Steak ‘n Shake is in and Steak Escape is out — and burgers and milkshakes are on the menu.

By Courtney Brown | Campus Editor The new restaurant now sits where Steak Escape used to be in the Falcon’s Nest, and it’s all ready to go. Employees have been hired, food has been bought and University officials are optimistic about its success. “[Steak Escape] was the lowest performer in the Student Union,” Jonathan Zachrich, director of the University’s marketing and communications, said. “The brand was on campus for over 10 years, [where] a brand usually has a life for about 4 to 6 years.”

In response to the low sales, the University’s marketing team sent out a survey

to students last year to see what they wanted, Zachrich said. It turns out they wanted burgers.

In deciding which restaurant to partner with, Zachrich said they had to be sensitive about price, but they also had to pick good quality food with a noticeable brand.

“Steak ‘n Shake had that sweet spot: price, quality, brand,” he said. “We’re expecting it’s going to do a lot better.”

The Steak ‘n Shake restaurant in the Falcon’s Nest will not have all the menu items available at all times like other Steak ‘n Shake restaurants have, however, Zachrich said.

“We can’t do specialty burgers all the time, [so those] burgers are in rotation,” he said.

The most popular items on the restaurant’s menu will be available.

The main reason for not having the full menu always available was mostly due to time constraints, Zachrich said.

“This way they’re not waiting five, six, seven minutes,” he said. “The average wait time is three minutes or less.”

Another restaurant-related idea in the works is the soon-to-be Culinary Studio currently being constructed, Zachrich said.

It’s set to be completed in late October or early November, and more coverage will be on this closer to its completion.

To pee or not to pee in Bee Gee Picture this: you’re out with friends having the time of your life, the summer air is the perfect temperature and you’re making the most of your first week back at college. But there’s one issue…you feel that Taco Bell from earlier weighing down on your full bladder.

It doesn’t seem like an issue, but then you walk into a gas station. No bathroom.

That’s understandable, most gas stations don’t have public restroom.

Then you try to go to Dairy Queen. The bathroom is closed. Pita Pit – it’s closed.

Subway – closed.

You try to plead with the cashier and try to buy something in exchange for sweet relief.

They aren’t hearing it.

This may be an oddly specific problem for me and my weak bladder. If there’s even one person who understands this plight, it’d be enough to write this article.

As a past fast-food worker, I completely get not wanting possibly drunk college kids in a freshly cleaned bathroom. But there must be a better way.

People who need that bathroom and won’t defile it with vomit shouldn’t be punished.

So, if you’re one of the people that made these bathrooms close, here is some drunk bathroom etiquette.

Beware solar eclipse scams

By Stepha Poulin Forum Editor Many people are making time to see the eclipse Monday, Aug. 21. However, eclipse glasses are necessary to even look at the eclipse, at the risk of damaging your eyesight.

The average person has a lot more to think about than picking up a pair of eclipse glasses, which has left them searching for some now. Sadly, a lot of stores are completely out of stock. It’s partly because of high demand to view the eclipse, since it will reach close to totality across the entire United States.

But there are more nefarious reasons for this shortage.

Some wise guys know it’s easy to profit off eclipse glasses. Although they provide a great deal of protection, they’re cheaply made and would sell for $10 at a gas station.

People started to buy eclipse glasses in bulk. Then, they used a website like Facebook or Craigslist to sell them for a marked-up price.

– An empty cereal box – A piece of aluminum foil – A small nail/pushpin – Tape – Scissors Steps: 1. On a piece of paper or cardboard, trace the bottom of the box, then cut out the rectangle on the paper with scissors and tape it to the bottom of the opened cereal box. That will be used as the screen of the personal theater.

2. Next, simply cut out two squares on the top/lid of the box that measure about 1.5 inches and tape the lid securely back together.

For a pure democracy, there must be free and equal access to information. Well, the United States isn’t pure for a reason; because not only is it unattainable, but it’s also not ideal.

Free information isn’t good information. It’s written by internet trolls making money from your clicks, and playing along just feeds the problem. Don’t be an accessory to propaganda.

There is no such thing as a free lunch While you’re all probably getting tons of free food this week, someone paid for it—likely the University. Guess what helps fund the University? Your tuition.

There’s also no such thing as free information. In a world filled with accusations of fake news (cough, cough Donald Trump), real news doesn’t come without cost.

For some reason, our generation seems to think information is free. Growing up, we were never deprived of the internet, and most of us had it at our fingertips almost 24/7 via cell phones from a very young age.

Unfortunately this access to information (that’s not usually good) has ruined us for good media sources.

