INLEIDING

Documentairemakers Gerard-Jan Claes en Olivia Rochette leven en werken in Brussel. Zelden was een zin van dertien in een dozijn, zoals die veel voorkomen in artiestenbiografieën, zo treffend. Hun nieuwe documentaire Grands travaux is namelijk precies dat: leven en werken in Brussel. Zowel voor beide filmmakers als voor de leerlingen van de beroepsschool Anneessens-Funck met wie ze samenwerkten.

Eerder besteedden Claes en Rochette al aandacht aan de leefwereld van jongeren en de manier waarop die wordt verbeeld. In 2010 studeerden ze af aan KASK – School of Arts in Gent met Because We Are Visual, een audiovisueel essay dat de uiteenlopende, exuberante gemoedsstemmingen van jonge YouTube’ers samenbalt.

Uit de meanderende montage van online videodagboeken spreekt zowel de onbekommerde vrijheid als de benauwde beklemming van jongeren die openhartig en ongedwongen uiting geven aan hun verdriet, dromen, baldadigheid en vreugde. De personages van Because We Are Visual beseffen wel degelijk dat ze flirten met de grenzen tussen privé en openbaar, maar verwelkomen net de anonieme publieke ruimte van het internet. Ze bestaan immers in beelden.

Inleiding

Hun afstudeerfilm leverde Claes en Rochette een Wildcard op van het Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, wat hen de mogelijkheid bood Grands travaux aan te vatten. Eerst maakten ze nog hun debuutfilm Rain (2012) in opdracht van Rosas, het dansgezelschap van Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker waarvoor ze sinds hun studies audiovisueel werk verzorgen. De documentaire Rain richt de blik op de heropvoering van De Keersmaekers gelijknamige choreografie in het Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris.

Vanuit het voorbereidende werk van de dansers kijkt de film naar de wrijving tussen klassiek ballet en hedendaagse dans achter de coulissen van de Opéra. De persoonlijke betrokkenheid van Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, die het repetitieproces vaak van op een afstand volgt, breekt door via registraties van telefoongesprekken met haar naaste medewerkers. Opnieuw is het de filmische ruimte die een ontmoeting gestalte geeft.

In 2013 richtten Rochette en Claes samen met docent en documentairemaker Elias Grootaers het productie- en distributieplatform Zéro de conduite op. Daarmee organiseren ze filmprogramma’s in de Beursschouwburg, waar Rochette en Claes van 2013 tot 2016 geassocieerde artiesten waren. In 2013 waren ze ook medeoprichters van Sabzian, een online platform dat met zijn agenda en beschouwingen rond cinema een levendige cinefiele cultuur wil bevorderen. Deze initiatieven dragen bij tot een discursieve ruimte waarin films en reflecties over films elkaar aansporen om de verhouding van cinema tot het leven voortdurend te her-denken.

Vanuit het spel van lezen en schrijven, tonen en kijken, filmen en gefilmd worden kwam ook hun nieuwste film Grands travaux tot stand. Op hun eigen zoektocht naar vormen vinden de filmmakers de zoektocht van de jongens op Anneessens-Funck naar een woning, werk, een toekomst... Claes en Rochette maakten een film met medewerking van de leerlingen Ahmadou Barry, Mamadou Diallo, Achmed Xussein en Mohamed Abdi. Ze ontmoetten elkaar in een spel met vormen, in een film.

INTRODUCTION

Documentary filmmakers Gerard-Jan Claes and Olivia Rochette live and work in Brussels. Rarely a sentence worth a dime a dozen, the likes of which are frequently used in bio-blurbs, was so telling. Their new documen­ tary Grands travaux is, indeed, just that: living and working in Brussels. For the filmmaking duo as well as for the pupils at the vocational school Anneessens-Funck with whom they collaborated.

In previous work, Claes and Rochette already paid attention to the environment in which youngsters grow up, and to the way their world is imagined.

In 2010, they graduated from KASK – School of Arts in Ghent with Because We Are Visual, an audiovisual essay that encapsulates the diverse, exuberant mood swings of young YouTubers. The meandering montage of online video diaries exudes both the carefree freedom and the stifling oppression young people experience while frankly and unpretentiously expressing their grief, dreams, mischief and joy. The characters of Because We Are Visual realize that they are flirting with the boundaries between private and public, but embrace the anonymous public space of the Internet. After all, in these images they exist.

Introduction

With their graduation film, Claes and Rochette won a Wildcard from the Flemish Audiovisual Fund, which allowed them to start with Grands travaux. But first they made their debut film Rain (2012), commissioned by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s dance company Rosas, for which they have been providing audiovisual work since their student days. The documentary Rain turns to the restaging of De Keersmaeker’s eponymous choreography at the Ballet de l’Opéra national in Paris. Through the preparatory work of the dancers, the film looks at the friction between classical ballet and contemporary dance in the wings of the Opera. The personal involvement of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who often follows the rehearsal process from a distance, breaks through in recordings of telephone conversations with her closest collaborators. Again, the cinematic space embodies an encounter.

In 2013, Rochette and Claes co-founded the production and distribution platform Zéro de conduite with teacher and documentary filmmaker Elias Grootaers.

Together, they organize film programs at the Beursschouwburg, where Rochette and Claes have been associated artists from 2013 to 2016. In 2013, they were also co-founders of Sabzian, an online platform whose agenda and reflections about cinema set out to foster a vivid cinephile culture. These initiatives contribute to a discursive space in which films and reflections about films incite each other to constantly re-think how cinema relates to life.

The interplay of reading and writing, showing and looking, filming and being filmed also sparked their latest film, Grands travaux. Searching for form as filmmakers, they find the boys at Anneessens-Funck searching for a home, work, a future... Claes and Rochette made a film in close collaboration with the youngsters Ahmadou Barry, Mamadou Diallo, Achmed Xussein and Mohamed Abdi. They met each other in a game of forms, in a film.

De ruimten hebben zich vermenigvuldigd, ze zijn verbrokkeld en veelvormig geworden. Tegenwoordig vind je ruimten in alle soorten en maten, voor elk gebruik en voor alle doeleinden. Leven is van de ene ruimte naar de andere gaan en proberen je daarbij zo min mogelijk te stoten.

Jullie film speelt zich grotendeels af in de beroepsschool Anneessens-Funck in hartje Brussel. Over zowel de school als de stad bestaan heel wat uiteenlopende opvattingen. Waar begon Grands travaux voor jullie?

We dachten al heel vroeg aan de titel Grands travaux. Vervolgens hebben we daar verschillende associaties aan vastgehaakt, al zijn die niet allemaal even expliciet in de uiteindelijke film beland. Veel van deze invalshoeken zagen we samenkomen in AnneessensFunck, de school waar Grands travaux zich voornamelijk afspeelt. In de eerste plaats verwijst de titel naar de ingrijpende werken die Brussel in de jaren vijftig en

zestig tot een bouwput maakten. Daarbij hoort ook het contrast tussen de bouwplannen die een stad vanuit een vogelperspectief vormgeven en wat die dan concreet als publieke ruimte opleveren. Deze ingrepen zijn het symbool geworden voor bepaalde grootstedelijke problemen die Brussel tot op heden kenmerken.

Zoals Rudi Laermans aangeeft in zijn boek Ruimten van cultuur [2001], hebben die naoorlogse ‘grote werken’ een stedenbouwkundige catastrofe ingeluid die tot op vandaag doorweegt in de Brusselse politieke lethargie. Brussel is een erg verbrokkelde stad geworden. Dat zie je nu nog dagelijks bevestigd. Ik ben opgegroeid in Brussel en heb de stad altijd zo ervaren: in een staat van voortdurende afbraak en opbouw. Het is een stad die haar vorm zoekt, die het moeilijk heeft zich een beeld toe te eigenen.

Een beeld, een fantasma heeft de naoorlogse geschiedenis van deze stad gedomineerd, maar dan op een onvolkomen wijze. Modern worden werd in Brussel een permanente toestand: altijd opnieuw kaalslag, bouwwoede, afbreken en betonneren. Onophoudelijk verkrotting hier, renovatie ginder: deze stad sterft gedurig, maar op steeds andere plekken, zodat ze ook permanent kan worden heropgefrist, vernieuwd, gerestaureerd. Brussel is kortom een werkwoord, alleen weet nog nauwelijks iemand waarom de ‘Grands travaux’ indertijd zijn begonnen en tot op de dag van vandaag voortduren.

Er bestaat een mooie RTBF-reportage uit 1966 die spreekt over de impact van deze werken en reeds pleit voor een modernisme met een humaan gezicht. In het begin van de reportage staat de journalist te midden van wat een ruïne lijkt en beschrijft hij de toenmalige werkzaamheden. Toen al was Brussel een stad waar opbouw en afbraak ongestoord konden plaatsvinden, zonder dat men oog had voor de gevolgen. Daardoor

leeft Brussel in een permanente staat van verandering.

Die ongrijpbare veelvormigheid trekt ons erg aan als filmmakers.

We staan hier niet tussen de ruïnes van een stad die vernield werd door een bombardement, een aardbeving of een opstand. (…) We zijn niet in Vietnam of in Leuven. We staan gewoon in het centrum van de stad Brussel. Zoals u ziet, is het niet altijd nodig ver te reizen om aanwezig te zijn bij bepaalde verwoestingen. (…)

Onlangs vertelden enkele buitenlanders me: Brussel is echt verbazingwekkend. Eender waar men gaat, is men aan het bouwen. En overal tegelijkertijd.

Toch vormt niet het Brussel van de stadsontwikkelaars de kern van jullie film, maar wel de ruimtes van de jongens en dan vooral hun school.

We vonden de link tussen het werk van de jongens op school en de werkzaamheden in Brussel erg mooi. Zowat alles in de film draait rond werk.

Dit basisconcept kan op vele manieren gelezen worden. De ‘travaux’ uit de titel slaat onder andere op de beroepsopleiding die de jongeren volgen. Ze krijgen de opdracht een aantal ‘kleine werken’ uit te voeren.

Zo moeten ze de elektrische installatie van een slaapkamer of badkamer installeren, een videofoon plaatsen of het schakelschema voor een nieuwe woning tekenen. Daarnaast krijgen ze sollicitatietraining die hen voorbereidt op de arbeidsmarkt.

De school is dus een plek waar zij aan hun toekomst werken, volgens een opgelegd plan, net zoals de ‘grands travaux’ als doel hadden een toekomstig Brussel vorm te geven. Voor ons gaat Grands travaux dus over hoe deze jongens in Brussel hun leven proberen in te richten.

Arbeid is noodzakelijk om te overleven en allesbepalend voor hoe je deze wereld ervaart. Tegelijkertijd is het een structurele verplichting die helpt onze kapitalistische samenleving draaiende te houden. In die optiek bevat arbeid ook een nutteloze component.

Zo voel je dat de werken in Brussel vooral de opkomende Belgische welvaartstaat moesten dienen. Wat er gedaan werd maakte niet uit, zolang er maar gewerkt werd.

Werk staat maatschappelijk altijd op de agenda, maar vreemd genoeg is het erg afwezig in de meeste films. Behalve bij Jean-Pierre en Luc Dardenne bijvoorbeeld. Hun personages moeten zich steeds verhouden tot een wereld die ook sociaal-economisch bepaald wordt, vaak in relatie tot werk.

Een van de grote wensen van de mensheid is het transformeren van dingen, om dingen op te bouwen, te vernietigen, en opnieuw op te bouwen. En om niet enkel passief naar de wereld te kijken. Ik denk dat dit het doel is van de mensheid. Een man of vrouw zijn betekent dingen veranderen. En cinema toont dingen die in verandering, in beweging zijn.

Ten slotte verwijst ‘travaux’ in de titel niet alleen naar Brussel en naar de dagelijkse handelingen van de jongeren, maar ook naar het onontkoombaar structurerende element van film. Voor ons is film steeds een constructie. De bouwstenen moeten in elkaar passen, anders zakt de hele film in elkaar en mist hij beweging of spanning. Daarbij is de zoektocht naar een manier van werken voor deze film heel bepalend geweest.

ZOEKEN NA AR VORMEN

Doorheen de vertolking van een stad met haar veelbetekenende verschijningsvormen is men in deze film [À propos de Nice] getuige van het proces van een bepaalde wereld.

Grands travaux was dus ook voor jullie een zoektocht naar hoe jullie werk eruit kan zien.

Op veel vlakken voelt Grands travaux aan als een eerste film. We zijn in 2010 afgestudeerd met Because We Are Visual. Het materiaal van deze film was afkomstig van YouTube. We hoefden onze kamer dus niet uit. Die bron was onuitputtelijk en we moesten de vorm van de film louter zoeken in de montage.

