This year we are delighted to be hosting our awards in this wonderful larger venue at the Royal Lancaster, having out-grown the Londoner.
It’s so wonderful to welcome so many of you this evening, in what has been yet another challenging year.
I would firstly like to thank all our sponsors and business partners whose continued support during the good times and the bad, is so invaluable, if not essential to our Guild.
Without their generous support these events simply couldn’t happen.
This year I’m delighted to announce that we have included a Music Video category, to complement our ever-growing membership and representation.
We also continue to tweak our existing categories and budget bands to make the awards as fair as we possibly can.
There is an incredible amount of talent on show tonight amongst our nominees, which is a glowing testament to the continued excellence achieved by our Art Department members.
I am and always will be a strong advocate of the Art Department, it being the creative life-force and backbone to each and every production we work on.
Tonight, we are delighted to welcome again our host, the fabulous Mark Kermode, and I thank him too for his continued support of our Guild and championing the Art Department.
As we all know too well, 2024 has been one of the most challenging years in the industry’s history. Some of you have worked, but many of you have not.
A huge proportion of our industry has suffered enormously, and many have left the industry for good. As a Guild, we have tried to support our members wherever possible, with social events and networking events, whilst I have personally hosted several coffee meetings, aiming to provide a support network, all of which have been very well received and attended.
My view now, is that the industry has suffered the consequences of a big over-correction, and that the pendulum is gradually starting to swing back the other way, to some sense of normality.
There are many new productions, especially from abroad, that are planning to shoot in the UK in 2025, and we can only hope that work returns in abundance. I am confident that things are already improving, and we also have many new and exciting initiatives planned for the Guild and its members this year.
But as for tonight, we are here to celebrate and award excellence in Production Design and the Art Department.
I hope you all get the chance to mingle and meet old colleagues and new, create new connections with sponsors and crews alike, and have the most wonderful evening celebrating amongst friends.
Best of luck to all our nominees and here’s to good times ahead.

We are blessed to be able to support The British Film Designers Guild and their annual Production Design Awards.
These awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of the Production Design and Art Departments working in our industry and they shine a light on the talented individuals whose contributions bring amazing stories to our screens.
At CrewHQ we create career pathways and foster the next generation of talent, through a programme of innovative training. We are incredibly proud to be able to support The Peter Lamont Award which highlights the future stars of the next generation of filmmakers, celebrating their talents and amazing creative skill.
Many congratulations to all this year’s inspiring nominees and winners; we are excited to watch your career paths unfold and look forward to seeing your work on our screens in years to come.
Rico Johnson-Sinclair Director of CrewHQ at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden
Since childhood, I've been a lover of stories and their fictional worlds. But it was film in particular that fascinated me. The medium transported me as a viewer, and enabled me to witness unique realities more profoundly. In an attempt to replicate these experiences in the real world, I studied for a BA in Architecture.
However, it became apparent that in order to create something as immersive as I'd dreamed, I would have to look to production design; an industry that held an unboundness nature that can't be found in reality and would allow me to contribute in recreating memorable worlds.
Upon completing my degree, I was fortunate to be offered my first film job on Pinocchio, working with Ashley Lamont, Stefan Dechart and the team. Since then, I have worked with many talented and
passionate people on productions such as The Power, Napoleon, Blitz and, hopefully, more to come.
‘Creating’ became my way of expressing myself in ways that words can't, and the fact that my efforts have been noticed is encouraging. I hope to continue down this path, and while my eye is set on becoming an Art Director, I hope I can truly make a name for myself in this world. I’m excited to see where the future takes me.
Dance has been a core part of my life for 29 years, shaping my creativity and discipline. It instilled in me a love for performance and a fascination with the artistry behind the scenes. This led me to study architecture. I then worked as an Architect for six years in India, honing my design skills and spatial understanding.
Despite enjoying architecture, I sought a way to merge my love for design and performance. This led me to film. Pursuing an MA in Production Design at the National Film and Television School allowed me to blend my passions seamlessly.
Since then, I’ve worked in the Art Department, balancing roles as an assistant on major productions and as a designer on indie projects. Working on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a
dream come true, thanks to Mark Scruton and Nick Gottschalk.
I then worked on The Perfect Couple and Wake Up Dead Man, and when I could, I stepped into design roles, like with PIGS, where I was fortunate to collaborate with an amazing cast and crew.
In the next ten years, I hope to continue growing, learning, and creating, always staying close to the heart of storytelling. I can’t imagine life without it
After having a long career in research whilst at the same time pursuing my creative dreams as a professional artist and graphic designer, I stumbled across the Art Department. It was something I didn't even know existed until a few years ago. And what a revelation it was - I felt like all my adult life I had been working up to having a job like this. So I dropped my paintbrush and applied myself fully to learn draughting and practice all the software required to succeed in the Art Department.
So here I am! And I never imagined I would end up in Set Dec, which I knew little about, but what a wonderful, colourful and eclectic world to be in. Last year after finishing an 18 month stint working on my first big show, Sandman 2 for Netflix with Liz Griffiths, I
now hope to stay in this industry for many years to come, because nowhere else have I felt like hard work and real skill is rewarded and valued more than it is in our amazing film and tv industry.
Thank you for having me!

