Celebrating Tradition, Unity and Giving As the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and the chill of autumn fills the air, London welcomes one of the most anticipated events of the year the London Sharad Utsav. This annual celebration of Sharad Utsav, also known as Ealing Durga Puja, epitomises the heart and soul of London's diverse and inclusive cultural landscape. In 2023, the festival continues to be a symbol of unity and a reflection of the city's rich multicultural tapestry.

London Sharad Utsav (LSU), organized by the Bengal Heritage Foundation (BHF), is a testament to the power of cultural celebrations in bringing communities together and bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. In its 15th year, this vibrant and enchanting festival continues to captivate the hearts of thousands in the heart of London. We at BHF orchestrate this grand celebration that transcends boundaries and showcases the rich tapestry of Bengali culture.

This year, LSU takes on even greater significance, given the challenges the world has faced in the past few years. In the face of adversity, the festival exemplifies resilience, unity, and the enduring spirit of Londoners. At its core, LSU is a celebration of Goddess Durga, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Yet, it transcends religious boundaries, welcoming people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

What sets LSU apart is the sheer diversity of its participants. The festival serves as a melting pot, bringing together people from various faiths, nationalities, and backgrounds. This is a testament to the multicultural heart of London which thrives through events like this, where diversity is a wellspring of strength and unity.

Over the course of 4 days, attendees can immerse themselves in a spectrum of religious rituals to cultural experiences, from mesmerizing dances and ethereal music to culinary delights.

This fusion of the traditional and the contemporary is a testament to the BHF’s ability to preserve heritage while embracing the evolving city of London. It is an opportunity for Londoners to explore and appreciate the art, music and cuisine of Bengal, enriching their own cultural experiences.

Additionally, LSU has become a platform for nurturing young talents and showcasing their skills and creativity while connecting with their cultural roots. The festival is committed to promoting cultural diversity and fostering harmony. It is a celebration of unity and diversity that inspires us all.

In addition to its cultural richness, LSU has a heart of compassion. This festival is not just about celebration but also about giving. It's a reminder that in the midst of abundance and joy, we must extend a hand to those less fortunate.

The festival supports education expenses for children in Sunderbans and provides new attire for Puja festivities, along with sarees to women in rural Bengal. Charitable partnerships with organizations like Banchbo in India and Calcutta Rescue in UK demonstrate a commitment to unity, diversity, and community service.

As we come together to celebrate the London Sharad Utsav 2023 organized by the Bengal Heritage Foundation, the festival celebrates the strength and beauty of cultural differences, promoting unity and inclusivity in London. It showcases cultural traditions and invites everyone to partake in celebrating life's diversity.

Suranjan Som As we stand on the threshold of the 15th year of our illustrious journey, it fills me with immense pride and joy to address our vibrant and resilient community, who have been steadfastly walking this path of cultural celebration with us. London Sharad Utsav has grown and evolved in ways that none of us could have predicted when we first embarked on this incredible journey. Our 15th year marks a significant milestone, one filled with both tradition and transformation.

The heart of any Durga Pujo is the spirit of togetherness, the deep reverence for tradition, and the unwavering devotion to the Goddess Durga. Over the years, we have witnessed these values being embraced and celebrated with increasing fervour by our community members and friends from diverse backgrounds. This multicultural harmony is what makes our celebration truly unique and reflects the inclusive spirit of London.

One of the most remarkable changes we have witnessed this year is the shifting of our venue from Ealing Town Hall to Greenford Hall. This transition, though challenging, was inevitable as our glorious abode for the last 14 years, is now closed indefinitely. However, our new venue will provide a spacious and vibrant setting for our festivities, offering even more opportunities for cultural programs, artistic expressions and immersive experiences. It is a testament to our community's resilience and adaptability that we have embraced this change with enthusiasm and determination.

As we gather at Greenford Hall this year, we must remember that it is not just about the bricks and mortar, but the collective spirit and devotion that we bring to the event that truly matter. Our cultural programs, the idol of Goddess Durga, the traditional rituals, the delicious food, and the camaraderie will continue to shine brightly in our new home.

While free entry, free bhog (twice a day) and daily cultural programmes have been a part of our Pujo every year, this year we will see some exclusive innovations including external lighting imported from Chandan Nagar, West Bengal as well as a terracotta style Pujo Mandap inside for our Ek Chala Thakur.

I want to take this moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated committee members, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who has contributed to the success of our Durga Puja celebrations over the past 15 years. Your unwavering support and tireless efforts are the cornerstones of our event, and without you, we would not have come this far.

In the spirit of unity and cultural celebration, let us make the 15th year of our Durga Pujo festival a grand and memorable occasion. Together, we shall ensure that our beloved Goddess Durga graces us with her blessings, protecting us and guiding us toward an even brighter future.

Traditional Durga Puja in Zamindar Mansions (Bonedi Bari) of Bengal ANDUL RAJ BARI HOWRAH The founder of the Andul Raj family, Late Ram Charan Roy had a very humble beginning. Out of his zeal, perseverance and tenacity he became well versed in “Farsi” the widely used court language of the period. His just and judicious observations finally brought him to legal profession and after the decisive win in the battle of Plassy, Ramchandra conferred with ‘Dewanship’ and soon became one of the leading landlords of the region. It was Kasinath Roy, who built this palace with the identical look of Burdwan Raj House. He also erected Annapurna Temple and fourteen Siva Temples.

There was a small cause’s court in the backyard of the Rajbari. Durga puja was started in 1770 by Raj Narayan Roy who was conferred “Raja” title

by Lord Auckland. There were arrangement for all kinds of entertainment, including dancing by ‘Nauch girls’ in the “Baitakkhana” during the puja, which had a highly polished wooden floor, now in a desolate look and morbid state.

The family had a very unique style of immersion.

The deity was carried to the nearby Saraswati River and cannon was fired to cause the impact for her immersion. The puja is now carried out by their descendants and a fair is organized in the courtyard where lip smacking delicacies of traditional Bengali sweets are available which one should definitely taste.

KUNDU CHOWDHURY FAMILY HOWRAH The family of Kundu Chowdhury in Howrah is one of the few Bonedi families who organize Durga puja twice in a year, once during Basanti puja and again during autumn months. This custom evolved due to late arrival of the male members of the family during the autumn festival from the voyager. In fact, it reflects the family’s intense connection in the sea trade. Though the family originally settled in Mohiari in 1745, it was

The Goddess is worshipped in ‘Hara-Gouri’ form where the mother Goddess is sited in the lap of the Lord Shankar portraying the traditional look of the Bengali womanhood. The elaborate ritual of applying vermilion before the formal immersion is not observed in the family. Being a follower of Vaishnavite cult, the family follows strictly vegetarian food in the offerings and for their own consumption too during puja days.

PUJA AT HUTOM’S HOUSE, BAKSHA, HOOGHLY Only half an hour’s journey from Howrah station, Baksha is a quiet hamlet neighboring the popular village of Janai. By and large, we do not talk much about the specialties of these villages, except Janai’s popular sweet, Monohara. However, it is interesting to note that a century ago; Baksha was the seat of several powerful landlords of the time. One such family is Singha (Singhi) and their ancient mansion is popularly known as ‘Singhi bari’. The old house has very little left, except the thakurdalan where Durga Puja is being performed for the past two and a half century. The scalloped arches in the Thakur dalan are most intriguing. With the abolition of zamindari, the family fortunes have shrunken, but traditions are still maintained as they were during the days of the predecessors, who established it more than centuries ago. The famous poet and litterateur, Kaliprasanna Singha, who wrote under the popular pseudonym of ‘Hutom Pancha’ was also a member of the Singha family.

Dewan Santiram Singha was the first established member of the Singha family.

