Cloud scalability and flexibility makes it a perfect tool for building an online shop showing rapid user growth. E-commerce grows dynamically everywhere around the world. According to “E-commerce in Poland 2016� report by Chamber of Digital Economy and Gemius, 48% out of 25.8m Polish internet users shop online - that is over 12 million people.

Bonprix is one of the biggest European e-commerce fashion brands. The company was established in 1986 and runs online stores in 29 countries, offering over 30 thousand products. It has more than 30 million customers, with the online store being the key distribution channel. Media4U operates 7 online bonprix stores in Poland, as well as Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Hungary.

Priorities and Challenges Security, Flexibility, SEC The customer was looking for a scalable and secure storage tool for over 2 million product images. Once the project was launched, another key issue was the SEO image optimisation.

Flexible IT infrastructure - e24cloud public cloud and e24files object storage

IT infrastructure had to be also fully compatible with an online store requirements, i.e. it should be scalable depending on sales periods, flexible to expand as the product portfolio grows, and ready for varied customer influx.

Taking into account customer expectations and current IT market trends, Beyond.pl suggested a dedicated IT environment based on e24cloud public cloud and e24files object storage.

Solutions and Advantages Business Continuity, Intuitive Address Translation Beyond.pl team created a two cluster based infrastructure for bonprix, considering different content the customers see. Each cluster can be easily scaled both horizontally and vertically using the e24cloud panel. It also lets the customer monitor virtual machines on an ongoing basis.

Additionally, we’ve implemented a keepalived mechanism. In the event that any of the virtual servers is unavailable, traffic is automatically redirected to another one and server further. Machines take over their IPs, with redundant infrastructure ensuring smooth flow of data. Since the transfer often exceeds 1Gb/s, content provision is shared between specific IP addresses at the DNS level. All virtual machines have also been divided between separate Hypervisors.

How did we ensure SEO image optimisation? “We have a single file structure for several shops from different countries. Each shop uses a different language. We had to come up with a mechanism, which would allow for different names of the same image file for each and every online store, making its Google indexing easier. Media4U was responsible for the concept, with Beyond.pl providing the technology,” concludes

Tomasz Knaur, Application Development Manager at Media4U. Thanks to the developed application, e.g. a “red dress” phrase is automatically changed to “czerwona sukienka” in Polish. In e-commerce, search engine positioning translates into sales and profit, hence the issue was very important for the project.

From the technical point of view, the solution is based on an automatic address change. When a server receives a request, an image is sent directly from the cache, and if it’s not there, a transparent address change is made, and the message is sent further to an object server. The server then returns the right object, and the string is changed for the appropriate link. The above translation mechanism allows for intuitive link naming and lets the user figure out quickly what the name relates to.

“Thanks to e24cloud.com, we could not only adjust the computing power we needed in running our day-to-day business, but make sure we are for unexpected website traffic increases. At the same time, we’ve also optimised our costs,” explains Tomasz Knaur. We’ve managed to balance the finances using a ready-made tool that was compatible with other external services, e.g. S3 by Amazon. It reduced the time needed to transfer 2 million files to the cloud.

Virtualisation means also reduced number of physical servers needed and lower risk of potential hardware failures. We provide the services for Media4U and bonprix using our own physical infrastructure.

Summary e24cloud public cloud and e24files object storage made the transfer of over 2 million graphic files to the cloud efficient and compatible with other tools used by the customer. Keepalived mechanism ensures continuity of data transfer in case where a virtual machine goes down, and the intuitive address translation improves bonprix search results. Scalability of cloud resources combined with the fast and flexible option to extend the environment mean websites are always available.