Vervolgens maakten we Rain, een opdrachtfilm voor Rosas waarbij zowel het kader waarin we werkten als

de verhouding tegenover de mensen die we filmden contractueel vastgelegd was. In zekere zin was Rain meer gesloten dan Because We Are Visual. De Opéra national in Parijs krijgt voortdurend filmploegen over de vloer en bakent af waar en wat er gefilmd mag worden. De balletdansers die we volgden terwijl ze een choreografie van Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker inoefenden, zijn het gewoon om gefilmd te worden. Bovendien lag het op voorhand vast dat we een film moesten maken van de audities tot aan de première, al waren we binnen dat erg strikte kader heel vrij. Bij Grands travaux was er daarentegen geen kader, alles lag open.

Grands travaux voelde als een volgende stap, zowel op vormelijk als op praktisch niveau. Eenmaal we de keuze hadden gemaakt om op Anneessens-Funck een film te draaien, hebben we even moeten zoeken naar het juiste spoor. Toen we voor het eerst kwamen filmen op Anneessens-Funck, waren de reacties van de leerlingen vaak scherp. Ze vroegen ons terecht waarom we net die school hadden gekozen en wat we precies kwamen doen.

Aanvankelijk konden we deze vragen moeilijk beantwoorden.

Onze zoektocht speelde zich ook deels af op een technisch niveau. Voor Rain filmden we met een camera die de productie voorhanden had. Voor Grands travaux zijn we op zoek gegaan naar een bepaald type camera, want een camera stuurt je uiteindelijke manier van kijken. Daarbij moesten we rekening houden met financiële beperkingen. Heel wat professionele camera’s zijn simpelweg te duur voor een lange draaiperiode.

De betaalbare, semiprofessionele camera’s waarmee wij werken, hebben verschillende sensoren en omdat we niet veel licht konden zetten, was de sensorgrootte van de camera belangrijk voor het uiteindelijke beeld. Een 35mm-, 16mm-, tweederde-, driederde- of fullframesensor heeft, in combinatie met bepaalde

lenzen, telkens een heel eigen resultaat. Veel moderne camera’s hebben een erg grote sensor (35mm of fullframe). Hieraan hangt een bepaalde esthetiek vast waarbij je een klein detail heel scherp in beeld hebt terwijl de rest wazig blijft.

Dat spel met een beperkte scherptediepte is vaak een clichématige benadering van de filmische ruimte.

Inderdaad, maar voor Grands travaux waren we op zoek naar duidelijkheid en helderheid in het beeld.

We zochten een camera waarmee we in elke lichtsituatie mooie beelden konden maken, zonder de onscherpte het beeld te laten regeren.

We wilden beelden met een zacht verloop naar de achtergrond, zoals bij 16mm.

De onscherpte van 35mm zorgt voor een instantabstractie en zet je ertoe aan om bepaalde details in het beeld te isoleren. Voor mij doet onscherpte heel vaak uitschijnen alsof alles wat vaag in beeld komt er niet toe doet. Terwijl we het net mooi vinden dat ook de achtergrond van belang is. Zo voel je veel meer de verhouding tussen een personage en de ruimte.

We hebben meerdere camera’s getest, waaronder een 16mm-pelliculecamera. Maar we kwamen snel tot de conclusie dat we digitaal wilden filmen. Met 16mm-film koop je vandaag snel een bepaald artistiek kapitaal, een valse rijkdom voor je beeld. Dan moet je helemaal scherp krijgen waarom je precies voor 16mm-film kiest.

Het geeft het beeld op zich een soort fetisjwaarde.

Brussel. Wat ons betreft verwijst 16mm-film naar een andere tijd. Uiteindelijk viel de keuze op de Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Die heeft de omvang en de prijs van een smartphone. Voor zijn prijs is het een heel goed toestel, maar het zou leuk zijn om in de toekomst met een betere camera te kunnen werken. Met een goedkope, digitale camera blijft toch steeds het gevoel hangen dat je een gevecht met het apparaat aangaat.

Jullie hebben ervoor gekozen om met een statische cameraopstelling te werken.

In zekere zin hebben we er niet voor ‘gekozen’.

We werken altijd met een vast kader. Grands travaux bestaat bijna uitsluitend uit mediumshots. De 25mm-lens die we aangekocht hebben voor deze film bepaalde mee de afstand die we steeds tot het onderwerp aannamen.

We zijn erg tevreden over deze lens. De keuze om te werken met een camera op statief en met een vaste lens zorgt voor bepaalde beperkingen. Bij documentaire heb je altijd het gegeven dat je dingen mist, dat je te laat bent om een situatie te filmen. Met een statief en vaste lens mis je eigenlijk bijna alles. Je kunt niet meteen inzoomen om iets te capteren, je moet je fysiek verplaatsen en je camera opstellen. Dat is het tegendeel van point and shoot, maar het was ook niet onze bedoeling om alles te capteren.

De keuze van je apparatuur dwingt je om na te denken over het kader, over hoe je iets wilt verbeelden. Je moet een positie innemen. Kiezen voor een bepaalde camera werkt tegelijkertijd beperkend en bevrijdend, aangezien een deel van de vele mogelijkheden erdoor wordt geëlimineerd.

Veel van jullie scènes hebben een klassieke kwaliteit, bijvoorbeeld met de mediumshots die de personages op borsthoogte in beeld brengen.

We filmden altijd met klassieke cameraopstellingen en op ooghoogte. Het ziet er eenvoudig uit, maar het was erg moeilijk om het juiste beeld te vinden.

Veel beeldmateriaal was onbruikbaar, het was net iets te close of te ruim, het licht zat niet goed... Veel van de scènes bevatten materiaal van meerdere draaidagen, we moesten dus bijna elke scène tijdens het draaien stap voor stap opbouwen. We hebben uitgebreid gezocht hoe we zouden filmen, ook al valt dat in de film zelf niet op.

De grens tussen een bruikbaar en onbruikbaar beeld was erg dun.

Door die klassieke découpage kwamen we na verloop van tijd uit bij een vorm van ‘simulatie’. Korte scènes werden opnieuw opgevoerd voor de camera, om zo bijvoorbeeld tot het shot-tegenshot te komen waarin twee jongens discussiëren over FC Barcelona en Real Madrid. Het shot-tegenshot is een van de oervormen van de cinema en heeft voor mij iets van een volwassen vorm.

De jongens net daarin plaatsen, levert een mooi spel op.

Veel van de dagelijkse handelingen op school hadden ook al dat simulatie- of spelaspect in zich. We zagen dat bij de sollicitatietraining in de klas, tijdens hun spreekbeurten en ook in hun praktijkoefeningen. Elke leerling heeft een klein houten hok waarin hij moet werken en oefeningen moet maken. Die houten hokken groeiden uit tot decors waarin de jongens zichzelf speelden.

Zonder dat we het hen ooit hebben moeten uitleggen, als we dat al zouden kunnen, snapten Barry, Mamadou, Achmed en Abdi heel erg goed waarnaar we op zoek waren. Naarmate de opnames vorderden, leken zowel zij als wij beter te begrijpen welke toon en welk ritme goed werkten. De ontmoeting met deze specifieke jongens heeft de film in beweging gezet. Ze hadden echt

iets bijzonders en waren heel open. Dat had ook met hun leeftijd te maken. Bij oudere leerlingen verliep het iets stroever.

Grands travaux speelt met een bepaalde miseen-scène, maar het vertrekpunt blijft, denk ik, steeds observatie. We proberen geen vorm te vinden die door een idee gedicteerd wordt, maar vertrekken steeds van bestaande mensen en plekken. Het blijft voor ons dus altijd documentaire cinema. Vaak wordt het onderscheid tussen documentaire en fictie als redundant beschouwd.

Zo zei de Nederlandse documentairemaker Johan van der Keuken ooit: “Licht op een scherm is altijd fictie.”

Maar voor ons is er toch nog steeds een verschil en blijft er in documentaire cinema een andere spanning aanwezig.

Van der Keuken was zich daar zelf ook van bewust.

Het einde van Herman Slobbe [1966], de tweede film die hij maakte over blinde kinderen, legt die spanning bloot.

Als hij de jongen Slobbe achterlaat, zegt Van der Keuken in de voice-over: “Alles in een film is een vorm. Herman is een vorm. Tot kijk, aardige vorm.” Die verhouding tussen werkelijkheid en vorm is onlosmakelijk verbonden met documentaire cinema. Fictiecinema, die niet met deze spanning speelt, heeft voor ons een heel andere inzet.

De posities van de jongens ogen heel uitgekiend, bijvoorbeeld wanneer ze in de klas sollicitatietraining krijgen. Wat nog benadrukt wordt door de opeenvolging van shot en tegenshot.

We wisten dat deze sollicitatietraining een onderdeel zou zijn van hun lessen. Een sollicitatiegesprek is sowieso een spel tussen twee mensen, een interactie vanuit tegengestelde perspectieven. We hadden op voorhand beslist om er een tweede camera bij te halen, die gehanteerd werd door Ruben Desiere. Het is de

enige scène in de film die met twee camera’s is gefilmd.

We hebben de mise-en-scène op een bepaalde manier georganiseerd, maar dat is een opstelling die je kiest, daarbinnen blijft de klas wel nog bewegen. Je houdt niet alles in de hand.

Op welke manier grepen jullie dan in bij de conversatiescènes?

De ingrepen waren erg klein. Zo gaven we de jongens bijvoorbeeld nooit een volledige dialoog, maar vroegen we wel om een bepaalde conversatie nog eens over te doen, om die te kunnen filmen vanuit een ander camerastandpunt. De observatie wordt gekaderd, in een bepaalde vorm of blik gedwongen. Wanneer we een handeling opnamen, hoefden ze bijvoorbeeld hun gsm’s niet uit te zetten. Als een personage dan telefoon kreeg tijdens de opname en er een mooi gesprek volgde, filmden we door. We zetten dus een kader op en gaven de jongens bepaalde richtsnoeren die ze in het shot konden gebruiken: een handeling, een gespreksonderwerp of een beweging.

We plaatsten hen niet in een vooraf door ons bepaald idee of script. Wat ze precies zegden is van hen.

Het is hun tekst, het zijn hun verhalen en anekdotes.

Door deze aanpak ontstond er wel een vorm van concentratie die een alledaagse werkelijkheid op scherp zet.

Een beetje zoals een amplifier dat doet. In de werkelijkheid die ontstond in de documentaire verschenen kleine scheurtjes, waardoor het geheel begon te schuiven.

Het was steeds een balans tussen mise-en-scène en observatie. We creëerden een kader waarin gespeeld kon worden. Een spel waarin de werkelijkheid het steeds overnam. Hun eigen tiener-zijn brak door dat spel.

Er groeide een verbond tussen ons en de jongens, in de

manier waarop ze bepaalde dingen uitvoerden. Ik vind dat prachtig.

Olivia Rochette

Je wordt als toeschouwer uitgenodigd om naar een gesprek over voetbal of liefde te luisteren en te kijken hoe de jongens zich verhouden tot de wereld rondom hen. Het was opmerkelijk hoe ze zelf na verloop van tijd leken te weten hoe ze moesten bewegen op de snijlijn tussen natuurlijk en gestructureerd spreken, waarbij ze de onderdelen van een eerder gesprek moesten herhalen.

Ze gingen echt mee in het idee dat film een spel is.

Ze beseften al snel dat ze konden spelen met de ruimtes, hun gestes en de gespreksonderwerpen.

Net als in Because We Are Visual gaat jullie aandacht uit naar de leefwereld van jongeren.

Als je een lijn zou willen trekken door onze drie films, dan valt op dat jeugdigheid steeds centraal staat.

Because We Are Visual dompelt je onder in een wereld die voornamelijk door jongeren bevolkt wordt. Bij Rain lag de focus onder andere op de jongste danseres van het gezelschap [Léonore Baulac]. En nu hebben we dus in een school gefilmd. Ik denk dat die fascinatie ook te maken heeft met wat we bij de Poolse schrijver Witold Gombrowicz terugvinden. Hij schreef veel over de jeugd en hun relatie tot vorm. (…) zijn ‘verliefdheid’ op Jeugd (Onrijpheid in de zin van het ongevormde, dat nog alle mogelijkheden bevat) en zijn strijd tegen Vorm als verstarring.

Jeugd hunkert naar de vorm, die houvast, die een imago geeft. Zij, die vorm weten te hanteren, d.w.z.: die over de macht beschikken aan anderen vorm op te leggen, zijn in hun ‘rijpheid’ ten dode gedoemd. (…) [Gombrowicz verbeeldt] varianten van de lelijkheid die situaties en relaties doorweekt

en bederft, zodra men ‘rijp’ wordt, gezwicht voor vormen, schema’s, categorieën. Vormgeven is ook corrumperen.