Santiram’s descendant, Mahendralal Singha, was in a coveted post during the Nawab era, bought land in Baksha where he build a house and thakurdalan. He also started Durga Puja in a grand scale. Since then, Durga Puja has never had a break. According to old family records, although Kaliprasanna Singha was born and brought up at Jorasanko, he often visited his ancestral home in Hooghly during Durga Puja.

An amazingly beautiful headgear is preserved and reused every year, carried by the family members in shoulders while immersion is undertaken in the nearby river.

ANCESTRAL HOUSE OF SANKARI PROSAD BASU, NATIBPUR , KHANAKUL, HOOGHLY Our neighbouring district Hooghly is dotted with number of well-known families where century old Durga puja is still in place with reverence and respect. One such is at Natibpur situated near the confluence of Mundeswari and Damodar river in Khanakul, Hooghly . It is the ancestral home of well-known Vivekananda scholar, writer and critic Late Sankari Prosad Bose. In his biographical note, he has mentioned that “long time ago one of our family member went to a pilgrimage at Benaras and returned with a deity of lord Krishna, which is called Damodar in our family. This event of religious act spread like wildfire and the news reached to the Burdwan Raja who granted a sizable piece of land for the maintenance of the deity. Gradually, a temple was constructed and a potter from the nearby village spontaneously took the responsibility to make the idol”. Till such time Durga Puja is taking place uninterruptedly. Animal sacrifice is still followed in the puja. In Basu family, Kumari Puja symbolizes the special presence of the divine Mother within every woman and is performed on the Nabami day. It is something very special to view the obeisance paid by the entire village to their Mother who is in sojourn for four days only, said a member of the Bose family, who is also an eminent actress.

Senbari, Somra, Hooghly

TEENHAAT DURGA (DURGA WITH THREE HANDS) SOMRA , HOOGHLY In some places of Bengal, the conventional manifestation of Durga with ten hands is not in place. One such exceptional deity is worshiped at Senbari in Somra, a place near Bandel, where the deity having only three hands is worshiped for over two hundred plus years. It was founded

by Krishnaram Sen, who was conferred upon the title of 'Rayrayan Raja Bahadur' in 1742 by His Highness Md.Shah, the then Mughal Emperor of Delhi. Story goes that the unique concept of the deity was visualized by him only over a dream.

The virtual deity appeared holding a sword and a trishul in her two right hands and holding the hair of the demon in her left-hand. Rests of the hands were covered under her hair. Moreover, Owl and Swan are not attached to Goddesses Lakhsmi and Saraswati . The traditional ritual of ’Kalabou‘ is not performed in the river, it is observed in the Thakurdalan instead.

“Similarly, after immersion, to cherish the community feeling, the male members of the family roam around the village chanting Vedic sloka“ said a family member. The puja deserves a special accolade in view of its sincere adherence to the guidelines pronounced in Vedic Texts in every step of worship and services offered to Goddess Durga.

Ealing, East India Company and the curious tale of the Indian Insanes Once upon a time, not too far from where you are standing now with folded hands and in your Sunday best, there stood at the corner of Ealing Commons a large and handsome house. The house was at the heart of ten acres of majestic gardens surrounded by 26 acres of meadows as far as the eyes could see. A triple line of mature elms led to its front door. The year was 1870 and Elm Grove, once the formidable family home of British Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval, now housed 110 men and women curiously called the ‘Indian Insanes’. None of them were Indian, and many were not strictly ‘insane’ but all of them had one thing in common, they had spent a varying amount of time in the heat and dust of India.

The story of how Elm Grove, once a British Premier’s home, transformed into the Royal Indian Asylum – one of the most important private asylums in Victorian Britain – is a fascinating one. It is also the story of how the East India Company (EIC), a private enterprise no different from Amazon or Starbucks, came to rule a country halfway round the world; of assumed prestige of British superiority and keeping up appearances during the fading heydays of the late 19th century. It is also the little-known tale of Ealing’s intimate connections with India more than 150 years ago.

The story begins however doesn’t start at Ealing, but further east in Hackney. In February 1819, a

curious advert appeared in the East India Register and Army List calling on paying patrons to rest and recuperate at the private asylum of Dr George Rees in Hackney. By now, trade in the ‘mad business’ as it was derisively called by those concerned with its rampant abuse and unethical practices, was a highly competitive market in the city. But at Pembroke House, Dr Rees had an edge. He was offering affluent Londoners something that his competitors couldn’t – the exclusive endorsement of the Honourable East India Company. Soon Pembroke House had the sole monopoly of all India returned ‘insanes’. Dr Rees did not need to advertise any further.

But why did the EIC need private ‘mad houses’ in Britain?

By the late 18th century reports began to circulate in the dispatches to London and later in the press, of Europeans going mad in India.

A Victorian Mental Asylum

There was a rush of doctors who left in droves for the East. Exclusive asylums came up in the presidencies – Dr Dick’s in Calcutta, Dr Valentine Conolly’s in Madras. British doctors (not just asylum proprietors) were some of the most affluent and influential citizens throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries in India. They were not only in the rich pay of native princes but earned huge commissions as medical suppliers of medicines and diet to the military. In addition, most private doctors had also clung on to their military commissions. So, after every victory in the battlefield by the EIC, they would receive a cut of the prize money. And increasingly, of all the medical disciplines one of the most lucrative businesses was the ‘trade in lunacy’.

However, all good things come to an end. News of excessive wealth, waste of public resources and large profiteering by the private asylums in Calcutta and Madras soon reached London.

There were also reports of neglect and welfare concerns for the European patients in the British press. The price of keeping a ‘lunatic’ in India for an indeterminate period was steadily rising, the rates of maintenance was far higher in Calcutta than in London. There was also a perceived notion of assumed prestige and status. The EIC could not afford to lose face that Europeans were going mad in India. Every 20 years, the government renewed the EIC charter so it could continue its business in India. The Company could not risk losing the charter. It decided on drastic measures. At great cost and considerable effort, they decided to repatriate the ‘Indian Insanes’ to London, first to Pembroke House and then later to the Royal Indian Asylum (RIA) in Ealing.

But the story of Royal Indian in Ealing was unique. Unlike Pembroke or any other private asylums in Calcutta, Madras or London, the Ealing institution was actively sought after, purchased, and customised for the sole purposes to suit the exclusive requirement of the EIC. When Elm Grove came up for sale in 1870, the Company sent its most trusted architect Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt and Doctor Thomas B Christie to scope out the place. Elm Grove was bought from the Perceval family for £24,500.

Another £12,000 was spent to convert the spacious family home of Spencer Perceval – the British PM assassinated by an alleged lunatic in Parliament in 1812 – to an asylum. In August 1870, the first patients moved in from India and those transferred from Pembroke House after its closure.

Life within Elm Grove was not mundane.

Although it could house up to 156 patients, the Royal Indian Asylum was never at capacity.

There were 110 second class beds, 23 first class suites and another 23 exclusive quarters for female patients. But on an average, there were only about 110 patients sometimes even less. The staff patient ratio was high with 23 servants round the clock, four officers and one chaplain.

Dr Christie, who had come for the initial recce, joined as the superintendent and went to extraordinary lengths to mitigate the stigma around lunacy and raise the profile of Royal Indian within the immediate community.

Ealing in the 1870s was a sought-after suburb.

The Duke of Kent had bought a country house and the affluent Londoners followed close at heel, buying land and bringing up families in still comparatively rural settings yet in close proximity to the city. It was essential therefore for Dr Christie to establish himself with his affluent and influential neighbours. He opened the magnificent gardens of Elm Grove to the Horticultural Society which held its annual shows in the grounds. He joined the Ealing Constitutional and Conservative Club, became the Ruling Councillor of the Primrose League and every Sunday was seen at the local church not once but twice. All this to gain influence and raise the profile of the Royal Indian Asylum in Ealing.

