Our Vision

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County will provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.

FROM THE CO-CHAIRMEN

In 2013, our thirteenth year of operation, a record number of kids attended our three facilities located in Vero Beach, Sebastian and Fellsmere. While at the Clubs, children spend their time on meaningful things.

They finish their homework, spend time with positive adult role models, learn about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and participate in our nationally recognized programs. We work hard to merit the support of you, our donors, who care deeply about giving these children a chance to succeed.

As part of our strategic planning process, we have structured the Board with two Co-Chairmen and focused committees to better tackle the strong growth we are experiencing. Our hardworking Board members are each assigned functional areas of responsibility matching their skills and experiences. They are a special group of committed men and women who are essential to our future performance.

One of our key fundraising goals this year is to increase membership in our President’s Circle, those generous donors who give a cumulative $1,000 or more annually to the Clubs.

We are also reaching out in new ways to our business community, enlisting their support as Booster Club members and Business Partners. We are working hard to extend the awareness and importance of the work we do.

We have a major project ahead of us. At the Vero Beach Club, we are developing plans to convert an adjacent, surplus County property into a much needed, enclosed recreational facility and outside play area. You will be hearing more about this in the immediate future.

Finally, we owe enormous gratitude to Jay McNamara, the past chairman, for conceptualizing, nurturing and providing vision and hard work to our Clubs for more than a decade. Through Jay’s passion and leadership, the Boys & Girls Clubs grew from a small, one-room classroom in a local elementary school to the vital organization that it is today.

Jay is a true champion of wanting kids to achieve their dreams. That is what it’s all about.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Your investment pays great dividends! As the pages of this annual report reflect, we had our most successful year to date. Thanks to the leadership of our Board, the generosity of our donors and supporters, and the care and commitment of our staff, we continue to be at the forefront of positive youth development in Indian River County. Our kids continue to succeed in school; they are learning about the dangers of drugs and alcohol; the benefits of diet and exercise; and most importantly, they are learning how to respect themselves and others.

Although any child between the ages of 6 and 18 can attend the Clubs, many of our members come from challenging or disadvantaged circumstances.

Currently, 47% of our kids come from single parent homes; 41% of our families have annual incomes less than $20,000; 81% of our kids are eligible for free or reduced lunches at school; and 40% receive a full or partial scholarship to attend the Club.

During the time after school, kids are most at risk for negative influence and behavior. For children from disadvantaged circumstances, those risks are even higher and daily obstacles present challenges to achieve a successful future. Time at the Clubs is structured, whether doing homework or participating in one of our nationally recognized programs.

In 2000, we opened our doors in Indian River County and began serving youth at the former Thompson Elementary School. Today, we have expanded our reach to serve some 1,500 youth through our three clubhouses, one each in Vero Beach, Sebastian and Fellsmere. The Sebastian Club opened in 2006, followed by the Vero Beach and Fellsmere Clubs in the fall of 2010, with a total of 28,000 square feet of space. The Clubs include education centers with computers, art rooms, game rooms, teen centers and multipurpose areas. The Clubs also have outdoor space for games, sports, and other activities. All three Clubs are debt free, and are located on land provided by local governments with long term dollar-per-year leases.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County provides a vital service to our community’s youth. When the last school bell rings at 3:00 p.m., nearly 19,000 area children leave their classrooms. Some go home to a parent, some go to an extracurricular program, and some go to work. But for literally thousands of children in our community, the after school hours are spent alone. Lacking adult supervision or access to an after-school program, these children are in danger of being the victim of a crime, or in many cases, committing one.

The rate of juvenile-related crime more than doubles between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and it is during those hours that children are more likely to be involved in substance abuse and sexual activities.

Indian River County Schools are facing cuts that will directly impact students by eliminating dropout prevention programs, field trips, extracurricular activities, reading programs and gifted programs. Our Clubs already have extensive waiting lists, and the demand for our services continue to exceed our ability to provide for the children in our area.

County Snapshot Indian River County has a current population of 140,567, of which more than 19,000 are between the ages of 5 and 17. Of that number, approximately 3,300 individuals are living at or below the poverty level. Thirteen percent of our adult population has less than a high school diploma.

