With the exception of glycine all amino acids contain chiral carbon atom next to

the carboxyl group of molecules. The presence of chiral carbon atom in amino acid permits the stereoisomerism process. Several naturally occurring vigorous molecules like the amino acids in the proteins also contain chiral atoms; while the sugars are of D type many amino acids exhibit L chirality. The natural proteins that are made of L amino acids are called as left-handed proteins, and those that are made of D amino acids are called right-handed proteins.