Elm Grove

Yet stigma grew and throughout the 22 years of its life in Ealing, India House faced increased pressure to shut the Royal Indian Asylum and move its inmate to public institutions. But this was resisted, for one reason only – profit. The cost of public asylums in London was much higher than those in private. India House also had far greater control in the later. Despite this, conditions in the private asylums were far superior to those in council and government institutions.

Most of the patients who arrived at Ealing were ‘paralysed and helpless’ but not necessarily always ‘insane’. One former army lieutenant suffered extreme hallucinations where he ‘imagined himself transformed into a vegetable, an artichoke, and was in the habit of taking advantage of every shower that fell in order that he might be properly watered’. Other patients were considered long ‘gone’ from being long term users and abusers of Indian ‘bhang’. Many were otherwise pleasant, punctuated with days when they wandered the corridors and grounds thinking they were an Emperor or Admiral Nelson. But most of the long term and elderly and aristocratic patients suffered less from lunacy and more from nostalgia, boredom, venereal and infectious diseases, grief, and dementia.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the landscape of Ealing was fast changing. Despite having set up the asylum and repatriating patients from India at considerable cost to its coffers, Royal Indian Asylum finally shut its doors on 24 June, 1892. In 1890, the Lunacy Act was passed which forbade the creation of new private asylums and the expansions of old ones.

Ealing was also no longer a rural retreat. The Great Western Railway and two branches of the Grand Union Canal had shattered its peace and the once quiet community was now prime property. India Office, which had taken over from the EIC, could no longer resist the temptations. After Dr Christie’s death in 1892, the final 74 patients were transferred to institutions in Yarmouth and Stafford and the Elm Grove Estate was sold to banker Leopold de Rothschild.

Today, after anjali, if you find yourself driving past Ealing Commons, pause at the corner of Elm Grove Road where Crosslands Avenue meets All Saints Church. There above the rising din of evening traffic, you can perhaps still catch the chatter of a ‘fanciful emperor’ and the lost stories of the returning Raj.

Tete a tete with India’s future pace spearhead : Titas Sadhu In this exclusive Titas Sadhu interview with her coach, Priyankar Mukherjee, the rising star, Titas, spoke about her journey so far, her childhood, her world cup and Asian games experiences, and future aspirations.

Titas Sadhu, is a young prodigy who helped the Indian Women’s team bring the first World Cup Trophy home in the form of the Under-19 World Cup 2023 as well as ensured the 2023 Asian Games Gold Medal. She was awarded the Player of the Match in the Under-19 World Cup 2023 Final for her exceptional two-wicket spell.

She debuted for the senior team in Asian Games 2023 and this time she also bowled a memorable spell (4-2-6-3) in the final to clinch the Gold.

Yeah, it is like the best phase of my career so far as it has been a terrific year not just for me but for Indian women’s cricket as well, and I am also looking forward to what is yet to come.

You have been the player of the match in both the U-19 World Cup Final and the Asian Games Final. What gave you greater satisfaction?

Both of these memories are quite special memories of mine as the Under-19 World Cup final was one of the star performances of our lives because it was the first time that Women’s cricket was able to bring the World Cup home and the Asian Games final also holds a special place as it was my debut tournament for Indian senior team and to be able to be the player of the match is also an incredible feat so I don’t know like which one gives more satisfaction.

You played for IPL earlier this year. Has the experience somehow helped you to grow as a cricketer?

WPL was an excellent experience even though I did not get to play. Earlier it was disheartening but I thought about it and told myself I would learn everything possible through this tournament. We had excellent players, incredible coaches, and incredible support staff and I told myself that I would go every day, learn as much as I could, and ask questions about how I can improve my game and how I can grow as a cricketer.

Let's go for a flashback. Tell us something about your formative years. Any special memory in school?

Yes, I have very fond memories of my time at school. I used to study at Techno India Group Public School and have studied there for like 10-11 years. So, I had like numerous friends including teachers as well. I remember that we used to have house competitions, and we used to roam around and bunk classes using that as an excuse.

How did you step into the world of sports and games? When did you know that Titas was undoubtedly going to be sportsperson?

Where I grew up, we have a sport-friendly culture, like every kid goes to the ground to play,

and I did too. I used to go with my granddad to the swimming classes, and that’s how it all started. There was no definite time when I thought I would be a sportsperson until I made my debut for the senior domestic team, and that was the time when I felt that I could make a career out of the sport I love playing.

Did you ever have a role model? Someone's footsteps to follow?

Growing up, I have seen a lot of cricketers very closely, who went on to play for the Bengal and India Senior Teams. When I saw them play and the passion they had, I decided that if I want to play, I will be like them.

How do you look upon such a wonderful success so early in your career?

I try not to look at my achievements as success. I would rather look at them as targets because I believe the moment you achieve something, you feel hollow for some time as it makes you feel like you don’t have anything to strive for again and it is very important to come back and reset your goals so you never lose purpose of moving forward.

What's your very next target or objective?

The very next target would be to perform well in the upcoming senior women’s T20 Trophy, which will be starting from the 19th of October.

Has life changed?

During Asian Games 2023

I would like to believe that life has not changed but it has as it’s inevitable with success and the people who look at you. But I think I am blessed with a core group of people who don’t care about my achievements, and they are more happy that I am coming back than I am coming with a gold medal which helps me to keep going because even if I do not perform, I will still have those people around me.

Where do you love to see yourself ten years from now?

And finally, how would you like to be remembered?

I think life is not about cricket only, from 10 years down the line I would like to be happy in life, healthy and surrounded by people who care about me and who I love. But cricket being a part of my life, I would love to have won the World Cup by then at least.

I would like to be remembered as a good human being and as a cricketer, match-winner for India and obviously a World Cup winner.

Our readers will definitely be interested to learn about your parents. They must have been extremely supportive.

I had a bit different childhood as my parents never forced me into something like they never told me particularly that you have to study or play cricket, but what was in-built in me was that whatever you choose to become you have to be one of the very best at it.

A number of parents don't encourage children to pursue sports and try to be a professional. What would you like to tell them?

I think we are in a society where sports are seen as hobbies not professions. If someone is playing just for the sake of playing, the parents are fine with it, but when it comes to pursuing it as a career, they obstruct it. IPL has changed it a bit for cricket, but the other sports are still not at the level where cricket is. I think we need to understand as a community that sports or even any type of art can be chosen as a career and one can make a career out of passion.

Located in the heart of the city is Carlton Hill, a must-visit destination for anyone who loves stunning views. From the top, you can enjoy picturesque panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.

Our voyage began with the beautiful city of Edinburgh, the Scottish Capital with rich heritage. The city is full of history, culture, and charm. From the streets of the Royal Mile to the stunning Edinburgh Castle on a hilltop, there is no shortage of things to see and do.

Our quest pressed on further towards the enchanting Scottish Highlands, one of the most breath-taking places I have ever visited. The landscape is nothing short of awe-inspiring, with Ben, Glen and Lochs - rolling hills and majestic mountains decorated with stunning valleys and lakes. We drove through the Cairngorms national park towards Inverness. On the way, we stopped at the remarkable Druimuachdar summit, the highest rail road point in UK, to witness the Scottish train passing through.

We continued north travelling as far as Inverness, before reaching the enchanting Loch Ness, the majestic water body surrounded by verdant hills and forests, and its fabled resident, the Loch Ness Monster.

Our quest pressed forth as we drove through Fort William, reaching the summit of Ben Nevis, iconic mist-shrouded peak and the pinnacle of the United Kingdom's grandeur. The highlight of the expedition, without a doubt, was the breath-taking beauty of Glencoe. This lush valley is rich in ancient lore and a heritage that resonates throughout time. Last but not the least, how on earth could one overlook the Highland Coos? The wonder animals were traversing in harmonious herds and spanning the entire journey.

