Infrastructure & Monument

New York Trilogy III: Redesign of the Manhattan Bridge Teamate: Shiyue Liu

Our chosen site, located at the intersection of Division Street and Forsyth Street, features two distinct spatial scenarios under the Manhattan Bridge. On the left, there is a condensed commercial complex representing everyday life, while on the right, the bridge’s structural support serves as a backdrop for bustling street life and stalls. These vibrant stalls and stores demonstrate the potential for community prosperity in the underutilized space. Surrounding the Greek colonnade are various religious institutions, highlighting the need for diverse spiritual spaces.

Our project transforms the bridge footings into a rocky monastery that contrasts with the above-ground architecture. The underground space creates a sense of monumentality and sublime terror, offering relief from routine and stress. The journey up the mountain represents the pursuit of the sublime and holiness through the integration of nature, architecture, and Chinatown aesthetics.

Jane Jacobs’s “eyes on the street” concept fosters community vigilance by naturally attracting people’s interest and involvement in the vibrant activities of a healthy street. This form of organic social surveillance eliminates the need for hardware and cameras, providing an efficient approach to building community safety.

To prevent public housing from becoming centers of crime, a holistic perspective on neighborhood safety becomes crucial. Although highrise public housing has been criticized, the emergence of low-rise alternatives has proven beneficial. Lower-level structures offer advantages such as enhanced visibility, natural light, ventilation, and community participation. Consequently, high-rise public housing can provide a level of safety and social interaction similar to bustling streets, where constant interaction and mutual observation occur.

Compass of the praire project enhances Tibetan nomads’ lives with upgraded canopies. These canopies, made of wood and yak hair, are flexible, transportable, and easy to disassemble. Divided into two removable parts, the yak black tent has a fixed bottom with essential facilities. Permanent structures are strategically built along popular routes near water sources, ensuring nomads can maintain their lifestyle with improved living conditions and basic infrastructure.

Sichuan, facing severe disaster situations, requires a prioritized development of a professional regional emergency rescue center. Current rescue efforts lack proper equipment and a unified command center, leading to ineffective outcomes, secondary disasters, and economic losses. To address this, the entry design for the Southwest Regional Emergency Rescue Center competition aligns with national guidelines. The center accommodates 300 residents, trains 500 rescue workers, and supports 3-5 large helicopters. This comprehensive design ensures an efficient and enjoyable complex with essential training, residence, and supporting facilities for long-term needs.

The primary objective of the project is to improve the learning environment and prepare for the expected increase in student enrollment over the next decade, as outlined in the Master Facility Plan (MFP).

To achieve this, the modernization initiative will focus on adding a new library and gym, redesigning the building layout, upgrading essential systems like HVAC and plumbing, and equipping the premises with state-of-the-art furniture and tech- nology. These enhancements will establish a modern and conducive educational setting that not only aligns with the school’s bilingual program but also fosters a culture of academic excellence.