With fake news and people wildly complaining about “the media”, my question is: What is this “the media” you’re all talking about?

Is it some clickbait from Facebook that links you to a story about a 12-year-old suing his parents for being born a red head?

You pay to attend school, companies hire employees with a variety of specializations and the people who know the most tend to make the most money. Why is news any different from these forms of information?

Buy news subscriptions that journalists are paid to write, copy editors are paid to edit, editors are paid to manage, designers are paid to design and sometimes web or delivery people are paid to bring it to your front door or website (all underpaid might I add). This is how these professionals feed themselves, so in return, to keep the market alive, you pay to consume their work.

If you want to read stories about a family unharmed after a tornado carries its camper 130 miles on a fabricated website, that’s fine, but don’t complain about biased news. If you want to get factual news, written by professionals and fact checked by copy editors, pick up a newspaper. And remember, MSNBC and FOX news aren’t fake news, they’re just biased news.

Nonetheless, they aren’t worth your time and energy.

Most people are confident they can spot fake news. Most people are wrong. The only way to be sure is to buy a subscription to a reputable news source.

You wouldn’t want to get your hair cut for free unless you wanted to end up with uneven ends and probably missing an eyebrow. Don’t expect information for free unless you want to end up missing the real news.

Tim Cain, a farmer from New Palestine, Indiana, has been competing in the tractor pull since 1994, but has attended since he was a child with his father. Although he never snatched a first place trophy, he has been in the winner circle multiple times with second and third place wins. Advisors help plan for your future 4

Academic advisors: they bring order to chaos for hundreds of students each semester. Need help with your class schedule? They’re on it. Need help figuring out that double major? They’re on that too.

Graduating in four years makes for a tight schedule and students—if wanting to graduate on time—must be aware of their major requirements. Many classes have prerequisites to meet before students can get into them.

To help guide students through the process, Assistant Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, Andy Alt and Academic Advisers Laura Barned and Claire Hoover gave some advice.

“I’m your partner in crime,” Barned said. When it comes to academic advising, “we do this all day every day,” she added.

And be warned: “Any advice I give is not just me wasting my breath,” Hoover said.

Look at the Degree Audit “[Students] should come with an understanding of their program requirements…including some familiarity with their Degree Audits,” Alt said. “The more prepared a student can be, the more worthwhile that appointment will be.”

Declare a major as soon as possible “My goal is to have them declare [a major] in the first year,” Hoover said.

The sooner students declare a major, the better the chances they have to graduate on time, she added.

Keep your GPA up “The things that break my heart are when students can’t complete their dream because of a GPA requirement,” Barned said. Some majors, like business, require certain GPA standards to be met. If students do not meet those standards by the time they declare a major, they will not be able to enter the program, she said.

Clubs help students find their places

By Jacob Clary Pulse Editor There are many ways new students, or returning students, can try and make new friends. Getting involved in different clubs and organizations on campus is one of those ways.

There are over 400 clubs and organizations at the University serving a wide array of interests. Some of these clubs are sport-related, like the dodgeball club, and others are completely different; like the Free Thinkers Society, which meets to share ideas and discuss various topics together.

Assistant Dean of Students Leah Howell has some ways students can get more involved.

“There are a couple of things that I would encourage, and first and foremost, from the moment that students step on campus there are events and activities the entire opening weekend,” Howell said. “In fact, I think we’re hosting programs pretty close to 24/7, so there are things to sort of meet all interests.”

Campus Fest is one of the focal points of

getting involved on campus, as many of the clubs and organizations available for students to join will be there for the event. The event takes place Thursday, Aug. 31, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Howell recommended looking at any clubs or organizations at Campus Fest that peak any interest.

“Sometimes people come in and they have a specific thing they’re looking for. I think it’s fine to look for those, but we have just over 400 recognized organizations right now on campus,” she said. “I think students would be surprised by the variety, so I encourage people to take time and peruse all the options.”

The University has a variety of clubs and organizations for students to choose from, but sometimes there isn’t a specific club available. When this happens, Howell said students are able to talk with the office of campus activities to create their own club.

“If there isn’t an organization that already exists that sort of ties to the mission that you sort of want to create, we work one-on-one with students to do that as long as there isn’t something they’re already doing,” she said.

Leah Howell Assistant Dean of Students The process of creating a club or organization can vary depending on how much the person wants that club or if it’s already been set up. It also depends on the amount of people interested.

“It really kind of depends on what the organization is, and at what point we begin to work with them,” Howell said. “The formal

process is an online registration, a constitution [and] an advisor membership. Informally, depending on how quickly they recruit people and so forth, I generally say that an organization can be up and exist in just a few weeks, but in order to be stable and sustainable, I usually look at about a year.”

