In mediaeval times on Mothering Sunday church goers would visit their “‘mother” church in Lent - the main church or Cathedral of the area. As such it became an occasion for family reunions and honouring mothers. A special cake called a simnel cake is baked in celebration. A “bring and share” meal will follow the service.
