The most common response is: “I come to the Club because my parents are working ” This is true for the majority, if not all, of our Members most of our Members’ parents choose BGCLAH because they trust the Club to keep their children safe after the final school bell Although many may misunderstand and misinterpret the Club as a baby sitting service, we are anything but! With this first ever Grantor Biannual Newsletter, we commit to showing you your dollars at work, and how BGCLAH is pivotal to the character development, academic growth, and confidence for young individuals in the L A Harbor! Hi there! I’m Vicki, and I’d like to formally introduce myself as the Grants Coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor (BGCLAH). Over the course of two and a half years, we may have crossed paths via email or in person as my role at BGCLAH has evolved many times. I joined the Club as the Special Projects Coordinator and Executive Assistant to CEO Mike Lansing in August 2020 during pique pandemic frenzy. Within a year, I assumed ownership over many grant proposals and reports as the Grants Associate. Today, as the Grants Coordinator, it will be my mission for the remainder of this year to rebuild and revitalize the Grants Department at BGCLAH. That starts with strengthening our relationship with you, our valued partner. by Vicki Colbert THIS Thank You to Funders Programs & Activities Update College Bound & Career Bound A Message from the CEO, Mike Lansing A MESSAGE FROM THE GRANTS DEPARTMENT

JUAN SIMENTAL Juan has been a BGCLAH member for over two years He is our first member to ever publish a book and already working on his second novel! His book, Forever Summer, is about friendships, relationships, and the every day struggles that teens face. We interviewed Juan about his first publication and his time at BGCLAH. Here's what he had to say. What programs are you involved with at Harbor City BGC? I am a College Bound student, and I also participate in Fine Arts, Music, and Keystone Club What inspired you to write this book? I began writing and creating short comics in the fifth grade As I continued writing, more ideas came rushing to my mind My imagination allowed me to draft numerous stories about summer and friendships Why is Harbor City BGC your after-school home? I really enjoy Fine Arts and Keystone; those are my favorite programs I decided to take a chance on the Club when Staff reached out during the pandemic I started with Fine Arts but as time passed, I wanted to try new programs This became my second home because of the Staff And Ms Genevieve is a huge inspiration to me; she is my biggest motivator! She always listens when I want to bounce ideas around with her All of the Staff welcome who I am and want me to flourish and they all have a copy of my book, Forever Summer!