Hoe je het ook draait of keert, zoals Gombrowicz het zo mooi stelt: alles moet geordend worden. Maar bij jongeren is de vorm die ze aannemen nog niet verstard, eerder wankel, en balanceert die nog tussen een ‘rijpe’ en een ‘onrijpe’ vorm. Dat is ook belangrijk voor ons als filmmakers: we proberen te kijken hoe vormen niet verstarren, maar in beweging blijven. Daarom trekt Brussel ons ook zo aan. De stad heeft zelf iets vormeloos, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd voortdurend naar vorm zoekt.

In Because We Are Visual bouwden jullie een wereld met YouTube-beelden, in Grands travaux vormen de interacties van de jongens de bouwstenen. Toch is er bij geen van beide films sprake van een vastgelegd script.

Ik merk dat we erg terughoudend zijn om op voorhand zaken vast te leggen. Ik heb altijd het gevoel dat we krijtlijnen uitzetten waar we mee spelen. Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar Out 1 [1971], waarin Jacques Rivette een improvisatiestrategie hanteert met enkele vastliggende elementen die in de groep acteurs worden gegooid.

Met die elementen wordt fictie gemaakt en waar die fictie dan uiteindelijk uitkomt, maakt in Out 1 niet zoveel uit omdat het in zekere zin om het spel zelf gaat. Zo vonden we het bij Grands travaux fijn om in de conversaties rond bepaalde onderwerpen te werken. We speelden met elementen als voetbal of het zoeken naar een job, bijvoorbeeld in telefoongesprekken, maar waar die conversaties naartoe gingen was tijdens het filmen zelf nog onduidelijk. Er ontstond een improvisatie waarbij alles voortkwam uit de specifieke situatie op die bepaalde plek. Daarbij hanteerden we inderdaad geen vastgelegd script, maar we verzamelden op voorhand wel foto’s,

muziek, eigen reflecties, citaten en meer beschouwende tekstfragmenten die relevant waren voor de film. Samen vormden die een kader waarmee we werkten. Een beetje wat Nicolas Philibert “programmer le hasard” noemt.

Ook bij Because We Are Visual lag vooraf geen duidelijke richting vast. We zijn vertrokken vanuit één beeld – een meisje met roze onderbroek dat haar lichaam via een webcam laat zien – en van daaruit is vervolgens een film gegroeid in de montage. Het verschil met Grands travaux is dat Because We Are Visual en Rain tot montages leidden met een meer fragmentarisch karakter.

Grands travaux heeft daarentegen scènes van soms tien minuten, die een bepaalde ruimtelijkheid en chronologie respecteren.

Olivia Rochette

Voor onze twee vorige films verzamelden we materiaal en gingen we pas in de montage op zoek naar de toon, de structuur en het ritme. Het is niet zo dat we nu helemaal anders werkten. Maar tijdens het draaien kozen we wel voor een bepaalde montagevorm, een découpage. Daarin ligt het grote verschil. We hebben in de draaiperiode gewerkt op afgebakende scènes, waardoor het materiaal een logica had die een bepaalde montagevorm dicteerde. Dat was nieuw voor ons en daarom ook erg spannend. Je kon de film bij wijze van spreken niet meer ‘redden’ of helemaal omgooien in de montage.

De montage treedt in deze film minder op de voorgrond, maar eigenlijk was het onze moeilijkste montage tot nu toe. Ze vereiste meer denkwerk.

We botsten sterk op de keuzes van tijdens de draaiperiode, daar konden we niet meer van weg. Veel van het werk in de montage ging nu over de interne dynamiek

van de verschillende scènes, hoe iemands blik je naar een volgende scène brengt en hoe deze scènes zich tegenover elkaar verhouden. De lengte van de scènes dicteerde steeds een bepaalde structuur.

De gedraaide scènes hadden iets monolithisch.

In een tekst van Eric de Kuyper over Chantal Akerman die op de website van Sabzian verscheen, zegt De Kuyper dat Akermans lange shots ook voortkwamen uit een soort wantrouwen tegenover montage. Na onze twee vorige films wilden we misschien wat af van het fragmentarische karakter dat die hadden. We merkten dat we meer directheid zochten. Bovendien hebben we nu voor het eerst vanaf het begin met een monteur gewerkt.

We hadden het geluk te kunnen werken met Dieter Diependaele.

Montage kun je op verschillende manieren bekijken. Sommige monteurs hebben een erg verticale aanpak, de harde cut zeg maar, terwijl anderen, zoals Dieter, meer horizontaal werken. Als er wordt gesproken over een opvallende montage, heeft dat doorgaans te maken met abrupte ingrepen, met een in het oog springende, verticale werkwijze. Die verticaliteit kan zeker haar plek hebben in een montage, maar dan moet ook die bekeken worden als een ritmisch gegeven, vanuit haar horizontaliteit. Wij vinden het mooier om horizontaal te werken, met een precieze aandacht voor het ritme van de film. De montage verloopt daarbij als een beweging door de tijd, die een bepaalde geest in het materiaal blaast.

Dan kom je snel bij het idee van Johan van der Keuken dat je in een montage alles naar zijn waarde moet zetten. En Dieter heeft een ongelooflijk fijngevoelige manier van werken die erg aansluit bij hoe wij ook op voorhand al met de personages en het materiaal omgaan.

Zo’n proces vraagt tijd, omdat je niet met een bijl in je materiaal kunt hakken, maar erg bedachtzaam in je

materiaal kruipt en het voorzichtig in een bepaalde vorm probeert te kneden. Dieter is een monteur die daar met een onafgebroken concentratie over blijft waken en scènes blijft bijschaven tot ze hun waarde hebben gevonden in het geheel.

KLEIN EN DIRECT

Wie zich te groot waant voor kleine werken, is vaak te klein voor het grote werk.

Ook bij Rain maakten jullie overwegend binnenopnames in één ruimte, de Parijse Opéra national. Toch is de verhouding tegenover de ruimte en de personages die zich erin bewegen anders in Grands travaux.

Gerard-Jan Claes

We hebben lang gezocht hoe we de buitenruimte van Brussel en de bewegingen van de jongens door de stad erin konden verwerken. Uiteindelijk speelt de film zich voornamelijk af binnen de muren van de school en komt Brussel op een minder directe manier de film binnen.

Vergeleken met Rain is de benadering van de personages en de ruimte in Grands travaux inderdaad anders.

Bij Rain sta je als kijker meer op een afstand, je blijft vooral in de rol van observator. Er zijn wel een

aantal elementen die het materiaal structureren, zoals de jonge balletdanseres Léonore Baulac, de repetities of het operagebouw, maar de observatie in Grands travaux is helderder.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Bij Rain hebben we echt onze tanden stukgebeten op de repetities. We moesten allerlei kunstgrepen toepassen om ze in beeld te brengen, waarbij we achterhoofden en handen filmden… Die strategie is niet beter of slechter dan een andere, maar ik vroeg me wel af waarom we het nu zo moeilijk hadden om bepaalde dingen onbeschroomd te filmen. In Grands travaux wilden we wat er zich afspeelde voor de camera op een meer directe manier weergeven. Die meer directe vorm is nog steeds gekunsteld, maar ik denk wel dat enkele scènes slagen in een meer eenvoudige opzet. Deze aanpak heeft zich ook doorgezet in de klank, die minder sturend en minder uitbundig aanwezig is dan in onze eerdere films.

Olivia Rochette

De klank is nog steeds belangrijk, maar sommige dingen waren, net zoals in de montage, niet mogelijk.

Ditmaal verdroegen de beelden geen asynchrone klank, klank die van de ene in de andere scène doorloopt.

Grands travaux gaat veel meer over ruimtelijkheid. Met de klank hebben we, in samenwerking met klankmixer Thomas Gauder en klankmonteuses Ingrid Simon en Sabrina Calmels, geprobeerd de ruimtes precies en direct te definiëren. Zo hebben we ook proberen te filmen: hoe ga je die ruimtes definiëren, decouperen, construeren?

Gerard-Jan Claes

Ik vind het erg sterk wanneer directheid en helderheid een filosofische lading krijgen, zoals in de films van Nicolas Philibert of Abbas Kiarostami. Hun werk is echt ongelooflijk. Kiarostami hanteert steeds een

klassieke fictiestrategie, maar toch gaat het ook altijd over de ontdubbeling van fictie en documentaire. Zo vertelt zijn Waar is het huis van mijn vriend? [Khane-ye doust kodjast?, 1987] het verhaal van een jongetje dat het huis van een vriend zoekt en onderweg verloren loopt. Dat is zo eenvoudig in zijn opzet, maar door de helderheid waarmee het is opgebouwd en Kiarostami’s zorg voor de vorm lijkt de film ook over meer te gaan, onder andere over cinema zelf en over hoe we naar de werkelijkheid kijken of hebben leren kijken.

De manier waarop cinema en werkelijkheid zich tot elkaar verhouden zit steeds in jullie werk. Het is ook een terugkerend thema in de publicaties van de cinefiele website Sabzian, die jullie mee oprichtten.

De oprichting van Sabzian is verbonden aan een zoektocht naar een theoretisch kader rond film dat we pas na onze opleiding aan KASK – School of Arts gingen verkennen. Ik heb de indruk dat we anders, niet per se beter of slechter, naar film kijken dan toen we Because We Are Visual maakten. Zo ontdekten we onder meer het werk van Johan van der Keuken, Pedro Costa, Wang Bing… Zij maken niet enkel ongelooflijk mooi werk waarbij de verhouding tussen cinema en de wereld een cruciale rol speelt, ze kunnen ook erg helder en met filosofisch inzicht over hun werk spreken. Maar sommige stemmen in die zoektocht, zoals Pedro Costa, kunnen soms behoorlijk verlammend werken. Wat moet je als jonge filmmaker beginnen als Costa tijdens een Q&A op Courtisane bijvoorbeeld vertelt dat er tegenwoordig geen tafels of keukens meer gefilmd kunnen worden?

Dat je geen film meer kunt maken over de zee omdat die artistiek uitgeteld is? Als je door die optiek beklemd raakt, wordt het moeilijk om nog ongedwongen te filmen…

Een meer theoretische reflectie over film is van belang, maar ze kan filmmakers en hun films soms blokkeren.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Theorie is erg belangrijk, al is het maar om vastgeroeste vormen te begrijpen, te ontmaskeren en je eigen valkuilen beter te begrijpen. Vanuit die gedachte is Sabzian er ook gekomen. De website is opgericht door een groep filmmakers die allen ergens een theoretische honger hebben of de noodzaak voelen om bepaalde vormen onder woorden te brengen. Ik merk dat Sabzian, de filmprogramma’s die we met ZÊro de conduite organiseren en ook onze films allemaal iets didactisch hebben.

Zowel voor onszelf als voor kijkers en lezers. Ze vertrekken allemaal vanuit een verlangen om na te denken over wat cinema zou kunnen zijn en drukken uit hoezeer cinema noodzakelijk is voor onze verhouding tot de wereld en hoe we ernaar kijken.

Didactisch is niet bepaald een modewoord tegenwoordig.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Al die zaken zijn didactisch in die zin dat we proberen mensen op een andere manier naar de wereld te laten kijken. We geloven dat cinema die blik mee kan vormen.

Olivia Rochette

Ondanks dat theoretische kader of didactische programma blijft een bepaalde naĂŻviteit overeind, zeker tijdens het filmen zelf. Veel zaken klinken erg theoretisch, maar hebben niet meteen een rechtstreekse vertaling in ons eigen werk.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Cinema is de kunst van het concrete. Dat verklaart misschien ook waarom het in onze tijd zo moeilijk geworden is om tot een beeld te komen: onze cultuur

verkeert in een chronische crisis van het concrete.

Het ‘concrete’ is vandaag de dag al zodanig geabstraheerd dat het onmogelijk is om de essentieel cinematografische kunstgreep uit te voeren: concretiseren. Dat is iets waar we als filmmakers en binnen Sabzian erg mee bezig zijn.

We willen films maken die geen handleiding nodig hebben, die voor zichzelf spreken en die je eigenlijk tijdens de film niet doen denken maar die zijn. Dit moet altijd voorop staan.

Tegenover die ‘crisis van het concrete’ plaatsen jullie een belangstelling voor de jongens zelf, hun handelingen en hun woorden. Een eventuele symbolische lezing staat op het tweede plan.

Olivia Rochette

Dit is misschien wel de kern van onze film: we kijken geconcentreerd naar hoe iemand beweegt en spreekt. In de alledaagse gesprekken tussen de jongens vinden we de directheid die we graag wilden hebben.

