The Bridge January 2017

My first job The first of a new series

Les Brame

My first job was as a sixteen-year-old in Martin’s Bank, one of four banks in Urmston, near Manchester. In passing, I’ll repeat that: four banks in a place much the same size as Bewdley.

The bank was a smallish affair, with a long mahogany counter behind which the two tellers presided. One of them was the Chief Clerk, a kindly man, as I remember, and of course quite elderly. Probably in his forties. He had a watch about which he boasted that it was so accurate that it only lost thirty seconds in a week.

My job was course at that tender age, as a dogsbody - a fetcher and carrier. One of the first jobs in the morning was to descend to the strongroom and carry up the big heavy ledgers in which every transaction was meticulously recorded by hand. I also had to carry up the bags of coins for the tills, another job requiring strong muscles.

More fun was the task of taking customers’ cheques to the appropriate branch in town. All the juniors would meet in the street with the bundles of cheques and carry them into the banks in turn. I suppose this alarming lack of security was all right. No-one tried to intercept us, anyway.

After a couple of months, I was moved to the branch in the next town as a little step up the banking ladder. I was doing much the same things but with the extra job of crossing the road to the butchers opposite to get hot pies for the bank staff lunchtime. Those pies were wonderful, and I can still smell that succulent aroma.

My next job took me away from banking, but the bank had given me my first taste of employment and more importantly, it was there that I met my future wife.

Do you remember this? If so what year?

January - all the fun of Christmas and holiday time now over, it’s back to our routines. Thinking about the whole subject of routines the other day as I was cleaning my teeth, I stopped to think about daily routines and how many times I’d done this one. Twice a day for - well, quite a few years…. that’s 730 x - hang on a minute; leave out the first six years of baby teeth; that’s - look, I’m not wasting time doing sums on a piece of paper this late in the afternoon. Let’s just say I’m quite expert in the tooth cleaning department after years of practice. Anyway, it reminded me how much of our lives is spent in routine. Even quite young children’s days are spent on unvarying routines, some of which have taken many days to inculcate by their worn-out parents. Wake up, get up, wash and dress, eat your breakfast, get ready for school. Mostly all this is done on automatic pilot, with some not-so-gentle persuasion on the parents’ part. It’s fun to realise in later life how many of our parent-imposed routines have very little to do with logic, and yet have survived to the present day. For instance, I haven’t eaten food in the street since I was eleven. It was completely forbidden by home and school and means I have an uneasy relationship with any food not on a table. Mainly, though, routines are a necessary, even essential part of our existence. If we had to work out afresh how to get ourselves up and out of the door each day we’d take hours longer and would wear out our brains in no time. Like that little rhyme about a centipede: A centipede was happy - quite! Until a toad in fun Said, 'Pray, which leg moves after which?' This raised her doubts to such a pitch, She fell exhausted in the ditch Not knowing how to run. We get through most of our day without much conscious thought, thus leaving us plenty of time to make sensible decisions, have exciting ideas and generally leave each day a little lovelier for our presence. Or at least, no worse off than we found it when we got up. Although I have a project for this month: I’m going to buy an eclair and eat it in Load Street!

Bewdley Library

I always welcome January because it means there's a whole year until I have to face the festive season again. Nobody's happier than I am on January 2nd!

Whilst it still freezes outside, mornings and evenings are cold and dark and we are bereft of the sparkle and 'joy' of 'Strictly', we look forward to warmer, lighter times and plan how we are going to make changes to our lives; some small, some bigger, and all intended for the better.

We have decided to change the time of our Rhyme Time (formerly on Friday mornings) to Wednesday mornings, 9.30-10.00am. This is to avoid clashing with other activities in the town that are currently running at the same time on Fridays. Hopefully some of you will be able to make Wednesdays and we can build our group up again.

It will take place in our brand new children's corner. Come along from Wednesday 4th January, 9.30am. Peter Rabbit will be waiting.

Do you know any keen readers who are unable to leave the house? Our Library Service at Home provides monthly books for borrowers who are unable to come down to the library themselves. If anyone springs to mind, pop in and have a chat with Anna about whether we can help. Hope we all have a very Happy New Year! Kay Sanderson

Wyre Forest Scottish Country Dance Club

You may remember seeing our duck house in Jubilee Gardens during October. If you were wondering about our club, let me tell you more.

