Message from Prime Minister Bill English: India Independence Day 2017 Namaste aur shubh kamanae.

I would like to extend my best wishes for the 71st India Independence Day, and I hope you enjoy the celebrations with your family and friends.

We have a supportive and diverse ethnic culture in New Zealand. As Prime Minister, I’m grateful for the opportunity we have to celebrate everything the Indian culture has to offer.

Our Indian New Zealanders contribute widely to the overall success of our nation, through business, sport, and arts and culture.

The 71st anniversary of India Independence Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the long-standing and broad relationship New Zealand and India share.

The connections between our two countries are well developed, and India is a leading source of skilled migrants, international students and tourists.

We work together on a number of joint interests such as cyber security, counterterrorism, customs, education and food safety.

Over the past five years, our economic relationship has grown significantly and twoway trade has increased by a third.

I am committed to ensuring the voice of the Indian community in New Zealand is heard at the highest levels of government, helped by National MPs Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and Dr Parmjeet Parmar.

Namaste, Satsriakal, Assalamu alaikum Greetings I would like to send my congratulations to the New Zealand Indian community as it celebrates India’s Independence Day. I would also thank Bhartiya Samaj for all its good works in the Auckland community.

India has undergone many changes since gaining independence in 1947. Let us hope that it will continue to progress and find solutions to all its problems and continue on a path for prosperity for all its citizens, irrespective of their religion, caste, region or language.

It is a day to remember and pay tribute to all the great Indian leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and the massive independence movement noted for largely nonviolence resistance and civil disobedience.

For Labour, it’s important to recognise that the Indian community is now one of the fastest growing in New Zealand. There are more than 155,000 Indians living in the country and India is important to New Zealand as it is our main supplier of skilled migrants.

So I would like to thank you for bringing to this country the gift of your rich and diverse culture and history, your hard work and strong values. New Zealand is a stronger nation because of our ethnic diversity, and not in spite of it.

At the outset, Bhartiya Samaj congratulates all Indians living in India and across the globe on the auspicious occasion of 71st Independence Day of India. At Bhartiya Samaj, our friends from various nationalities join the Indian community, the second largest ethnic group in New Zealand, to celebrate this remarkable event year after year. We will be celebrating this years’ Independence day on Sunday, the 13th of August 2017.

Independence Day marks an event of immense historical significance for us and the country. The spirit of Independence Day has just not been only about India’s freedom but also about celebrating our core values, rich history and cultural diversity that the country has for so long preserved and added in spite of long spell of foreign rule. As Indians, we take pride in having taken birth in Independent India. As we remember all the struggle and sacrifices of our revolutionaries and freedom fighters in achieving freedom, we also thank our great leaders for giving us the land of peace which has rich culture and heritage.

Our community has grown remarkably well in New Zealand making a substantial contribution by enthusiastically participating in the overall growth of the nation. It is an honour and great pleasure to celebrate this Freedom day of India in the land of the long white cloud (Aotearoa) we now call our new home. Along with the other communities and Community Welfare Organisations in Auckland region we celebrate the great and historic day.

The past year has seen Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust achieve several milestones in contributing towards the community and society at large in developing various healthy lifestyle programmes for seniors, children and youth. We are a family of fun-loving, contended and empathetic members who are full of life.

Our enthusiasm helps us to create an environment of purpose and growth. Our sincere intention to support and embrace every individual who is joining and participating in the community gives us the feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction. We strive to create more such opportunities to reach the broader section of society from different phase of life.

71st India Independence Day Celebrations Kia ora, Namaste I would like to extend our best wishes to the Indian community for the 71st India Independence celebrations. We join with all of you in observing this special day. It is an important celebration to commemorate the birth of a free and democratic nation.

