Journey to the Stars

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley plays a pivotal role in the lives of thousands of youth, offering a sanctuary and a second home for those navigating challenges at school or home. In the face of adversities like loss, violence, and poverty, the Club’s Youth Development Professionals have guided numerous teens to overcome obstacles and emerge as stronger young adults.

Annually, the Club identifies exceptional teens who are accomplished and demonstrate potential. These Youth of the Year candidates, selected for their leadership, service, academic pursuits, and life goals, embark on a transformative journey. Evaluated on public speaking skills, poise, and self-confidence, these candidates delve into personal experiences, extracting meaning from talents and challenges alike. Their culminating project in this national program is a 3-minute speech, challenging them to articulate their journey so far.

This life-changing program demands a robust commitment, setting high expectations for each candidate. Workshops guide them in developing writing and presentation skills, finding their unique voice, and shaping their stories. The final speeches are presented to a distinguished panel of judges.

At the Celebrating Youth Event in January, the 2025 Youth of the Year was announced: Amaya Gomez, a junior at Deer Valley High School, representing the Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch.

2024 Youth of the Year Update

After being named the 2024 Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley Youth of the Year, Yarieliz Lopez went on to compete in the Arizona State Youth of the Year competition last spring. She formed lasting relationships with the other candidates from around the state and represented BGCAZ with poise and grace. Since then, Yarieliz has continued to be a standout teen member at the Ed Robson

Family Branch, and she even helped introduce and cut the ribbon on the Club’s new Panda Cares Center of Hope!

Yarieliz has also been busy performing in school and community theatre productions, and building skills for the future with AZYouthforce, BGCAZ’s teen workforce development program. She completed a paid internship with BGCAZ Athletics in the fall, and is currently interning at the Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury.

Yarieliz will graduate from North Canyon High School in May and plans to join the United States Air Force through a collegiate ROTC program, while studying mortuary science. Throughout her senior year, the Club has continued to provide Yarieliz with a network of support and the tools she needs to achieve her goals.

“When I arrived at the Club, I realized I wasn’t alone. The Club welcomed me with open arms and I found my new family.”

2025 Youth of the Year

Angello Porter-Johnson

Angello is a sophomore at Chandler High School and has been attending the Chandler Compadres Branch for over a year. He has been an active member of his Club from the start, as it gives him a place where he can unwind and find support amid his busy life.

Angello lives with his mom and six siblings, and as an older brother, he often takes on a caretaker role at home to ensure everyone else is settled before focusing on himself. The Club gives Angello a chance to just be a kid, playing volleyball, basketball, or sharpening his gaming skills with the other teens.

Angello is treasurer of the Chandler Branch Keystone Club and takes initiative to organize teen events like food drives and fundraisers. Keystone has taught him leadership and financial skills while giving him an outlet for his passion of giving back to the Chandler community. Outside the Club, Angello is captain of his school’s esports team, where he supports his teammates, manages gaming facilities, and makes tournament preparations for video games like Smash Bros. and Rocket League. Angello credits the Club with helping him be a better gamer and team captain, because the staff have taught him skills like discipline, composure, and effective communication to help him navigate challenges.

After high school. Angello plans to attend college and study biological engineering, supported by his family and Club staff. For Angello, the Club is more than an after-school program. It’s a second home where he can learn, grow in confidence, and contribute to his community.

BGCAZ Scholarship Fund

Paving the Way for

Futures Beyond Graduation

At Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, graduation marks an important milestone in a member’s journey, not the culmination. The BGCAZ Scholarship Fund is an on-going resource, offering alumni support and the invaluable opportunity to extend their education beyond high school. With a commitment to nurturing dreams and ambitions, this robust scholarship program has already granted over 320 scholarships, providing crucial financial aid to deserving Club members.

Key Features:

Financial Support: The BGCAZ Scholarship Fund extends financial aid and scholarships to qualified Club members, empowering them to pursue higher education and achieve their academic goals.

Scholarship Impact: In the 2023 - 2024 academic year, BGCAZ distributed $88,960 in scholarships, benefiting over 74 Club alumni. More than $166,200 in scholarships were awarded to members this past year. Our Teen Pathways & Career Manager works with students and families to complete applications, find additional resources, and mentors alumni as they pursue their dreams.

Notably, the program awarded two outstanding young women with the prestigious Renee Parsons Girls Leadership & Excellence Awards.

Sttarletta Evans, a senior in high school attending the Harry & Sandy Rosenzweig Branch, received the Excellence Award, securing a scholarship valued at up to $40,000. Sophia Aponte, a junior in high school attending the Swift Kids Branch, earned the Leadership Award and a scholarship of up to $80,000. Both awardees were also presented with new laptops and PXG backpacks, symbolizing the beginning of their ambitious journeys.

In 2023, the KAIZEN Youth of the Year Scholarship was generously awarded to support Club teens participating in the Youth of the Year program. The KAIZEN scholarship will continue to help teens to get closer to their dreams with significant support to help cover tuition for higher education. Thank you, KAIZEN for your belief in our teens and helping provide them with a bright future.

Ongoing Support: Beyond scholarships, BGCAZ maintains an education fund to aid current Youth of the Year candidates in their postsecondary endeavors. This fund covers college or technical training, school tuition, accredited classes, supplies, and other essential expenses not covered by conventional scholarships.

Support the BGCAZ Scholarship Fund: For those passionate about fostering educational aspirations, please consider supporting the BGCAZ Scholarship Fund. Contact us at 602-954-8182 or visit BGCAZ.org/donate to explore how your generosity can help Club alumni turn their dreams of post-secondary education into reality. Your support is a vital investment in the limitless potential of our future leaders.

SET A STUDENT UP FOR SUCCESS

While positively impacting workforce development

Started in 2018, AZYouthforce is a youth workforce development program where teens develop valuable professional skills and are matched to paid internships offered by Employer Partners.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

AZYouthforce trains and connects Valley teens to paid internships with quality employers across diverse sectors and locations.

■ Teens (ages 16-21) gain valuable, paid work experience, with mentors to inspire career and educational goals and growth.

■ 30-hour program developing customer service, mindset, resume writing, public speaking, and financial literacy skills.

■ Paid internships with our Employer Partners, and mentorship with an AZYouthforce Internship Case Manager.

■ Interns receive a minimum of one year of follow-up from our program.
