About the Club OF WEST CENTRAL MISSOURI

The Club is Having a Life-Changing Impact on the Communities it Serves Every weekday, the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri serves more than 700 kids throughout its 11 sites. We are training our community’s future leaders to make positive life choices in Cole Camp, Green Ridge, La Monte, Leeton, Sedalia and Smithton.

Our Mission To inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as caring and productive citizens.

You Make this Mission Possible The cost of one year of programming for one child is $2,040. That’s one year in a safe, positive environment after school and during the summer. If 10 people attending this evening’s event can each give $204, or 20 people give $102 each, that would ensure one child can benefit from a year of the Boys & Girls Club program. Big or small, it all makes a difference in the life of a child.

S.A.Y. “YES! I want to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri.” Start by bidding from the heart! You will have the opportunity to raise your paddle to support our community’s children so no child is turned away. Donations are also accepted any time online at www.bgckids.com or by contacting the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri at 660-826-8331.

Aligning all efforts toward common outcomes Growing together to reach our full potential Operating with high standards of honesty and accountability Fostering an environment of transparency and common voice Transforming the future and providing stability Building relationships through community resources Ensuring that great futures start HERE

2 Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri • An Evening of Heart & Hope • Presented by W-K Chevrolet

Welcome! Dear Friends of the Boys & Girls Clubs: Thank you for joining us tonight for the 24th annual “Evening of Heart & Hope!” We are grateful that you’ve come out to support us and we hope that your evening will be filled with fun as you bid from the heart to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri. This year is already a year of change for the Club – former executive director Brett Barth-Fagan has departed for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America after eight dedicated years of service to our organization. We’ve introduced some new faces, like Stoney Hays, our new Director of Operations, and we’ve come to depend even more on some familiar ones, like Melissa Boeschen, who will now be serving the Club as our Director of Development. Even with all this new growth and opportunity, many things remain the same at the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri. Our community supporters and donors are still making a huge difference in the lives of kids. Last year you helped us raise over $163,000 at “An Evening of Heart & Hope!” This year, over 250 supporters have made tonight’s event possible. We have 50 live auction items up for bid, giving you ample opportunity to go home with a perfect piece of art, tickets to the big game, a gift basket for your Valentine, or dinner for you and your closest friends. And again this year, a title sponsor has generously donated their time, talent and treasure to make our auction a success: The 24th annual “Evening of Heart and Hope” is presented by W-K Chevrolet. As always, every dollar you spend at the auction helps change the lives of our kids for the better. No matter what changes at the Club, our purpose is unchanging: inspiring and enabling all young people to realize their full potential as caring and productive citizens. So, on behalf of all of us, THANK YOU again for coming out to support our kids. We hope you’ll stay for the fun, and with each item auctioned off, you will bid from the heart! Sincerely,

R.J. Lindstrom Board President Dear Friends: For nearly a century, W-K Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac has focused on service. Through our quality vehicles, devoted customer care, and community engagement, you can be certain that we strive to live out our belief that our customers are our number one priority. At first glance, it may not seem that a car dealership could have much in common with an afterschool organization like the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri. We don’t offer the same products, we don’t encounter the same challenges, and we certainly don’t see many 9-year-olds driving off the lot in their new Silverado! If you look deeper, however, you’ll find that the thread that binds us is our commitment to service. Whether it’s through a safe, reliable, high-quality car or safe, reliable, high-quality afterschool care, both W-K and the Club are dedicated to giving your family the tools they need for their journey. It’s that dedication that has led us to become the 2014 title sponsor of “An Evening of Heart and Hope.” We thank you for joining us in our support of the Club tonight, and we hope you have fun, bid from the heart, and have a great evening! Sincerely,

Ken Weymuth Ken Weymuth Ownewr, W-K Chevrolet

Pink Flamingo Award Nominees We are very excited to welcome this year’s Pink Flamingo nominees! As you can tell, we have a very difficult decision for you to make tonight! Remember, $1=1 vote and you can vote as many times as you’d like until 7:20 p.m.

Sue Heckart

Sarah Nail

Bob Satnan

Friends will tell you that Sue Heckart’s mind is always turning and dreaming up the next project to meet the needs of her community. Sue embodies what it means to give back. Her philanthropic spirit has not only helped community efforts, but also encouraged others to be benevolent. She was once quoted as saying, “If we can help a young person through their education and fulfill their dream, that makes me feel good.”

One could make the argument that Sarah Nail is the leading health advocate in Sedalia, Pettis County, and maybe even the state of Missouri. From creating Healthy U to implementing many programs during her time at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sarah’s primary focus has been the health of her community. Why is she so successful? Because she has walked the walk, making the committment to change her own lifestyle and lose a significant amount of weight and setting the example for hundreds of others. Sarah’s devotion and love of the Sedalia community, and its continued good health, is seemingly neverending.

If there is a face of the Sedalia community, you could make a very convincing argument that face is Bob Satnan. First as editor of the Sedalia Democrat, and now as the Communications Director of the Sedalia 200 School District, Bob seems to be everywhere. Through volunteering, his coverage of community events, and his advocacy of healthy lifestyles, he has touched the lives of thousands of people in the community. His love for the community is evident in the list of organizations he works with, from the Boys & Girls Club to coaching youth football. Bob is constantly giving back to the community with his time, actions, and attention.

Sue does not take credit for her generosity, saying donations are her family’s way of giving back to the community that welcomed them in and have supported their family business for more than six decades.

CAST YOUR VOTE!

Thanks to all of our Pink Flamingo Award nominees for their contributions to our community. Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri • An Evening of Heart & Hope • Presented by W-K Chevrolet 5

Good journalists recognize great journalism.

Our news team was honored again last year with 40 awards of excellence given out by four different journalism-focused associations. Of those, 18 were first place honors. In addition, the Democrat was selected by the Associated Press Media Editor's for their 2013 Community Journalism Public Service Initiative for our "Meth at the Crossroads" series. And, Democrat Reporter Emily Jarrett was honored as the Missouri Press Association's Missouri Outstanding Young Journalist of the Year. We remain focused on the issues important to you so join our daily discussions with a print or electronic subscription.