Returning back to Edinburgh, we graced the hallowed grounds of the renowned Princes Street Garden overlooking the Edinburgh Castle. Intrigued to know more of Scottish Culture, we visited the National Museum of Scotland and Scottish Parliament. We partook in the traditional Scottish Breakfast, savouring its flavours and delights. We enraptured our minds by the tales of the Scottish Kilt, woven with threads of history and legend.

And as we walked upon the cobbled paths, the enchanting melodies of Bagpipers carried us away to the realm of Scottish tunes.

The False Sunrise Storytelling is an art I have long tried to master.

It started long ago, when I was a child begging my grandmother for yet another enthralling tale.

Now she, was a master storyteller, weaving magic with her words. The pregnant pauses, heart-rending twists and exhilarating climaxes created a fantastical atmosphere for child me.

It nurtured a lifelong love for stories and our rich culture proved to be a treasure trove of sorts. I have spent many a happy hour either searching for or reading these mythological tales.

Today, I want to share with you all, one such tale that I have stumbled upon recently. It is a love story but before you roll your eyes at me, let me tell you this is not a happy one! The tale is tragic and messy as life often is.

This is the story of Punyakshi, an oracle so powerful, that the entire southern part of India reverberated with her name. People came from far and wide to consult her and seek her blessings. But who did Punyakshi seek?

Surely no commoner would catch her eye.

Instead, she sought a mighty being – the seeker, the destroyer, the protector, the allencompassing Shiva himself. She submitted herself heart and soul to his divine presence and so passionate was her love for Shiva, that Mahadeva too was moved. He decided to marry her and set forth from his abode, the great Mount Kailash.

Herein lies the twist. The divine union between Lord Shiva and Punyakshi created a great furor amongst the villagers. They realized that they would lose their precious oracle and hatched a devious plan to thwart the marriage. The villagers demanded that Mahadev pay a bride price and asked for three virtually impossible things: a sugarcane with no rings, a beetle leaf without veins and a coconut without eyes.

Surely, they thought the Lord would be unable to procure these items as they did not exist in Nature. But little did they gauge the iron determination of the Almighty Shiva. The task was of no consequence to Him, and the items were procured and delivered rather easily. But the wily villagers were in no mood to give up.

They put up one last condition – Shiva would have to marry the oracle before sunrise the next day.

Undeterred by this, Shiva hurried on. This greatly worried the villagers. They hatched yet another devious plot. Gathering great mounds of camphor, they set it ablaze. The blaze was incandescent, and Shiva mistakenly thought that the sun had indeed come up. Disheartened, he turned away. In the meanwhile, Punyakshi,

completely unaware of the evil ministrations of the villagers, continued waiting for her Lord. And when he didn’t turn up, red with rage and humiliation, she ran to stand at the very edge of the world, where the land meets the sea. There she renounced the material world forever.

Thus ends a rather tragic love story. And while I leave you here, can you guess the name of the place where Punyakshi relinquished her earthly ties?

Hindu mythology is a treasure trove of such stories. These complex and colourful anecdotes throb with drama and emotion. There are unending tales of love, destruction and war just waiting to be unearthed. The fluidity of these stories are such that they can be moulded across time and geography…told and retold many a time carefully capturing innocent minds and nurturing the essence of our history. This is my attempt at re-telling a much-loved tale and I do hope you enjoyed it.

বাউল ফকিরি গান: অতীত থেকে বর্ত মান বিগত বছর কু ড়ি সময়সীমা জুড়ে নাগরিক বৃত্তে বাউল ফকিরি গান শোনা এবং চর্চার ক্ষেত্রে একটা জোয়ার দেখা যাচ্ছে। কলকাতার বুকে, যেমন যাদবপুরের শক্তিগড়, গড়িয়া সংলগ্ন বোড়াল এবং কলকাতা মহানগরের আশেপাশে বেশ কিছু বাউল ফকিরি গানের বার্ষিক উৎসবের আয়োজন হচ্ছে। এইসব উৎসবে শহুরে তরুণ-তরুণীদের ভিড় চোখে পড়ার মতো। একইসঙ্গে শহুরে তরুণ-তরুণীরা পৌঁছে যাচ্ছেন গ্রামীণ মেলা, উৎসব বা আখড়ায়। একটা ইতিবাচক বন্ধু ত্বপূর্ণ সম্পর্ক ও আদান-প্রদানের পরিবেশ গড়ে উঠেছে। তথাকথিত বাউল বা ফকির ঘরের না হয়েও শহরের অনেকে বিভিন্ন মঞ্চে এই গান গাইছেন। সেখানে হয়তো কখনো কখনো সুরের ক্ষেত্রেও কিছু অদল-বদল ঘটছে। গবেষক ও শ্রোতাদের অনেকে এই বিষয়টিকে ভালো চোখে না দেখলেও অধিকাংশ বাউল ফকির কিন্তু এতে কোনো অসুবিধে আছে বলে মনে করেন না। তাঁদের মতে, কথা বিকৃ ত না হলেই হল। এসবের মাধ্যমে আসলে মহাজনদের গানের বাণীই প্রচার হচ্ছে। এইসব বাণী যত বেশি করে মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছবে ততই মানবসমাজ

উন্নত ও উন্মুক্ত হবে। এই ছবি আমাদের প্রাণে আশা জাগায়। ইতিপূর্বে বাউল ফকিরি গান, তাদের জীবন ও দর্শন এসব নিয়ে প্রচুর চর্চা হয়েছে, লেখা হয়েছে অনেক বই, উপেন্দ্রনাথ ভট্টাচার্য থেকে সুধীর চক্রবর্তী, শক্তিনাথ ঝা এক্ষেত্রে উল্লেখযোগ্য কাজ করেছেন। এছাড়াও তৈরি হয়েছে অনেক তথ্যচিত্র ও পূর্ণ দৈর্ঘ্যের ছবি, বাংলাদেশের তানভীর মোকাম্মেল কিংবা পশ্চিমবঙ্গের ল্যাডলী মুখোপাধ্যায় একাধিক চলচ্চিত্র তৈরি করেছেন। শিক্ষিত নাগরিক সমাজের কাছে বাউল বিষয়টিকে প্রথম তু লে ধরার কাজটি করেছিলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকু র। শিলাইদহে তাঁর জমিদারিতে যাতায়াত ও অবস্থানের সময় সেই অঞ্চলের বাউলদের সঙ্গে পরিচিত ছিলেন। তিনিই প্রথম লালন ফকিরের কয়েকটি গান 'প্রবাসী' পত্রিকায় প্রকাশ করে শিক্ষিত সমাজে প্রচার করেন। শিলাইদহের ডাকপিয়ন গগন হরকরা রচিত 'আমি কোথায় পাবো তারে/আমার মনের মানুষ যে রে' এই গানটি সংগ্রহ করেন। বাউল গানের কথা ও সুরের প্রভাবে তিনি নিজেও বেশ কিছু গান রচনা করেছেন। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকু রের লেখায় রয়েছে, 'দেখেছি একতারাহাতে চলেছে গানের ধারা বেয়ে/ মনের মানুষের সন্ধান