The Human Rights Commission of New Zealand works for a free, fair, safe and just New Zealand, where diversity is valued and human dignity and rights are respected. One of my key roles, as the Race Relations Commissioner, is to foster harmonious relations amongst all New Zealanders. Organisations such as the Bharatiya Samaj Charitable Trust has been essential in supporting our work on the ground with Indian communities. Congratulations to all my fellow Kiwis of Indian origin and Indians all around the world on India’s Independence Day Anniversary! I thank Bhartiya Samaj for the work they do for the Indian community in Auckland. Bhartiya Samaj has been working hard in the Indian community for several years and it is always a pleasure to be part of Bhartiya Samaj’s Indian Independence Day celebrations.

I am very proud of the progress that India has made since its independence. I pay homage to those millions of people who fought for India’s Independence, for if they didn’t, our growth as a nation and ethnicity would not be where it is today. Independence Day celebrations also give us the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our vibrant culture, heritage and aspirations. Waitakere Indian Association On the night of 14 August, 1947, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, gave the historical, “Tryst with Destiny” speech: “Long years ago we made a tryst (date) with destiny (fate), and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. ” That was 71 years ago, but even today, we treasure that day -15 August 1947. As we mark India’s Independence, the Indian Diaspora marks this day spread around in the world.

Waitakere Indian Association is managed by Indo-Fijians whose ancestors came as indentured labourers to Fiji from Indian between 1879 and 1916. Despite being torn away from India for over 135 years, Indo-Fijians today still feel their umbilical cord buried in India, and their association to India is everlasting. They say blood is thicker than water. And as Indian Diaspora, we salute India on its 70th year going into independence – To India with love, from grandchildren and great grandchildren in New Zealand.

Indian Diaspora in their own ways and own time marks this day. Waitakere Indian Association will mark this day on 15 August 2017 by raising Indian flag some 10,000 miles away from India.

We acknowledge Bhartiya Samaj and other Association and organisations that got together to mark this auspicious day. We especially salute all the freedom fighters and many unknown heroes who started this struggle long time ago.

We wish India all the best with their step into 71 years of Independence, and hope the dreams of those freedom fighters will not go in vain.

बाबू जी परे शान क्यों

का झटका में आ गए मैं ज़रा बाबू जी अपने कमरे में चहल कदमी कर रहे थे ,न ही उन्होंने कपड़े बदले न ही खाना खाया ,हा​ाँ दस बारह कप चाय के पी चुके थे . उनकी परे शानी उनको चेन ही नही लेने दे रही थी .

आज बरसों के बाद उनकी तबीयत कुछ ठीक हुई थी ,उनसे rest home में बेठा ही नही जा रहा था .सोचने लगे आज कुछ भी

अपने बच्चों से ज़रूर ममलकर आऊंगा ,वेसे आज का ददन भी कुछ खास

ये सोच कर उनका चेहरा गुलाब की तरह खखल गया , जल्दी जल्दी नहा कर सबसे

शीशे के सामने खड़े हो गये .मन में सोचने लगे इतनी बीमारी के बाद भी मेरी शकल ठीक लग रही

. सामने पड़ी क्रीम को

अपने चेहरे पर मला कपड़ो पर परफ्यूम लगाया ,फिर एक बार शीशे में दे ख कर चल पड़े अपने बेटे के घर | सोचा इतने ददनों बाद जा रहा हूाँ छोटे छोटे

हैं खली हाथ केसे जाऊ .रस्ते से choclate का पैकेट उठा मलया और चल पड़े अपनी मस्तानी

घर के बाहर पहुाँच कर मकान को दे खा फकतना बड़ा घर

कहा​ाँ पड़ा हुआ था | घर वालों ने पपता को आया दे ख कर बड़े

और पतनीं को बुलाया सब ने बड़े चाव से पापा का स्वागत फकया ,इतना भरा घर

दे ख कर ख़ुशी दे ख कर लगा कुछ भी तो नही बदला सब फकतना प्यार करते हे मुझे ,केसे मुझे पलको पर बबठा रहे हे | बेटा तो पपता के पास ही बेठ गया पूछने लगा हालचाल .बाप बेटे में बहुत इतने साल अपनों से दरू रहा | चलो जो हो गया सो हो गया