Vele films beschouwen zulke conversaties tussen jongeren als een korte illustratie van hoe ‘mensen als zij’ praten, of toch hoe wij als makers en publiek verwachten dat ze praten. Wij laten dat gesprek echter helemaal doorlopen.

Onze concentratie, maar ook die van hen, zorgt ervoor dat we hun handelingen echt kunnen zien en hun woorden echt kunnen horen.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Als filmmakers hebben we de ambitie om met gepast geduld naar concrete, kleine handelingen te kijken.

Daarbij zijn we er niet op uit om de gestes van onze personages meteen in een universele symboliek in te passen. Wel gaat het er ons om een beeld te creëren waarin wij, met de werkmiddelen die we als filmmakers tot onze beschikking hebben, laten zien hoe deze jongens in de wereld staan en er zich toe verhouden.

DE VERWACHTE FILM

(…) hoe zou een hedendaagse film over de banlieue eruit kunnen zien en wie zou de hoofdrol spelen? Waarmee zou men de dialogen voeden? Ik zou die film heel graag zien en ik zou graag hebben dat men het beschouwt als een haast onontbeerlijk werk om hem te maken. Dat gezegd zijnde, ligt het toch niet voor de hand, want er zijn duistere vooruitzichten die de fictie blokkeren. (…) We moeten die film maken, want we hebben hem nog nooit gezien.

Jullie besteden aandacht aan de dagelijkse beslommeringen van de jongens. Hun toekomst krijgt vorm voor de ogen van de kijker. Tegelijkertijd heerst er bij heel wat zogenaamde opiniemakers en reaguurders een gebetonneerde blik op deze jongens en de plek waar ze opgroeien.

Anneessens-Funck heeft de reputatie van een ‘moeilijke’ school. Aan de school kleeft een maatschappelijk stigma waardoor het risico bestaat

dat die jongens enkel bekeken kunnen worden als een probleem. Na de aanslagen in Parijs en Brussel merkten we dat mensen bepaalde verwachtingen gingen koesteren bij een film gedraaid in Anneessens-Funck.

Olivia Rochette

Over Grands travaux horen we nu vaak zeggen dat het wel interessant is om in deze tijden een film te maken over net die jongeren. Soms lijkt het dan alsof zij tot een andere wereld behoren, waar wij dan als filmmakers even hebben vertoefd.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Brusselse jongeren zijn regelmatig het onderwerp van reportages of documentaires, en dan vaak in negatieve zin. Het gevaar ontstaat dat ze enkel opgerakeld worden om thema’s zoals geweld, leerachterstand, werkloosheid en armoede te illustreren. Brussel heeft natuurlijk ernstige problemen, maar hen uitsluitend als illustratie daarvan opvoeren is erg determinerend.

Zo worden ze gereduceerd tot een bekend beeld, een sjabloon bijna, dat telkens wordt gereproduceerd.

Media zijn vaak enkel in deze jongeren geïnteresseerd vanuit urgentie of sensationalisme. Dat alles weerspiegelt zich ook in sommige verwachtingspatronen omtrent onze film. Via gesprekken met leerkrachten, sociaal werkers of anderen merkten we dat er al een verwachte film bestond, alsof dit onderwerp of deze ruimte automatisch een bijbehorende vorm genereert.

Al bestaat er in documentaire cinema ook zoiets als het cliché van het tegenbeeld, waarbij films gevangenzitten in een aan zichzelf opgelegde verplichting om het bestaande beeld van mainstreammedia te ‘corrigeren’.

En dat terwijl ze fundamenteel geen andere manier van kijken voorstellen.

Inderdaad, dergelijke tegenbeelden zijn vaak even problematisch. Het ene beeld heeft het andere nodig om in stand te worden gehouden. Wanneer je volledig meegaat in de dynamiek van een slechts schijnbaar alternatieve beeldvorming, draag je feitelijk bij aan een status-quo in de verbeelding. We willen vermijden dat een bepaalde esthetiek aan een bepaald onderwerp vastgehaakt wordt. Als een thematiek je tot een bepaalde vorm dwingt, zit je dan niet veel meer in het straatje van de verwachte film?

Toch zullen die verwachtingen op een of andere manier wegen op Grands travaux, onder meer omdat Bilal Hadfi, een van de daders van de aanslagen in Parijs op 13 november 2015, nog les volgde op Anneessens-Funck.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Na de aanslagen in Parijs en Brussel ontstond er meer interesse voor onze film. Zo vroegen televisiezenders ons om bijdragen te leveren aan actualiteitsprogramma’s. Wij dachten dan vaak: als het vandaag interessant is, dan was het ook gisteren interessant. Voor ons heeft de Brusselse problematiek te maken met een groot litteken dat al jarenlang in stand wordt gehouden.

Onze film is geen antwoord op iets dat die actualiteitsprogramma’s verwachten, we beweren niet het geheel geanalyseerd te hebben. Dat AnneessensFunck meegesleurd werd in de mediastorm rond de aanslagen in Parijs, verandert daar eigenlijk weinig aan.

En veranderde weinig aan de jongens die we filmden, behalve aan het beeld dat van buitenaf op hen werd geplakt. Onze film maakt geen rapport op van deze school of van zijn leerlingen. Al maakt het wel deel uit van de ruimte van Grands travaux en van het gelimiteerde toekomstperspectief dat vaak voor de jongens openligt.

De verwachte film

Na de aanslagen in Parijs en Brussel leken bepaalde ideeën zich aan de film op te dringen, maar die waren totaal niet de inzet van onze film. We verzamelen geen bewijsmateriaal voor een vooraf opgestelde these.

Documentaire cinema gaat de confrontatie aan met de werkelijkheid. Daarbij botsen de verwachtingen die je ook als filmmaker onvermijdelijk hebt met de concrete wereld waarin je aan de slag gaat. Het gaat er niet om die verwachtingen te ontkennen, maar wel toe te staan dat je die via film contextualiseert of verwerpt.

Het blijft opmerkelijk dat bij documentaire cinema zo sterk het idee leeft van de ‘verwachte film’.

Als je een film maakt over een school als AnneessensFunck, moeten er bepaalde onderwerpen aan bod komen.

Kun je dan geen documentaire maken over een school en…

Olivia Rochette

… het enkel over de tegels hebben…

Gerard-Jan Claes

Dat kan ook een ontzettend mooie film opleveren. Maar bij documentaire lijkt altijd de verwachting te ontstaan dat je een problematiek moet aanpakken.

Zo voelden we bij Rain bijvoorbeeld al op voorhand dat we het hiërarchische systeem van de Opéra aan bod moesten laten komen, zelfs moesten ontwrichten.

En andere mensen wilden een klassieke ‘achter de schermen’-documentaire zien. Ergens verwijst Rain, door zijn structuur, ook wel naar die verwachte film. Tijdens een lezing die Pedro Costa ooit gaf in Tokio sprak hij over die verwachtingen en verwoordde hij erg mooi waar het dan wel over ging. Volgens hem bestaat films maken in de eerste plaats uit het plezier van aan films te werken.

Het plezier van films maken zit in het maken zelf, niet in het tonen van een problematiek. De voornaamste reden om een film te maken is het plezier hem te maken, het plezier van het werk. Als er geen plezier zit in het werk, is er niets. Wat zou dan het belangrijkste kenmerk van een documentaire zijn? Dat is zien dat de maker in de eerste plaats zijn job goed heeft gedaan, dat hij ergens heen is gegaan en erop heeft gewerkt. Een film is altijd een documentaire van zijn eigen maakproces. Elke film van Ozu of Mizoguchi gaat vooral over ambachtslui, over het plezier van het werken, de arbeid, dat werk een goede zaak is en dat goed uitgevoerd werk mooi is. Het zegt alles en dat is goed genoeg voor een film. Werk goed uitgevoerd zien is belangrijker dan het thema van de film. In het plezier en de arbeid die ik deelde met anderen bij het maken van Ossos [Pedro Costa, 1997] was het bijvoorbeeld mijn taak om ten eerste een interessante en goed gemaakte film te creëren en ten tweede deze film te maken met mensen die niets afwisten van cinema. Dat verlangen heeft geleid tot een film die hopelijk moreel en cinematografisch interessant is. En niet omdat de film over ellende of lijden gaat, maar omdat hij geconstrueerd is op een manier die ik heel eerlijk, correct, acht.

Je komt ook snel in een dynamiek terecht waarbij je denkt iemands proces te moeten maken, of het nu van die jongens is, van leerkrachten of van het onderwijs in het algemeen. Maar dat wilden we absoluut niet doen.

Ik heb echt een hekel aan ideeënfilms. Voor mij moet een film altijd vertrekken vanuit een materialiteit. En dat was misschien wel de moeilijkste vraag bij Grands travaux: wat is nu het materiaal van onze film?

We zijn vertrokken vanuit deze specifieke jongens – Barry, Mamadou, Abdi en Achmed – en wat hun

dagelijkse leven structureert: voetbal, meisjes of school, werk zoeken en alleen gaan wonen‌ Dat vonden we mooi aan hen en daar wilden we iets mee doen.

Grands travaux gaat aan de slag met kleine dingen die wij erg belangrijk vinden.

Daarbij valt ook op dat jullie niet het al eerder vermelde vogelperspectief innemen of inzetten op standpunten van allerlei experts in onderwijs en sociale zaken. Jullie filmen vanuit de intieme levenssfeer van de jongens.

We wilden een intimiteit vinden met de jongens.

Die krijg je niet alleen door de wijze waarop je filmt, maar ook doordat ze ons na een tijdje toelieten in hun leefwereld.

Olivia Rochette

De vorm die de film krijgt, wordt mee gestuurd door de jongeren zelf. Grands travaux focust op alledaagse handelingen uit het leven van individuele leerlingen.

Momenten als deze worden meestal weggelaten uit films vanuit de behoefte om zich toe te spitsen op conflicten of de ontwikkeling van een verhaallijn. Daarbij denk ik opnieuw aan Johan van der Keuken, voor wie een film bestaat uit beelden gefilmd tijdens je contact met de werkelijkheid en niet vanuit wat je er vooraf al over dacht.

Er is nog een punt: de conventionele verteltrant gaat van de gedachte uit dat je de werkelijkheid die je beschrijft van tevoren al kende; dat je ook de personages die je in de film laat zien kende. Voor mij, en voor een aantal anderen, is het net andersom: ik ga juist uit van het gevoel dat ik niets ken en uiteindelijk zijn de gefilmde beelden het enige wat je als kenbare werkelijkheid overhoudt. Het zijn momenten van contact, van kennis, de enige die je hebt overgehouden van de wereld waar je je in hebt begeven. Mijn films bestaan over het algemeen niet uit beelden die deel

Grands travaux uitmaken van een reeds bestaand geheel, maar het zijn momenten waaruit de kijker voor zichzelf een beeld kan samenstellen. Dat beeld wordt dus gevormd in twee fasen, het filmen/monteren en het waarnemen van de film door de kijker. Het is dus een uitwisseling, een tweerichtingsverkeer. Voor mij is het een belangrijk punt, dat de informatie die er in een film zit ook het enige is dat je weet.

Het idee van het topje van de ijsberg dus – maar met dien verstande dat alleen het deel boven water (in de film) bestaat, omdat je niets weet van wat er onder water zit en je de totale ijsberg dus ook niet kan beschrijven. Zo worden bijvoorbeeld in De nieuwe ijstijd [Johan van der Keuken, 1974] de personages niet ‘in hun geheel’ beschreven, maar wat er getoond wordt is slechts datgene wat wij bij het filmen zijn tegengekomen, het is altijd een beperkte, fragmentarische kennis van alles wat er bestaat en zo wordt het ook getoond.

Wanneer ik een film maak, bevind ik me altijd in de realiteit. Ik ben tussen de bomen en onder mensen zoals jij. Er is geen symbolische of op conventies steunende filter tussen de realiteit en mij, zoals wel het geval is in literatuur.

Cinema is een explosie van mijn liefde voor de realiteit.

De drie films die jullie tot nu toe maakten, spelen zich telkens af in ruimtes die jullie erg vertrouwd zijn. Er was de virtuele realiteit in Because We Are Visual, die overigens in Grands travaux opnieuw een rol speelt. Rain gaat deels over hoe de wereld van het klassieke ballet zich verhoudt tot de wereld van de hedendaagse dans, die jullie goed kennen vanuit jullie werk voor Rosas.

En met Grands travaux richten jullie de blik naar Brussel.

Ik ging er altijd van uit dat exotisme een verkeerd vertrekpunt was voor een film, maar ik begin steeds meer te denken dat exotisme deel uitmaakt van een

spanningsveld inherent aan elke film. Er duiken steeds bepaalde ‘problemen’ op die je gewoon niet sluitend kunt oplossen. Zo zullen we altijd buitenstaanders blijven in Anneessens-Funck, maar dat is slechts een ‘probleem’ als dat zich vertaalt als een probleem in je film.