Some students on campus gave their opinions about clubs and organizations as well.

“I think it’s important for, especially the freshmen, to meet new people and find new interests that they didn’t know they had,” Senior Ross Combs, an evironmental science major, said.

Taylor Houvig, a junior architecture major, agreed.

“It’s really important; especially because I feel like a lot of students come from far away, so it’s important to get a sense of family on campus and have those groups that you can always go to,” she said.

Being in clubs and organizations can be one of the most rewarding experiences in college. It allows students to find more people to be friends with, and get involved in activities they enjoy. All it takes is the right club.

Volleyball beats Fort Wayne in exhibition

By Zane Miller Sports Editor The Falcons volleyball team defeated the Fort Wayne Mastodons in an exhibition match Saturday afternoon three sets to two; winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17. Then, they lost the next two sets 25-20 and 26-24 before taking the final set and the match 15-8.

“This was a great opportunity for us to give everybody some real game-playing experience against another team before we officially start the season,” Falcons Head Coach Danijela Tomic said. “We have four freshmen and we have some returners from last year who didn’t play a lot, so this was great to give them some experience.”

The team felt the exhibition match was important for taking a more in-depth look at the team before the season officially starts.

“For us coaches, we took some positive things away, but we saw some weaknesses that we need to work on and continue working on,” Tomic said. “We definitely need more kills, we need to get at least two more players who will score for us and we definitely need to focus a little bit more on our blocking.”

The team also discovered some positive signs within the match that should build confidence going into the season.

“There definitely have been positives,” Tomic said. “Our service team did a great job, I thought they were very aggressive. Our defensive group did a very good job defending, so if our offense can get a little more contribution from one or two more players, they’re going to be OK.”

This was also the first season for Division I volleyball to feature an exhibition match on the schedule, and the team felt they took full advantage.

“It really was a huge benefit for us,” Tomic said. “To have a real atmosphere of all the matches, to have a crowd and officials and

The team also used the exhibition match opportunity to find different combinations of players to be used at different points throughout the season.

“Our goal was to have everybody play,” Tomic said. “Everybody wanted to get a chance because we’re still figuring out their roles and what they can do, kind of finding the optimal lineup, and we want to put the six or seven best players that will make the best team.”

Although the team lost two of the sets, they felt it was important information going forward.

“We started the first set in one lineup, then changed the second set,” Tomic said.

“In the third, we wanted to use different lineups to try different things and get some data out of it.”

The team will next play on Friday and Saturday at home, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday. The first is an afternoon game against the Illinois-Chicago Flames followed by a night game against the Duquesne Dukes. Then Saturday is another afternoon match against the Xavier Musketeers.

Valparaiso falls in soccer scrimmage

By Jamison Terbrack Sports Reporter The Falcons soccer team defeated the Valparaiso Crusaders 2-0. It was their last warm-up game before the season opener on Saturday, Aug. 26.

The game was played with three 30minute periods, as the coaches made an agreement before the game.

The Falcons controlled the ball early as sophomore forward Chris Brennan got a header on net only three minutes in. 12 minutes later, junior forward Tate Robertson stole and dished the ball again to Brennan, who fired a shot on cage, only to be stopped by the Valparaiso goalkeeper.

Just minutes later it was Brennan’s turn to set someone up as his pass lead to the opening goal, scored by defenseman Moe Mustafa before time ended in the first.

The Falcons wouldn’t let the waved goal keep them down for long. It was Robertson’s time to score this time after he scooped a free ball and fired it home after a cross from Brennan.

“Those two [Robertson and Brennan] are two of our top players for sure,” Nichols said. “It’s hard to signal anyone out because we have so many guys, but those are two to keep an eye on. They should be part of a lot of goals.”

This would end a rather quiet 2nd period with the score sitting at 2-0.

At the 72 and 73 minute marks, Reynolds and Souahy respectively sent headers that couldn’t find the net leaving the score still at 2-0.

This would be it for the scoring as after the 3rd period horn sounded the Falcons headed home with a 2-0 victory, closing out the exhibition slate.

Although the team came away with the

dub in this one, they still need to work on their intensity and energy for the games that count in the scorebooks. Nichols doesn’t want his goalkeeper [Anthony Mwembia] to have to come up with big saves at the end of games-he had to in this one.

This is because the team is so different than last year’s according to Nichols. They graduated a good amount of points from last year.

That opens up opportunities for younger players. The team is very balanced throughout all four years, and spots in the starting lineup are still up for grabs.

This competition doesn’t lead to any animosity though, as the boys all still pull and root for each other.