Long term student enrollment projections show an expected increase of 7,000 children countywide, approximately nineteen percent of our population, over the next 15 years.

Additional schools are slated to be built and expansions are underway for existing ones.

Many of these children will need a place to go after school and during the ten weeks of summer.

The need for our services has never been greater.

Involvement in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County encourages youth to stay in school and further their education, with an impressive ninety-nine percent of our members being promoted to the next grade level this past year.

CORE PROGRAMS

Boys & Girls Clubs nurture young people’s self-esteem by instilling in them a sense of belonging, usefulness, influence and competence. Clubs do this daily by providing young people with one-on-one relationships with caring adult professionals and fun, age-appropriate, well-rounded programming.

Each of our Clubs follows the Boys & Girls Club of America’s Formula for Impact to ensure that our youth achieve priority outcomes for success. As a result, we work daily to ensure that every young person who enters our doors is

1.) on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, 2.) demonstrates good character and citizenship, and 3.) is living a healthy lifestyle.

Measurable outcomes are based on providing our young people with positive self-identity; educational employment; social, emotional and cultural competencies; community and civic involvement; health and well-being; and a strong moral compass.

To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County focus on six core program areas: Education & Career Development These programs help youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, set goals, explore career choices, prepare for employment, and embrace technology to achieve success in their careers and in life. Club programs include Be Great: Graduate, Project Learn, Power Hour, Money Matters, and Career Launch.

Character & Leadership Development Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs.

They empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image and good character, and respect their own and others’ cultural identities. Club programs include the Torch and Keystone Clubs, and the National Youth of the Year recognition program.

Community Service Creating and increasing teen volunteer opportunities enriches the lives of our youth and makes our community a better place to call home. We are constantly seeking new opportunities of service for our members to become engaged in.

Health & Life Skills These initiatives develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, help them to set personal goals, and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Club programs include Healthy Habits: Triple Play, SMART Moves, SMART Girls, Passport to Manhood, and NetSmartz.

Sports, Fitness & Recreation These Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, skills for reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment, and social and interpersonal skills. Club programs include Triple Play: A Game Plan for Mind, Body, and Soul.

The Arts Programs in this core area enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, performing arts, crafts, and creative writing. The year-round National Fine Arts, Digital Arts, and Image Makers programs encourage artistic expression through drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, film-making, collage, mixed media and sculpture displayed at local and regional exhibits.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Society of Angels | Lessons in Etiquette and Good Manners The Society of Angels is a volunteer organization comprised of more than fifty women who work directly with our Club members on special lessons and activities. The most notable projects coordinated by the Angels this year were book clubs at our Vero Beach and Fellsmere Clubs, as well as an etiquette class for the children. Angels met weekly with their book club members, reading along together and enjoying snacks and refreshments. The etiquette members worked closely with the Angels to learn about overall good manners, table etiquette, appropriate posture and body language, conversational and phone skills, and much more. The lesson series was concluded with a luncheon for the children, where they had the opportunity to show off their wonderful manners and reflect on what they learned. 2013 Youth of the Year

Cristian Zamora was named Youth of the Year during the ninth annual Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year celebration. Being named a Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Club member can receive. Club members are judged on their service to home and family; moral character; community service; school leadership and service; academic performance; service to the Boys & Girls Clubs; life goals; two written essays; and public speaking ability.

Zamora was a member of the Fellsmere Boys & Girls Club and a senior at Sebastian River High School. He was on the cross country team, the track team and the lacrosse team and served on the yearbook committee, the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, the Future Business Leaders of America, and the school spirit club. He also volunteers his time at Treasure Coast Community Health and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

To recognize Cristian for his hard work, he was presented with a fully paid tuition scholarship to Indian River State College, as well as a voucher to cover the cost of his school textbooks.

“My biggest goal is to go to college and succeed in life, and I am dedicated to making that happen,” said Cristian. “I will be the first one in my family to attend college and I plan to pursue a career in medicine.” He is currently a freshman at Indian River State College.

SUMMER PROGRAM Our ten-week summer program was attended by 648 children this year. It was held Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Our core Boys & Girls Clubs programs were taught each day and the children enjoyed fun daily activities, special guest speakers, and exciting field trips to area attractions. We maintain a waiting list for attendance each summer, as we have more applications than space permits.
