This is a paper presented at "Women of the Mediterranean: Women and Resilience" Virtual Conference sponsored by The Sant’Anna Institute and College of the Holy Cross on June 12th - 13th, 2021. The subject of this research is the unique and innovative pedagogy of engagement and outreach employed by University of Washington (UW) Professor Emerita Astra Zarina. Professor Zarina received the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1979 where her teaching methods inspired a generation of students who have become influential leaders in the creation of the built environment. Her colleagues and students have cited her as one of the “primary influences on their professional practice and how they see and engage with the world.”