The team is anxious, Nichols said, as the regular season starts on Saturday, Aug. 26, with a tilt against the Indianapolis Jaguars at Cochrane Stadium.

With the city council’s past term, what did you notice that didn’t go well that if you become a member you could improve upon?

A.

I think there’s a big need to keep young people here and to keep graduates here. What I see in my own adult children and their friends who live in other cities, I see them really pushing towards taking care of the environment.

When I see my kids going out of the way to recycle and compost, I think if we had a real push for that where Bowling Green was known to be green that we might be able to maintain and retain some of our young people before they decide to move on. Then we might be able to drive some other businesses in. A lot of businesses are looking for ways to find their niche and being green might be the way to do that.

What are your campaign plans for this fall? What should BGSU students expect to see?

Q. A.

Instead of trying to cut the budget by short-term solutions, we need to be thinking of the budget in long-term solutions, and moving towards recycling everything instead of cutting recycling and then having a cost increase from landfill costs.

We have wind turbines in our municipality and we have solar panels in our municipality; that’s wonderful.

We could use more stuff like that because there is no way our energy bills should be going up like they are now. We have alternative energy in place, but it was “more lucrative” to sell the energy to somebody else. Well why don’t you reduce our bills? The thinking on the current council doesn’t seem to be thinking of the citizens.

It seems like they don’t really pay attention, and it seems like they don’t ask questions and do the things they could be doing with the power that they have that could help everybody.

I hope Bowling Green State University Students will become involved in our city. There are many things here for them to enjoy. We have a wonderful parks and rec system, a wonderful little down town, great restaurants. I want them to be a part of our city and feel some ownership and that is very important to me.

As far as the students go, my message to them will be, we want this city to be home for you. A place where you feel you want to return here proud and that you’ll always have the best of memories about Bowling Green.

We will have yards signs out, we will be going door-to-door to meet with residents and I will be making myself available to speak with any group or organization that’s available. I do want to meet as many people from Bowling Green that I possibly can.

By Stepha Poulin | Forum Editor With construction comes change, and several offices are moving as renovations continue on campus, including the Ethnic Student Center, the LGBTQ Resource Center and the Office of Multicultural Affairs. The Women’s Center, International Programs and Partnerships, TRIO Program and the Center for Community and Civic Engagement will also move.

These offices will relocate to more centralized locations on campus, and students will now have these resources in close proximity.

Although these offices will have new locations, there are few changes to be expected.

Some students frequenting these locations are happy for the relocation, but there has been some potential drawbacks.

Sophomore Osi Okoro, a digital arts major, prefers the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) Resource Center’s new space in the Union. The resource center provides programming, education and support to the University community.

“At the old office, there was a lot more going on. You had to weave through cubicles to find who you wanted to speak to,” Okoro said.

“But I worry about how busy it will get in the Union with all of these offices in one place.”

Okoro went on to mention the new Steak ‘n Shake is already extremely popular. With several new offices coming the Union, foot traffic could very well increase.

The Women’s Center is still anticipating a move to Hayes Hall. They will continue to provide a gathering place, resource center and opportunities in the tentative location in 108 Hanna Hall.

Solar eclipse comes to BG

WHO: The Department of Physics and Astronomy WHAT: Safely viewing the solar eclipse WHEN: Monday, August 21 from 1 to 3:30 pm WHERE: The physical sciences building, the BGSU observatory Seeing a solar eclipse is rare. Professor John Laird, chair of the department of physics and astronomy, said the last time a solar eclipse was visible from Bowling Green was in the 90s. Now students and community members have an opportunity to experience a solar eclipse with assistance from University faculty.

Laird said there will be telescopes fitted with solar filters on the roof of the physical sciences building for viewers to use, as well as a live stream broadcast in the planetarium. The department will also have eclipse glasses available, which protect the eyes when observing the sun.

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is when a full moon moves between the sun and earth. Its shadow is cast on the earth and blocks out all or part of the sun. BG is not experiencing a total solar eclipse on the 21st, so the moon will only block part of the sun.

When is the next time we will experience a solar eclipse?

BG will experience its next solar eclipse in 2024.

BG is in the path of totality during the 2024 eclipse, so the moon will block all sunlight from BG for a brief period of time.

What path does this eclipse follow?

During this eclipse, the path of totality, where the moon completely blocks the sun, crosses the U.S. diagonally from Oregon to South Carolina in a strip about 70 miles wide.

Warning: Please do not attempt to look at the eclipse without proper eye protection. To view safely, you can use glasses from the department of physics and astronomy or purchase your own pair. To learn how to build your own pinhole camera for viewing refer to the forum section.