Deel van de spanning die cinema interessant maakt, is net dat je het privilege hebt om een buitenstaander te zijn. Het eerste filmprogramma dat we met Zéro de conduite samenstelden, heette ‘To the Distant Observer’, naar een gelijknamig boek van Noël Burch over Japanse cinema. Die titel vormt de kern van wat cinema is.

Als filmmaker moet je de juiste afstand proberen te vinden en inzetten in je werk.

Wat wij als makers wel willen, is hier een film maken. Je moet niet per se verre oorden opzoeken.

Bij het programma over Portugese cinema dat recent in CINEMATEK te zien was, las ik een mooi citaat van Manoel de Oliveira over zijn verhouding tot de stad Porto: “Porto, dat is mijn territorium, elders zou ik een toeschouwer zijn.”

Begin jaren negentig beschreef de Franse criticus Serge Daney de connectie tussen cinema en de nabije wereld via de metafoor van een draad die liep van zijn appartement in Parijs naar de cinema’s waar hij films ging bekijken. Hij betreurde het dat de jongeren die op dat moment in de banlieue woonden deze draad moesten missen omdat er een gebrek aan verbeelding bestond, waardoor hun wereld niet op de bioscoopschermen terechtkwam. En dat terwijl veel van de cinema’s in Parijs ook al verdwenen waren. Voor de cinefiel Daney liep er dus een draad van de ene naar de andere wereld, of van de wereld naar de wereld-in-de-wereld.

De recente uitgaven van Daneys teksten maken ook deel uit van onze theoretische zoektocht. Bij hem vinden we inderdaad de nadruk op cinema die een

hedendaagse realiteit tracht te verbeelden. Het is belangrijk om vormen te vinden om over onze wereld te kunnen nadenken. Als filmmaker heb je ook een rechtstreekse verantwoordelijkheid. Maar de wereld is erg dichtgemetseld. Het is moeilijk om echt naar deze wereld en haar dingen te kijken en er de tijd voor te nemen. We worden voortdurend platgeslagen door andere beelden. Anne Teresa [De Keersmaeker] sprak in een interview over een verwante gedachte: “Het enige wat een kunstwerk van vandaag kan, is een verlangen naar een andere stand van zaken in de wereld formuleren.” Daarin ligt misschien het filosofische opzet van cinema in mijn ogen: de huidige stand van zaken minder evident maken.

Dat is ook wat de Franse filosoof Jacques Rancière benadrukt wanneer hij in zijn boek De geëmancipeerde toeschouwer schrijft over beelden die een nieuw landschap van het mogelijke helpen creëren: “De beelden van de kunst leveren geen wapens voor de strijd. Ze dragen bij tot het ontwerpen van nieuwe configuraties van het zichtbare, zegbare en denkbare, en daarmee van een nieuw landschap van het mogelijke.”

Je zou Grands travaux kunnen beschouwen als een poging tot cartografie van de beroepsschool AnneessensFunck. We brengen al de verschillende ruimtes in kaart van een plek waar de Brusselse verbrokkeling convergeert. Net als bij Because We Are Visual en Rain is de opbouw van Grands travaux sterk verbonden aan een spanningsveld tussen binnen en buiten, tussen private en openbare ruimte, tussen donker en licht… In se gaat Grands travaux over hoe we in film nieuwe ruimtes kunnen creëren. De film is een vloeiende geografie, een beweging door de veelvormige leefruimtes van de jongeren.

Ook Daney bekeek film in termen van een landschap.

Zo verbond hij zijn cinefiele blik aan de prentbriefkaarten die hij stuurde tijdens zijn reizen over de hele wereld. De beelden daarvan zijn bij uitstek zeer bekend, maar Daneys persoonlijke ervaring en zijn eigen blik gaven daar een andere invulling aan. Hij wentelde zich in een zeker exotisme, dat echter steeds verbonden was aan zijn thuis, de cinema. Beeldcultuur verhoudt zich dus voortdurend tot dominante, overbekende beelden.

Het is belangrijk om te blijven kijken naar dingen rondom ons die we misschien niet meer zien omdat we er te veel naar hebben gekeken. Omdat we erop uitgekeken zijn.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Daarom vind ik het zo treffend dat de films van Nicolas Philibert geproduceerd worden door een productiehuis dat Les films d’ici heet. Al speelt dan ook omgekeerd weer een valse romantiek. We vonden het, toch voor Grands travaux, belangrijk om hier in Brussel te filmen, in een werkelijkheid die wij kennen. Film is altijd een investering in de werkelijkheid, het staat er nooit los van. Je voegt ook een stukje werkelijkheid toe.

Zo hebben de broers Dardenne van Seraing een filmische ruimte gemaakt. Zij kunnen echt ruimtes vullen. Bij hen ontstaan wel tafels, stoelen en keukens.

Als een jonge filmmaker kun je je er niet bij neerleggen dat het onmogelijk is om, zoals Costa aangeeft, nog een keuken te filmen.

Olivia Rochette

Costa geeft ook aan dat plezier in het werk de kern is van films maken. En niet zozeer het verfilmen van een prangend actueel vraagstuk. Het is echt een uitdaging om ergens te filmen waar al niet op voorhand

een problematiek aan vastkleeft. Ik zou echt heel graag een film kunnen maken over iemand die naar zijn werk gaat, zonder die persoon te beladen met een thematiek, maar hem of haar daarbij wel deel te laten worden van onze documentaire attitude. Dat is volgens mij het allermoeilijkste.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Daarnaast willen we hedendaagse films maken.

Enerzijds zie je dat veel cinema die over onze huidige wereld spreekt in zichzelf opgesloten blijft, zonder dat er een terugkoppeling is naar de werkelijkheid. Anderzijds kun je je als filmmaker afvragen of je dan veroordeeld bent te werken als Pedro Costa of Wang Bing, hoe geniaal en virtuoos zij dat ook doen. Dit is iets, denk ik, waar veel filmmakers mee worstelen. Zij zijn voor ons misschien wel de belangrijkste filmmakers van vandaag, maar ze verbeelden een wereld en een tijd die ik niet ken en waar ik niet toe behoor. Deze plekken bestaan natuurlijk wel in onze tijd, maar net doordat ze in verval zijn, bezitten ze een materialiteit die in de wereld hier lijkt te ontbreken. Om een glad oppervlak te filmen heb je een andere aanpak nodig dan bij gebarsten muren.

Daney benadrukte dan wel dat film de kunst van het hedendaagse is, in de jaren vlak voor zijn dood [in 1992] besefte hij ook dat de cinefilie zoals hij die had beleefd een aura van nostalgische romantiek had gekregen.

De invloed van televisie was volgens hem nefast.

Tegenwoordig moeten filmmakers bovendien rekening houden met internet en een overvloed aan kleine beeldschermen.

Daarom trekt Spring Breakers [Harmony Korine, 2012] ons wel aan. Dat is ook de wereld van vandaag en die doet er ook toe. Ik denk dat die fascinatie voor de huidige wereld en haar vormen het vertrekpunt was

voor Because We Are Visual. Maar ook dan is het aspect van een ontdekkingsreis altijd aanwezig: je wilt iets leren kennen dat je nog niet kent en de film lijkt daar een geschikt middel toe. Al lijkt het wel alsof films over de hedendaagse jeugd steeds een carnavalesk bacchanaal moeten worden, zoals Spring Breakers of The Bling Ring [Sofia Coppola, 2013]. Je kunt blijkbaar niet gewoon een filmische ruimte scheppen met daarin een meisje uit de welgestelde middenklasse dat een beetje worstelt met school en haar liefje.

Als het over de ‘hedendaagse tijd’ gaat, worden we steeds om de oren geslagen met een bepaalde moraliteit, iets dat in Spring Breakers intrigerend genoeg afwezig is.

Daarnaast fascineert het me dat sommige muzikanten, Kanye West bijvoorbeeld, zo goed met onze tijd kunnen omgaan. Zij vertalen die op zo’n directe manier. Al bevat hun werk weinig echte frictie en ontwricht het niets.

Spring Breakers hanteert een heel ander register dan de loden ernst die we wel vaker zien in filmische beschouwingen over ‘onze tijd’.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Iemand zoals Michael Haneke is een hedendaagse filmmaker die met beide voeten in deze wereld probeert te staan. Maar soms weet ik niet wat ik van zijn werk moet denken. Een film als Code inconnu [Code inconnu. Récit incomplet de divers voyages, 2000] bevalt me echt, terwijl de inhoud, de boodschap zeg maar, daarin wel erg doorweegt. Haneke knoopt steeds een morele les aan zijn films. Ze gaan over thema’s als Grootstedelijk Leven, Voyeurisme… Het is dan ook moeilijk om eenvoudige verhalen te vertellen die zich vandaag afspelen en die niet blijven hangen in het verfilmen van ideeën. Als je kijkt naar Amour [Michael Haneke, 2012], besef je hoe weinig gewone, oprechte liefdesverhalen over oudere mensen we te zien krijgen zonder dat er een boodschap aan vastgehaakt moet worden.

Ook de broers Dardenne hebben altijd die ethische motor nodig. Al zit er in hun films eveneens een grote na誰viteit. Toch worden hun films steeds voortgestuwd door een moraliteit, met een soort katholiek schuldgevoel aan de basis, waarbij ze zich afvragen hoe we vandaag met de Ander omgaan. Dat is misschien wat overdreven gesteld, maar sommige films krijgen bijna het statuut van een Bijbelse parabel. Er zit steeds een soort queeste in.

Hoewel de aandacht bij critici en publiek vaak uitgaat naar hun morele vertellingen, is ook voor de gebroeders Dardenne vorm cruciaal.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Als je naar hun werk kijkt, doet het er bijvoorbeeld echt toe welke kleur een muur heeft. Dat is natuurlijk bij elke film van belang, maar toch zie ik het zo weinig dat zulke concrete elementen een wezenlijke rol spelen. De manier waarop de broers Dardenne hun films richten, laat je als kijker voelen dat de groene muren in Le fils [2002] er werkelijk toe doen.

Of in hun Deux jours, une nuit [2014], wanneer het personage van Marion Cotillard praat met een collega [gespeeld door Christelle Cornil] voor een gevel in rode baksteen.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Ja, of het donkerblauw van de nachtwinkel in die film. Voor mij heeft dat ook veel te maken met hoe je in de werkelijkheid staat, met wat je belangrijk vindt in die werkelijkheid en hoe die geordend is. Wanneer het personage van Marion Cotillard in Deux jours, une nuit die nachtwinkel binnengaat, staan er achteraan blauwe bakken opgesteld. Op het moment dat een collega van haar die bijklust in deze winkel voorbijkomt met oranje wortels en het groene loof, liggen die wortels daar tegen

de blauwe achtergrond als Een bundel asperges [La botte d’asperges, 1880] van Manet. Door die vorm zie je iets opdoemen. Het bestaat dan echt op het scherm, zoals Costa zou zeggen. En dat vind ik ontzettend mooi.

Spaces have multiplied, been broken up and have diversified. There are spaces today of every kind and every size, for every use and every function. To live is to pass from one space to another, while doing your very best not to bump yourself.

Your film is largely set in the vocational school Anneessens-Funck in the heart of Brussels. Rightly or wrongly, both the school and the city call up all sorts of associations. Where did Grands travaux start for you?

Gerard-Jan Claes

Very early on, we already thought of the title Grands travaux. Various associations became attached to it, even though not all of them explicitly ended up in the film. We saw a lot of those ideas converging in Anneessens-Funck, the school where Grands travaux mainly takes place. Firstly, the title refers to the major

construction works that were carried out in Brussels in the fifties and sixties, which turned the entire city into a building site. Closely related to this, there’s the contrast between the plans that shape a city from a bird’s-eye view and the way these plans are eventually realized in public space. These interventions have become the symbol of the problems that characterize Brussels up to this very day.

As Rudi Laermans points out in his book Ruimten van cultuur [‘Spaces of Culture’, 2001], these post-war ‘great works’ [grands travaux] ushered in an urban catastrophe that has weighed heavily on the city’s political lethargy.

Brussels has become a very fragmented city. We see it all around us every day. I grew up in Brussels and have always experienced the city as a place in a perpetual state of demolition and construction. This city is looking for its form, and struggles in appropriating an image.

An image, a phantasm has dominated the postwar history of this city, but in an imperfect manner.

Modernizing has become a permanent condition in Brussels: demolition, building boom, destruction, and pouring concrete. Incessant dilapidation over here, renovations over there: this city dies continually, but always in other places, so they too can be done up permanently, renewed, restored. In short, Brussels is a verb, but hardly anyone still knows why the ‘Grands travaux’ once started and continue to this very day.