“We’re
so pleased to once again be sponsoring the BFDG Production Design Awards Planet Positive Award. Congratulations to all the finalists for their incredible achievements.
Sustainability has always been a priority for Sky Studios Elstree. We were proud to have been named BAFTA albert 2023 cohort’s ‘most sustainable studio’, awarded an overall score of 95%, which is the highest score for any studio, globally.
This achievement comes from applying expertise, experience, and dedication into all of our practices on site. Sky Studios Elstree is 100% powered renewable energy, a significant portion of which comes from the 3-acres of solar panels across the studio’s rooftops. Alongside this, we harvest rainwater, use sustainable led lighting and electric vehicles plus our operations on site are free from single-use plastic.
Our clients are also supported at every phase of production, to ensure it’s easy for them to make sustainable choices when they work at Sky Studios Elstree.
The Planet Positive Award aligns perfectly with our ethos, and with the wider ethos of Sky, who have launched a company-wide environmental impact programme, Sky Zero, to build a low carbon economy and inspire positive change for the planet.
We're excited tonight to be celebrating the talented and diverse Art Departments across the UK who are also championing the environment in the work they do."

“We are proud long-term supporters and home to the BFDG and are delighted to be sponsoring the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ this year.
The UK has the most talented crews in the world and it is wonderful to be able to celebrate them this evening, it is the people that make our industry so special. The Art Department is the heart of filmmaking and together creates whole worlds at our studios. This Award is an opportunity to shine a light on special individuals deemed by their peers to have made a positive impact. In a detail-driven, fast moving and
SENIOR ART DIRECTOR
I entered the world in London in 1961, surrounded by the vibrant energy of the ‘swinging 60s’ and the support of a creative family. My mother was a homemaker and an extremely elegant woman, my father an engineer in the military, ironically a great upbringing for an Art Director. As an artistic child and after (almost) completing my formal education, I began working as a freelance signwriter and pictorial artist.
At the age of 21, driven by my dreams and the perceived glamour of ‘Hollywood’, I did what anybody would have done and bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles! Armed with my life’s savings of around £300, a bag of clothes, a box of paintbrushes, I jumped on-board a ‘Freddie Laker’ flight. I obviously knew no-one in California and was strangely un-perturbed by the fact that I had no idea where I was going to sleep when
often high-pressure department nominees in this category are those who make a real difference to the department and their colleagues everyday with their creativity, innovation, kindness and thoughtful approach. Qualities that must be celebrated throughout our industry. Well done to all those nominated.”
James Rider General Manager, Pinewood Studios
I got there! On reflection that seems like quite a bold move, but it set the stage for an incredible adventure that has unfolded over the past 44 years. Having frankly blagged my way through the door at Paramount, I found myself in the graphics department and through that managed to immerse myself in every aspect of the Art Department. I’m proud to say that some of the films I've worked on have become true classics, standing the test of time and leaving an indelible mark on cinema.
I have become a member of BAFTA, voting in the Production Design chapter, and my affiliation with the BFDG since 2007 has deepened my commitment to this craft. I have also been fortunate enough to move into education, lecturing in design for stage and screen at Buckinghamshire New University. My passion for film remains unwavering; each time I step onto a set or drive into a studio, I am filled with the same excitement and inspiration as I experienced as a young man. With gratitude for my journey and pride in my accomplishments, I reflect on how fortunate I am to call this profession my own.

SUPERVISING ART DIRECTOR
I have been extremely lucky. I have spent my working life in a job that I have so enjoyed and initially, didn’t even know existed. So how did it start? I grew up in the seaside town of Worthing in Sussex and when I was about 15 years old I started visiting The Connaught Theatre Repertory Company - continuing to go every week for years to come.
After leaving school I studied Architecture at Brighton College of Arts and Crafts and nearby was the Theatre Royal. It was possible to buy really cheap tickets up in the vertiginous gods. The college also had a thriving film society which was my introduction to European films.
By year three of my course I realised that I really wanted to become a Theatre Designer rather than an Architect, so I wrote to my favourite Stage Designer – Sean Kenny. He replied advising me to get “that piece of RIBA paper in my hand” and to then come and see him. I found out that he had worked in the BBC Design Department – so I wrote to them!
I got an interview with Dick Levan, the Head of Department, and he offered me a full-time job. That was how it all started. A lucky accident.
The other person I owe my career to is the Head of Design at BBC Bristol, Sally Hulke. She took me on after I’d had a 17-year break to look after my two sons. After 18 months as a freelancer at Bristol I got my first feature film job. That is how it all started. I was so lucky.
dedicated their lives to bringing the very best in film and television content to audiences worldwide.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication and congratulations to all this year’s nominees and winners.

PRODUCTION DESIGNER
I was in the final week doing 3D Design at the Royal College of Art and Stuart Craig, who had been at the RCA 10 years earlier, put up a note asking if anybody wanted to design props for a science fiction film. Stuart was starting his first Production Design role on ‘Saturn 3’.
A career in films was never mentioned as any sort of realistic possibility but fortunately Stuart took me on, and I stayed with him on ‘History of the World Part 1’, ‘The Elephant Man’, ‘Cry Freedom’ and eventually becoming an Art Director on ‘Dangerous Liaisons’. Stuart also recommended me to Norman Reynolds for ‘Return of the Jedi’, and then on to ‘Return to Oz’, ‘Young Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Empire of the Sun’. Stuart and Norman were my two main mentors and although I didn’t quite get to their level, it has been fun trying!
After 10 years, I became a Production Designer on the ‘Young Indiana Jones Chronicles’ with George Lucas again. That led to George and Rick McCallum asking me to join the three`Star Wars’ prequels’, and then moving forward, working with Directors like Steven Soderbergh, Tim Burton, Brian Singer, Morten Tyldum, Louis Letteriere, and now Joe and Anthony Russo.
There are too many people to thank but all the help I was given is fully appreciated. I have worked on amazing projects, in different countries, often with the family traveling with me. And the truth is they deserve a ‘Life Achievement Award’ themselves for supporting me through all those adventures!