We’re a friendly group of people who meet on Tuesday evenings from 8 – 10pm at Wribbenhall Parish Rooms on Kidderminster Road, Bewdley. Complete beginners are welcome and you don’t need to bring a partner – just come along. Your first session is free and then it’s only £2 a class, which includes refreshments in the break. It’s best to wear comfortable clothes and soft, flat shoes to dance in.

It’s good exercise, both physically and mentally, but above all it’s great fun! After the Christmas break we start again on January 10th - so why not join us? 13

Bewdley Development Trust (BDT) wants to help bodies involved in long-term social, environmental and economic sustainability of the Wyre Forest landscape.

BDT was closely involved in the Grow With Wyre project, which ran from 2008 and 2012, that was set up to help restore the unique landscape of Wyre Forest and celebrate its rich working history. At the end of the project, the lead national partner, The Forestry Commission, asked BDT to help to carry on some of the work of the project in three specific areas, and provided funding for this. Much of this funding has already been well utilised, but some remains. As BDT is moving to a more commissioning than implementation role, it would prefer to support other bodies rather than to carry out this work itself.

BDT therefore invites expressions of interest for funding to enable work in these two areas: Communication about the Wyre Forest and its history Developing Low Carbon Communities

These expressions of interest should be brief (no more than 2 sides of A4) and must show:

What the money would be used for, and how this relates to the categories above

What long term benefit would be achieved and over what period

That the body making the application is constituted to provide clear responsibility and accountability for any funding and its uses.

There is limited funding available for these two areas (£1500 and £1800 respectively) so, although there is no deadline for applications, early submission is recommended. Please email applications to: admin@bewdley.org.uk, with Grow With Wyre in the subject line.

What do squirrels do?

If you see pines cones like the picture to the left, then the pine cones have been eaten by a squirrel! All species of squirrels live in pine forests and they use the habitat to their benefit. While the squirrels feed on a variety of foods including nuts, plants and berries, they also eat pine seeds that are obtained from the cones. 19

A purple hat - or take advantage of life!

She takes a look in the mirror, when she’s:

3 years: Looks at herself and sees a Queen

8 years: Looks at herself and sees Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty

15 years: Looks at herself and sees Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Cheerleader - if she does not have PMT and sees a fat, pimply and UGLY girl (- Mum, I can’t go to school looking like this!)

20 years: Looks at herself and sees "I am too thin / thick, short / long, too lank / curly hair" but decides to go out anyway.

30 years: Looks at herself and sees "I am too thin / thick, short / long, too lank / curly hair" but decides that she did not have time to fix herself, so she goes out anyway.

40 years: Looks at herself and sees "I am too thin / thick, short / long, too lank / curly hair" but says "At least I’m clean" and goes out anyway.

50 years: Looks at herself and sees "I am" and goes wherever she wants.

60 years: Looks at herself and reminds herself of all the people who cannot even look at themselves in a mirror anymore. Goes out and conquers the world.

70 years: Looks at herself and sees wisdom, laughter, ability - and goes out and enjoys life.

80 years: does not care about the appearance. Just puts on the purple hat and goes out to have fun in this world. Perhaps we should all put on that purple hat earlier! Anon

Christmas Lights switch-on and Victorian Market

A drizzly cold day didn’t deter the crowds who came to see Bewdley in Victorian mode. With plenty of stalls, people in costume and Queen Victoria with Lord Ponsonby, the Queen’s private secretary, in town, a good time was had by all.

Repair Café After a successful first year, Transition Bewdley is to continue the Bewdley Repair Café in 2017.

Numbers of repairs have grown over the past months and the November Repair Café broke records both in terms of the numbers of customers and the number of successful repairs carried out. While tool sharpening remains the most in demand of all repairs, keeping volunteer Peter Whittle working non-stop, there was a sudden increase in numbers of table lamps being brought along for the electrical experts to fix. Perhaps the early nights have reminded people that their lamps are not working.

Clocks too have been set ticking again thanks to clock enthusiast and expert, Peter Archer who has dealt with some beautiful and very old time pieces. Other repairers have also been developing their skills in getting long dormant clocks and watches working again but they tend to leave the large and antique ones to Peter. Over the past months items ranging from food blenders to radios and leather jackets to children’s train sets have been fixed. The proximity to the car park has enabled customers to bring in larger items such as lawn mowers and bicycles. Over the past 7 months over 360 items have been brought for repair and sharpening with a success rate of over 80%. Even when items cannot be repaired the volunteers have been able to give useful advice as to where to obtain spare parts or specialist professional help can be had.

