INTRODUCTION Establishment of Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) Ipoh, Perak has a links with the Razak Report and insistence Malay nationalist who wanted to enhanced an education among a young Malays by state Independence on August 3, 1957. The headmaster of this school is tasked to formulate the concept of a boarding school ideal and accepted by the authorities education. From here comes the Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) and Sekolah Tun Fatimah, Johor Bahru. These school has provides the opportunities for students who are intelligent and smart students from rural areas to pursue for higher education. The establishment of this school is a bold attempt by the government in the history of national education. It is because at that time there’s no school that provide a English subject to a students.

The history of the Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman has began on January 2, 1957, it’s originally known as the Malay Secondary School Ipoh. In the early stages of its establishment, the school temporarily superimposed on five buildings once used by Malay soldiers as the administration, residences and stores located in Baeza Avenue Ipoh. After the building was abandoned by Malay soldiers on Nov 1,

1956, the forestry office in Kuala Lumpur was asked to help establish 12 new classrooms, 6 bathrooms and enlarge the kitchen area. all of these buildings were made of boards and were completed on January 18, 1957. The 4-acre school grounds were fenced with barbed wire fences.

SCHOOL PROFILE Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) has been build on 1957, same as our Malaysian Independence Day. Before that, this school placed at Baeza Avenue, Ipoh until the school is equipped with well-designed buildings and various facilities at Tiger Lane, that is now known as Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. STAR is known as Secondary School, Ipoh (M.S.S) The existences of STAR is related with Razak’s Reports and pressure of Malay’s Nationalist that really want education among the young Malays enhanced.

The first headmaster of Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman is Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato’ Seri (Dr) Haji Hamdan bin Syeikh Tahir (1957 until 1960). He is also the manager of secondary schools has been given the responsibility to formulate the ideal concept of full-boarding school accepted by the education authorities. Here is the starting of the existences of Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Ipoh; Sekolah Dato’ Razak , Tanjung Malim dan Sekolah Tun Fatimah, Johor Bahru. Those schools are giving chances to Malay’s student from rural area to further their studies to other level. This establishment is a bold attempt by the government in the history of education in the country because there are no schools that teach Malay’s students English learning. At the beginning, four subjects, namely Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics and Science, will be introduced in the “Sekolah Bestari” by using the latest technology as methods and techniques of teaching and learning. All teaching and learning materials are provided in the form of software designed by the Curriculum Development Center in collaboration with the Educational Technology Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia. To determine the success of the implementation of the “Sekolah Bestari” concept, teachers in selected schools will be given in-service training, particularly in the area of ​pedagogy for teaching and learning activities through the use of the latest technology. For the established schools, their teachers and administrators will be selected by the Head of the Best School Task Force under the School Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia. The development of the “Sekolah Bestari” has been a staple in the development of the inevitable education reform in education in Malaysia. This “Sekolah Bestari” is the only school to produce intelligent and knowledgeable students, and is expected to be able to compete in the face of the challenges of National Vision.

One of the unique thing about STAR is the rare location of hostels rather than other full-boarding school. This situations remain until today. Students has been placed in the hostels blocks that have been build following to their “rumah”. Rumah Hijau (Green House), Rumah Biru (Blue House), Rumah Hitam (Black House), Rumah Merah (Red House), Rumah Putih (White House), Rumah Kuning (Yellow House) to identify their affiliations for competitive purposes (sports, competitions). Currently students are grouped together in dormitories according to houses but not in the original blocks. The old Green House block was converted into a library and the old Yellow House Block into a store. Recently, the houses are called by nicknames such as Royal Blue, Green Grinds, Black Kingdom, Red Rouser, White Vigour and Yellow Legion though these nicknames are quite fluid and evolve from time to time. For example, in the past Green went by the nickname Evergreen, Yellow by Yellow Dragon, Black by Black Label, and others.

Other than that, STAR has also organized an international program with King’s College in rugby. A lot of friendly matches were held between the teams either at STAR or at King’s College. STAR is one of the best full-boarding schools in our country. Today, STAR has proven it when they has produced many efficient and good leader in all field of our country.