বননবগ্রামে গড়ে উঠেছে বাউল আশ্রম

করবার/মনের মানুষের সন্ধান করবার/গভীর নির্জন পথে।' এই গভীর নির্জন পথের অতীত ইতিহাসের দিকে চোখ ফেরালে, বাউল শব্দটি কত প্রাচীন তার সন্ধান করতে গিয়ে দেখতে পাওয়া যায়, মধ্যযুগের বাংলা সাহিত্যে বিশেষভাবে কৃ ষ্ণদাস কবিরাজের 'চৈতন্যচরিতামৃত' গ্রন্থে বাউল শব্দটি অনেকবার ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। মালাধর বসু রচিত 'শ্রীকৃ ষ্ণবিজয়' গ্রন্থে এই শব্দটির ব্যবহার প্রথম দেখা যায়। সপ্তদশ শতাব্দীর শেষদিকে বাউল শব্দটি কোনো নির্দি ষ্ট ধর্মসম্প্রদায় লোকেদের বোঝাতে বাংলা ভাষায় প্রবেশ করে। বাউলরা বলেন, 'বা' অর্থাৎ বাতাস বা হাওয়া থেকে বাউল শব্দটি এসেছে। কারণ, বাউলদের সাধনায় শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাসকে নিয়ন্ত্রণের কাজ রয়েছে।

বাউল ফকিরি দর্শন

প্রকৃ তপক্ষে বাউল ফকিরি একটি দর্শন। এই দর্শনের জগতে জাতিগত দিক থেকে হিন্দু ও মুসলমান দুই শ্রেণিরই লোক রয়েছে। মুসলমান জাতির এইসব সাধকদের ফকির বলা হয় এবং হিন্দু জাতির সাধকদের বলা হয় বাউল। বাউল ফকির সাধনা ও সংগীত জাতপাতের উর্দ্ধে উঠে বিভেদমুক্ত এক মানবসমাজের কথা প্রচার করে। ভালোবাসাই সেখানে শেষ কথা। বাংলার এই প্রাণের গান মূলত নিজেকে জানা ও বোঝার কথা বলে। চৈতন্যদেবের ভক্তিবাদ ছিল বাংলার প্রথম সমাজসংস্কার আন্দোলন। বাউলরা মনে করেন যে, চৈতন্যদেব বাউল ধর্মের মহাগুরু। কৃ ষ্ণদাস কবিরাজের 'চৈতন্যচরিতামৃত' গ্রন্থে বাউল ধর্মের তত্ত্ব প্রচ্ছন্ন রয়েছে বলে তাঁদের অভিমত। বাউল ও ফকিরদের ওপর সুফী ধর্মেরও যথেষ্ট প্রভাব পড়েছে। আল্লা মূল তত্ত্ব। আল্লা থেকে পৃথিবীর সৃষ্টি, সব মানুষের মধ্যে আছে আত্মারূপে আল্লার অবস্থান। এই আত্মারূপী আল্লাকে অনুভব করতে হলে যে সাধনপদ্ধতির প্রয়োজন তাতে হিন্দু ও মুসলমান দুই শ্রেণির সাধকই একই পথের পথিক। বাউল ফকিরি গানের যে ঐতিহ্য তা গুরু-শিষ্য পরম্পরার মাধ্যমে গুরু থেকে শিষ্যদের মধ্যে প্রবাহিত হয়। এই গানকে তিনটি প্রধান ধারায় ভাগ করা যেতে পারে। দেহতত্ত্ব, যেখানে বলা হয় নিজের মধ্যেই চূড়ান্ত সত্য বা ঈশ্বরকে খোঁজার কথা।

আত্মতত্ত্ব, যেখানে বলা হয় শরীরকে পরিচালনার ক্ষেত্রে হৃদয়ের গুরুত্বের কথা, সেই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পথই অনুসন্ধান অথবা আরাধনার বিষয়। গুরুতত্ত্ব, এই তত্ত্বে বলা হয় গুরুই হচ্ছেন ঈশ্বর, সাধনার মাধ্যমে তিনি এই মহিমা অর্জন করেছেন, গুরুর দেখানো পথই অনুসরণ করতে হবে। বাউল ফকিররা গানে গানে বলেন, ধর্ম ও জাতপাতের বিভেদের বদলে মানুষকে ভালোবাসার মধ্যে দিয়ে শান্তি ও ঐক্য খোঁজার কথা। মানুষের মধ্যে ভালোবাসার বাণী ছড়ানোই বাউল ফকিরি গানের মূলকথা। এই ভালোবাসার বার্তা তারা ছড়িয়ে দিতে চান পৃথিবীর সর্বত্র। অগ্রণী সাধক ও গায়ক আব্দুল করিম শাহ বার বার বলেছেন যে, একদিন এই পৃথিবী বাউলের হবে। ২০০৮ সালে ইউনেস্কো-র মানবজাতির ঐতিহ্যবাহী সাংস্কৃ তিক পরম্পরার তালিকায় স্থান পেয়েছে বাংলার বাউল গান। বাউল ফকিরি গানের শিল্পীরা তাঁদের গান নিয়ে পৌঁছে গিয়েছেন পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে। এমনকি বিশ্বসংগীতের সবচেয়ে বড়ো মঞ্চ 'ওমেক্স'-এ সংগীত পরিবেশন করে এসেছেন বীরভূ ম জেলার রীনা দাস বাউল ও তাঁর দল 'রাঙামাটির বাউল'। রীনা কিছু দিন আগেই চেক রিপাব্লিকের 'রেস্পেক্ট ফেস্টিভ্যাল'-এ গেছিল এবং পুজোর আগেই জার্মানিতে ৭টি অনুষ্ঠান করতে চলেছেন। জয়দেবের বিখ্যাত বাউল প্রয়াত তারক খ্যাপার দুই ছেলে সাধু দাস বাউল এবং কাঙাল খ্যাপা ২০১৯-২০-তে লন্ডনের 'ফাগুন ফেস্ট'-এ পরপর দু-বছর গেছে।

২০১৩ সাল থেকে এই রাজ্যে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের ক্ষু দ্র, ছোটো ও মাঝারি শিল্প উদ্যোগ এবং বস্ত্র দপ্তর ও ইউনেস্কো-র তত্ত্বাবধানে শুরু হয়েছে রুরাল ক্রাফট অ্যান্ড কালচারাল হাব (আরসিসিএইচ) প্রকল্প। বর্ত মানে এই প্রকল্পের আওতায় রাজ্য জুড়ে ৫০,০০০ হস্তশিল্পী ও লোকশিল্পী অন্তর্ভু ক্ত হয়েছেন, তাতে ২০০০-এর বেশি বাউল ফকির রয়েছেন।

পশ্চিমবঙ্গে নদীয়া, বীরভূ ম, পূর্ব বর্ধমান, মুর্শিদাবাদ এবং বাঁকু ড়া জেলায় মূলত বাউল ফকিররা থাকেন। নদীয়া জেলার গোরভাঙা ও মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার জলঙ্গী এবং হরিহরপাড়ায় রয়েছে সম্পদকেন্দ্র বা রিসোর্স সেন্টার। জেলায় জেলায় রয়েছে অনেক আখড়া। দেশবিদেশ থেকে সারা বছর ধরেই অনেক মানুষ আসেন বাউল ফকিরদের বসবাস রয়েছে এমনসব গ্রামে। গত ২০১০ সাল থেকে বাংলানাটক ডট কম বার্ষিক বাউল ফকির মেলার আয়োজন করে আসছে। ২০২০ সালে পূর্ব বর্ধমান জেলার আউশগ্রাম ব্লকের বননবগ্রামে গড়ে উঠেছে বাউল আশ্রম, এখানে নিয়মিতভাবে প্রত্যেক সপ্তাহান্তে বাংলার বিভিন্ন জেলার বিভিন্ন আখড়া থেকে বাউল ফকির শিল্পীরা এসে থাকেন ও গানবাজনা করেন। বর্ত মানে সেখানে প্রতি বছর নভেম্বর মাসে বাউল ফকির মেলার আয়োজন করা হয়। এবছরের বাউল ফকির মেলা আগামী ২৪-২৬ নভেম্বর। গান রেকর্ডিং করে অনেকগুলি সিডি প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে, ইউটিউব মাধ্যমে সেইসব গানগুলি সহজেই শ্রোতারা শুনতে পারেন। তৈরি হয়েছে বেশ কিছু স্বল্প দৈর্ঘ্যের তথ্যচিত্র। এইভাবে তথ্য ও গান সংরক্ষণের পাশাপাশি ব্যাপকভাবে প্রশিক্ষণের আয়োজন করা হয়েছে। বর্ষীয়ান গুরু ও শিল্পীরা প্রশিক্ষণ দিয়েছেন পরবর্তী প্রজন্মের শিল্পীদের। এই প্রশিক্ষণের উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রভাব পড়েছে সামগ্রিকভাবেই। এই প্রশিক্ষণ শিবিরগুলিতে শুধুমাত্র মহাজনদের গানই শেখানো হয়েছে। পাশাপাশি মহাজনদের জীবনী বিষয়ে

