Work Hard / Play Hard A two month focus programme* in which artists respond to the current labour situation with a light-hearted answer or poetical twist. Weâll be delving into the business world, office aesthetics which prompt efficient working, management lingo and methods. Together we search out the absurdity and playfulness into everyday situations, poetry in meeting rooms and cubicles and take a look at the flip side of the capitalist system.
*A focus programme is a coherent programme spread over 2 â 3 months, in which a specific topic, oeuvre, artist, movement or style is examined in-depth and unravelled.

In Part Two, Ancarani meticulously records all the actions of the crew on a deep-sea platform; for three weeks, six scuba divers stayed alternately in the recompression chamber on board the platform Luna or were at work on the bottom of the ocean, all their actions being tied to very strict protocols. Part Three offers a special insight into the wonderful world of the modern operating theatre, in which the patient appears to play a mere supporting role. The operation is performed by robotic arms that are operated by the surgeon by means of a joystick. A robot performing an operation on a human being is no longer science fiction. In fact, it is so real that it is the subject of a documentary.

If artificial intelligence fails, anonymous manpower takes over the technology.

For team-building purposes, the workplace evolved from individual offices to open plan Essay by Laura Herman as far back as the 80s. Today, these offices have become playgrounds. Every morning, Google employees enter an environment where game elements and inspiring design should encourage more cooperation and creativity. Sounds tempting, but it begs the question whether corporate culture does not impinge on real âfreeâ time in that way, when work and play increasingly merge into one? And how should the artist, bearing in mind what Richard Florida put forward, relate to the business world now that creativity and flexibility appear to be essential skills in the average CV? It is just this kind of questions that intrigue CĂ©line Berger. any professional environment. This is all summed up in a white shirt with starched collar, the epitome of the hard-working business man. Another palpable image is that of the handshake. On two computer screens, Berger displays dual video work which shows footage of stock videos of hands shaking. Firms use this type of footage quite often to illustrate their ambitions and promising future. To Berger, the handshake represents the sealed deal, the compressed space between supply and demand, between desire and product, with the consumer being left to play catch-up. Indeed, the latest novelties are served to him on a platter long before he is aware of the need. Mission, too, a Möbius ceramic strip, refers to this absurd creed of endless growth: âWe continually exceed our customersâ increasing expectationsâ. It is not only the archetypical images of corporate culture that feed Bergerâs inspiration, management discourse, too, is significant. While it draws a clear distinction between âweâ, the management, versus âthe customersâ, it regulates relationships in the workplace. The title of the exhibition, Best Practices, is taken from the blog of Amy Gallo, editor of the Harvard Business Review. âAct like a leader, before you are oneâ is just one of the tips & tricks she shares with her readers. In the video work La ronde, a business woman reads out four of Galloâs case studies in a neutral manner, inspired by possible scenarios in the workplace. She subsequently examines the ethical codes with a view to optimising the working atmosphere and performance levels. All well and good, but should employee behaviour and manners be dictated down to every last detail?
Despite appearances, Bergerâs work shows little in the way of irony. As an artist, much like the lady in La ronde, she adopts a neutral stance. She merely exposes the ambivalence of corporate culture. At the Beursschouwburg, CĂ©line Berger is showing the humour and aesthetics of the business world as well as its eroded values and impossible goals as two sides of the same coin.
