he wanted to make sure Dr David Campbell and that team were supported in recognition for the help that they gave,” Shannan said.

A life member at Newtown Cricket Club - in large part for his work with the Milo program - Tony’s skills as a mentor continued to shine through even in his most challenging days.

It was a final wish of Tony Gove’s that his family give back to Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre once he passed.

He had spent more time there than anyone would have liked him to after being diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 56.

The father of two - an adored teacher and enthusiastic cyclist - had dismissed symptoms for some time.

His score on the PSA test used to screen for prostate cancer – which measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in your blood – was deceptively unproblematic. By the time they found the cancer, it had escaped his prostate. The doctors regrettably informed the family that, at best, they would have five more years together.

They had five years and four months.

With surgery no longer a treatment option, he began a month of daily radiation combined with hormone therapy once every three months. Tony’s wife Carmel - with whom he shared two adult children, Shannan and Sophie - said for three years, this combination kept his cancer at bay. He accompanied this with regular exercise where possible and a healthy diet at the advice of nutritionist Rob Claridge to help fight the disease.

“He always saw Dr David Campbell at Andrew Love. He had all of his radiation there and anytime he needed iron or blood transfusions,” Carmel said.

“He was very brave and never bemoaned his condition. He decided very early on that whatever time he had left, he would make the most of.”

By February 2020 Tony’s condition had deteriorated and the health service became like a second home.

“After that the calendars were full of appointments,” Carmel said. “It was amazing and such a relief to have access to care that close to home. My Mum died many years ago and had to travel to Melbourne for cancer treatment and it made it so much more difficult.”

“When he spent a week at University Hospital Geelong in the November before he passed, one of the women caring for him was a qualified teacher but she was working as an oncology nurse and looking to go back to the classroom,” Carmel said.

“He offered to review her resume one night and was calling his contacts trying to line up a job for her. That sort of thing was pretty constant for dad the whole way through,” Shannan recalls.

Not long after that stay, Tony transitioned to the palliative care team.

“At the beginning they came to the house every morning and then in the end he spent five days at the palliative care facility at the McKellar Centre,” Carmel said.

“They are amazing, truly fantastic.”

In every day since, Carmel, Shannan and Sophie have continued to take inspiration from Tony’s journey.

Shannan, along with wife Alice and best friend Dave, created a ‘Tour de Tony’ an event to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer which generated $60,000. For Tony’s family, the ultimate legacy is early detection and helping to improve the services which cared for him so they can continue to support the next local family in need.

“I think locally we are so fortunate to have the care and services we do. It’s about supporting those who support you,” Shannan said. “And to think that it is available to people without charge - we were amazed,” Carmel adds.

A gift for future generations

Did you know, the very first bequest to the then Geelong Hospital was made in 1849 by a man named Tim Malloy?

Sometimes it’s a final, substantial contribution from a longstanding donor, other times it’s a first-time donation in the form of a pre-planned gift from someone who wasn’t in a position to do so during their lifetime.

Some bequests come from grateful former patients, or loved ones who were appreciative of their care, and others come from community-minded people who simply want to ensure people of the region have access to the best health services, equipment and research.

In many cases, donors make the Foundation aware of their intentions before they finalise their Will to get an overview of where funds may be needed, how the gift will be governed and, should they wish to make a bequest, ensure the wording is correct and ABN number is accurate.

Any enquires made are completely confidential and without any obligation.

Many who leave a bequest in their Will wish to specify the area within Barwon Health they would like it to support such as cancer, cardiology, mental health, aged care, palliative care, women’s and children’s needs or cutting edge research and clinical trials. Others simply request the funds go to the area of greatest need.

Donors who plan to make this type of gift may also consider becoming a member of the Tim Malloy Society - a group of like-minded people who have made a future commitment in their will.

During the course of the year, the Foundation will be conducting several information sessions on bequests and planning your legacy by expert independent legal and financial specialists.

The sessions will be a variety of online and in person events and will also feature a clinician or researcher showcasing their work.