There’s this lovely reportage by RTBF [the Frenchlanguage national broadcaster] from 1966 that talks about the impact of these construction works and already advocates a more human modernism. At the beginning of the reportage, the journalist stands amid what appears to be a ruin while he describes the on-going activities.

Even then, Brussels was a city where construction and demolition could go on undisturbed, without considering

the consequences. Because of that, Brussels lives in a permanent state of change. As film-makers, we are very much attracted to that elusive multiplicity.

Here, we’re not standing among the ruins of a city that was destroyed by a bombing, an earthquake or a rebellion. (...) We are not in Vietnam or in Leuven. We’re just standing in the center of Brussels. As you can see, it’s not always necessary to travel far to witness certain destructions. (...) Recently, some foreigners told me: Brussels is truly amazing. Anywhere you go, people are building. And everywhere at the same time.

Still, your film doesn’t focus on the Brussels of city developers. It’s mainly interested in the spaces inhabited by the youngsters, especially their school.

Olivia Rochette

We really liked the link between the work the boys do at school and the construction work that goes on in Brussels. Just about everything in our film deals with the theme of ‘work’. That basic concept can be read in many different ways. The ‘travaux’ [‘works’] of the title refers, among other things, to the boys’ vocational training. They are required to carry out a number of ‘small works’. They have to install bedroom or bathroom electrical wiring, place an intercom or draw the circuit diagram for a new home. They also receive job interview training that prepares them for advertising their services on the labour market.

School is a place where they work on their future, according to an imposed plan, similar to the ‘grands travaux’, which were intended to shape the future of Brussels. For us, Grands travaux is about how these boys try to organize their life in Brussels.

Work is a necessity of life, and determines how you experience the world. At the same time, work is structurally required to keep our capitalist society on track. In that respect, work also has a useless side to it. You just know that the construction works in Brussels mainly served to support the emerging Belgian welfare state. It didn’t matter what was done, as long as people worked.

Work is always on the agenda, but strangely enough it remains absent from most films. Except with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for example.

Their characters always have to relate to a world that is also socio-economically determined, often in relation to labour.

One of the big wishes of the human kind is to transform things, to work on things to construct, to destroy, to sometimes construct again. And not only to look at the world, let’s say, passively. I think that’s the aim of humankind, being a man, a woman, is to change things.

And cinema is about showing things that are changing.

Finally, the ‘travaux’ in the title not only refers to the daily activities of young people, but also to the inevitable structuring aspect of filmmaking. For us, a film is always a construction. The building blocks have to fit together, otherwise the whole film falls flat and lacks movement or tension. The search for a working method was absolutely crucial to this film.

Grands travaux then also is a way of exploring the very nature of your work as filmmakers.

In many ways, Grands travaux feels as if it were our first film. In 2010, we graduated with Because We Are Visual. For that film, we didn’t have to leave our room because all of the material came from YouTube, which is an inexhaustible source. We had to find the form of the film during the editing process.

Olivia Rochette

Then we made Rain, a film commissioned by Rosas in which both the framework we worked in and the relation to the people we filmed had been stipulated in our contract. In some respects, Rain was a more fixed film than Because We Are Visual. The Opéra national in

Paris receives film crews all the time and specifies the locations and subject matter filmmakers are allowed to shoot. The ballet dancers we followed while they were rehearsing a choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker are used to being filmed. Moreover, it was stated in advance that we had to make a film that ran from the auditions to the premiere of the performance.

Nevertheless, we had a lot of freedom within this very strict framework. But with Grands travaux, there was no framework, everything was open.

Grands travaux felt as a next step, both aesthetically and practically. Once we had made the choice to make a film at Anneessens-Funck, we needed a bit of time to find the right track. When we started filming at Anneessens-Funck, the pupils’ reaction were often quite strong. They asked us – and rightfully so – why we had chosen that specific school and what we would be doing there exactly. Initially, we had trouble answering these pointed questions.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Our search also had a technical side to it.

We had filmed Rain with a camera that was available to the production. For Grands travaux, we wanted a certain type of camera, since ultimately a camera dictates the way you look at things. We had to take into account our financial constraints – many professional cameras are simply too expensive for a long shoot. The affordable, semi-professional cameras we work with have several sensors, and since we couldn’t set up a lot of lights, the sensor size of the camera was crucial for the image we ended up with. In combination with certain lenses, each 35mm, 16mm, two-thirds, three-thirds or full-frame sensor offers a unique result. Many modern cameras have a very large sensor (35mm or full frame). There’s a certain aesthetic linked to this, in which you focus sharply on a very little detail while the rest of the image remains blurry.

Looking for forms

Toying around with that limited depth of field often proves to be a rather clichéd approach to cinematic space.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Indeed, but for Grands travaux we wanted to have clarity and brightness in the image. We were looking for a camera that would create beautiful images in any lighting condition, without the blur dominating the image.

Olivia Rochette

We wanted the images to gradually soften into the background, like with 16mm.

Gerard-Jan Claes

The blur of 35mm creates an instant abstraction and makes you isolate certain details in the image.

It often appears to me that whatever is vague in the image somehow doesn’t seem to matter. We, on the other hand, think it’s beautiful when the background is of equal import. It enhances your understanding of how a character relates to the space.

Olivia Rochette

We tested several cameras, including a 16mm celluloid camera. But we quickly came to the conclusion that we wanted to shoot digitally. Nowadays, 16mm film gets you a certain artistic capital, a false richness in your image. But then you really have to pinpoint why exactly you choose to work with 16mm film. It gives the image itself a fetish value. Our film is about boys going to school in Brussels in this day and age. We think 16mm film refers to another time.

Eventually, we opted for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, which has the size and the price of a smartphone. It’s a very good device given its price, but in the future we would like to work with a better camera.

With a cheap digital camera, there’s always this sense that you have to engage in a battle with the machine.

You have chosen to work with static camera setups.

Olivia Rochette

In a way, we didn’t ‘chose’ that. We always work with a fixed frame. Grands travaux consists almost exclusively of medium shots. The 25mm lens we acquired for this film continuously influenced our distance to the subjects we were filming. We are very pleased with this lens. The choice to work with a camera on a tripod and with a fixed lens imposes certain restrictions.

In documentary filmmaking, you always miss things, or you are late to film a situation. And with a tripod and a fixed lens you actually miss almost everything. You can’t zoom instantly to capture something, you need to physically move yourself and prepare your camera.

That’s the opposite of ‘point and shoot’, but it wasn’t our intention to capture everything anyway. The choice in equipment forces you to think about the frame, about how you want to depict something. You have to choose a position. The choice of a particular camera is simultaneously limiting and liberating, since a considerable amount of the multiple options available have already been eliminated for you.

Many scenes in your film have a classic quality, for example with the medium shots, or waist shots, of the characters.

We have filmed with classic camera setups and at eye-level. It may look simple, but it was very hard to find the right image. A lot of our footage was useless to us, because it was just a little too close or too wide, or because the light wasn’t good... Many scenes contain material from several days of shooting, so nearly every

scene had to be build up step by step during the shoot.

We have put a lot of thought into how we would shoot, even though the film itself doesn’t testify to that. There was a very thin line between usable and unusable images.

Gerard-Jan Claes

After a while, this classic découpage led us to a form of ‘simulation’. We re-staged short scenes, for example in the shot/reverse shot in which two boys discuss fc Barcelona and Real Madrid. The shot/reverse shot is one of the basic building blocks of cinema, and to me it has something of a mature form. Incorporating the boys in that form makes them part of a beautiful game. Many daily activities at the school already had this aspect of simulation or playing too. We saw that in their job interview training, in their classroom presentations but also in their practical assignments. Each pupil has a small wooden cabin in which he works and makes his assignments. Those wooden cabins became like sets where the boys played themselves.

Without us having to explain it to them, even if we could have done so, Barry, Mamadou, Achmed and Abdi understood very well what we were looking for.

As the shooting progressed, they, as well as we, got a better grasp of which tone and rhythm would work well.

Encountering these particular boys lifted the whole film.

They really had something special and were very open.

This also had to do with their age. Some of the older pupils were tougher to interact with.

Grands travaux plays with a particular mise-enscène, but its starting point remains observation, I think.

We don’t try to find a form dictated by a certain idea, but start off with actual people and actual places. We always work within documentary cinema. The distinction

between documentary and fiction is often regarded as redundant. Dutch documentary filmmaker Johan van der Keuken once said: “Light on a screen is always fiction.”

But for us, there is still a difference between of them – documentary cinema simply exerts a different kind of tension. Van der Keuken himself also realized that.

The end of Herman Slobbe [1966], his second film about blind children, expresses this quite well. When Van der Keuken leaves the boy Slobbe, the voice-over states: “Everything in the film is a form. Herman is a form.

Goodbye, dear form.” The relationship between reality and form is inextricably linked to documentary cinema.

In certain fiction cinema that doesn’t play with that tension, the stakes appear really different to us.

The positioning of the boys appears very measured, for example when they have a job interview exercise in the classroom, which is even more emphasized by the succession of shot and reverse shots.

Olivia Rochette

We knew this exercise would be part of their lessons. A job interview is a game between two people anyhow, interacting from opposite perspectives. We had decided in advance to include a second camera, which was handled by Ruben Desiere. It’s the only scene in the film that was shot with two cameras. We organized the mise-en-scène in a certain way, but that’s an arrangement you choose. Within this framework the classroom still moves freely. You are not in charge of everything.

In what way did you intervene in the conversations?

Olivia Rochette

Our interventions were minor. We never gave the boys a scripted dialogue, for example, but we did ask them to redo a particular conversation, in order to film it from a different angle. The observation gets framed, forced into a

certain form or look. We didn’t ask them to turn off their mobile phones during the shoot, for example. If a character received a phone call when we were filming and a beautiful conversation ensued, we continued filming.

We set up a framework and gave the boys some directives they could use in the shot: a certain action, a topic of conversation or a particular gesture.

Gerard-Jan Claes

We didn’t place them in a predetermined idea or script. Whatever they said belonged to them entirely. It’s their text, their stories and their anecdotes.

This approach created a sort of concentration that gave an edge to everyday reality. Similar to what an amplifier does. Small cracks appeared in the reality the documentary created, which made the whole thing shift.

There was always a balance between mise-en-scène and observation. We created a framework in which playing around was allowed. In this game, reality always took over. Them being teenagers broke through. A bond grew between us and the boys, in the way they performed certain things. That was really wonderful.

Olivia Rochette

As a viewer you’re invited to listen to a conversation about football or love, and you see how the boys relate to the world around them. It was truly remarkable how, after a while, they seemed capable of balancing a natural and a structured mode of talking when they had to repeat parts of a previous conversation.

They really went along with the idea that film is a game.

They soon realized that they could play with the spaces, their gestures, and the topics of conversation.

Like Because We Are Visual, Grands travaux focuses on the world of young people.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Looking at the three films we made up until now, it always seems that a certain youthfulness lies at their core. Because We Are Visual immerses you in a world mainly populated by young people. Rain focused, amongst other things, on the youngest dancer of the company [Léonore Baulac]. And now we’ve made a film in a school. I think this fascination has something to do with what appealed to us in the work of Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz. He wrote a lot about youth and its relation to form. (...) his ‘infatuation’ with Youth (Immaturity in the sense of the unformed, which still includes all possibilities) and his resistance to Form as rigidity.

Youth craves the form, that grip, which gives an imago. They, who know how to handle that form, i.e.: those who possess the power to impose form on others, are doomed to die because of their ‘maturity’. (...)

[Gombrowicz imagines] variants of the ugliness that soaks and spoils situations and relationships once they ‘ripen’, succumbed to forms, schedules, categories. To give form is also to corrupt.

No matter how you look at it, like Gombrowicz has phrased it so eloquently: everything is in need of arrangement. Yet with youngsters, the form they assume is not yet fixed: it’s rather shaky, and still balances between a ‘mature’ and an ‘immature’ form. That’s important for us as filmmakers too: we try to see how forms don’t fossilize, but remain agile instead. That’s also part of the reason why we are so attracted to Brussels, since the city itself has a formless quality to it, and is continuingly searching for its own form.

In Because We Are Visual, you built a world out of YouTube images, in Grands travaux the boys’ interactions form the building blocks. Neither film, however, has been scripted in advance.

Gerard-Jan Claes

We’re very reluctant to cement anything beforehand. I always feel that we sketch out some guidelines with which we play. Just look at Out 1 [1971] by Jacques Rivette, in which he uses a improvisational strategy with some predefined elements that are thrown out before a group of actors. A certain form of fiction is created with those elements, but where this fiction finally ends up doesn’t really matter to Out 1 since, to a certain extent, the film is about the game itself.