জানানো হয়েছে। মহাজনদের সক্ষিপ্ত জীবনী অবলম্বনে 'মহাজননামা' নামে একটি বই এবং মহাজনদের গানের সংকলন 'সহজগীতি' প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। এই বই দুটি পৌঁছে গিয়েছে সমস্ত বাউল ফকিরদের কাছে। এছাড়াও প্রশিক্ষণের ক্ষেত্রে বাউলরা সাধারণত একতারা, দোতারা, ডু বকি, ঢোল, খোল, মঞ্জিরা, খঞ্জনি, বাঁশি, খমক ইত্যাদি যেসব বাদ্যযন্ত্র ব্যবহার করেন শুধুমাত্র সেগুলোকেই প্রাধান্য দেওয়া হয়েছে। প্রশিক্ষণের সামগ্রিক প্রভাব হিসেবে আজকে দেখা যাচ্ছে যে, মহাজনদের গানই এখন বেশি করে গাওয়া হচ্ছে। গানের আগে শিল্পীরা মহাজনদের বিষয়ে দু-চার কথা বলছেন। গানের কথা ও সুরের ক্ষেত্রে কোনোরকম বিকৃ তি ঘটছে না। সবচেয়ে বড়ো কথা প্রচুর সংখ্যক তরুণ প্রজন্মের শিল্পী উঠে এসেছেন, তাঁরা নিজেদের উন্নত করছেন এবং এই পথে এগিয়ে চলেছেন। এই তরুণ প্রজন্মই বাউল ফকিরি গানের আগামী দিনের ভবিষ্যৎ। তাদের গানে গানেই এগিয়ে যাবে বাংলার ঐতিহ্যবাহী বাউল ও ফকির গান।

ডাঃ পাঞ্চজন্য ঘটক

এঁ রা বিলেতে বাঙালিয়ানা প্রকাশের খুব একটা চেষ্টা করতেন বলে খবর পাওয়া যায় না। অভিবাসীদের চিত্র ভারতের স্বাধীনতার পর ধীরে ধীরে পাল্টে যেতে থাকে। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর ব্রিটেনে নানাধরনের মানুষের প্রয়োজন হয়। যুদ্ধ বিধ্বস্ত ব্রিটেন গড়ে তু লতে অর্থের অভাব না থাকলেও, অভাব ছিল মানুষের। কারখানায়, হাসপাতালে, ট্রান্সপোর্টে কাজের জন্য ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশ থেকে দলে দলে মানুষ আসতে থাকেন। আসতে থাকেন মানুষ ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ থেকে। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিদের অভিবাসনের ধরণ একটু অন্যরকম। মূলত ডাক্তার ও কিছু ইঞ্জিনিয়ার, অধ্যাপক ৫০-৬০ এর দশকে ব্রিটেনে আসতে থাকেন। অন্যান্যদের মতো বাঙালিদের চাক বেঁধে থাকার সুযোগ কম ছিল। চাকরির খাতিরে ব্রিটেনের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় এঁ রা ছড়িয়ে পড়েন। দেশটি আয়তনে ছোট। দ্রুতগামী যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থার জন্য আশেপাশের বাঙালিদের ভেতর সামাজিক সম্পর্ক গড়ে ওঠে। নানা ভাবে সংঘবদ্ধ হতে থাকেন। কিছু বাঙালি একজোট হলেই দুর্গাপুজো চালু করে দেন। ব্রিটেনেও তার ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি। স্বাধীনতার আগে ব্রিটেনে দুর্গাপুজো হতো এমন খবর পাওয়া যায় না। স্বাধীনতার পর ব্রিটেনের বাঙালিদের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি অনেকটাই পাল্টে যায়। নিজেদের স্বকীয়তা প্রকাশ করতে থাকেন ধীরে ধীরে। সাংস্কৃ তিকধার্মিক-সামাজিক ক্ষেত্রে। এখন ব্রিটেনে প্রায় ৭০টি দুর্গাপুজো হয়। এবার একটু zoom ইন করা যাক ২০০৯ সালে। লন্ডন শারদ উৎসব ভারতের বাইরে অন্যতম বড়ো পুজো। ২০০৯ থেকে এই সংস্থা তাঁদেরপুজো শুরু করেন ইলিং টাউন হলে। নতু ন প্রজন্মের বাঙালিদের জন্ম স্বাধীন ভারতে। বাঙালিয়ানা প্রকাশে এঁ রা দ্বিধা করেন না। ব্রিটিশ সরকারও multi - cultural Britain গড়ে তু লতে উৎসাহী। উৎসাহী বিভিন্ন ধরনের মানুষের নিজস্বতা বজায় রাখায়। আগে দেখা যেতো গানের মঞ্চে বাঙালিকে স্যুট-টাই পরে তবলায় ঠেকা দিতে।এখন কাজ-করা পাঞ্জাবিপায়জামা বা ধুতি পরে আসরে নামেন বাঙালি। ২০২১ এ কেমব্রিজের রাস্তায়, ২০২৩ সালে ট্রাফালগার স্কয়ারে প্রভাত ফেরিতে সামিল হন বাঙালি নারী লাল পাড় শাড়ী পরে। পুরুষরা পরেছিলেন ধুতি। United Kingdom Bengali Convention এর অংশ হিসেবে।

সুদীপ্ত মণ্ডল

ঠাকু র পুজো অফিসে ঢোকার পর সকালের কফিটা সুমিতের জন্য খুবই স্পেশাল। কফি নিয়ে সোজা নিজের ডেস্কে আসে, ডেস্কটা একটা কাঁচের দেওয়ালের পাশে, চোখ তু ললেই সামনে টাওয়ার ব্রিজ আর টেমস্‌সাথে বেশ খানিকটা লন্ডন শহর। ঠিক সকাল ৯:১২ তে টাওয়ার ব্রিজ খুলে যায় আর একটা বড় “ভেসেল বোট” (এক প্রকার জাহাজ বলা যায় বাংলায়) গ্রিনউইচ এর দিকে দুলতে দুলতে চলে যায়। আবার ঠিক সেই গতিতে ফিরে আসে বিকেল ৫:২৮এ, তখন আবার টাওয়ার ব্রিজ খোলে। সুমিতের মনে হয় ঠিক যেন সকালে কেউ অনেক দূরে কাজে যায়, আর সন্ধ্যে নামার আগে কাজ থেকে বাড়ি ফিরে আসে। এই দুটো সময় সুমিত চেষ্টা করে ডেস্কে থাকতে - সুমিত, কফি আর শ্রমিক জাহাজ। ভাবনাগুলো যেন টেমস্‌এর জলের মতন দুলতে থাকে। লন্ডনে শরৎকাল কলকাতার মতন দুর্গাপুজো মনে করিয়ে দেয় না। এখানে এখন “অটম বা ফল্‌”, গাছের পাতা ঝরতে শুরু করেছে, আকাশে রোদ মাঝে মাঝে উঁকি মারে। অক্টোবরের হাওয়া এখন একটু ঠাণ্ডা-ই বটে। আজ সকালে গরম কফিটা নিয়ে বসার পর