हुई ,पपता मन ही मन सोचने लगा

सा खुश हो कर गया था मेरी भी तो तबीयत ठीक नही

थी |

खाने का वक़्त हो गया बहु ने कहा अब आ जाओ खाना तेयार हो गया

,बेटे ने पपता का हाथ पकड कर उठाया और आ कर

गये टे बल पर | खाना क्या था सारा टे बल ही भरा था अलग अलग पकवानों से भीनी भीनी खुशबू से जुबान पर

control नही हो रहा था पपता जी ने सर झुका कर खाना शुरू कर ददया | इससे अच्छी फकस्मत और क्या होती

इतना प्यार इतना अछा खाना और सारा पररवार एक साथ . खाना खाकर पपता

जी ने सर उठाया और कहा ,आज तो मज़ा आ गया इतने सालों के बाद इतना अच्छा खाना खाया कोई जवाब नही ददया सब अपना अपना सर झुकाए

,पर ये क्या फकसी ने

दे ख रहे थे फकसी ने कोई जवाब नही ददया .| पापा जी परे शान

अपने बेटे को ऊाँची आवाज़ में कहा क्या हे कोई बोल नही रहा

बेटे ने कहा पापा ये आज आपके सामने सब बेठे है नही तो ये कब आते है कब जाते हे पता भी नही चलता ,हा​ाँ ये सर नही

झुका रहे ये सब अपने अपने फ़ोन पर लगे हे कोई अपना face बुक up डेट कर रहा हे कोई वतस up पे लगा हे कोई मेसेज

चेक कर रहा हे पापा जमाना बदल गया हे | आप का समय कुछ और था अब समय टे क्नोलॉजी का

आप के वक़्त पर न तो

कंप्यूटर था न cell फ़ोन न ही इतनी चीज़े थी आप का ज़माना पुरातन था आज समय कुछ और आज के दोर में जजतनी सुख

ये सब तो काल्पननक थी आपके ज़माने में हम तो शुक्र करते हें की हम इस ज़माने में पैदा हुये ,वेसे पापा हर चीज़

बाबूजी कमरे में आकर लेट तो गये पर बंद आाँखों के सामने जेसे तेज़ी से चलती हुई पपक्चर दे खने लगे ,जब वो जवान थे

और कॉलेज जन के मलए घर से बाहर जा रहे थे तो अपने पपता जी का गरजता हुआ स्वर सुन कर उनके पांव जम गये क्यों

भाई ये लिंगो की तरह कहा​ाँ जाया जा रहा हे ,तो मैने कहा था पापा कॉलेज और पापा करीब आकर मेरे बालों में उल्टा सीधा हाथ िेर कर कहने लगे ये क्या

और कपड़े केसे पहने

फकसी तरह थूक ननगल कर कह पाया पापा आज कल यही

िैशन हे (वेसे भी वो ज़माना दे वानन्द शम्मी कपूर ,राज कपूर का था ) मैने भी अपनी हे यर स्टाइल और कपडे ठीक हीरो के

हमेशा ज़माना बदलने की दह ु ाई दे ता रहता

जेसे ही बनवाये थे |वेसे भी बात बात पर हम बाप बेटे की तकरार होती रहती .

और पपता जी के गुस्से का मशकार बनता |बार बार यही तकरार पपता जी आप भी बदल जाओ ज़माना बदल गया पपता जी की कभी गमलयां कभी मार ,न पपता जी बदले न

दोस्तों की बाते सुनता रहता वो भी बड़े मजे लेकर कहते और भाई हीरो क्या हाल वाले तो तुझे कुछ करने ही नही दे ते और

