Message From Our Executive Director was identified by staff to be part of a special team assigned to pilot a new Club in the southwest called the Stockdale Boys & Girls Club.

The rational was that we needed an energetic, smart athletic, responsible and fun role model that our kids would respond to. Adolf met all of the requirements.

Furthermore, his own experience as a Club member was a tremendous asset in developing the program and meeting the needs of a whole new Club membership and ensuring our success in this new venture. Today, Adolf has graduated college and roamed the country working in the hospitality field and managing hotels.

After almost 23 years of working with the Boys & Girls Club, I’m starting to see the impact of our programs come full circle. The kids we served 20 years ago are now grown up and many are bringing their own children to the Club. Some of the kids that we hold so fondly in our memories, we run into in public; some work for us as managers; and others provide services such as delivering our Federal Express packages.

As far away as some of our kids may go, they stay with us in our hearts and our memories. One such young man instantly comes to mind. I met Adolf Mondaca my first year at the Club in 1996. He and his two brothers were being raised by their maternal grandmother in a small apartment down the street from the Club and the boys came every day from the time our doors opened until the street lights came on. Adolf was a natural leader and enthusiastically participated in all of our programs, field trips, community service projects and counselor in training classes.

I was not surprised that after so many years of being a Club Kid, Adolf was brought on as a Program Aide to mentor and engage the children in our care. More importantly, he

He has stayed in touch with Club staff and continues to make us proud! I share this with you because after all these years, Adolf has once again eagerly accepted a challenge from his Club. One of our members, who was also one of the first children to enroll at the Stockdale Club and be mentored by Adolf, is about to graduate from California State University Monterey with a degree in hospitality. The Club was able to facilitate a reunion between Adolf and the young man and re-establish the relationship that meant so much to them almost 20 years ago.

This story, like so many other stories at the Club, illustrates the relationships that are forged between staff and children that are life changing, long lasting and bring us full circle as human beings

Club Members Explore Aera Energy Academy The Boys & Girls Club – Armstrong Youth Center’s STEM Mentoring Program, funded by the Sea Research Foundation, participated in some hands on activities as part of the Energy Engineers Module at the Aera Energy Academy on Thursday, November 1, 2018.

The Boys & Girls Club is so thankful for the STEM mentors who have committed at least one hour per week this year to mentor our Club members, especially Tell Payne and Jlynn Moore Bowen with Aera Energy LLC, and DJ Whipple! Our Club members are excited about STEM, thanks to them.

The Club members learned about petroleum exploration and drilling, oilfield safety and the importance of protecting animals and their habitats. Teams of Club members rotated through three STEM lessons conducted by Aera’s Ambassadors, including a popular demonstration on how to drill and explore for oil using a cupcake. (Hint: When drilling for oil in a cupcake with a straw pick the one that has chocolate chips.)

Thanks to the many Aera employees who make up the Ambassador Program – you guys were AWESOME! The overall goal of STEM Mentoring is to positively impact the social development and academic achievement of atrisk and high-risk youth ages 6–10.

STEM Mentoring encourages them to reduce high-risk behaviors, improve academic success indicators, and increase their knowledge of and interest in STEM topics and careers. The group mentoring program connects small groups of youth with caring mentors to engage in weekly, structured, hands-on, multimedia STEM activities.

House Demolished So Kids Can Be Kids

Thanks to the generous support from the Kevin Harvick Foundation and the Wheeler Foundation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County recently purchased and demolished the tri-plex across the alley from the Armstrong Youth Center. The reason behind the purchase was to eliminate the illegal and suspicious activities that frequently take place in the alley so close to the children and youth attending the Club.

“The Club members on several occasions have not been allowed to play in the Club’s backyard due to the various illegal activities occurring in the alley when all they want to do is run around and be a kid,” stated Barry Hill, Associate Executive Director, Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County.

Heather Frank, Director of Development for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County, took the first bite of the house and Blake Arnold Construction Inc. completed demolition. In a few hours, the atmosphere around the Club and the alley changed and the ability to see across the property gives a sense of excitement for what is to come.

The demolition moves the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County one-step closer to having a safe and enclosed campus for the children and youth served by the Armstrong Youth Center in East Bakersfield. The ultimate goal is to close off the alley to regular traffic, fence the property and return programming space at the Armstrong Youth Center to the children who need us most.

With the added space, the Boys & Girls Club hopes to build a Club Education and Support Center to support the Clubs’ teen Workforce Development Program.