For details on the sessions, a copy of the Legacy and Gifts in Wills brochure, or a confidential conversation, contact Philanthropy and Bequests Manager Francis Trainor on 4125 8919 or

Providing hope

The longevity and success is not only credited to researchers and clinicians but to thousands of patients whose participation helps to improve the health of our region now and into the future.

The Adrian Costa Clinical Trials Centre, made possible by a $2.5 million donation from the Costa family to the Barwon Health Foundation, means industry leaders will be able to conduct further investigations that can help fight or cure some of our most urgent health issues.

Research suggests clinical trial participants experience better clinical outcomes as a result of the expert monitoring and treatment they receive.

Located in Little Ryrie Street, the Adrian Costa Clinical Trials Centre exists to house and support existing clinical trials activity across the organisation and enable further expansion. Trials that are currently seeking volunteer participation include:

• A study that investigates how well a new combination therapy, taken once weekly, controls blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

• A clinical trial to prevent urinary tract infections in women.

• A world-first study that compares different types of diets to help with weight loss & improve overall health for shift workers.

• A trial of an investigational medication which may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, like heart attack and stroke, in people at high risk.

• If you would like more information on any of these trials, please visit www.barwonhealthfoundation.org.au where we have linked all relevant information.

Next gen donors

We are fortunate to have the support of several primary and secondary schools across the region.

We are always grateful for and inspired by the passion of students to make a difference in the community they live.

In 2022, Geelong College and Geelong Grammar School hosted a Swimathon which saw students from both local schools do continuous laps to raise funds for youth mental health. Together they swam a collective 151.3kms and raised over $8,500 to support Barwon Health’s Jigsaw programs.

Meanwhile, captains of the region’s catholic secondary colleges – St Joseph’s, Sacred Heart, Clonard and Saint Ignatius - also came together to plan a combined Winter Formal event, the funds of which supported our Giving Month appeal as well as youth wellbeing.

We’re also grateful for the St Joseph’s College students who volunteered on multiple occasions to work the barbeques at local Bunnings stores to help us raise funds for major appeals.

Proving you’re never too young to start giving back, each year the library monitors at Holy Family Catholic Primary School work together to write, illustrate and publish a children’s book for patients on the Cotton On Kids Ward at University Hospital Geelong to enjoy. In addition to this, in 2022, the school also held a casual dress day to support a play therapy service within the ward.

We were also fortunate to be the charity of choice for several individual student endeavours including Emmerson and Chloe of Iona College.

Emmerson was inspired by her mum, who works at Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre, and made packs to keep the day ward patients occupied while they receive treatment while Chloe did a similar thing for younger patients in need.

Olivia from Sacred Heart College also took the initiative to create goodie bags for children and families spending time in hospital as part of her Mercy Leadership Project.

The bags were thoughtfully put together with colouring books, pencils, markers, craft activities, story books, AFL posters and scarfs, and other distraction items all which were kindly donated. The first young patient to receive a goodie bag was Harry whose favourite item was the ‘Worry Stone’ with special powers to stop any worries.

Donors deliver for local mums

This vital piece of equipment, purchased with funds raised during the 2021 Wish Upon A Star Christmas Appeal, helps the one in 10 women with high-risk pregnancies get the extra scans and expertise they need closer to home.

In light of this exciting one year anniversary, we caught up with Dr Emily Olive, from Barwon Health’s Fetal Medicine Unit, to chat about the impact this donation has had on staff and patients.

“Having a quality ultrasound machine enables women to have pregnancy ultrasound studies that would have otherwise required travel to Melbourne,” she shares.

“We have already helped many women who were at risk of preterm birth.”

Dr Olive said by being able to offer weekly ultrasound reviews, the unit has been able to improve predictions about which patients are likely to deliver their baby early and prescribe appropriate medicines to optimise outcomes for both mother and baby.

“Perhaps just as important though, is the reassurance we can provide to those not at risk of early delivery, which then allows some women to stay at home in a regional setting,” she adds.

The fetal medicine unit also carefully monitors the growth of babies small in the womb.

“By being able to track the growth and health of the smallest babies, we can plan for the birth when the pregnancy has advanced as far as possible but without taking unnecessary risks,” Dr Olive said.