उनकी बातें सुन कर शमम से अन्दर ही अन्दर मर जाता ,पर घर वालों को केसे

जनरल नॉलेज हो ,अगर ये नही तो आप दनु नया से बहुत कट जायेंगे | पहले भी तो ज़माना बदला था पर ऐसे नही हमारे जमाने में जो एडल्ट pictures होती थी वो आजकल के चार पांच साल के बच्चे दे ख रहे

मैं क्यों इतना परे शान हो रहा हूाँ पर बाबू जी के ददमाग में जेसे समद ुं का तूिान दहलोरे लेने लग गया |शायद उनका ददमाग कहीं इन सब बातों को स्वीकार नही कर पा रहा था ,वो अपने आप में बडबडाते जा रहे थे उनकी सांसे तेज़ चलने लगी ओए

आवाज़ ने चचलाने का रूप ले मलया था न जाने कब उनकी आंख खुली तो अपने आप को icu में पाया ,पूरा कमरा घर वालो से भरा था लेफकन ख़ामोशी इतनी थी की अगर सई ु भी चगरती तो उसकी आवाज़ आती हा​ाँ उनका बेटा उन के पास बेठा था बच्चें अपने अपने cell िोन पर लगे थे बीच बीच में पूछ रहे थे और फकतनी दे री हे ,पपता जी के कानो में हल्की सी

िुसिुसाने की आवाज़आई बस चंद घंटो के मेहमान

फिर चलते ,बेटा बता रहा था की

अब यहा​ाँ बेठेगा और

जायेगा |

बाबूजी सोचने लगे क्या सच में इन्सान इतना संवेदन हीन हो गया को भी दरफकनार कर ददया

,ये वही पररवार

आज कल की तरकी ने क्या ररश्तों के प्यार मोहब्बत

जो मा​ाँ बाप का दामन कभी नही छोड़ते थे आज पांच ममनटों का भी वक़्त

नही धीरे धीरे बाबुजी के ददमाग ने काम करना बंद कर ददया और बस यही सोचने लगे शायद वो इस दनु नया के जीव ही नही

हैं ,परे शाननया​ाँ इतनी बद गयी की उनकी ऑ ंखें सदा सदा के मलए बंद हो

बाबज ू ी की परे शानी का कारण क्या था उनका बेटा भी नही समझ पाया ?

BHARTIYA SAMAJ MILESTONES AND ACTIVITIES AUGUST 2016- JULY 2017 Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust along with Roopa Aur Aap Charitable Trust, Humm Fm, Shri Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan, and other organisations from many states of India, and neighbouring countries celebrated the 70th India Independence Day at Shri Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan Community Hall with much unparallel zest and galore.

The celebrations started with the hoisting of the Indian Tricolour flag by Mr Vinod Kumar, President NZ Hindu Council; followed with the national anthem of India, and New Zealand by our Bal Vikas (BSCT language and cultural classes) children, and the Bharat Mata image portrayed by Simran Chadha from Bollywood Beats. Furthermore, the trumpet of beginning began with the sound of Desi Dhol, exhilarating our hearts and feet dancing to celebrate the 70 years of Independence.

The activities of Bhartiya Samaj are well recognised and have been enthusiastically appreciated by the wider Indian community, which is rewarding for us.

On this auspicious occasion of 71st Independence day on 15th August 2017, we hereby present to our readers the events that were held during year 2016-2017 on the way towards achieving the desired end results of benefitting the people of our community.

AUGUST 2016: 70TH Independence Day Celebrations The cultural event started with the enticing performances by the performers from various organisations, reflecting the diverse and rich culture of India with great passion and splendour.

Hundreds thronged through the venue to behold the myriad spectacle of young and equally talented senior citizens, showcasing their potentiality to enliven the celebration with vibrancy, peace, 43

prosperity and progress. South Asian community has been actively taking part in every sphere of activities to make New Zealand an outstanding country with vivacious multicultural people living harmoniously.

The celebrations concluded with the community lunch served to everyone present. We sincerely thank everyone for their contribution in this event which carried love to our motherland with feeling of Independence. Highly appreciable were the efforts of participating organisations, performers, sponsors, volunteers and community at large that feverishly supported us to make this event a grand success.