Part of the ethos of the Repair Café is to encourage people to use local professional repairers where they exist, rather than throw items away and also to give people the confidence to undertake simple repairs for themselves. A growing number of customers have gone away armed with the knowledge of where to obtain spare parts and confidence to fit them themselves.

More and more volunteer repairers have also come forward to help though there is always scope for more. Transition Bewdley which runs the Repair Café are in particular urging people who know how to sharpen a range of garden and kitchen tools to volunteer in order to reduce the queues for this almost forgotten art. If anyone is interested to find out more about volunteering, please contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424.

The Repair Café sessions will commence again on Saturday 21st. January from 10a.m. till 2p.m. and continue on the third Saturday of each month in St. George’s Hall. While waiting, customers can enjoy a sociable chat and delicious home-made cakes in The Hall Café. Repairs are free though donations are welcomed to cover costs such as insurance and acquiring specialist tools. John Rhymer

Bewdley Medical Centre Improved Services Repeat prescription service from Monday 30th January 2017

To improve service to our patients we are introducing a safer, easy and convenient way to order your repeat prescriptions.

We offer many different options to suit your individual needs whilst ordering repeat prescriptions, such as:

In person: you can tick the drugs you require and return the repeat slip to the surgery or your chosen pharmacy Fax: your request to us on 01299 404364

Post: your request to us.

Online: You can order your prescriptions online 24/7, 365 days a year from anywhere in the world at www.patient.co.uk/access Booking GP appointments

To improve both patient access to a GP and continuity of care we will be making some changes to our appointment system. As from the beginning of February, if you need to see a GP you will first need to book a telephone consultation with a Doctor who will call you back that day at an agreed time. If appropriate, they will arrange an appointment for you to be seen in surgery the same day. There will be no changes to how you book to see a nurse, or to book into any of our clinics.

If you are registered for Online Patient Access you will be able to book your telephone consultation online, on the same day. When calling the surgery please ensure that you provide us with your correct telephone numbers.

How does it work?

You phone the surgery and the doctor will call you back at an agreed time.

The doctor will call you back to discuss your problem with you and agree what to do.

You may only need advice or a prescription, or you may need to see a doctor or nurse. The doctor will offer you an appointment the same day if necessary.

Puppy Walking

I am delighted to share with you all, the news that, in 2016, three puppies that were 'walked' in Bewdley have qualified as working dogs.

Roni, Fran and I are so proud of Jeanette, Eva and Yashka, and extend our thanks to the businesses, bus companies and good folk of the town, who have welcomed the pups and made their socialisation a positive experience. When the dogs qualify, their owners are asked for 50p. This is so no one is prevented from applying for a dog because of the cost. The owners can choose whether or not to contact the puppy walker. We know the area 'our' pups are working in and I have received a 'thank you' card from Yashka's owner in Derbyshire.

At present, Roni is training Peggy, who has been accepted onto the Guide Dog Breeding Programme and if all goes well, will have a litter of puppies in the future. Roni will explain more about this in the months ahead. Delphi, training with Fran, is just over a year old. She has a very willing, calm personality and will thrive in the next challenge, I'm sure, as she begins the formal training programme in the near future. Milly (four months) arrived in October and many of you will have seen her skipping along by the time you read this! A Golden Retriever, she is full of fun and mischief, but responding well to her training. On behalf of Roni, Fran and the puppies, I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2017. Gabi

What to do in the garden in January

The Royal Horticultural Society advice for January - the coldest month: In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximize light. Don't forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce for them over winter. You can also start planning next year's vegetable plot. Top 10 jobs this month 1 Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch 2 Clean pots and greenhouses ready for spring 3 Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already 4 Repair and re-shape lawn edges 5 Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out 6 Prune apple and pear trees 7 Start forcing rhubarb 8 Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season 9 Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds 10 Make a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect against peach leaf curl 31

Clothing For Refugees

Your response to our appeal for clothing and phones for refugees has been bountiful. To date we have sent 35 large bags (think bin bag size) to local charity People in Motion who send direct to refugee camps in Syria, Lebanon, Greece and northern France where there are still many displaced people.