একটা ইমেল নোটিফিকেশান এল ফোনে, বেলুর মঠ থেকে। বছরে দুবার আসে এই ইমেল। একবার শ্রীরামকৃ ষ্ণর জন্মতিথিতে, আরেকবার এই দুর্গাপুজোর আগেই। ইমেলটা আর খোলেনি সুমিত। প্রত্যেক বছর এই ইমেলটা অনেক কিছু মনে করিয়ে দেয়। বেলুর মঠের সাথে পরিচয় দাদুর হাত ধরে অনেক ছোটবেলায়। সুমিতের দাদুর কাছে শ্রীরামকৃ ষ্ণ ছিলেন সব কিছু র ওপরে, দাদু বেলুর মঠ থেকে দীক্ষা নিয়েছিল। দাদু চলে যাওয়ার পর দাদুর স্মৃতিতে সুমিত প্রতি বছর একটা ডোনেশান করে আর তার জন্য বেলুর মঠের সব অনুষ্ঠানের নিমন্ত্রন পত্র আসে। মনে পরে যখন ছু টিতে দাদুর বাড়ি যেত, রোজ সকালে ঘুম ভাঙত্ ‌শ্রীরামকৃ ষ্ণর ভক্তিগীতি শুনে। ঠাকু রঘর থেকে ভেসে আসতো অপূর্ব এক ধুপকাটির গন্ধ, আজও মনে আছে সেই গন্ধ। ঘুম ঘুম চোখে সুমিত গিয়ে দেখত দাদু বসে পড়ছে শ্রীরামকৃ ষ্ণর কথামৃত।

প্রত্যেক বছর দুর্গাপুজোর ছু টিতে দাদুর বাড়িতেই থাকত সুমিত। প্রত্যেক বছর দাদুর সাথে বেলুর মঠে কু মারি পুজো দেখতে যাওয়াটা ছিল বাধ্যতামূলক। সে এক অপরূপ আয়োজন, দাদুর সাথে সুমিত ও অনেক কাজ করত বেলুর মঠে সারাদিন। দাদু বলতো “জানিস

মা-বাবা বাঙালি, ওরা এদেশে এসেছিল পিএইচডি করতে - তারপর আর দেশে ফেরেনি। শুভ্ ‌লন্ডনেই জন্মেছে, আন্তর্জাতিক প্রবাসী বাঙালি। এই অফিসে নতু ন, খুব প্রাণবন্ত একটা ছেলে। কাল থেকে শুভ্ ‌ ছু টিতে, ইন্ডিয়া যাচ্ছে। সুমিত জিজ্ঞাসা করল “কোথায় যাচ্ছ এবার? গোয়া? নাকি তাজমহল দেখতে?” সুমিতের দোষ নয়, এর আগে অনেকেই দেশ নিয়ে প্রশ্ন করে, ভারতের ইতিহাস পড়ে, তারপর হয় যায় গোয়া নাহলে তাজমহল দেখতে।

বেলুর মঠে কু মারি পুজো

এই দিন দেশ-বিদেশের অনেক জায়গা থেকে অনেক মানুষ আসে এই কু মারি পুজো দেখতে”। সুমিত হেঁ সে একবার বলেছিল- “কই আমার স্কু লে জিগ্যেস করলাম, কলকাতা থেকেই আমার বন্ধু রা আসে না এখানে, আর তু মি বলছো দেশ-বিদেশ থেকে মানুষ আসে ? ”দাদু সেই দিন হেঁ সে বলেছিল- “ঠাকু রের মায়া অপরূপ, যখন বড় হবে ঠিক বুঝবে”। দাদু মারা গেছে বেশ কিছু বছর। সুমিত এখন স্বপরিবারে লন্ডন নিবাসী। চুলে অল্প পাক ধরেছে, বেতন বেড়েছে, বেড়েছে দায়িত্ত। বছরে একবার পরিবার নিয়ে কলকাতা যাওয়া হলেও, বেলুর মঠ আর যাওয়া হয়নি সুমিতের। কলকাতার ঝটিকা সফরে বন্ধু দের সাথে দেখা করা, নতু ন জাঁকজমকে সাজানো শপিং মল আর রেস্ত্রপাব গুলো ঘুরেই ছু টি শেষ হয়ে যায়। কিন্তু প্রতি বছর বেলুর মঠ থেকে আসা এই কু মারি পুজোর নিমন্ত্রনটা ভাঙ্গা ভাঙ্গা অনেক কিছু মনে করিয়ে দেয়। আজ এই ভাবে কাজের মাঝে অনেক কিছু ভাবতে ভাবতে পুরো দিনটা কেটে গেল। অক্টোবরে লন্ডনে সন্ধ্যে একটু তাড়াতাড়ি নামে - আকাশ এখন গোধূলি রঙে রাঙিয়েছে। এবার একটা কফি নিয়ে, ল্যাপটপটা ব্যাগে পুরে বাড়ীর জন্য রওনা দেবে সুমিত। কফিটা নিয়ে সবে বসেছে, এর মধ্যে ঝড়ের মত শুভ্ ‌ এসে হাজির তার ডেস্কে। পুরো নাম শুভদীপ - ওর

শুভ্ ‌বলল ”আরে না না, এবারে একটু অন্য প্লান। এবার কলকাতা যাবো দাদুর কাছে আর এই প্রথমবার বেলুরমঠ যাবো দাদুর সাথে কু মারি পুজো দেখতে। আমার দাদু প্রত্যেক কু মারি পুজোতে পুরোদিন বেলুরমঠে মহারাজদের সাথে সারাদিন জনসেবা করে। দাদুর মুখে অনেক গল্প শুনেছি কু মারি পুজোর, কিন্তু স্কু ল-ইউনিভারসিটির চক্করে ছু টি পাইনি, তাই দেখাও হয়নি। তাই এই প্রথম বার ছু টি নিয়ে যাচ্ছি কু মারি পুজো দেখতে। আমার ফিয়ানসি জেমা ও যাচ্ছে আমার সাথে, ও খুব এক্সসাইটেড এই পুরো ব্যাপারটাতে।”

বেলুরমঠে মহারাজেরা

শুভ্ ‌তারপর কখন চলে গেছে সুমিত খেয়ালই করেনি। বিকেলের কফিটাও ঠান্ডা হয়ে গেছে। একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে আছে সুমিত টেমসের দিকে। টাওয়ার ব্রিজটা আবার খুলেছে আর সেই জাহাজ ফিরে যাচ্ছে। সুমিতের হঠাৎ মনে পরলো ছোটবেলায় শোনা দাদুর গলায় শ্রীরামকৃ ষ্ণর ভক্তিগীতির দুটো পংক্তি… “রামকৃ ষ্ণ নামে জোয়ার এলো, ভাসিয়ে দে না তরী, রাম ভক্তি উথলে ওঠে, আহা মরি মরি”…

Bengal Heritage Foundation Events Winter is the season of homecoming to Bengal for Bengalis living abroad. ‘Probashis’ or Non Resident Indian Bengalis of Bengal Heritage Foundation has made it an annual ritual to not only visit Bengal but also organise a bouquet of cultural and sporting events in Kolkata every winter working closely with their partners the British Deputy High Commission, the British Council, The Bengal and the Indo British Scholars’ Association.