SEPTEMBER 2016: Hon Mrs Sumitra Mahajan’s Visit to NZ

OCTOBER 2016: International Day Of Older Persons International Day of Older persons was celebrated on 1st Oct 2016 with excitement and fun filled meeting of the seniors which also witnessed active participation from the seniors performing Garba (a traditional Indian folk dance) dressed in the traditional attire .The event was also graced by the presence of dignitaries like Dr Parmajeet Parmar (MP for Mt. Roskill), Mr Michael Wood ( Candidate for MP from Labour Party - Mt. Roskill ) and Mr Dev Bhardwaj (Puketapapa Local Board Candidate). All the members and the invited dignitaries danced to the tune of the Indian traditional music.

We started the memorable journey with two busloads of Senior Citizens along with a team of Volunteers from Mt Roskill War Memorial. Taking a break at Gurudwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib, Takanini Auckland we set forth on our journey to Rotorua and reached the hotel by afternoon. The hotel engaging performance followed by spine-tingling arrangement was done at VR Rotorua Lake Resort, version of the world-famous haka and Poi dance. which is located on the shores of beautiful Lake Rotoiti. NOVEMBER 2016: Indian Naval Ship Sumitra Visits NZ The Indian Naval ship INS Sumitra arrived in New Zealand for a six day visit for International Naval Review from 16th Nov 2016-22nd Nov. On 20th November 2016, a reception was hosted by Indian High Commissioner His Excellency Sanjiv Kohli and Vice Admiral HCS Bisht on board of members had an opportunity to experience and explore the 100-year- old Redwood forest from “Redwood Tree walk and the steaming, hissing and bubbling geothermal activity and exciting views of mud pools at “Kuirau Park”. On the final day, we drove to Tauranga that lies along the edge of a beautiful harbour and stopped to watch a spectacular view of Mount Maunganui. From there we drove to “Karangahake Gorge” to relax and admire the beauty of natural sights of the gorge.

Each evening was thoughtfully planned where the members let themselves relax and showed some Indian Naval Ship. It was a privilege and honour real singing and dancing talent. DECEMBER 2016: End of the Year/Christmas Party Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust carried on the age-old tradition of celebrating the end of the year by organizing a “Christmas and End of the Year Party” on 17th December 2016 at Mt Roskill War Memorial hall, Auckland. Our Seniors thronged to the venue excitedly all dressed up in vibrant colors

and Mrs Sadguna Patel to entertain the guest which was appreciated by one and everybody present there. The melodious voice of eminent singer Jagdish Punja Ji singing old time Bollywood songs permeated the entire atmosphere, which

uplifted the moods of our senior members who then danced to the foot tapping beats of the music. Our delegates merrily joined them. The celebrations concluded with delicious lunch served to everyone present. to celebrate the occasion. This fun filled afternoon marked the presence of over 200 Senior citizens and the gracious presence of many eminent guests and dignitaries who have made tremendous contributions to benefit the society.

The stupendous success of the event was a result of undefinable and indefatigable contribution and love of the volunteers, organisers, performers and the community that feverishly supported us to make this event a grand success and help achieve yet another milestone for Bhartiya Samaj.

Entertainment programs, delicious cuisine, live Electrifying atmosphere was overflowing with music and the dance floor were the main attractions words of deep gratitude and admiration for making of this event. A stunning dance performance was the day memorable. put up by our senior members Sr Madhubhai Patel Mr Jeet Suchdev QSM concluded the event by wishing everybody a very happy Christmas and a healthy new year. At the end he exchanged heartfelt greetings and thanked one and all to be a part of our Bhartiya Samaj family in New Zealand.

Bal Vikas Language and cultural school also celebrated the end of the year Party on Sunday 11th December! Fun filled party was organised where children arrived excitedly and brought gifts for the age old Christmas tradition of “Secret Santa”. The party kick started with the kids playing some fun games and dancing to the tunes of their favourite songs. It became a true celebration for the kids who have grown into a cohesive team.