A small number of refugees from Syria arrived in Kidderminster from late summer onwards. They received some of your donations, especially warm clothing, as they arrived with only summer clothes. Thank you also to those of you who gave money which has gone to local refugees and People in Motion. There Will Be No Further Collections Until January 2017

All Saints Church Wribbenhall will have an ongoing collection from 8th January (open after the Sunday 9.30am service till 11am) and Mondays 10am -12.30pm

St Anne's Church Bewdley are taking a break from collections until March while decorators work inside the church.

The most needed items are NEW underwear, hoodies, joggers/jeans, male and female in SMALL and MEDIUM. All ages for children.

Used unlocked smartphones for PAYG SIM cards are still needed, especially to help displaced children stay in contact with charities.

Many thanks, Sheila Lowe

Digitally Famous

Although two of the most famous names in the computer world – the Internet world, more precisely – are now plainly familiar they did sound funny in their early days. Yahoo once was a word used to express delight [e.g.Yahoo! I’ve done it!]; the dictionary defines yahooas “not very intelligent or interested in culture,” and “one of a race of brutes resembling men but subject to the Houyhnhnms in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels 1726; rude, unsophisticated, uncouth.” David Filo and Jerry Young apparently liked the definition of a yahoo and, in April 1994, used it to rename the Internet service their founded four months earlier as “David’s and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web.” They added the exclamation mark after the name and explained it’s backronym to be “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.” Sean Anderson, on the other hand, had numbers instead of words in mind when he suggested another name for Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s BackRub search engine (written in 1996 in the java and python computer languages). In 1997, Sean suggested googolplex, after the mathematical unit that refers to extremely large numbers, but Larry decided on the shortened form: googol. According to David Koller of the Stanford University, Sean misspelled the word as “google.” The rest is history of extremely large numbers. The term googol was first mentioned in 1938 by Edward Kasner and referred to in the book Mathematics and the Imagination that he co-published with James Newman in 1940. Googol was coined by Kasner’s 8-year-old nephew, Milton Sirotta, as a reply to what name he would give to a really large number. It sounded kinda funny until we started googling ourselves and other things. DEFINITION: Computer – A device designed to speed and automate errors. All computers wait at the same speed. Error: Keyboard not attached. Press F1 to continue. Press any key to continue or any other key to quit. Press any key… no, no, no, NOT THAT ONE! KEYBOARD: An instrument used for entering errors into a system. HARDWARE: The parts of a computer which can be kicked. To err is human; to really mess things up you need a computer.

St Anne’s Church – We’re Repainting Our Ceiling!

From 9 January to 3 March 2017 the main part of St Anne’s church will be closed because of ceiling decorators working in the Chancel, Nave, Aisles and balconies. This is the last part of the works funded by the Government’s Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund. No services will take place at St Anne’s Church during this period, but services will be available every Sunday at All Saint’s Church, Wribbenhall at 9.30 am and at St Leonard’s Church, Ribbesford at 11.15 am.

The café and Community Transport offices in St Anne's Church will be open as normal during the re-decoration. We hope the end result will be a much brighter church inside for all to enjoy.

Coming Home

January is a month for huddling close to the fire and drinking hot chocolate with the cat on your knee. One shouldn’t have to go outdoors till March. Unfortunately, one’s boss can often take a dim view of “It was all dark and horrible out yesterday so I didn’t come in” as an excuse. Even those of us now away from the workplace find that trips out are sometimes necessary. A lot of us find ourselves taking the train from Kidderminster into Birmingham and then returning thankfully to our much cosier home here in Bewdley. Over the years of travelling on this train I’ve picked up an assortment of Interesting Facts about places along the line. Here’s a few to share with you - and feel free to add to the list for next month.

Rowley Regis is so called because it used to belong to the king as part of his hunting forest. I love the little crowns on posts round the station. The Jewellery Quarter station goes past a churchyard; Alfred Bird, of Bird’s Custard, is buried there. If you look out of the window just after Rowley Regis you’ll see the highest point in the West Midlands, Turner’s Hill; which is 271m above sea level. (For comparison, the roundabout at the top of our bypass is 100m high). And Smethwick Galton Bridge station is named after the road bridge built by Thomas Telford over the canal. It’s Grade 1 listed and was named after Samuel Galton, a member of the Lunar Society.

