Chris Jans to be announced as Men’s basketball coach The BG men’s basketball team will announce the filling of its head coaching vacancy later this week. The athletic department confirmed that Wichita State University assistant coach Chris Jans will fill the position previously held by Louis Orr and that a press conference for the official announcement will be hosted this week. Jans’ Shockers fell earlier Sunday afternoon to The University of Kentucky ending their perfect season and road to the Final Four. He was the assistant and right hand man to head coach Gregg Marshall and was an important piece to the puzzle that took the Shockers to the Final Four last season before they lost to Louisville. Jans got his first head coaching job in 1996 at Kirkwood Community College. In his second season he took a struggling team and won the NJCAA national championship and also won NJCAA national coach of the year honors. Jans will bring experience from Wichita State that will be instrumental in the building of the basketball program. He was Marshall’s assistant since he arrived in 2007 and was an important figure in building that mid-major program to the level it is now. He leaves a team that finished the season 35-1.

The president of the student body gets paid about $10,000 a year to represent the student voice. He gets paid from student general fees, which then go through the University to the student government budget. President of the Stipends for this year: Undergraduate $10,606: President Alex Solis Student Government $3,500: Vice President David Alex Solis gets paid the Neely equivalent of full in$3,500: Speaker Katie Post state tuition, $10,606 $750: Chief of Staff- Danielle Parker [She is paid less because she and Vice President stepped in for someone else halfway David Neely gets paid through the year, would have been $3,500 for the full year. $1,500] To compare, Bowling Total: $19,106 Green city council members make $5,000 a year, according to earlier BG News report. This amount could create a conflict of interest if they have to oppose the University for the students. USG Adviser and Dean of Students Jodi Webb insists the USG members don’t have that conflict. “[USG is] a key part of our campus,” Webb said. “So while they do receive that stipend, they are respected as the student voice, not a University employee.” The way Solis and Neely get paid is through the USG budget.

On Saturday, an estimated 3,700 people packed the Union to celebrate one thing: their love of anime at Animarathon XII. Thousands of colorful and eccentric costumes were just a small part of the convention, which was organized by University organization Anime in Northwest Ohio and welcomed anime fans of all ages. Senior Rachel Gast, marketing director of ANO, said the convention went smoothly and the club had a positive reaction from both attendees and presenters. “I think it was the best [convention] I’ve been a part of,” Gast said. “This is my fourth and final year.” More than 50 vendors and artists came to sell their work, including senior Chloe Rose, who sold her art in the convention’s Artist Alley. “I have a combination of digital and traditional prints that are fan art from preexisting series,” Rose said. Other vendors included student creations, anime themed items and even chainmail made by the local Dragon Brothers

Updated classrooms:

While increasing technology may be good for learning and sustainability purposes, it’s not for the University’s budget. It cost the University an estimated $2.5 million to update 15 classrooms in four buildings during the past three years with technological advancements, said John Ellinger, chief information officer of Information Technology Services. Before that, most of the larger lecture halls hadn’t been renovated in more than 20 years. Four buildings during the past three years have been updated with smart boards, TVs, projec-

This technolog y advancement has sparked some concern among the University’s administration. This advancement has challenged the administration to come up with other ways to lower the budget while remaining sustainable. To offset the costs, techniques include keeping rooms at standard temperatures, turning lights off when unoccupied, instating a “bring your own laptop” program and considering geothermal and solar energy in the near future, Vice President of Capital Planning