Other than focusing on curriculum development, STAR also emphasized student engagement in the co-curriculum. In the early stages, students were divided into several sports houses, the Rumah Hijau (Green House), Rumah Biru (Blue House), Rumah Hitam (Black House), Rumah Merah (Red House), Rumah Putih (White House), Rumah Kuning (Yellow House) lead by their sports houses teachers and assistants. These students are trained in various sports activities such as sports, gymnastics and exercise in the evening.

They were also been given permission by the Principal of Anderson School to use the field for playing football, hockey and rugby twice a week. Matches between the teams were also held. Until today STAR not only can keep their reputation in academic and co-curriculum but has also produced successful professionals in various fields such as politics, administrations, educations, business, constructions, civil service and others.

On year 1996, STAR is showing their shining with their basketball’s team to atone for the previous defeat. Through the willingness of players to sacrifice their learning schedule to practice has secure the title of “King Of Basketball” and the Northern Zone belongs to STAR on 1996. this unexpected success has allowed STAR to book tickets to the Festival of Basketball and National Cricket at SEMESTA, Raub on August,1996. however, STAR failed to show its superiority in MSSPK Kinta II as basketball players were involved in other game. The loses cause STAR failed to quality to the next level.

On the session year 1996/1995, the under-15 badminton team was represented by 6 players consisting of 2 students (form 3) and 4 students (form 2). STAR has made preparations by providing more frequent training at the DBI Sports Complex and the school hall on every Wednesday and Friday. The person responsible for giving them guidance is Mr. Alzahari b. Md. Taib.

In this tournament the STAR badminton team sent 2 singles and 2 doubles teams. Since it was the first tournament ever played by the STAR badminton players, they were a bit clumsy, but they gave a great fight and struggled to win the throne.

CLUB

On the same year 1996, the senior and leading Sciences and Mathematics Clubs were joined and made up of 57 members. Although the number of club members is small, it does not affect club activities. a variety of activities are planned and carried out to give members an in-depth knowledge of the latest Sciences and Mathematics at that time.

Among the activities are Science Quiz competition between form 3 students, fun math exercises and also studying the accuracy of brain and eye interpretation with exercises (Can you see).

Teachers are the school members who are directly has involved in the implementation and curriculum of the school. At Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) there are many experienced teachers. The teachers who teach in that school also is a quality teachers. Quality teachers can ensure students' education is secure. Most teachers who has serve in the Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) are experienced teachers. In addition, they have also served in Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) for a long time. To further define success in implementing the concept of Smart School (Sekolah Bestari), teachers in the Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) will be given in-service training, especially in the field of pedagogy for teaching and learning activities through the use of the latest technology. For smart schools such as Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) to be established, their teaching and administration staff will be selected by the Head of the Bestari School Task Force under the School Division of the Ministry of Education Malaysia. The development of Smart Schools has been a staple in the development of education that is inevitable in education reform in schools in Malaysia. This smart school is one of the only schools to produce intelligent and knowledgeable students and is expected to be able to compete against the challenges of national vision.

Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) has 58 teaching staff from various fields. Their headmaster Mr. Mohamad Zakaria Bin Mohamad Yusof has served in the school on 1st April 2019. Even though he’s still new in that school, but there’s a lot of change that he made for that school. Their school Senior Assistant Administration is Ustazah Fatihah Binti Mohamad has serve for that school since 2008, Senior Assistant Student Affairs Mr Shanun Bin Abdul Ghani has served in Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman since 2003 until now. Senior Assistant Co-curriculum Mr Azli Bin Yaacob is the longest teacher who has serve in Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) where is from 1996 until now which is it’s already 24 years. There are also has many teachers that serve at the school for a long time.

Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) has offer many subjects including a basic subject. For student Form 1 until Form 3, they have offered a subject such as Bahasa Melayu, English Language Subject, Sciences, Mathematics, History, Geography, Pendidikan Islam, Asas Sains Komputer or Reka Bentuk dan Teknologi and the different between Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) with the other school is they have an International Language in their subject. The subject they have offered for students Form 4 and Form 5 is Bahasa Malaysia, English Language Subject, Mathematics, Pendidikan Islam, History, Add Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the last is International Language. The teacher and students had a great teamwork to make sure that their school always provide a good experience whether in studying or in the co- curriculum. Every year also Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) become a best school in achieve a good result in PMR or in SPM. Without a great teacher, it’s not easy for a student to achieve something.