For Grands travaux, we wanted to work with a few topics of conversation. We played with elements such as football or finding a job, for example during phone calls, but where those conversations were headed to was still unclear at the time of us filming them. This resulted in an improvisation that was rooted in a specific situation in that particular place. We had no fixed script, that’s true, but we did collect photos, music, personal reflections, quotes and more contemplative texts that were relevant to the film. Together they formed the framework within which we worked. A bit like what Nicolas Philibert calls “programmer le hasard” [programming chance].

With Because We Are Visual, we didn’t set out on a clear path either. We started from one image – a girl with pink panties who shows her body through a webcam – and from there on the film grew whilst editing.

The difference is that Because We Are Visual and Rain ended up having a more fragmentary character than Grands travaux.

Grands travaux, on the other hand, has scenes of up to ten minutes that really respect a certain spatial and chronological logic.

Olivia Rochette

For our two previous films, we gathered material but only looked for tone, structure and rhythm when we started editing. Our approach wasn’t completely different now, but we did chose a certain form of editing, a découpage, while we were filming. The main difference was that we already worked on well-defined scenes during the shoot, and as a result the material had a logic to it that dictated a specific style of editing. This was new to us, and therefore also very exciting. It wasn’t possible to ‘save’ the film in the editing, so to speak, or to still drastically change course at that point.

The editing is less ostensibly present in Grands travaux, but it actually proved to be our hardest edit so far.

It required more thought. We were repeatedly confronted with the choices we had made while filming, there was no way around them. Much of the editing work dealt with the internal dynamics of the different scenes, how a gaze takes you from one scene to the next, and how the scenes interrelate. The length of the scenes always dictated a certain structure.

Gerard-Jan Claes

The scenes we shot had something monolithic about them. In a text by Eric de Kuyper about Chantal Akerman, published on the website of Sabzian, De Kuyper says that Akerman’s long shots also resulted from a distrust of editing. After our two previous films, we wanted to distance ourselves a bit from the fragmentation of those earlier works. We noticed that we were looking for more directness. Moreover, this is the first time we worked with an editor from the very start. We were very fortunate to be able to work with Dieter Diependaele.

Editing can be looked at in different ways. Some editors have a very vertical approach, the ‘hard cut’ so to speak, while others, such as Dieter, go about their work more horizontally. When people mention a striking edit, they often refer to abrupt interventions in an eyecatching, vertical mode. That verticality may have its place in an edit, but even then it needs to be perceived as a rhythm, and with regard to its horizontality. We prefer working horizontally, paying meticulous attention to the rhythm of the film. The edit then functions as a movement through time that infuses the material with a certain spirit.

All of this closely relates to ​​Johan van der Keuken’s idea that editing should put everything in its place in accordance with its value. And Dieter has an incredibly sensitive way of working that really fits with how we had already interacted with the characters and the material. Such a process takes time, because you can’t blindly chop through your material. It requires you to cautiously delve into the material and carefully try to knead it into a certain form. Dieter is an editor who diligently watches over this, and continues to sculpt the scenes until they find their value in the whole.

We have thought hard about how we could incorporate Brussels’ exteriors and the movements of the boys through the city. In the end, we decided to set the film almost entirely within the walls of the school, and Brussels enters in less direct ways. Compared to Rain, Grands travaux indeed has a different approach to the characters and the space.

In Rain, viewers are kept more at a distance, and mostly remain in the role of observer. Even though there

are a number of elements structuring the material, such as the young ballet dancer Léonore Baulac, the rehearsals or the opera house, the observation is clearer in Grands travaux.

Gerard-Jan Claes

With Rain, we really struggled with the rehearsals. We had to use all kinds of tricks to capture them, for which we filmed hands and the backsides of heads... This strategy is not better or worse than any other, but I did wonder why we had so much difficulties to uninhibitedly film certain things. With Grands travaux, we wanted whatever happened in front of the camera to be conveyed more directly. This more direct form is still contrived, but I do think that some scenes achieve a more straight-forward setup. This approach has also found its way into the sound design, which is less directive and less exuberantly present than in our previous films.

Olivia Rochette

The sound design is still important, but just like with the editing, certain things had simply become impossible for us to do. This time around, the images couldn’t bear asynchronous sound, with sounds running from one scene to the next. Grands travaux is much more about spaces. In close collaboration with sound mixer Thomas Gauder and sound editors Ingrid Simon and Sabrina Calmels, we have tried to use the sound to define the spaces in a precise and direct way. That’s how we have tried to film too: how do you define and construct those spaces, what’s your approach to the découpage?

Gerard-Jan Claes

I think it’s powerful when directness and clarity attain a philosophical significance, like they do in the films of Nicolas Philibert or Abbas Kiarostami. Their work is truly incredible. Kiarostami continually operates within a classic fiction strategy, but his works are always

about the deduplication of fiction and documentary.

In Where Is My Friend’s House? [Khane-ye Doust kodjast?, 1987], Kiarostami tells the story of a boy who gets lost on his way to his friend’s house. That’s such a simple setup, but because of the clarity with which the film is made, and Kiarostami’s attention to form, the film also seems to be about much more, about cinema itself for example, and about how we look at, or have come to see, reality.

Your work continuously deals with the way cinema and reality relate to each other. That has also been a recurring theme among the publications of the cinephile website Sabzian, which you have co-founded.

Gerard-Jan Claes

The founding of Sabzian is linked to a quest for a cinematic theoretical framework that we only started exploring after our graduation from KASK – School of Arts. I have the impression that we look at film differently (not necessarily in a better or worse way) than when we made Because We Are Visual. We also discovered the work of Johan van der Keuken, Pedro Costa and Wang Bing... They not only create incredibly beautiful films in which the relationship between cinema and the world plays a crucial role, they are also capable of discussing their work clearly and with a great deal of philosophical insight. But some of the voices we encountered on this quest, like Pedro Costa, can have a quite paralyzing effect on you at times. What do you do as a young filmmaker when, for example, at a Q&A during the Courtisane festival in Ghent, Costa says that it’s no longer possible to film tables or kitchens? Or that you can’t make a film about the sea anymore because it has been exhausted artistically? If this point of view weighs you down, it’s hard to still film uninhibitedly...

It’s important to reflect about film, but it can also serve as an obstruction to filmmakers and their films.

Theory is very important, if only to understand and expose clichéd forms, and acquire a better understanding of your own pitfalls. Sabzian was founded just because of that. The founders are all filmmakers who somehow have an appetite for theory, or feel the need to put certain forms into words. I’ve noted that Sabzian, the film programs by Zéro de conduite and our films all have a didactic aspect to them. For ourselves as well as for viewers and readers. They all start from a desire to reflect about what cinema can be, and express that cinema is a necessity in our relationship with the world and how we see reality.

Being didactic isn’t exactly fashionable these days.

Gerard-Jan Claes

All those things are didactic in the sense that we try to offer people a different way of seeing reality.

We believe cinema can help shape that gaze.

Olivia Rochette

Despite this theoretical framework and our didactic intentions, a certain naivety still remains intact, especially when we’re filming. Many things sound very theoretical, but aren’t translated directly into the film.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Cinema is the art of the concrete. Perhaps, this also explains why it has become so difficult to come up with images: our culture is in a chronic crisis of the concrete. Nowadays, the ‘concrete’ is already so abstracted that it’s impossible to perform the essentially cinematographic act, namely ‘to concretize’. As filmmakers, we are really engaged with this, also within Sabzian. We want to make films that don’t require a manual, that speak for themselves and don’t make you think as such, but that simply are [form a presence]. This must always come first.

You have attempted to address this ‘chronic crisis of the concrete’ by expressing your interest in the boys themselves, in their actions and their words. Any symbolic reading is of secondary importance.

Olivia Rochette

This may be the very heart of our film: we look, with a great deal of concentration, at how people move and talk. In the boys’ daily conversations, we found the directness we wanted. Many films consider these types of conversations between young people as a brief illustration of how ‘people like them’ talk, or how we as filmmakers and viewers expect them to talk. We, on the other hand, let those conversations run their course.

Our concentration, but also theirs, ensures that we can really see their actions and hear their words.

Gerard-Jan Claes

As filmmakers, we have the ambition to look with proper patience at specific, small acts. We don’t want to squeeze our characters’ gestures into a universal symbolism. We do set out to create an image in which we, with the tools available to us as filmmakers, show how these boys carry themselves in this world and how they relate to it.

THE EXPECTED FILM

(...) what might a contemporary film about the Paris suburbs look like, who would play the lead role? With what would we feed its dialogue? I would love to see that film and I wish people would consider it almost their most essential work to make it. That said, it can’t be taken for granted because there is a gloomy outlook that blocks fiction. (...)

We must make it, because we haven’t seen it yet.

Grands travaux pays close attention to the boys’ day-today worries. Their future is taking shape before the viewer’s eyes. At the same time, many so-called opinion makers and internet trolls look down on these boys, and the place they grow up in, with set beliefs.

Anneessens-Funck has a tough reputation.

Because of the social stigma that has become attached to the school, these boys run the risk of being seen solely ‘as a problem’. After the attacks in Paris and Brussels, we noticed how people harbored certain expectations about a film shot at Anneessens-Funck.

When talking about Grands travaux, we often hear that it’s interesting to make a film about youngsters like them, certainly in these times. Sometimes, it seems as if they belong to a different world, where we as filmmakers have only resided for a short while.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Young people in Brussels are regularly featured in news coverage and documentaries, often in a negative way. The danger is that they are only called upon to illustrate themes such as violence, educational deprivation, unemployment, poverty, and so on. Brussels obviously has grave issues, but only showcasing its youngsters as an exemplification of those issues is very stigmatizing. It reduces them to a well-known representation, a template almost, that is reproduced over and over again. The media are often only interested in these young people because of a sense of urgency, or sensationalism. All of this is also reflected in certain expectations about our film. Conversations with teachers, social workers and other people have shown us that there was already an expected film out there, as if this subject or this space automatically generates its corresponding form.

Documentary cinema often also fosters the cliché of the counter-image, in which films are caught up in a self-imposed obligation to ‘correct’ mainstream representations, while actually not presenting a fundamentally different image themselves.

Gerard-Jan Claes

Indeed, counter-images are often equally problematic. Every image needs its opposite in order to be maintained. Succumbing to the dynamics of alternative representation in appearances only actually contributes to a representational standstill. We want to avoid linking a

particular aesthetic to a particular subject matter. If a subject forces you to adopt a certain form, you’re essentially working along the lines of the expected film, aren’t you?

Nevertheless, these expectations somehow weigh on Grands travaux, partly because Bilal Hadfi, one of the perpetrators of the attacks in Paris on November 13 2015, went to school at Anneessens-Funck.

Gerard-Jan Claes

After the attacks in Paris and Brussels, people started to show more interest in our film. Television networks asked us to contribute to their current affairs programs. But we often thought: if it’s interesting today, it was already interesting the day before. For us, the problems in Brussels have to do with a sore that has been festering for years.

Our film does not provide answers to whatever expectations current affairs programs might have.

We don’t claim to have analyzed the entire situation.

The fact that Anneessens-Funck was dragged into the media storm surrounding the Paris attacks hardly changed anything actually. Neither to the film, nor to the boys we filmed, other than what was projected on the boys from the outside. Nevertheless, it’s still part of the space of Grands travaux, and the often grim perspectives that lie ahead of the boys.

Olivia Rochette

After the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, certain ideas started to impose themselves on the film, but we had never intended to tackle those issues. We don’t collect evidence for a pre-established thesis. Documentary cinema is about confronting reality. This means that the expectations filmmakers inevitably have too, collide with the concrete world you work with. The point is not to deny those expectations, but to allow yourself to contextualize or reject them through your film.

It’s remarkable how documentary cinema so often clings onto the idea of the ‘expected film’.

When you make a film about a school like AnneessensFunck, you seem to be forced to address certain issues.

Can’t you just make a documentary about a school and...

Olivia Rochette

…just film its tiles…

Gerard-Jan Claes

That too can result in a very beautiful film.

But documentaries always seem to create the expectation that you have to tackle a particular issue. With Rain, for example, we already felt in advance that we had to address, and even unhinge, the hierarchical system of the Opéra national. Other people wanted to see a classic behind-the-scenes documentary. And in some respects, Rain, by its very structure, also refers to that expected film. At a lecture he once gave in Tokyo, Pedro Costa talked about those expectations and he expressed very nicely what filmmaking is actually all about. According to him, making a film is first and foremost about the pleasure of working on a film.

