GAME PLAN

By ANTHONY RADFORD

THERE are fears any delay in funding the $16.5 million Bendigo Stadium expansion could harm the city’s future economic growth. The stadium has been mentioned in Greater Bendigo council’s draft Economic Development Strategy, unveiled this week, as a key plank in driving major events to the

Stadium expansion key to city’s growth

city. The masterplan for the project is believed to be close to being released. The first stage of the plan is to build three new courts that can be transformed into a 3000-seat showcourt. Stage two is increasing the

showcourt to 4000 seats. With a state election around the corner, lobbying of candidates and parties has begun in earnest. Meanwhile, Ballarat has unveiled concept designs for a new $21 million basketball centre at Wendouree.

Those plans are aimed at positioning Ballarat to “remain competitive with other regional centres”, ensuring a pitched battle with Bendigo for funding. At the heart of the Bendigo campaign is that the stadium expansion is vital to the city’s economic future.

A REMPLAN report shows it is worth $17.5 million to the economy each year. Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said the project was vital to continuing Bendigo’s impressive economic growth over the past decade.