“Getting the balance right requires careful monitoring and discussion with paediatricians who will care for the new baby.”

Even for those women who have such complex pregnancies that delivery in Melbourne is inevitable, Barwon Health’s fetal medicine service –established only as a result of the donated equipment – now allows the patient to experience shared care for some of the journey.

An entirely community funded, state-of-the-art foetal ultrasound monitor has been enhancing the experience of pregnant local women for a year.
“We are very grateful to the Barwon Health Foundation and its supporters for their help in purchasing the ultrasound machine, which has already improved the standard of care for so many.”

Volunteer spotlight

Having been a patient of Barwon Health’s cancer services, a patient ambassador, Dry July champion and host of countless fundraisers, Kylie continues to give back to the health service that helped her following her 2017 diagnosis. Thank you to Kylie and all of the other volunteers who make Barwon Gifts possible.

Local business gives the gift of time

In 2023, we are thrilled to welcome back volunteers to our Barwon Gifts team. Located on Level 3 at University Hospital Geelong, the gift shop is open Monday to Friday with 100% of profits supporting patient comfort and care at Barwon Health.

This would not be possible without the volunteers who donate their time to work at the shop each day. One of those people is Kylie Blackney.

Another volunteer with endless energy and enthusiasm to make a difference is Libby Bate who won the Viva Energy Community Legend Award in October. As the passionate leader of Cancer After Care since 2009, Libby has had an immeasurable impact on the lives and health of residents across the region. Geelong cancer patients have better care, closer to home, thanks to her fundraising efforts and advocacy. We were honoured when she asked to direct her $13,000 prize money to Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre. We couldn’t think of a more worthy winner. Congratulations Libby.

Breakwater Kitchens have long been supporters of our annual June Giving Weekend and we love their approach to giving back! The business registers all of its staff to participate in the traditional tin shake as a team bonding activity with a side of healthy competition. In 2022 they provided 18 volunteers which were split into two groups manning intersections on the opposite sides of town and collectively added over $4,000 to our Giving Weekend tally. In the end there was only $54.10 separating the winning and losing teams but the ultimate winner was our local health service. If you’re not in position to contribute financially, donating your time is a fantastic way to support Barwon Health.

If your local business is looking for team volunteer opportunities email foundation@barwonhealth.org.au

Volunteers don’t necessarily have more time than anyone else, but what they do have is an incredible heart that prioritises giving back – and we are so grateful that they do.

Clubs show their community spirit

We are always grateful to be the recipient of funds raised at activities hosted by local groups and clubs across the region.

Whether they’re sporting, social or special interest groups, we are encouraged and inspired by their common passion for supporting our local health service.

Here are some examples of the creative ways they choose to raise funds for their areas of interest.

Barwon Heads Cycling Club

Earlier this year, Barwon Heads Cycling Club undertook its Bridge to Bridge Charity Ride, a challenging journey from Barwon Heads to Tasmania which raised money for Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre. A group of 17 riders took part in the 800km journey which required them to ride an average of 130km per day with 7,700m of collective elevation throughout the course. The incredible challenge saw them inspire upwards of $12,000 in donations.

Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes

The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes made a contribution of $2601 to Barwon Health’s Newcomb Dialysis Unit to help improve the comfort and care of patients accessing the service. The amount was made up of donations collected by Lodge members throughout the year. We thank them for keeping this Barwon Health front of mind.

Ocean Grove Bowling Club

Members of the Ocean Grove Bowling Club kindly donated $222.10 to Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre from the club’s affectionately known ‘Pink Pig’ which raises money from bowlers who make a ‘whoopsy’ or send one down the rink on the wrong bias –what a fun way to give back!

Golfing Heart Zipper Committee

Last year’s annual Cardiology Cup saw 20 players tackle the course at Portarlington Golf Club to support Cardiology Research at Barwon Health. Through the generosity of the players and sponsors, $1800 was raised to purchase a refrigerated centrifuge for the research team. This specialised equipment is used to spin blood samples taken from research study participants. Donating to research supports our community today and into the future.

