ABOUT BGMC
The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community–based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 200+ voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds III, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive, affirming image of the gay and lesbian community. The Chorus is heard live by thousands of people each season and millions more through recording, television and internet broadcasts. CBS–WBZ named the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. The Boston Business Journal has named BGMC as one of the top 10 performing arts organizations 2018–2021. BGMC is a Cultural Ambassador — being the first LGBTQ+ chorus to perform in Poland in 2005, the Middle East in 2015 and in South Africa in June 2018.
Singers and musicians on stage today are fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID 19. BGMC members have each tested negative today before arriving at the hall. Boston Symphony Hall has upgraded air systems, using high quality HEPA filters. These COVID protocols allows BGMC to perform without masks. BGMC member Kelvin Powell serves as community educator for prevention, education and screening at Fenway 16 and has facilitated providing BGMC with hundreds of test kits this performance cycle. Thank you Kelvin & Fenway!

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! The first time we sang that word in rehearsal I almost had to pinch myself! Even though I knew that we had spent several years creating this music already, it was very moving to sing those words. Not only did we have all this glorious Disney music to perform but, after several years apart, we were back together singing! At that first rehearsal we had bling bags for everyone. You got a score to the show, a Disney PRIDE in Concert tee shirt, hand sanitizer, a mask specially designed for singing and a box of Kleenex. We were very late starting the rehearsal—we had to greet each other first! That took a lot of Kleenex!
That was at the beginning of February, and we have been hard at work ever since. After not singing for two years that first month was rough! March rolled around and we were able to remove the masks. The smiles at rehearsal were electrifying! It was wonderful to be back with our chorus family. And it is wonderful to be here with you today returning to live performing! You are going to hear some incredible stories from folks today and you are going to hear some fantastic music! And all those Disney videos! Pay close attention to the words today. As Chad Weirick put it to the chorus at retreat—sometimes we are so carried away by the tunes we know and love we don’t notice how wonderful the words are!
Thank you for joining us here today.
Reuben M. Reynolds, III, has been the Music Director of the BGMC since December 1997. After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. In Kansas City, he served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. Mr. Reynolds has commissioned more than 20 major pieces and hundreds of arrangements in his career. The Boston Globe describes his conducting as “expert and idiomatic.”

Disney is 99 years old and this is the first ever all–Disney choral concert. The Disney canon needed to be told from an LGBTQ+ perspective in a way only BGMC could. Welcome to the world premiere!
We started the journey with Disney in April 2019 and couldn’t imagine then what we would all experience over the next few years. So many crises. Unfathomable losses. The long overdue resurgence of racial justice. War. The Supreme Court’s decision that puts fundamental privacy rights at risk and institutionalizes gender–based discrimination.
We didn’t know then that a Disney show would not just be fresh, innovative and fun … but would actually be the perfect way to come back to a changed world from our 30–month COVID induced hiatus.
We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our work possible. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. Your giving has been vital during the time when we couldn’t have any earned income.
We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, Eastern Bank and Boston IVF.
I hope you enjoy today’s sprinkling of magic and pixie dust! It’s our way to make the world a little brighter, and yes, a little gayer.
Craig Coogan joined the BGMC as Executive Director in October 2012. He is an expert in developing strategies and programs to help LGBTQ+ and other nonprofit organizations achieve their operational and artistic goals. A graduate of Syracuse University, he brings experience in both the for–profit and non–profit arenas. Mr. Coogan previously served as Executive Director for One Voice Mixed Chorus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a founding board member and treasurer for ten years of the acclaimed women’s choral group Vox Femina Los Angeles. He has also produced independent films, award–winning documentaries, and acclaimed original plays that tell the LGBTQ+ experience.

Reactionary lawmakers around the country are taking discriminatory action against the LGBTQ+ community. These moves range from the “Don’t Say Gay” law in Florida that will prevent kindergartners with same gender parents from talking about their families to a new law in Tennessee that will require middle and high school students to provide proof of their sex at birth in order to participate in school athletics.
Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) doesn’t just say “gay,” we sing gay, and we are bringing stories of the LGBTQ+ experience and the power of music into schools through empower (education + music = power).
The program consists of:
• Introduction led by BGMC’s (CORI certified) educator & facilitator who creates a safe space, set expectations for the program and establish ground rules and agreement for discussion. The program is previewed to set expectations.
• Video produced by BGMC’s award–winning documentary team. It tells three diverse member stories, each scored with a BGMC song and connected by context from Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds, III.
• Post video discussion led by BGMC’s (CORI certified) educator & facilitator. Discussion includes impact of music, LGBTQ+ issues, how to be an ally, how to be who you are. Resources provided. In most presentations selected members of BGMC will participate.
empower is appropriate for grades 5 and up and is targeted for grades 7–12. It is offered in person or virtual.
The program is available in multiple configurations to fit various school schedules. Please reach out to the BGMC Office (office@bgmc.org) for more information.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBTQ+ community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas.
As a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBTQ+ group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S.
The BGMC was an active participant in the same–sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator.
Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBTQ+ student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and to support dozens of Boston area non–profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBTQ+ community.
Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay–Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $750,000 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations.

We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. A marks those who died of AIDS. It matters not how long these men sang with us. Whether they sang for a single performance or dozens, they are forever part of our chorus family. They are always in our hearts and memories.