PROBASHIR PRONAAM A tribute to the elderly, was the cultural showcase with the non-resident and resident Bengalis coming together to show the love and care for the elderly. The programme was hosted by the immaculate Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee at the exquisite G D Birla Sabhaghar. The afternoon kicked off with songs by members of ‘Pronaam’ – a joint initiative for the elderly by Kolkata Police and The Bengal. The Bengal Heritage Foundation music team presented melodious songs from the golden generation of Bengal mesmerising the audienc, followed by the staging of a dark comedy – ‘Nobo Norok Guljaar’. Inspired by Manoj Mitra’s 70s classic ‘Norok Guljaar’, the play was a take on Covid chaos. The audience rose on its feet to give a standing ovation at the end of performance.

BENGAL HERITAGE DINNER BHF hosted its annual get-together on 27th Dec at The British Club, British Deputy High Commission, Calcutta.

The event was sponsored by BHF's strategic corporate partner HSBC India. A panel discussion, on the idea of the ‘living bridge’ between India and the UK, was moderated by BHF's Sourav Niyogi and the panellists included Nick Low, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata; Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India; Subrata Paul, IBSA; Saibal Ghosh, HSBC India; and Debanjan Chakrabarti, British Council India.

BHF’s resolution to digitise Bengali theatre - now realised, thanks to support from director-actor Koushik Sen, Calcutta Broadway and theatre group Swapnasandhani. Riddhi Sen, the protagonist, unveiled the trailer of the first play to be digitised, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. BHF’s Amit Guha spoke about BHF's involvement in the conservation of built heritage in Bengal: supporting the restoration of terracotta temples; supporting efforts to digitise terracotta temple photographs by Hitesranjan Sanyal.

INDO-BRITISH HERITAGE CUP The iconic Eden Garden, Kolkata hosted an exhibtion cricket match between the ‘India in the UK' team and ‘UK in India’ team, a living bridge event between the two countries marking the rich heritage of the game in the two countries. For the third time in a row, Team ’India in the UK’ took home the HSBC Indo-British Heritage Cup by getting the better of Team ’UK in India’ — their second victory in as many years at the Eden Gardens.

Defending a total of 176 in 20 overs, India in the UK just about held their line and length, as well as their nerve, to secure a win by nine runs. "We lost by virtually the same margin as England to Australia on the same ground 35 years ago (England had lost by seven runs).” said Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India, whose neat 25 off 32 for UK in India was not as slow as his opponents would have him believe. Amalendu Biswas, Vice President (CAB) and Debabrata Das, Hony Joint Secretary (CAB) graced the occasion.

NETAJI JAYANTI & REPUBLIC DAY High Commission of India London remembered Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on “Parakram Diwas”. Bengal Heritage Foundation joined the special event on 23rd Jan at India House. Floral tributes were paid to the portrait of Netaji by the High Commissioner, Vikram Doraiswami, and Dy High Commisioner, Sujit Ghosh, followed by a lecture on Netaji’s military campaign by Vijay Rana.

The BHF music team (Anamika, Ani, Arunava, Riddhi, Suranjan and Tanusree) rendered patriotic songs which were Netaji's favourites on the occassion- Dhono Dhanno Pushp Bhara, Kadam Kadam Badhae ja, Subh Sukh Chain and concluded with group singing of National Anthem!

India’s 74th Republic Day was celebrated by High Commission of India, London at the gorgeous Guildhall, London on 26th Jan. Bengal Heritage Foundation was delighted to join the celebrations.

SARASWATI PUJA | VIVEKANANDA AND NETAJI TRIBUTE

Bengal Heritage Foundation celebrated an exclusive members only Saraswati Pujo with a lot of zest. This being the first event of the year, all the members were seen gathering at Harrow Art Centre on 29th January 2023. Our Pujo had all the elements of a homely Saraswati Pujo with pushpanjali, kids hathe-khori (ceremony to introduce education to young children) and bhog. BHF Kids created handmade paper chains to decorate the venue. BHF Kids paid tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda. The kids also presented a bouquet of beautiful songs and dance performances later on, which were the highlights of the evening. ‘Joy of Giving - Clothing Drive’ initiative was launched in the same event, BHF joined hands with Calcutta Rescue, to donate clothes of BHF members’ to be sent to underprivileged families in Kolkata.

FAGUN FEST Bengal Heritage Foundation welcomed spring with their 5th successful edition of Fagun Fest, one of the key and flagship BHF events. It started with an objective to enable UK India exchange in creative art and crafts, showcase Indian rural art forms to the UK and global audience. This year on 31st March, folk music performances from East and North East India across Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Manipur and Orissa enthralled the audience at Nehru Centre London.

INDIA MELA BHF organised an India Mela on 13th August 2023, to celebrate the 14 small-to-medium entrepreneurs who provided amazing festive shopping and entertainment opportunities for families and kids. The smile on the entrepreneurs face after good sales during the Sharad Mela made our day. It marked a great start to the festive season.

INDIAN SUPERFANS LEAGUE UK AND INDIA MELA The Bengal Heritage Foundation (BHF) celebrated 75th year of Indian Independence in Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by organising the third annual edition of Indian Superfans League UK (ISL UK) community football tournament on 13th August at Arbour Park, Slough. The tournament is supported by the High Commission of India in the UK, the tournament promotes community for the Indian diaspora and British citizens.

The eight fan clubs that participated in the tournament were East Bengal Fans, Mohun Bagan Fans, Odisha FC Fans, FC Goa Fans, Chennaiyin FC Fans, Kerala Blasters Fans, High Commission of India (HCI) and Bengal Heritage Foundation. There were also two six-a-side exhibition matches, between BHF Mohun Bagan Fans and BHF East Bengal Fans. FC Goa Fans went on an unbeaten run to be crowned champions triumphing against Kerala Blasters Fans in the finals. The FA accredited tournament was officiated by licensed referees affiliated to the Football Association (FA) in England.

RABINDRA JAYANTI Celebrating the birth anniversary of the great Bengali poet, scholar, novelist, playwright, humanist, philosopher, and Nobel laureate—Rabindranath Tagore has been a major BHF calendar event. And that too at India House and Nehru Centre, London on behalf of the High Commission of India. This year, we focused on the fillial relationship between Tagore and his son in "Rabi O Rathi, presented by the interdisciplinary artist, Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee. It is a dramatic narration featuring a dialogue between Rabindranath and his son Rathindranath Tagore. This was followed by "Tomarei Koriachi Jibonero Dhrubotara", where we explored the intricacies of love as depicted in Tagore's various mellifluous songs and poems. Over 25 BHF members enthused the audience with their fascinating performances.

DWARKANATH TAGORE : TRIBUTE TO INDIA'S PIONEERING ENTREPRENEUR & PHILANTHROPIST

Bengal Heritage Foundation remembered and celebrated the pioneering Dwarkanath Tagore at his final resting place at Kensal Green Cemetery in London on 19th August 2023. The occasion was graced by Debashish Nayak, Founder Director of Centre for Heritage Management, Ahmedabad and a pioneer in Urban Heritage Conservation in India. Wreaths were placed on the monument to Dwarkanath Tagore by members of Bengal Heritage Foundation.

INDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS AT HCI AND MELA Bengal Heritage Foundation celebrated the Indian Independence Day at HCI and also participated at the Independence Mela at Navnat Centre, London on 26th August 2023. BHF’s next generation came forward to spread awareness and fundraise to support education expenses for underprivileged children in Sunderbans, which was well received by the Indian diaspora. Our stall graced the presence of the High Commissioner of India, London, Vikram Doraiswamy and the Cllr Hitesh Tailor, Mayor of Ealing amongst others. Furthermore, Bengal Heritage Foundation was felicitated by the High Commission of India, London for participating in the Independence Mela.