Lifestyle Communities Ocean Grove

Lifestyle Communities Ocean Grove paired its annual Christmas tree trimming and decorating tradition with a festive fundraiser supporting local cancer patients. The day featured games of pickleball, croquet, water aerobics and a sausage sizzle alongside the all-important decorating of the huge pine trees at the front of the village. On top of the 90-plus attendees, members from the local CFA, police and ambulance services turned out to support for the cause. The event generated $1,183.40. What a wonderful way to spread the Christmas cheer!

Giving Month

The generosity of Geelong inspired the expansion of a much-loved annual appeal in 2022, growing our traditional Giving Weekend on the final weekend of June, into an entire Giving Month. The community helped us not only meet but exceeded our ambitious $300,000 goal with a $366,750 result, $76,432 of which was raised in the final three days with a featuring tin shaking at popular intersections, several Bunnings barbeques, a pop-up at Market Square Shopping Centre and fundraising at a North Shore v Lara GFL match. Thanks also to local businesses who donated a portion of their sales from across the weekend to the cause.

Catwalk4Cancer

Our annual night of fashion and fundraising returned for the first time since 2019 to generate $57,000 in support of cancer patients across the region. The event, which marked Andrew Love Cancer Centre’s 30th anniversary, saw Geelong Arts Centre welcome over 250 guests for an immersive fashion experience. The night featured a runway show by naming rights sponsor Ena Pelly and themed fashion installations by local brands, Tinky, Chez Ma Belle, Birdskin, Pearls & Roses and Salt & Soda.

Sharing Tulli’s Smile

The Sharing Tulli’s Smile Fund was inspired by Tulli Seabert. Born with a number of medical conditions, Tulli was unable to walk, talk or eat, but she could smile and she always did the most smiling while listening to music. After she passed in November 2019, her parents Bek and Trav established the Fund in her honour to raise money in support of the children’s music therapy program at University Hospital Geelong. In August, they held at event at The Pier which raised an incredible $37,958.78 to help ensure kids in need can experience the joy of music like Tulli did.

Power Up for MND - A Banquet for Brian

In September, local restaurant 1915 hosted Power Up for MND – A Banquet for Brian supporting Brian, Helen and the Macafee family, raising funds to support their own journey and that of local families also impacted by Moor Neuron Disease (MND). The event, MC’d by Geelong born comedian Dave Thornton, raised $54,230 to help Barwon Health’s MND Clinic provide additional aids and equipment for local patients.

Run4Geelong

A sea of red Run4Geelong t-shirts took over Geelong’s iconic waterfront on November 13 as the popular community event raised over $133,000. The sun made a welcome appearance as 2,800 participants of all ages and abilities tackled the 10km, 5.5km and 1km kids courses. Among them were a number of grateful patients, healthcare workers, Geelong Cats stars and then-acting Prime Minister and Member for Corio, the Hon. Richard Marles MP. The event, supported by the Geelong Advertiser, saw 100% of every registration fee donated to a health area of the participant’s choice. The course took in the sights of Eastern Beach, the city centre and the Geelong Botanic Gardens with live music and an optional colour station to enjoy along the way. Postrace, Richie Boulevard was abuzz with free face painting, entertainment, smoothies, massages and food to refuel.

Gala Christmas Concert & Markets

Johnstone Park was transformed into a festive wonderland on December 10, as thousands turned out for the Geelong Connected Communities Gala Christmas Concert and Markets. The free community event raised $24,952 for the Wish Upon A Star Christmas Appeal supporting local sick kids. Crowds took advantage of the many things to do and see before the performances kicked off, taking part in activities by Kelly Sports, face painting, caricatures, enjoying access to the 2022 AFL Premiership Cup and browsing the local market stalls and food trucks. The concert was hosted by The Mik Maks and featured Kings of Christmas Rob Mills and Bobby Fox, Stellar Perry, Kim Cooper and Imogen Brough, as well as traditional Gala acts Karen Feldman’s Dance Studio, With One Voice Choir, Pitch Perfect Singing School, Geelong Concert Band and Geelong Highland Pipe Band.