After the games, they turned to having delicious Pizzas which they enjoyed a lot. Lastly, the most 47

exciting part of the celebration “ Secret Santa” started with kids getting their gifts which they hurriedly opened and shared the joy of Christmas.

At the end they took photos and went home filled with cherished memories.

The workshops were well planned and designed aimed to promote emotional development and enrichment of the young minds. The focus was on imparting skills like personality development, leadership, community involvement and tolerance / understanding of multiple culture and ethnicity at an early age through various activities like outdoor sports, art and craft sessions, music, dance, drama workshops, debate, extempore, public speaking and other fun filled activities. It also helped the children open up about their aspirations and dreams Bhartiya Samaj’s Annual Children and Youth and learn about their hidden talents. Trust celebrated the 68th Indian Republic Day with fervour and pride at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall, May Road, Mt Roskill. The event was attended by Senior members and many dignitaries all-proud to celebrate the achievements of our Golden Indian history.

The event commemorated a new season of Senior citizens’ fortnightly meetings, which was happily received and saw over 210 members renewing 48

Celebrations started with showering colourful petals on one another and dancing to the tune of Holi Bollywood music. Few rounds of Tombola with lots of exciting prizes followed this. The meeting ended with a lunch served to everyone.

The entire event concluded by putting on a delicious lunch served to all members and volunteers present at the occasion.

FEBRUARY 2017: “ANTARKHOJ” Ek Atma Manthan by Swami Narayan Sanstha A live stage show event “Antarkhoj-Ek Atma Manthan” was organised by BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir on 18th Feb 2017.

More than 2,000 people gathered at Logan Campbell Centre, the aim was to bring the young generation closer to its cultural roots.

Bhartiya Samaj members had an opportunity to participate in this enlightening experience of Indian Heritage presented through cultural programs and multimedia presentations.. More than 120 members attended this program. The event witnessed over 5000 people, a mix of multicultural society of Auckland who all gathered to celebrate the festival of colors.

Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in New Zealand and Australia to commemorate all New Zealanders who lost their lives at Gallipoli in World War 1 and also to honor the servicemen who returned from the war.

On 25th April 2017 ANZAC day was observed at Mt Roskill War Memorial. Mt Roskill Parade Service organized by Puketapapa Local Board was scheduled to start at 10:00am. APRIL 2017: Protest March against Rising Crime

the World Masters Game visited Auckland In May 2017. At Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust, we had the honour of hosting Sardarni Mann Kaur ji and her son Gurdev Singh ji on 6th May 2017 at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall during Senior Citizens Meeting.

The crime prevention group- a community action group organised a public protest march on Sunday, 30th April at Manukau to send a message to the government on issue of rising crimes. Bhartiya Samaj Members supported the group by joining in big numbers and marched along with more than 500 people from different communities to show their concern towards increased aggravated robberies/crime. An appeal was made to find a practical solution to this severe problem

Gurdev ji shed light on the journey of Mann Kaur ji, and credits her longevity to good food and exercise and advised one and everyone present there to introduce exercise in their daily lives. Sardarni Ji then addressed our seniors delivering some useful tips on healthy living. Afterwards Ella Kumar ji had a wonderful fitness session with the seniors and honoured Guests. JUNE 2017: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Elder abuse is a problem that exists all over the world yet is typically under reported globally.

Therefore, it is very important to equip and educate people to identify and deal with this problem. Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust always strives to take steps towards making the life of seniors a more pleasurable one and giving them credit for the valuable contribution they make towards the development of society. With the same intentions, Bhartiya Samaj observed “World Elder Abuse Awareness day” on 17th June 2017 at Fickling Convention centre, Three kings.

JUNE 2017: International Yoga Day

The day commenced with prayers followed by wishing the senior members who had their birthdays this month.