The pleasure of making a film is in making a film, it’s not in showing a problem. The first reason to make a film is for the pleasure of making it, the pleasure of the work. If there’s no pleasure in the work, there’s nothing.

So, what would be the most important characteristic of a documentary? It’s seeing that the person who made it did a good job, that’s the first thing, that he went up to something and worked on it. A film is always a documentary of its own filming, of its own making. Here, I’ll say that every film by Ozu and Mizoguchi is a film above all concerning artisans, concerning the pleasure of working, the work, that work is a good thing, and work well done is beautiful, it says everything, and that’s good enough for a film. The

work that we see well done – that’s more important than the theme. For example, in the pleasure and work that I shared with others in making Ossos [Pedro Costa, 1997], my task was, first, to create an interesting and well-made film; and, second, to make it with people who didn’t know anything about cinema. This desire made a film that is, I hope, morally and cinematically interesting. This is not because it speaks of misery or suffering, but because it is constructed in a manner I believe to be very fair, correct.

You can also get caught up in a dynamic that makes you think you need to persecute someone, whether it’s those boys, the teachers or the educational system in general. But we definitely didn’t want to do that. I really detest ‘topical films’, films that illustrate Big Ideas. For me, a film should always start from materiality. And that was perhaps the most difficult question with regard to Grands travaux: what is the material of our film?

Olivia Rochette

We started from these particular boys – Barry, Mamadou, Abdi and Achmed – and what structures their daily lives: soccer, girls, school, looking for a job, and trying to find a place to live on their own... That was what we liked about them, and that was what we wanted to work with. Grands travaux deals with all these little things we think are very important.

It’s also striking that you don’t take the bird’seye view you’ve mentioned earlier, or include the perspective of various educational or social experts. You shoot from within the intimacy of these boys’ lives.

We wanted to find an intimacy with the boys.

We could only attain it through the way we shot our film,

but also because after a while they allowed us into their daily lives.

Olivia Rochette

The form of the film is partly guided by the youngsters themselves too. Grands travaux focuses on everyday actions of individual boys. Moments like these are usually omitted from films because of the need to zero in on conflict and the development of a storyline. This reminds me once more of Johan van der Keuken, for whom a film consists of images shot when you come into contact with reality, and not as an illustration of what you already knew in advance.

There is another point: conventional narration presumes that you already knew the reality you describe, and that you also knew the characters you show in your film in advance. For me, and for some others, it’s precisely the opposite: I start from the feeling that I’m ignorant and that the images you make are ultimately the only knowable reality you’re left with. They are moments of contact, and of knowledge, the only residue from the world you have encountered. Generally, my films don’t consist of images that are part of an already existing entity, but they are moments the viewer can use to put together an image for himself. That image is formed in two stages: the filming/editing and the viewer’s observation of the film. It’s an exchange, two-way traffic. For me it’s important to note that the film’s information is also the only thing you know. That’s the idea of ​​the tip of the iceberg, provided that only the portion above the water exists (in the film), because you know nothing of what’s under water and therefore it’s impossible for you to describe the entire iceberg. For example, in The New Ice Age [De nieuwe ijstijd, Johan van der Keuken, 1974] the characters are not described ‘in their entirety’. What is shown is only what we’ve encountered when we were filming. It’s always a limited, fragmentary knowledge of everything that exists, and that’s how it’s shown.

HERE AND NOW

When I’m making a film I’m always in reality. I’m among the trees and among the people like yourself. There’s no symbolic or conventional filter between me and reality, as there is in literature. The cinema is an explosion of my love for reality.

The three films you made so far are all set in spaces you are very familiar with. Because We Are Visual focused on virtual reality, which also plays a role in Grands travaux.

Rain is partly about how the world of classical ballet relates to the world of contemporary dance, which you know well from your work for Rosas. And with Grands travaux, you turn your attention to Brussels.

Gerard-Jan Claes

I always assumed that exoticism was a bad starting point for a film, but I’m beginning to think that exoticism is part of a tension inherently related to film.

you can’t definitively solve. We will always remain outsiders at Anneessens-Funck, but that only becomes a ‘problem’ if it’s rendered as a problem in your film.

Part of the tension that makes cinema so interesting precisely comes from the privilege of being an outsider.

The first film program we organized with Zéro de conduite was called ‘To the Distant Observer’, named after the eponymous book Noël Burch wrote on Japanese cinema. That title points to what’s at stake in cinema.

As a filmmaker you should try to find the right distance and adopt it in your work.

We want to make films here. Seeking out remote places is not a necessity per se. During the recent CINEMATEK program about Portuguese cinema, I read a lovely quote by Manoel de Oliveira about his relation to the city of Porto: “Porto is my territory, elsewhere I would be a spectator.”

In the early nineties, French critic Serge Daney described the connection between cinema and the world nearby with the metaphor of a thread running from his apartment in Paris to the film theatres he frequented.

He regretted that the youth living in the Paris’ suburbs at that time had to miss that thread because there was a lack of imagination, which had brought about that their world had not ended up on film screens. In the mean time, many of the Parisian cinemas had already disappeared too. For Daney the Cinephile, a thread runs from one world to the other, or from the world to the world-in-the-world.

The recent editions of Daney’s texts have also contributed to our theoretical exploration. With him, we indeed find the emphasis on a cinema that tries to depict a contemporary reality. It’s important to find forms to reflect upon this world. That’s also your direct responsibility as a filmmaker. But this world is extremely

boarded up. It’s hard to really look at this world and its objects, and to take your time doing that. We are constantly being overwhelmed by other images. In an interview, Anne Teresa [De Keersmaeker] talked about a related idea: “The only thing a contemporary artwork can do, is to formulate a desire for a different state of affairs in the world.” Maybe that’s also what cinema, to me, has to do from a philosophical standpoint: to make the current state of affairs less evident.

That’s also what French philosopher Jacques Rancière stresses in his book The Emancipated Spectator, in which he writes about how images can help to create a new landscape of the possible: “The images of art do not supply weapons for battles. They help sketch newconfigurations of what can be seen, what can be said and what can be thought and, consequently, a new landscape of the possible.”

Grands travaux might be considered a tentative cartography of the vocational school AnneessensFunck. We mapped the various spaces of a place where the fragments of a disintegrated city converge. Just like with Because We Are Visual and Rain, constructing Grands travaux was closely related to a tension between inside and outside, between private and public space, between darkness and light... Essentially, Grands travaux is about how we might create new spaces in film. It’s a flowing geography, a movement through the polymorphous spaces inhabited by the boys.

Daney also thought of film in terms of a landscape.

He linked his cinephilia to the postcards he sent on his travels all over the world. The images on these cards are by definition well-known, but Daney’s own experiences and his own point of view caused him to give them an entirely different interpretation. To a certain extent,

he wallowed in exoticism, but he always connected this to his home, i.e. cinema. Visual culture continuously has to relate itself to dominant, well-known images.

It’s important to continue looking at things around us we may not see any longer because we have looked at them too much. And because we are fed up with looking at them.

That’s why I’m so struck by the fact that Nicolas Philibert’s films are produced by a company called Les films d’ici [Films from here]. Even though you could say there’s a false romanticism in that too. It was important to us, at least for Grands travaux, to film here in Brussels, in a reality we know. Film is always an investment in reality, they never get separated.

You also add a piece of reality. The Dardenne brothers, for example, have made the region of Seraing into a cinematic space. They can really create spaces.

In their films, tables, chairs and kitchens do exist.

As a young filmmaker, you can’t resign to Costa’s statement that it’s no longer possible to film a kitchen.

Costa has also pointed out that working on a film is what matters most about making a film, and not so much filming a pressing current topic. It’s a real challenge to make a film in a place that doesn’t already have an issue attached to it. I would love to be able to make a film about someone who travels to work, without imposing a certain topicality on that person, but rather make him or her part of our documentary stance. I think that’s the hardest thing to do.

We also want to make contemporary films.

On the one hand, a lot of films that deal with our current world remain locked within themselves, as if they don’t relate back to reality. On the other hand, as a filmmaker you wonder if you’re condemned to work along the lines of Pedro Costa or Wang Bing, even if what they do is brilliant and virtuosic. I think that is something many filmmakers struggle with. To us, they may be the most important contemporary filmmakers, but I don’t know the world and the time of their films, nor do I belong to them. Of course, they film places that do exist in our times, but precisely the fact that they are in decay, gives them a materialistic quality that seems to be lacking over here. Filming a smooth surface requires a different approach than filming cracked walls.

Daney might have stressed that cinema is inherently contemporary, but in the years just before his death [in 1992] he also realized that an aura of nostalgic romance had become attached to his cinephilia. In his view, television had had a pernicious influence. Today, filmmakers must also take into account the Internet and a plethora of small screens.

That’s also why we’re so attracted to Spring Breakers [Harmony Korine, 2012]. This too is the world we live in today, and it matters too. I think the fascination for our current world and its forms was the starting point for Because We Are Visual. But even then, there’s always this aspect of an exploration: you want to get acquainted with something you’re not familiar with yet, and film seems an appropriate means to that end. Though it seems as if films about today’s youth always end up in a carnival-like orgy, like Spring Breakers or The Bling Ring [Sofia Coppola, 2013]. It simply seems impossible to create a cinematic space with

a middle-class girl who is a bit at odds with school and with her boyfriend.

Films that tackle our present age usually deliver a continuous barrage of moral lessons, something that is absent from Spring Breakers, intriguingly enough. It also fascinates me that some musicians, like Kanye West for example, cope with our times with such great ease.

They process it very directly. Yet their work only offers a little friction and hardly disrupts anything.

Spring Breakers has a totally different tone than the heavy-handedness we often see in cinematic reflections about ‘our time’.

Michael Haneke is a contemporary filmmaker who determinedly tries to root his work in this world.

But sometimes I’m not sure what to think of his films.

I really like Code Unknown [Code inconnu. Récit incomplet de divers voyages, 2000], even though its content, the message let’s say, weighs heavily on that film. Haneke always ties a moral lesson to his films. They deal with topics such as Urban Life, Voyeurism... It’s difficult anyway to tell simple stories set in this day and age while not ceding to the illustration of ideas. If you look at Amour [Michael Haneke, 2012], you realize that few films manage to tell an ordinary, sincere love story about elderly people without attaching some kind of message.

The Dardenne brothers also seem to be spurred on by ethical concerns. Even though their films have a great naivety too. Nevertheless, their films are always driven by a morality, with a kind of Catholic guilt at its core, which asks how we engage with the Other today.

This remark may be a bit exaggerated, but some of their films almost become biblical parables. There’s always a kind of quest.

Despite the attention critics and the audience usually have for the moral aspect of their narratives, form is also crucial to the Dardenne brothers.

If you look at their work, the colour of a wall for example really matters. That is of course important for every film, but there are so few films in which these concrete elements play an essential role. The way the Dardenne brothers arrange their films, gives viewers the feeling that the green walls in The Son [Le fils, 2002] really matter.

Or the red-brick façade in their Two Days, One Night [Deux jours, une nuit, 2014], in front of which the character of Marion Cotillard talks with a colleague [played by Christelle Cornil].

Yes, or the dark blue of the night shop in that film. To me, this has a lot to do with how you relate to reality, with what you consider important in that reality, and how it’s organized. At one point in Two Days, One Night, Marion Cotillard’s character enters a night shop which has a stack of blue crates in the back. When a colleague of hers who moonlights in this shop comes along with orange carrots and green foliage, those carrots lie there against the blue background like Manet’s Bunch of Asparagus [La botte d’asperges, 1880]. A certain presence shines through this form. It really exists on the screen, as Costa would say. And that’s very beautiful.

Beursschouwburg stimuleert artistieke of dramaturgische publicaties ter verdieping van zijn projecten. Deze uitgave begeleidt de vertoningen van de film Grands travaux van Olivia Rochette en Gerard-Jan Claes, een co-productie van Beursschouwburg.

De film ging in première op 24 mei 2016 tijdens het Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

Olivia Rochette en Gerard-Jan Claes zijn sinds 2013 geassocieerde artiesten van Beursschouwburg. In het kader van deze residentie bood Beursschouwburg hen vier jaar lang een uitvalsbasis en verwezenlijkten ze samen meerdere projecten, waaronder de lancering van de cinefiele website Sabzian.be en een reeks filmavonden, gecureerd door hun productiestructuur Zéro de conduite.

This publication accompanies the screenings of Gerard-Jan Claes and Olivia Rochette’s film Grands travaux, a coproduction by Beursschouwburg. The film premiered on May 24, 2016, at Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes have been associated artists at Beursschouwburg since 2013. Within their fouryear residency, Beursschouwburg has provided them with an operating base, and together they accomplished several projects, including the launch of the cinephile website Sabzian.be, and a series of film programs, curated by their production platform Zéro de conduite.
