NNI Honey Dipper

NNI Honey Dipper, New and Improved This brand new honey wand was created in inspiration by other honey wands and their diverse, but unussccessful shapes.

Project Statement .

The NNI dipper essentislly has all of the same qualities as a regular wand, but with added “bonuses.� The NNI dipper is joined/detachable from the lid of the jar of honey, blocking the uses hands from any unwanted, sticky contact with the honey and therefore preventing contamination as well. The wand has fifteen tiny grooves, because the thinner and tighter the grooves, the slower and thinner the honey drips, allowing more user control.

Honey Dipper, New and Improved History The honey dipper, having been used since the nineteenth century, seems to have been invented in ancient China by attaching a small pine cone to a stick so as to retrieve honey from a pot without causing a mess. Although its exact origins of design are difficult to establish, the dipper has been proven to be effective and is a staple in many households.

Effectiveness and Usage As stated by the engineering site, Stack Exchange, “Honey dippers work by using the viscosity of the liquid to raise a small amount of the liquid from a reservoir [whereas] spoons work by trapping the small amount of liquid in a gravity well.”

The thick, sticky texture of the honey is easily trapped in the grooves of the stick, making it easy to for the user to “twirl the handle between the thumb and fingers while in transport, to prevent dripping,” as apposed to a spoon, where the honey would easily fall out of the well when twirled around.

Material “The material only needs to allow the thick liquid to adhere [to the grooves while still being] food-safe. Wood was the obvious choice long ago because it was available, cheap, and [had well-established technology accessible] . Other materials available 100s of years ago would have worked too, like walrus tusk or ivory, but those were much more expensive.” Other materials such as metal, though effective, are heavier in weight and therefore, not needed.

Honey collects in gravity well, the one area on the tight goove wand where the honey can easily drip in larger quanitiy into a liquid beverage, like a spoon

Explanatory Sketch

A combination of my initial ideations, this New and Improved honey wand is attachable to its lid to prevent the users hands from getting sticky and also avoid contamination.

With a gravity well in the honey wand, the honey can sit in and be poured out as a spoon