There are other more personal things to be noted; an outstanding little Black Country pub I know at Old Hill, the fact that Birmingham people can travel for free as far as Stourbridge, so can theoretically travel from there to Coventry for free, lucky so-and-so’s, and the quickest route from Moor Street station to Marks and Spencer. But that’s enough for now. Margaret

Bewdley Town Council News January 2017

Town Council Grants Do you represent a local community group or charity in Bewdley? The Town Council have two grant funding schemes to help local groups fund general running costs, specific projects and/or promotional activity. Grants up to a maximum of £1500 can be given, but each application is considered on its merits. Details can be found on our website, or you can contact the Town Clerk directly at townclerk@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Deadline for applications is 31st January 2017.

Calling all Community Groups! The Town Council in conjunction with St George’s Hall are planning a showcase event at the Hall in April 2017 which will be an opportunity to tell residents and visitors what your group or organisation does, sign up new members and also recruit new volunteers. The event will be completely free for stallholders and attendees. There will be a pre-meeting planned with groups who would like to take part early in the New Year. If you might be interested in taking a table at the event and would like to know more, please contact Kyle Daisley at community@bewdleytowncouncil.org or call 01299 400157. Green Space adjacent to former Library The Town Council are asking the community whether we should name the green space next to the former library in Load Street car park once the new car park has been installed and the area landscaped. The area also contains the beautiful copper beech tree and the Town Council are going to be looking after this area once the work is complete. If you have any suggestions, please contact us via our website, or e-mail the Town Clerk at townclerk@bewdleytowncouncil.org or pop your suggestion in the letter box at the Museum.

Community Flood Volunteers In order to keep the temporary Beale’s Corner barriers, the Environment Agency (EA) is asking for our help. Could you provide information to the public on the ground during barrier set up/take down, or keep an eye on the barriers whilst they are up? You could even be one of our volunteer co-ordinators making sure the rotas are full and managing information from the EA. High visibility vest provided! If you think you might be able to help, please contact community@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 3rd January 2017 and 6th February 2017. Agendas of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance. All Agendas and Minutes are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. 49

January in the Forest

This is the time to make resolutions for the New Year, so here I go!

1. Spend more time walking and cycling in the great outdoors. I really love getting out there and psychologists agree that being out of doors (especially in woods, for some reason) lifts the spirits. What looks like a dull, drizzly day from indoors is always better once you get out. There are various walking and cycling groups who would welcome you to join them, e.g. the forest Health Walks who meet at Callow Hill every Tuesday and Sunday at 10.30am for 11am and will help you to build fitness at a gentle pace, or the Cycle Touring Club who organise rides in the area (www.kidderminsterctc.org.uk). It’s remarkable how much you can notice of the turning of the seasons when you look for it: the green shoots and flowers of snowdrops, little leaves growing on honeysuckle, the first hazel catkins showing their yellow pollen and inconspicuous flowers of chickweed and white dead nettle near the ground. A quick investigation of the leaf litter will show that there’s plenty still going on in the ‘underworld’ too!

2. Make my garden as wildlife-friendly as possible. I just scared away the greater spotted woodpecker but the thicker-skinned nuthatch is now tucking into the sunflower seed we put out and the usual gang of bluetits, coal tits and goldfinches aren’t far away. I saw very few butterflies, bees or other insects this year and think that a concerted planting of lungworts, violets, primroses and early-flowering scented shrubs will boost their food stores in the tricky spring months. This will, in turn, help insectivores and other creatures higher up the food chain. 3. This does NOT include the mole, which I shall encourage to tunnel off somewhere else.

4. Help and encourage other people to do the same with their gardens. It would be great to have more schools visit Uncllys Farm. The Wildlife Watch group are to come a couple of times and other events, such as Farm Open Sunday in June, will bring in members of the public.

5. Finish the pond! This will amuse my friends, who have heard me say the same thing for at least 4 years! The wildlife like it well enough (see 2) but aesthetically it leaves a lot to be desired. Once I get the cobbles, gravel and rocks placed I can finish the edge planting. This will provide even more nectar for insects, perching places for emerging dragon- and damselflies, escape routes for frogs, toads and newts, and cover for birds such as the grey wagtails which drink and bathe at the edge, running the risk of giving Archie the cat hunting practice.

I’m hoping that, if I do all the above, I’ll manage to lose some weight too! Linda Iles