EVENTS OF OPENING STAR ď ľ

On 14 May 1958, the school was named Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman, taking in conjunction with the first HRH Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

The opening and renaming of the school was symbolized by the Prime Minister unveiling a brass plaque with the inscription of the school name mounted on a granite boulder placed in the roundabout in front of the main school block. The ceremony was witnessed by the whole school in the presence of many dignitaries including the Deputy Prime Minister, YAB Dato Abd Razak Hussain, Federal Ministers and the Menteri Besar of Perak YAB En Ghazali Jawi. The occasion was celebrated with an exhibition of handiwork put up by the boys, a mass drill and a display by a military band, a soccer match between the young school team and the junior team of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, and a variety concert.

‣ The school's naming ceremony was officiated by YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya at that time. On 23 September 1958, DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong had graced the official visit to Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

➢The hope and the aspiration the government placed on the school in helping the Malays were reflected by some of the words of the Yang Dipertuan Agong, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Education in their messages commemorating the day: “The main object of your school is to impart knowledge more particularly in English and to mould character, and it is imperative that there should be schools of this kind in Malaya, if the Malays, as a race, are to be able to climb the educational ladder and to enter technical colleges and universities.”

Tunku Abdul Rahman, Prime Minister, Federation Of Malaya. 8 May 1958 “The ceremony today marks a new chapter in the history of Malay education, a milestone for the Malay secondary education, since the first primary Malay residential school was started about fifty years ago……The school, as well as the other Malay Secondary Schools and classes, have been established with the purpose of meeting the wishes and resolution of the Government and the people of independent Federation of Malaya towards raising the standard of Malay education, and through it, to attain further development of the Malay language and the improvement of the living standards of the Malays.

ALUMNI OF DATO' SERI IDRIS BIN JUSOH 

Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) has produced many successful school graduates since its inception. Dato’ Seri Idris bin Jusuh was one of the successful students of STAR schools.



He started schooling in SK Jerteh Centre. Excellent UPSR results, he continued to continue his studies at Premier STAR Secondary school (Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman). At Sekolah Menengah STAR he became a previgilator and managed to get excellent results until he continued his education to the A-Level (matriculation) in Australia before the MCE (SPM) decision was announced.

Some political figures have also demanded their knowledge as Dato ' Awang Adek and Tan Sri Annuar Musa. At the end of A-Level programme in Australia, he received excellent results and qualified to continue with the engineering (Engineer) there. When he was in Australia, he received his father's death news and his grandfather (died in a single week interval) and he decided to return to the land for his mother's counsel to continue his studies in Malaysia.



He furthered his studies in USM, and while in USM, he was active in cocurricular until he was appointed as the President of USM Student Representative Council from 1978-1979. He was said to visit the library in the free time for their education, and received excellent results of each examination (obtained a first class graduate) until he got the "Golden Award Best Student“ the OVERALL excellent student of USM for the year 1980.

➢ He became the first Malay student to get the award in USM, and was a pride and example for Malay students to succeed in the university. He then furthered his studies at Master level overseas at New Haven University, USA and was active in co-curricular when he became an overseas student president there. He also took Arabic lessons in Jordan, and a number of courses at leading universities such as Harvard (USA),France and England. ➢His academic excellence was evident from the school again. Is one of the best students at Premier STAR School (Ipoh)[6], then get the matriculation offer to Australia which is only given to the EXCELLENT student of the STAR's school although SPM results have not been released, then grabbed the OVERALL best student of USM by having a FIRST class degree from USM, Master, and the learning of religious knowledge by his grandfather (Tuan Guru Haji Hameed) who was a scholar ' and religious teacher in Besut at the time, clearly showed his ➢ Dato ' Seri Idris bin Jusoh is the chairman of FELDA who was appointed on 1 May 2020 replacing Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor. He was also the former Minister of Higher education from 2015 to 2018, a former education Minister II (a coalition of Education Minister & Higher Education) from 16 May 2013 until 28 July 2015. Prior to this, he was the Menteri Besar of Terengganu from 2004 to 2008, Deputy minister of entrepreneur from 1995 to 1999. Idris became famous in UMNO and Malaysia politics when he led the state of Terengganu through a Barisan Nasional party that successfully dominated Terengganu from PAS Party and was appointed Menteri Besar of Terengganu. He held the position since march 2004 with a majority of 2 per 3 Terengganu state Legislative assemblies.
